[NPL] DNS Expert 1.3

For Immediate Release

DNS Expert 1.3 from Men & Mice Released:

Crucial DNS Security Analysis for ISPs and DNS Administrators: Tests for
DNS Spoofing and Mail Relay

Reykjavik, Iceland, December 8/– Men & Mice today released version 1.3 of
DNS Expert and DNS Expert Lite, providing security tests such as checking
name servers’ vulnerability to DNS spoofing attacks and whether mail
servers can be used to relay spam mail.

A new crucial security test checks whether name servers can be spoofed i.e.
whether it is possible to place forged data in the cache of the name
servers. DNS spoofing can cause serious security problems for companies
vulnerable to such attacks, for example causing users to be directed to
wrong Internet sites or e-mail going through non-authorized mail servers.
Says Cricket Liu, DNS consultant, and co-author of the books “DNS & BIND”
and “DNS on Windows NT”: “DNS spoofing is a very real threat to the
integrity of activity on the Internet, whether commercial or casual.
Susceptibility to DNS spoofing is pervasive– a majority of the Internet’s
name servers are vulnerable to such attacks. A successful spoofing attack
could cause significant damage to an organization’s reputation, to its
customers and correspondents. It’s almost a wonder that we haven’t seen
more such attacks on the network.”

Also added is a new mail relay test that checks whether mail servers can be
used to relay mail where neither the sender nor the recipient of the mail
message is a local user. This is the most common method used by spammers to
gain unauthorized access to mail servers.

DNS Expert already has the ability to provide complete analysis and
problem-solving for Internet and Intranet zones and analyse DNS records on
all server platforms. Other new tests, significant speed improvements, and
user interface enhancements have also been made to add further to the
quality of DNS Expert.

DNS Expert and DNS Expert Lite 1.3 are available from Men & Mice for $295
and $99, respectively and run on Windows 95/98/NT and Mac OS. The upgrade
is free for current users of DNS Expert and DNS Expert Lite. Demo versions
of DNS Expert and DNS Expert Lite 1.3 can be downloaded at:
