[NPL] Power On Acquires GoMac

For Immediate Release

GoMac Goes to Power On

Power On Raises the Bar for Task Management Utilities

Minneapolis — December 1, 1998 — Power On Software announced today that
it had acquired the acclaimed task bar utility “GoMac” from Proteron, LLC.
GoMac offers the ultimate in ease of use and aesthetic design for Macintosh
users who want instant access to all of their programs while maintaining
precious screen real estate. GoMac is the only utility on the market that
allows for a task bar to be anchored across the very bottom of the screen,
thereby making its presence transparent. Unlike other products that get in
the way of productivity, GoMac even provides an auto-hide feature that
allows the user to make sure the task bar is only visible when it is needed.

In acquiring GoMac, Power On has continued its ascent to the pinnacle of
Macintosh utility vendors. John Wallace, President of Power On explained,
“We felt that GoMac was a central focus of our strategy to provide
utilities that enhance the user experience at every level of the Macintosh
Operating System. We will be integrating functionality from our forthcoming
utilities such as ACTION Menus to provide a seamless, easy, and powerful
way to increase productivity.” In commenting on the popularity of GoMac,
Power On product manager Greg Dalen observed, “We have been extremely
impressed with the elegance of GoMac, and we were amazed by its phenomenal
acceptance by the Macintosh community. When we noticed that GoMac had
actually climbed to the number one position as most popular download,
beating such products as Netscape Communicator, we knew we had to have the
product in our line.”

GoMac implements a program bar and start menu on the Mac OS that provides a
complete launching and process management solution. Among its features,
GoMac offers:

* Instant access to common system settings, file search, memory use, and
recent items

* A Program Bar with one-click process switching and program minimization.
The Program Bar displays all open programs with their memory usage and
allows them to be closed and hidden while in the background.

* Convenient launch capability from a customizable Start Menu

* Full Drag and Drop support for both the Program Bar and Start Menu

* Mouseless task switching via an elegant Keyboard Switcher

* Ability to access application memory settings from the task bar
contextual menus, in keeping with OS 8.5’s enhanced get info feature.

* A tastefully customizable start button for those Mac users who want to
avoid any semblance of Wintel dcor

* Ability to “minimize” background applications to a small icon near the clock

* Option to turn off the Start menu and use only the task bar

* Office 98 integration. Users with Office 98 installed will see a
Microsoft Office 98 item in their Start Menu for easy access to Word,
PowerPoint and Excel.

* Support for Apple’s Control Strip technology

* Task bar with integrated clock and perpetual calendar for instantaneous
date reference

Among GoMac’s many fans is “Dr. Macintosh”, Bob Levitus, who raves “GoMac
is way cool. Whether you’re new to the Mac or a grizzled old veteran, it
makes your Mac better. Once you try it, you’ll definitely want to buy it.”
GoMac is a control panel which settles the score with Windows users. GoMac
makes the Macintosh way of doing things friendlier and more efficient. As
veteran Macintosh pundit Steven Bobker sees it, “I’d be literally lost
without GoMac. Windows has exactly one great feature: its Task Bar. GoMac
gives the Mac an even better Task Bar.” In awarding GoMac a perfect rating,
Tom Cheek of Tucows observed, “This program should be on every Mac user’s
machine.” The Mac Report agrees, stating that “The best thing to come out
of Windows is the Task Bar along the bottom of the screen. GoMac takes this
rare Microsoft innovation and fine-tunes it for the Macintosh
communityGoMac is far superior to the Finder and much easier on the
sanity.”

GoMac has found a place on the desktops of Macs in over 30 countries on
five continents. Localized versions are available in German, Italian, and
Japanese. GoMac has minimal system requirements and is compatible with
68030, 68040, and PowerPC processors running Mac System 7.6 or later. Power
On will ship GoMac version 1.6.1 during the first week of December. GoMac
version 1.6 and later are OS 8.5 compatible.

The product will be marketed as ACTION GoMac and will be available through
Macwarehouse, Multiple Zones International, and dealers and distributors
worldwide, or directly from Power On Software. In addition, electronic
distribution is available through BuyDirect.com. The suggested retail price
of ACTION GoMac is $49.95, and special pricing will be available to current
Power On customers or Now Utilities owners.

the development of such blockbuster products as Now Utilities and Speed
