[MD1] Rainbow Add USB Support to Sentinel Line

RAINBOW TECHNOLOGIES ADDS USB SUPPORT FOR
PC AND MACINTOSH SOFTWARE DEVELOPERS TO SENTINEL LINE

Las Vegas, NV, COMDEX (#S2666), November 17, 1998 – Rainbow Technologies,
Inc. (NASDAQ: RNBO), a leader in high performance security solutions, today
announced the availability of SentinelSuperPro-USB and SentinelEve3-USB
software protection keys for PC and Apple Macintosh software developers.
These hardware keys plug into the Universal Serial Bus (USB) port on PCs
and the new Apple iMac product line, providing developers with the highest
level of software protection.

“Software developers will enjoy the smaller size of the USB devices, and
the Plug and Play features,” says Norm Denton, senior vice president of
Rainbow’s Sentinel Business Unit. “The new USB keys offer developers the
same functionality they’ve relied upon in Rainbow’s parallel port and ADB
devices.” In addition to eliminating software piracy, Rainbow’s USB keys
can also be used as authentication or access control devices. A unique ID
number is assigned to each USB key, enabling the key to replace or
supplement personal passwords. As a theft deterrent device, the unique ID
of the USB key makes it an ideal laptop computer security device. Other
uses for the USB keys include: Web access control including account
management of extranets and intranets; client token for Virtual Private
Network (VPN) access; replacement for password generator tokens; and
storage of credentials, certificates and licenses.

With over 14 million Sentinel keys protecting software applications
worldwide, SentinelSuperPro-USB and SentinelEve3-USB enhance Rainbow’s
software protection products by combining sophisticated hardware and
software technology to prevent the illegal distribution and use of
software. When software protected by Sentinel is used, the program sends
queries to the key attached to the computer. The key immediately evaluates
each query and responds. The correct response ensures that standard
operation of the software will continue without interruption. If the key is
not present, the product will not operate. Once Sentinel software
protection is implemented using the SentinelWizard GUI, no coding is
required–developers need only include a Sentinel key with each software
package. Customers install the software as usual, and simply plug the
Sentinel key into the appropriate port on their computer.

Pricing and Availability

The SentinelSuperPro-USB and SentinelEve3-USB are available now. Pricing
starts at $19.95 for a developer’s evaluation kit.
