WebTen 2.1 – A New Standard for Macintosh Web Servers

Unparalleled Features and Performance Combined with Robustness and Scalability

Santa Barbara, CA, July 6, 1998. Tenon Intersystems today announced WebTen
2.1, an upgrade to its industrial-strength, high-performance Apache-based
Web server for Power Macs. WebTen 2.1 is able to sustain 1000 hits/second
and is 100% compatible with HTTP/1.1. It includes DNS, multihoming FTP (for
uploading web content on a virtual host-by-virtual host basis), NFS (for
offloading content), and SSL 3.0 (for supporting eCommerce with multiple
secure certificates on a single machine).

WebTen incorporates an augmented Apache web server software developed by
the Apache Group. Apache is well-known as stable, full-strength,
feature-rich web server software used on over one million machines
worldwide. WebTen’s domain name service (DNS) is the latest
state-of-the-art software from the Internet Software Consortium and
WebTen’s FTP service is based on the well-respected Washington University
implementation. Tenon has taken this mature, integrated, scalable software
and extended it with performance enhancements and Macintosh-specific
features to make WebTen’s Apache the fastest and easiest-to-use Apache in
the world.

WebTen 2.1 includes an updated suite of core internet software, as well as
expanded capabilities. The new package supports Apache 1.2.6, domain name
services based on the latest BIND 8.1.2, new internet caching software
based on Squid 1.1.20, the latest Perl 5.004_4, and enhanced documentation.
WebTen’s Administration Server has been extended to support more
configuration options; multihoming FTP as well as plug-in server responses
are both now configurable via this point & click interface. The release
includes improved support for W*API plug-ins, AppleScript CGIs (ACGIs) and
internet-standard CGIs. CGI debugging capabilities have been enhanced and a
suite of utilities commonly used in CGI scripts (ping, touch, rmdir, csh,
awk, sort, sh-query) has been added. The new release also includes many
additional enhancements and modifications for improved robustness and
ease-of-use.

“Our software has no built-in limits. WebTen can handle an unlimited number
of connections, virtual hosts, and users in a very robust way. Other
Macintosh offerings are an eclectic collection of plug-ins and
reimplementations of internet software. Because we rely on existing,
well-tested implementations of internet software, we can concentrate our
efforts on performance and Macintosh-specific enhancements. The result is
an integrated, scalable, easy-to-use package. With WebTen, we are on the
road to fulfilling our vision of world-class networking on a Macintosh,”
said Tenon’s President, Steve Holmgren.

WebTen provides the lowest cost per feature and the highest price
performance ratio of any commercial Macintosh Web server. The software is
available for US$495. For a limited time, owners of other commercial
Macintosh Web servers can purchase WebTen 2.1 for $350. Upgrades from 1.x
to 2.1 are $210. Upgrades for WebTen 2.0.x customers are free. The WebTen
2.1 CD includes Tenon’s recently announced Software Development Kit (SDK),
to allow Macintosh developers to build new Apache modules, as well as a
preview of a high-performance, industry-standard search engine, ht://Dig. A
downloadable demo is available at: http://www.tenon.com/products/webten.

1989, Tenon has developed a unique suite of products for Macintosh. Tenon
