[MD1] Paragon OAK CORBA Suite

PARAGON SOFTWARE ANNOUNCES RELEASE 5.0 OF THE OAK CORBA SUITE FOR
DEVELOPING DISTRIBUTED APPLICATIONS USING CORBA TECHNOLOGY

A proven CORBA 2.0 IIOP-compatible ORB especially suited to the NEXTSTEP
and OPENSTEP marketplace

VIENNA, VA — August 18, 1997– Paragon Software, Inc., a leading provider
of custom enterprise application solutions, announces Release 5.0 of its
OAK CORBA suite. OAK supports deployment of CORBA-based solutions on a wide
variety of UNIX and Windows platforms. The 5.0 release includes full IIOP
support and is 100% compatible with other CORBA 2.0 ORB products, including
Orbix and VisiBroker. Available platforms include HP-UX, Solaris, Linux,
Windows NT, Windows 95, any POSIX-compliant UNIX system, NEXTSTEP 3.X, and
OPENSTEP 4.X.

OAK 5.0 and the CORBA 2.0 Specification

OAK is Paragon Software’s implementation of the OMG CORBA 2.0 core
architecture, as defined in the CORBA 2.0 specification. Release 5.0
implements four main components of the CORBA specification: the Object
Request Broker, IIOP interoperability, name services, and OMG IDL language
mappings with C++ and Objective-C bindings. Additional components of the
CORBA specification are currently being developed, including an Interface
Repository and CosEvents.

Especially Suited to the NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP Marketplace

Developers using Apple’s advanced Objective-C development environment can
now take advantage of the latest CORBA distributed application technology
while developing their applications using familiar Apple tools. A proven
tool in its fifth release, the OAK CORBA suite is the only CORBA
implementation in the world to support Objective-C language bindings,
finally bringing the standards and advanced architecture of CORBA to the
OPENSTEP development environment. In addition, IIOP support allows new and
existing NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP applications to interoperate in an open,
standards-based distributed environment.

“The power and reach of CORBA continues to grow in the technology
marketplace, and it will be very important for Apple customers to be
positioned to take advantage of this,” said Jeff Marshall, President of
Paragon Software. “We are very excited to bring CORBA solutions to
customers developing OPENSTEP applications. With the combination of Apple
Enterprise development tools and the portability and standards support of
CORBA, customers can deploy applications using NEXTSTEP or OPENSTEP while
ensuring they will interoperate in the emerging distributed environment.”

Give New Life to Legacy NEXTSTEP Applications

With its Objective-C binding support, OAK is the best choice for
distributing new and legacy NEXTSTEP and OPENSTEP applications with CORBA.
OAK isideal for the conversion of existing NEXTSTEP applications using
low-risk strategies for interoperability. Developers working with OAK can
quickly create a NEXTSTEP CORBA implementation server using business logic
from a legacy “fat” client application. A new “thin” CORBA client may then
be written with OPENSTEP by leveraging the existing user interface,
rewritten in C++ in any of the supported environments, or constructed from
Java components for deployment in an IIOP-enabled web browser like Netscape
Communicator.

OAK allows developers to expand to new platforms, migrate selected
components to a more open environment, or leverage an investment in
NEXTSTEP technology by moving key processing components to other platforms.
New initiatives by Sun Microsystems, Netscape Communications, and other key
industry trendsetters ensure that a CORBA-enabled application will provide
unparalleled opportunities for integration and interoperability.
