Video showcases iOS app built with Xojo

Xojo Inc., the company formerly known as Real Software, has posted a video of an iOS app that was built with Xojo. Xojo is an object-oriented, cross-platform software development tool that enables developers to create software for OS X, Windows, Linux, the web and mobile.

The video showcases all the native controls and gives an overview of Xojo's support for building iOS apps. Building native iOS apps with Xojo is the same as building a web or desktop app as you do today. You can view the video at http://tinyurl.com/nvexpk7 .

A look at SkySafari for iOS, Mac OS X and 2012 DA14

This Friday, Feb. 15, a 180,000-ton asteroid with the thrilling name of "2012 DA14" will fly past the Earth. Don't worry, we're not talking a "Deep Impact" scenario. Which is good, right? And you can follow the asteroid using Apple devices.

The 50-meter space rock will come within 17,200 miles of earth -- that's closer than our orbiting geosynchronous communication satellites. Although we don't have to worry about a collision, the passage of 2012 DA14 is a record close approach to the Earth for an object of this size.

Southern Stars has released update to its SkySafari Plus and Pro apps for iOS, Mac OS X, and Android to let you track 2012 DA14. If you want to track the asteroid you'll want the updated apps. Why? Because the Earth's gravity affects the asteroid's orbit so severely, most desktop planetarium programs -- and all other mobile apps -- will completely fail to predict the asteroid's position correctly, says Southern Stars founder Tim DeBenedictis.

White paper looks at Mac adoption in the enterprise...

Mac adoption is rising, even in the enterprise, and IT departments and support staff can't afford to ignore the Mac any longer. Additional responses show management priorities and organizational approaches to managing Macs. The respondents cited user preference, increased productivity, and ease of technical support as leading reasons for choosing Macs.

Increased Mac usage can only mean increased Mac-related support issues. Unfortunately, most remote support products simply don’t support Macs at all, and many of...

White paper looks at using PCIe attached storage

The highest performance, expandable, directly attached storage can be achieved at low cost by moving the server or work station’s PCI bus “outside” and taking advantage of the benefits of the architecture when adding storage subsystems as needed, according to JRM (http://www.jmr.com/), which specializes in storage technology.

JRM -- which has written a white paper (attached) on the subject -- says that to make use of high performance, high capacity, low cost SAS3 and SATA disk drives for mass storage, a bridging interface is required from PCI Express (PCIe) to SAS.

PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is a serial connection that operates more like a network than a bus. Instead of one bus that handles data from multiple sources, PCIe has a switch that controls several point-to-point serial connections.

SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) is a computer bus that moves data to and from computer...

The Tolis Group says that no longer is tape a performance, usability, or cost gating factor. In fact, the white paper says that LTO-4 technology is actually faster than the filesystems that feed it, the reliability is excellent, and the life expectancy of written tapes is measured in decades. The same can be said for other fine tape formats, though throughput performance varies.

What's LTO? It stands for Linear Tape-Open, a magnetic tape data storage technology . IT developed jointly by IBM, HP and Seagate as an open alternative to the proprietary Digital Linear Tape (DLT). Developed jointly by IBM, HP, and Seagate.

Why REALbasic?

Why REALbasic?

What development enviroment should you use? Already you are faced with a plethora of choices: cross-platform or for Mac only? Standalone programs or ones that need a runtime? Just for fun or might it develop into something more serious?

My own requirements in a development tool were: easy to learn, good graphical user interface, cross-platform, and if possible, cheap, preferably free.

So, based upon my requirements, that excluded X-Code (though I still have it on my Mac), Tcl, Python, and a few others and left me seriously looking at REALbasic, Java, SuperCard and Revolution. I tried all of them for a few weeks and REALbasic came out on top by a mile. I had used the old HyperCard extensively and I found SuperCard and Revolution to be quite limited. I hadn’t previously appreciated the difference that a fully object-oriented language would make. Java is object-oriented and cross-platform, but it is intended mainly for...

Choosing a Development Environment

As a professional software developer for more than twenty years, I have chosen a lot of tools. Some say "practice makes perfect," so after a quarter century, I should be pretty good at it. I picked my first development tool in high school. I was using a TRS-80 calculator that came with BASIC, so that ended up becoming my first tool by default. That is the way many of us choose our first tool, simple convenience. I can't say this method hurt me too much, as I sold my first program as a sophomore and took my first development position while still in high school. Sometimes the only tool is the best tool because it is your only option. When this happens, you can be sure you made the right choice.

The Rapid Release Model for Software Development

The Rapid Release Model for Software Development

Summary

Moving software development schedules to a 90-day cycle offers substantial benefits for both software consumers and software developers. For software consumers, it means gaining faster access to new features and functionality and better software quality. For developers, it means reduced risk, improved project management and market agility.

Introduction

For the past 20 years, commercial software has been packaged and sold using the same sales model as other household products such as breakfast cereal and laundry detergent; in an attractive box on the shelf of a retail store. The software industry has grown up trying to fit within this well-established system of selling consumer products.

REALbasic XML Project Format

REALbasic can export and import REALbasic projects in XML format. XML is a structured, text-based data format that provides a standard framework for representing data.

For a brief orientation to XML documents in general, see What Do XML Documents Look Like?. The XML produced by REALbasic is well-formed, but it cannot be "validated" because it does not include a "document type declaration." Most of the content should be self-explanatory, with the aid of the reference below. Whitespace is significant only in the content area of the innermost tags; whitespace between one tag and another is not significant.
