Apple and (RED) celebrate a record year of giving

Since its creation in 2006, (RED) has worked to help the more than 37 million people living with HIV across the globe.

This World AIDS Day, Apple celebrates a record year of giving with over $30 million raised for the Global Fund, equating to 144 million days of ARV medication that prevents the transmission of HIV from mothers to their unborn babies. Over the past 11 years, Apple customers have helped provide an equivalent of 475 million days of lifesaving medication.

On World AIDS Day, App Store customers will see a Today tab takeover around the world.

“Connecting through our products and services helps make it easy for our customers to join us in the effort to create the first AIDS-free generation,” says Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, in a press release. “By working with (RED) to stop the transmission of HIV from moms to their unborn babies, we’re...

Apple reportedly developing in-house iPhone power...

Apple is apparently well underway in developing its own in-house power management chips for its iPhone models. Today, the integrated circuitry for power management is designed by Dialog, a UK company. Nikkei is reporting that Apple wants to use its own custom chips as soon as next year, meaning they could feature in some 2018 iPhones but the timeframe is not locked down.

Apple has systematically taken on more silicon design in the last few years, ranging from its own A-series CPUs and GPUs found in iPhones and iPads, Apple Watch system-in-a-package and more.

Thunderbolt 3 to Dual 4K DisplayPort Adapter lets...

IOGEAR’s $99.95 Thunderbolt 3 to Dual 4K DisplayPort Adapter lets you connect up to two DisplayPort monitors (one 5K or two 4K @ 60Hz) through a single Thunderbolt 3 port on your iMac or MacBook Pro.

Basically, the adapter transforms a Thunderbolt 3 port into two individual DisplayPort video outputs without the need to purchase a pricey graphical workstation. It’s compact, so it’s easy to stow and take on the road. And it’s bus-powered, so there’s no need for an external power supply.

The Thunderbolt 3 to Dual 4K DisplayPort Adapter is a solid solution for extending a MacBook Pro to maximize the display of graphic-intensive professional applications such as graphic design, video editing or presentations in small offices or while traveling. Plus, all consumers can connect their 4K or 5K displays to a laptop for gaming and content-streaming applications in their homes or dorm rooms.

How to reinvigorate a sluggish Magic Mouse 2

Is your Magic Mouse 2 acting sluggish and tracking slowly? If so, there are several steps you can take to get it back up to speed (literally).

The first, easiest, and most effective thing thing to do is simply wipe clean the glass on the bottom of the mouse that houses the laser. Heck, I pick my mouse up and simply blow any dust off the glass when it seems “tired.” That almost always does the trick. If that doesn’t work, try one of these steps:

Download and install the latest Magic Mouse firmware. You can find out how to do so by clicking here.

Reset the connection and re-pair the device. Go to the Bluetooth and Mouse system preferences and remove the mouse from your system. Turn the mouse off and back on so it goes into discovery mode and pair it back up with your Mac through the "Mouse" system preferences.

Reset the computer's PRAM by holding down the options-command-P-R keys at...

Notable apps and app updates for Nov. 30, 2017

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks.

iOS Apps/Updates

Wulum Creative Technology has introduced Saving Christmas - AR 1.0. In the free augmented reality app, you help Santa deliver Christmas presents. To do this, you have control over a drone that is in charge of dropping presents over houses marked with floating trees on their roof. Of course, there’s a catch; you have to deliver all presents before Christmas is over.

Sports section begins to surface in iOS 11.2, tvOS...

If you’re looking for additional sports goodness via your iOS device or Apple TV, Apple may have some good stuff coming your way.

Apple’s TV app has finally gained the live sports integration announced months ago. The dedicated sports section now appears to be live on the TV app on latest betas of iOS and tvOS.

The news follows a rumor released earlier this month via a verified source that stated that a Sports section would be released around December 4th. The new feature will bring live scores, game alerts, and the ability to watch multiple games simultaneously.

The Sports section also offers the ability to track favorite teams across MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, and more. In Apple’s September demo they showed off live news integration, but that doesn’t yet appear to be live within the TV app update.

If the new Sports section isn’t appearing, force quitting the TV app and relaunching it should cause it to appear.

The Sports tab is appearing for those...

Apple has released a fix for the now-infamous root bug in macOS High Sierra.

The company released its Apple Security Update 2017-001 update on Wednesday. The update, a 2.1 megabyte download, can be located and installed via the App Store app. Open this program, click on “Updates” and the patch will appear as a security update that can be installed without needing to restart your Mac.

Apple offered the following comment regarding the fix:

When our security engineers became aware of the issue Tuesday afternoon, we immediately began working on an update that closes the security hole. This morning, as of 8 a.m., the update is available for download, and starting later today it will be automatically installed on all systems running the latest version (10.13.1) of macOS High Sierra.

High Sierra Root Login Bug Was Mentioned on Apple’s...

It’s natural to speculate how a bug as egregious as the now-fixed High Sierra root login bug could escape notice for so long. It seems to have been there ever since High Sierra 10.3.0 shipped on September 25, and may have existed in the betas through the summer. One explanation is that logging in with the username “root” and a blank password is so bizarre that it’s the sort of thing no one would think to try. Like the classic “1-2-3-4-5” scene in Spaceballs, but with the ultimate weak password — none at all.

More insidious though, is the notion that it might not have escaped notice prior to its widespread publicization yesterday — but that the people who had heretofore discovered it kept it to themselves.

This exploit was in fact posted to Apple’s own support forums on...

Review: Martin Logan Forte Wireless Streaming...

In recent months, we've reviewed a number of smart home speakers focused on music streaming. Though it's great to have smart functionality in what would have otherwise been relatively mundane Bluetooth speakers, we were frustrated by what felt like arbitrary limitations on their functionality. Also, though services like Spotify and Tidal can stream high-quality music files, those speakers' sound quality was necessarily limited by their small form factor. That's why we were immediately excited when speaker veteran Martin Logan offered us a chance to review their Forte wireless streaming amplifier. Though speakers are not included, the Forte is free of those artificial limitations, and almost without compromises.{/exp:char_limit}

AWT TV Episode 29: November 28, 2017

Welcome to AWT TV, a weekly show featuring Steve Sande, Dennis Sellers and Marty Edwards of Apple World Today. Each week we'll discuss what's happened in the world of Apple, talk about new apps and accessories, maybe even have a demonstration or two of the latest software.

On last night's episode of AWT TV, we spent most of the night in a discussion about Apple's quality control -- or lack of it -- with software. This is particularly important in light of several recent annoying bugs with iOS 11, but critical when we look at the macOS High Sierra root user bug -- as Steve mentioned, it's akin to leaving a key in a door in a crime-ridden neighborhood!

Marty had several bugs to demonstrate for us; some are just plain sloppy! For example, he noted that if you change the font size on the iOS compass app found on iPhones, the text showing the elevation  actually "rolls" to the top of the screen. Text is no longer centered properly in the app, and it's just like Apple isn...

Apple has announced its annual iTunes Connect hiatus, informing developers they won’t be able to submit new apps or updates to existing apps from December 23 – 27. Other iTunes Connect functions will still be available during that period, so developers can “let customers know about promotions, upcoming features, and events within your app at any time using the promotional text field.”...

Games with the Philippine president killing...

Video games that put the player in the shoes of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte as he kills criminals have been removed from the Apple App Store, reports the BBC. Thousands of people have been killed by police during the president's crackdown on drug-related crime, the article adds.

The Asian Network of People Who Use Drugs (Anpud) had previously written an open letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook to remove the games, which it said were "promoting murder, extrajudicial killings, violence, and the war on drugs in the Philippines.”

The games that have now apparently been removed include: Duterte knows Kung Fu: Pinoy Crime Fighter, Duterte Running Man Challenge Game, Fighting Crime 2, and Tsip Bato: Ang Bumangga Giba. All those games featured either Duterte, or Philippines police chief Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa shooting down criminals.

From Android to iOS - Bluetooth Nightmare?

On day two of my iPhone X ownership, I hopped on my Harley and headed out to run some errands. I paired my iPhone X up with the Boom Audio Bluetooth speakers on my Heritage and loaded up an Amazon Music playlist. Everything appeared to be working great. When I was leaving my 1st stop, I started the music again, but instead of coming out of my Bluetooth speakers, the music was playing from the phone. I forgot the speakers in settings and re-paired. All was well again. Next stop, same thing. I decided to revisit this issue later. I didn't think I had bigger issues.

Monday, I paired up my SOL Republic Shadow Bluetooth headset and headed out for a walk during lunch. The sound was great, everything was fine. The only issue I had was a notification sound after every song. I'm not sure if this is normal, but it didn't happen with my Pixel XL. When I went to use them...

Apple Accuses Qualcomm of Patent Infringement in...

From a report: Apple on Wednesday filed a countersuit against Qualcomm, alleging that Qualcomm's Snapdragon mobile phone chips that power a wide variety of Android-based devices infringe on Apple's patents, the latest development in a long-running dispute. Qualcomm in July accused Apple of infringing several patents related to helping mobile phones get better battery life. Apple has denied the claims that it violated Qualcomm's battery life patents and alleged that Qualcomm's patents were invalid, a common move in such cases. But on Wednesday, in a filing in U.S. District Court in San Diego, Apple revised its answer to Qualcomm's complaint with accusations of its own. Apple alleges it owns at least eight battery life patents that Qualcomm has violated.

Hacking the AirPods case to add wireless charging

This is an ugly hack, not something I would ever do to what I consider a beautifully designed case. Especially considering that Apple is said to be shipping their own inductive AirPods case in the near future.

Facebook’s new CAPTCHA: “Please upload a photo of...

Nitasha Tiku, Wired:

Facebook may soon ask you to “upload a photo of yourself that clearly shows your face,” to prove you’re not a bot.

The company is using a new kind of captcha to verify whether a user is a real person. According to a screenshot of the identity test shared on Twitter on Tuesday and verified by Facebook, the prompt says: “Please upload a photo of yourself that clearly shows your face. We’ll check it and then permanently delete it from our servers.”

And:

In a statement to WIRED, a Facebook spokesperson said the photo test is intended to “help us catch suspicious activity at various points of interaction on the site, including creating an account, sending Friend requests, setting up ads payments, and creating or editing ads.”

This is somewhat reminiscent of Face ID, though presumably without the machine learning aspect, with zero 3D information (it’s a picture, after all) and, also presumably, with a much slower reaction time....

IDC: Apple’s iPhone market to grow 4.7% in 2017, 8.1...

According to a new forecast from IDC overall smartphone shipments will steadily grow from 1.5 billion units in 2017 to 1.7 billion units in 2021. Apple's launch of the iPhone 8/8+ and X in late 2017 set the company up to return to iPhone volume growth in 2017, adds the research group.

IDC expects an even bigger rebound in 2018 as channels fill up with inventory of the new models and as price cuts around earlier models enable it to hit lower price points. Coming off the 7% decline in iPhone shipments in 2016, IDC is forecasting growth of 2.4% in 2017 and 8.1% in 2018. IDC also projects sustained growth for Apple through the later years of the forecast with volumes growing at a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.1%.

“Phablets” (smartphones with a screen size of 5.5 inches to under-7 inches) will far outpace total market growth by climbing from 611 million units in 2017 to one billion units in 2021,...

Apple countersues Qualcomm for patent infringement

Here we go again. Apple has filed a countersuit against Qualcomm, the world’s dominant supplier of baseband processors, alleging patent infringement and seeks unspecified damages. The tech giant says Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 and 820 processors, found in Android phones from Samsung and Alphabet, infringe on battery life patents owned by Apple.

The infringement claims appear in Apple’s revised response to Qualcomm’s suit accusing Apple of infringement. In January, Apple filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm, alleging the chip supplier demanded unfair terms for...
