Apple’s Lisa Jackson on the company’s green...

For almost two years, Apple Inc. ’s efforts to go green have been the responsibility of Lisa Jackson, who was hired to oversee the company’s sustainability initiatives after she stepped down as head of the Environmental Protection Agency.

She sat down with Jeffrey Ball, contributing editor at The Wall Street Journal and scholar-in-residence at Stanford University’s Steyer-Taylor Center for Energy Policy and Finance, to discuss Apple’s commitment to renewable energy and why a recently announced solar deal is a good one for shareholders.

Apple is one of the few companies that is transparent about its environmental commitment. Sadly, this is the reason that the press goes after Apple more than other companies—Apple makes all the information available, while the others hide it.

WSJ likes Samsung Galaxy 6 more than iPhone 6

Joanna Stern:

A better camera, sharper display and faster charging put Samsung’s new flagship phones ahead in the smartphone race.

Since the dawn of the smartphone wars, there have been basic truths about Samsungs: They’re made of flimsy plastic, their cameras can’t keep up with the iPhone’s, and their modified Android software is ugly and intolerably cluttered.

With the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, which arrive at U.S. carriers on April 10, none of that is true anymore. I am not afraid to say it: I love Samsung’s new phones, maybe even more than my own iPhone 6. Like a child who just found out that Santa isn’t real, I have spent the past week questioning everything I know.

I like Joanna and respect her opinion a lot. I still don’t like the way Samsung does business though.

Podcast: Join our 'Becoming Steve Jobs'...

The newest Steve Jobs biography wasn't authorized by Steve Jobs himself, but it does come with the blessing of many of Apple's top brass, and includes plenty of insights from its subject, as he had participated in interviews with coauthor Brent Schlender for years. Glenn and Susie, along with our special guests, Macworld's associate managing editor Leah Yamshon, and frequent contributor Jeff Carlson, discuss what this book taught them about working with Steve, and how he applied the lessons learned from his early failures to his later projects. If Walter Isaacson's official authorized Steve Jobs biography left you cold, Becoming Steve Jobs may be just what you're looking for.

Pandora CFO confirms Apple Watch integration, says...

With more than 81 million active users, Pandora is a heavyweight in the music streaming industry. It is bigger than Spotify, which has 60 million active users, and iTunes Radio, a less popular streaming service that Apple introduced alongside iOS 6. With Apple now owning Beats Music and reportedly working to revamp the service, the competition in the streaming music business is now more intense than it has ever been.

Speaking to Fox Business, Pandora CFO Mike Herring said that, despite their rival relationship, the company still is a close partner with Apple.

Pandora, which owes part of its success to the popularity of its iPhone app, has a “frenemy kind of relationship going on” with...

The Beast of Turin awakens and it’s very, very angry

Autoweek:

This unbelievable Fiat S76, the so-called Beast of Turin, is the one surviving example of a pair of speed-record contenders the Italian automaker built before WWI. Its gargantuan 28.5-liter inline-four was capable of providing an impressive 300 hp — enough to propel the car to 116 mph, and a one-mile land speed record, in 1911.

Plus, it spits hellfire and sounds meaner than anything an army of 10,000 Carlo Abarths could have ever dreamed up.

Watch the video above if you don’t believe us.

First of all, turn your volume down.

I posted about this back in December when they had first restored this fire breathing monster. Now they’ve actually got it out on public roads, scaring humans and livestock alike. Thanks again to...

Pandora CFO points towards upcoming CarPlay...

Apple and Pandora could be teaming up where CarPlay is concerned.

As part of a wide ranging interview with FOX Business Network on Tuesday, Pandora’s chief financial officer Mike Herring broke the silence on upcoming compatibility with Apple’s in-car infotainment solution, saying the streaming service will “definitely be in CarPlay.”

While Herring failed to produce a timeline of availability, he is the first company official to comment on Pandora’s CarPlay plans. Pandora was a glaring omission when Apple announced CarPlay one year ago, and the streaming Internet music giant has yet to make its way onto Apple’s in-dash system.

With CarPlay to be featured in 40 new...

Incorrect search policy

Forums: Troubleshooting

Hello,

we had some air condition failure recently in server room and sadly our hard drives overheated and turned off. Lucky us it was the only piece of hardware that turned off.

There was no damage to our hardware but XSAN admin reports "Incorrect search policy" next to MDC2.

We have three metadata controllers and only this one is being affected. We have open directory (master on mdc1 and replicas on mdc2 and third metadata controller).

In server app on mdc2 open directory service is turned off and any attempt to turn it on will result in "on/off" switch sitting in "on" status for about a minute and afterwards returning to its "off" state.

In server app of mdc1 and mdc3 i can see open directory running normally and both servers are reporting that mdc2 is running replica. Im unable to bind any clients to mdc2...

India's Tussle With Internet Freedom

The Supreme Court of India last week struck down a law that curtailed the freedom of online speech. The law permitted arrests for posting "offensive" content online. The highest court in India ruled that Section 66(A) of the Information Technology Act was unconstitutional, and in its ruling said it had no hesitation in striking it down. The court had examined the legality of the law, which made posting information considered grossly offensive or menacing in character punishable by up to three years in jail.

The 10 Mac games you need to play from March 2015

A month of Mac gaming to savor

It’s a wide selection of experiences—large and small—spanning a nice array of genres: City building, role-playing, strategy, simulation, action, puzzle, and more. And what’s especially great is that almost every game on this list launched at the same time as on other platforms—waiting for ports is much less of a concern on Mac these days.

Baselworld, where the watch is still the greatest...

The new York Times:

For one week in March, this glittering watch and jewelry show (which ran March 19 to 26), attracts 150,000 industry insiders, collectors and fans, emerging from the digital mists of the 21st century like Brigadoon. It is a village unto itself with its own language, values and celebrities.

And a curious village it is. In an iPhone-toting era, where millions go out in public every day flaunting naked wrists, this is one corner of the globe where the wristwatch — that centuries-old feat of micro-engineering once considered as obsolete as the rotary phone — is the only personal productivity device, status symbol and idea on earth that seems to matter.

Interesting how an article about watches can be written this day without ever mentioning the Apple Watch by name. The reporter must have had to twist himself into knots to not get a single relevant quote from any of the assembled “150,000 industry insiders”.

Zero G for iPhone 6 and 6 Plus: Stick your phone...

Zero G Prototype. Photo for Apple World Today by Steve Sande ©2015, All rights reserved.

There are a lot of iPhone cases on the market that use nano-suction material to affix the case to the iPhone, `but this is the first case I think I've seen that uses nano-suction to let you stick the case on just about any clean, flat surface. The Zero G case from Mega Tiny Corporation is currently in a Kickstarter campaign for funding, and if the pre-production device I reviewed is any indication, this could be the wooden stake to put through the heart of selfie sticks.

Why? Well, imagine you want to take a photo with some friends. Instead of pulling out the selfie stick and looking like a total fool, you just walk up to anything with a flat and clean surface and slap the iPhone onto it. It sticks, you take the photo with the self-timer, and then you pull...

Desk version 1.3 adds features, squashes bugs

Developer John Saddington is one very busy guy. About a month ago he released version 1.2 of his popular Desk text/Markdown editor for OS X (US$29.99) to the Mac App Store, and now he’s just finished version 1.3. What has he added to Desk in just a month?

First, Saddington added post formats for WordPress and Tumblr, two of the popular blogging platforms supported in Desk. At the present time, those formats include text, photo, quote and link, and he plans on adding additional formats in the future.

There’s also a Typewriter Mode now. What’s Typewriter Mode? The current line of text that’s being written is always at the bottom of the screen, with the rest of your blog post scrolling above it. It’s actually quite useful!

Desk 1.2 now has a new preview mode, and one feature that is a must for bloggers — scheduled posts. No longer are posts immediately published;...

Cannot add client, client already exists error

Forums: TroubleshootingTags: XSAN3Mavericks

Howdy,
We have just set up XSAN (version 3/Mavericks) with 7 users.
All the users have joined the "Workgroup" by default and all work perfectly well.
We have an 8th client who we can mount as a computer in the XSAN share list, but we cannot add to "Workgroup". Both XSAN Admin (3.1) and Server (3.2.2) advise that user already exists, which is not the case.
We've attempted to remove the computer and add again with no luck.
Any pointers will result in beer.
Simon.

It’s the hiring cycles that show where a company’s going.

Apple has been looking to make significant additions to its battery technology team since the beginning of March, with a special emphasis on iOS devices, newly listed positions available at the company reveal.

At least nine listings posted within the last month are directly connected to battery technology. Some examples include openings for a hardware manager, a firmware development manager, a battery pack engineering manager, a cell engineer, and an electrical engineer.

While some of the positions may be linked to the batteries in Apple’s notebooks, others are more explicitly...

World Backup Day: Best online backup services to...

Today is World Backup Day -- a once-a-year reminder for everyone to assess their backup solution and ensure their data is being saved properly. While many people use a local storage option like a hard drive or NAS to backup their computer files, the conventional backup advice suggests you should also have a secondary backup online in case of fire or theft, which could destroy your local backups. To help you find an online backup up provider, we profile some of the most popular services for archiving your files online.

Backup services are not the same as cloud storage and sync

One confusing area of online storage is the wide variety of services available to individuals. You have popular cloud services like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive and others. Though you can store and backup your files to...

Todoist 10 for iPhone, iPad is the best paper...

The folks at Todoist have released Todoist 10 for iOS, their most ambitious update yet. The changes further solidify my decision to go all-in on Todoist, and make me feel confident that I'll keep my promise to 5by5's Jordan Cooper to not use another task manager for 12 months. Why? Because data entry is so easy now, it's almost equal to the speed of using paper and pen. Here's my look at Todoist 10 for iOS.

When I boarded the mobile productivity train years ago, fresh from the altar of Getting Things Done, I was all excited about projects, tasks and productivity.* I ran out and bought a Palm Tungsten T3 handheld, confident that the little device would be the...

First look: Todoist for iOS gets smarter and better-...

Some people get a thrill from checking items off a hand-written to-do list. Others prefer to manage their lives with feature-packed digital calendars. I am both, and when I discovered Todoist earlier this year, it seemed like the best of both worlds: the ease of managing tasks in a centralized app combined with the simple pleasure of marking tasks off when you finish them. Now Todoist is even better with a facelift that delivers a new look and even more helpful new features.

The popular task management app on Tuesday rolled out a brand new version for iOS that sets the stage for a dramatic, platform-wide overhaul. Some 4 million people use Todoist to add 510,000 projects daily, and share an average of 52,000 tasks a day across millions of projects. Todoist founder and CEO Amir Salihefendic told me his team has been working to make the task management tool’s mobile apps as powerful...

The White House in January proposed updates to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act that have stirred controversy within the cybersecurity industry. Ericsson’s attempt to have the iPhone banned from US sale over a patent dispute moved one step forward yesterday as the ITC agreed to investigate. Ericsson claims that iPhones infringe a number of its patents for fundamental cellphone technologies, including both GSM and LTE. Apple denies any infringement, and says that Ericsson is in any case demanding unreasonable amounts.

In an attempt to up the ante, Ericsson called on the U.S. International Trade Commission to block imports of the iPhone into the country, and the ITC has now agreed to carry out an investigation, reports PC World.

Apple to announce Q2 2015 earnings on April 27th

Apple today updated its investor relations page to confirm that it will announce its quarterly earnings for Q2 2015 on Monday April 27th [Via MacRumors]. The quarterly earnings statement will be released at approximately 1:30 PM PDT/4:30 PM EDT followed by an earnings call to discuss the results at 2:00 PM PDT/5:00 PM EDT. Apple World Today will hold a liveblog with commentary on the call.

The earnings report will include iPhone, iPad and Mac sales in the first three calendar months of 2015. It will not include the Apple Watch, which will go on sale three days before the earnings release.

Our take on the news:

Last quarter, Apple announced record revenue from iPhone and Mac sales thanks to strong holiday sales. Most companies show a decline due to the post-Holiday slump in sales, so it'll be interesting to...

On the first day Apple World Today was open for business (Feb. 9, 2015), our first published review was about the Twelve South ParcSlope (US$49.95, affiliate link), an aluminum stand for MacBook. While the ParcSlope gathered a five-star rating from AWT for its sleek design and solid construction, it's hardly a stand that you can take with you everywhere. Little did we know at the time that Twelve South had another, much more portable MacBook stand waiting in the wings. The BaseLift for MacBook ($39.99) is now available from Twelve South, and it can be used anywhere to give your laptop a lift and your thighs some insulation from the heat (...
