Editorial: The super exciting failure of CES 2018

After working hard to dismiss iPhone X as too expensive, AirPods as a very minor success and HomePod as far-off vaporware missing the window of opportunity afforded to smart speakers, the low-paid writers hired by the Associated Press, Bloomberg, CNET and Reuters to fill the gaps that regular staff can't get to are again converging on Las Vegas to depict the really big prototype TV concepts of CES as being potentially affordable, commercially significant at some point in the future--and anything but vaporware.

Rumor: Apple plans to invest in LG Innotek

Apple plans to invest in LG Innotek in order to secure a steady supply of 3D sensing modules for this year’s iPhones and iPads, according to The Investor. The sensing module, which enables a mobile device to capture 3-D data and recognize a user even in a dark environment, is a key component of iPhone X’s facial recognition solution.

Quoting unnamed sources, The Investor says Apple has decided to offer financial support for LG Innotek in the form of an upfront payment (though the exact amount is unknown). Some market watchers said the move would be in line with a temporary supply shortage of the 3-D sensing modules late last year, which had affected the sales of iPhone X.

Chances that the rumor is true, according to the Sellers Research Group (that’s me): 90%. It makes sense that Apple would take this step considering the problems it had at one point with iPhone X...

A new study from Juniper Research has found that the global number of registered mobile domestic money transfer users is expected to reach 2.5 billion this year, up from an estimated 1.7 billion in 2016.

Frontier SmartSDK adds support for Apple AirPlay 2

Frontier Smart Technologies is adding support for AirPlay 2 to its SmartSDK (software development kit). The company is previewing its AirPlay 2 implementation at this year’s CES.

Announced in June, AirPlay 2 adds multi-room audio capabilities to AirPlay’s existing abilities. It also enables the use of Siri to initiate and control playback to compatible speakers and devices (such as the Apple TV).

AirPlay 2 is Apple’s followup to the original AirPlay Wi-Fi-based music playback standard. While Sonos popularized Wi-Fi-based multi-room audio playback, Bluetooth became ubiquitous, and multi-platform Wi-Fi audio standards spread in popularity, the tech giant lacked a competing story until today’s announcement.

The Frontier SmartSDK is a multi-ecosystem software solution that enables third party brands and manufacturers to develop smart audio products quickly and cost-effectively, according to Frontier Smart...

Amalgram Insights: Apple could lose $10 billion in...

Amalgam Insights, a consulting and strategy firm, predicts that Apple stands to lose as much as $10 billion in 2018 from delayed revenues associated with “Batterygate” — its disclosure about batteries in older iPhones.

Hyoun Park, CEO at Amalgam Insights, writes in a new blog post that as many as 15 million owners of older iPhones, such as the iPhone 6 and 7, will take advantage of Apple’s offer to replace their older batteries.

“Given that the average iPhone sale was roughly $650 in the last fiscal year,” he writes, “this means that Apple will get roughly $300-$400 million in services revenue and postpone refresh revenue of roughly $5 – $10 billion over the next year as a result.”

Apple disclosed last month that it had configured its operating software in the phones to slow down the performance of older iPhones as their batteries aged. Park says this may give companies with large iPhone...

Rumor: Next-gen iPhone SE to incorporate glass back...

Given that wireless charging is pretty hip these days, it comes as no surprise that this is a rumored feature for the next-gen iPhone SE.

“A very reliable source” has stated that the iPhone SE 2 will feature an all-glass back. That’s a change from the current iPhone SE which has glass panels along the top and bottom rear but is mostly aluminum. The handset is also expected to undergo a speed boost.

Recently, Apple adopted glass backs to the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X to support wireless charging.

Such a change would be a significant step forward, even for a budget device, and help to embrace wireless charging as an overall standard.

Apple’s iPhone SE is currently powered by the A9 chip used in the iPhone 6s from late 2015. A previous rumor claimed the new iPhone SE, which could be expected to launch around March or April, will be upgraded to the A10 chip used in the iPhone 7 introduced a year later.

Apple releases macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, iOS 11.2.2...

As tired as you are of hearing about the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, Apple has just released something that could help with part of these.

The company has released both a macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 and iOS 11.2.2 supplemental update designed to help prevent Spectre attacks in the current Mac and iOS operating systems. Prior to this, there was still the possibility of exploiting the Spectre vulnerability through Javascript in the Safari browser.

While there’s no absolute fix against the vulnerabilities, this patch, and others like it, can help mitigate the risk and make the bug that much harder to exploit.

The patch repairs Apple’s WKWebView API to display the web content with Apple’s WebKit implementation and thus fixes every app that displays web content on your iOS device and should be installed immediately.

On the macOS end, the macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 supplemental app helps secure Safari and apps that use Apple’s...

Nvidia's GeForce Now Windows App Transforms...

The GeForce Now game streaming service that Nvidia announced for the Mac last year is finally coming to Windows PCs. According to their website, the service lets you stream high-resolution games from your PC to your Mac or Windows PC that may or may not have the power to run the games natively. Starting this week, beta users of the GeForce Now Mac client will be able to install and run the Windows app. Tom Warren reports via The Verge: I got a chance to play with an early beta of the GeForce Now service on a $400 Windows PC at CES today. My biggest concerns about game streaming services are latency and internet connections, but Nvidia had the service setup using a 50mbps connection on the Wynn hotel's Wi-Fi. I didn't notice a single issue, and it honestly felt like I was playing Player Unknown's Battlegrounds directly on the cheap laptop in front of me. If I actually tried to play the game locally, it would be impossible as the game was barely rendering at all or at 2fps. Nvidia is...

Apple Investigated By France For 'Planned...

AmiMoJo shares a report from the BBC: French prosecutors have launched a probe over allegations of "planned obsolescence" in Apple's iPhone. Under French law it is a crime to intentionally shorten the lifespan of a product with the aim of making customers replace it. In December, Apple admitted that older iPhone models were deliberately slowed down through software updates. It follows a legal complaint filed in December by pro-consumer group Stop Planned Obsolescence (Hop). Hop said France was the third country to investigate Apple after Israel and the U.S., but the only one in which the alleged offense was a crime. Penalties could include up to 5% of annual turnover or even a jail term.
