Amalgram Insights: Apple could lose $10 billion in...

Amalgam Insights, a consulting and strategy firm, predicts that Apple stands to lose as much as $10 billion in 2018 from delayed revenues associated with “Batterygate” — its disclosure about batteries in older iPhones.

Hyoun Park, CEO at Amalgam Insights, writes in a new blog post that as many as 15 million owners of older iPhones, such as the iPhone 6 and 7, will take advantage of Apple’s offer to replace their older batteries.

“Given that the average iPhone sale was roughly $650 in the last fiscal year,” he writes, “this means that Apple will get roughly $300-$400 million in services revenue and postpone refresh revenue of roughly $5 – $10 billion over the next year as a result.”

Apple disclosed last month that it had configured its operating software in the phones to slow down the performance of older iPhones as their batteries aged. Park says this may give companies with large iPhone...

Following the request by a couple of Apple shareholders asking the company to study the impact of heavy smartphone use by children and teenagers, as well as offer more parental restrictions on iPhones, the tech giant said it plans new features to help parents control how children use its smartphones.

"Apple has always looked out for kids, and we work hard to create powerful products that inspire, entertain, and educate children while also helping parents protect them online," a spokeswoman told Bloomberg in a statement.

iOS devices already allow parents control and restrict what their children consume, including apps, movies, websites, songs and books, as well as cellular data,...

Leawo Tunes Cleaner can help you clean up your...

There are a variety of tools to help you manage and repair your iTunes library. If, like me, you buy the bulk of your music online, eventually you're going to need such an utility. One of the simplest, and fastest, is Leawo Tunes Cleaner.

It proved helpful with my 4,000-plus song iTunes library, a hodgepodge of ripped CDs and iTunes purchases. With a few steps, you can use Leawo Tunes Cleaner to help you delete duplicates in iTunes, get album artwork, add missed music tags (including artists and albums), add music information (by searching key tags of music files via manual fixing). It can also open and repair external music folders -- as long as you have iTunes 10 or higher installed.

When you launch Tunes Cleaner, you're given three choices: Start to Clean iTunes, Open Music File, and Load Saved Results. You can choose music files you want to fix under every list to start to clean up iTunes and fix iTunes music files. Or you can simply click the Fix All button to...

Rumor: Next-gen iPhone SE to incorporate glass back...

Given that wireless charging is pretty hip these days, it comes as no surprise that this is a rumored feature for the next-gen iPhone SE.

“A very reliable source” has stated that the iPhone SE 2 will feature an all-glass back. That’s a change from the current iPhone SE which has glass panels along the top and bottom rear but is mostly aluminum. The handset is also expected to undergo a speed boost.

Recently, Apple adopted glass backs to the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X to support wireless charging.

Such a change would be a significant step forward, even for a budget device, and help to embrace wireless charging as an overall standard.

Apple’s iPhone SE is currently powered by the A9 chip used in the iPhone 6s from late 2015. A previous rumor claimed the new iPhone SE, which could be expected to launch around March or April, will be upgraded to the A10 chip used in the iPhone 7 introduced a year later.

Apple releases macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, iOS 11.2.2...

As tired as you are of hearing about the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, Apple has just released something that could help with part of these.

The company has released both a macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 and iOS 11.2.2 supplemental update designed to help prevent Spectre attacks in the current Mac and iOS operating systems. Prior to this, there was still the possibility of exploiting the Spectre vulnerability through Javascript in the Safari browser.

While there’s no absolute fix against the vulnerabilities, this patch, and others like it, can help mitigate the risk and make the bug that much harder to exploit.

The patch repairs Apple’s WKWebView API to display the web content with Apple’s WebKit implementation and thus fixes every app that displays web content on your iOS device and should be installed immediately.

On the macOS end, the macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 supplemental app helps secure Safari and apps that use Apple’s...

Nvidia's GeForce Now Windows App Transforms...

The GeForce Now game streaming service that Nvidia announced for the Mac last year is finally coming to Windows PCs. According to their website, the service lets you stream high-resolution games from your PC to your Mac or Windows PC that may or may not have the power to run the games natively. Starting this week, beta users of the GeForce Now Mac client will be able to install and run the Windows app. Tom Warren reports via The Verge: I got a chance to play with an early beta of the GeForce Now service on a $400 Windows PC at CES today. My biggest concerns about game streaming services are latency and internet connections, but Nvidia had the service setup using a 50mbps connection on the Wynn hotel's Wi-Fi. I didn't notice a single issue, and it honestly felt like I was playing Player Unknown's Battlegrounds directly on the cheap laptop in front of me. If I actually tried to play the game locally, it would be impossible as the game was barely rendering at all or at 2fps. Nvidia is...

Apple Investigated By France For 'Planned...

AmiMoJo shares a report from the BBC: French prosecutors have launched a probe over allegations of "planned obsolescence" in Apple's iPhone. Under French law it is a crime to intentionally shorten the lifespan of a product with the aim of making customers replace it. In December, Apple admitted that older iPhone models were deliberately slowed down through software updates. It follows a legal complaint filed in December by pro-consumer group Stop Planned Obsolescence (Hop). Hop said France was the third country to investigate Apple after Israel and the U.S., but the only one in which the alleged offense was a crime. Penalties could include up to 5% of annual turnover or even a jail term.

iOS and macOS updates available now address Spectre...

Enlarge / 2017's MacBook is the first I'd truly be happy to use as my everyday notebook. (credit: Andrew Cunningham)

Metldown and Spectre security risks affecting nearly every modern processor came to light last week, and now Apple has released a pair of software updates to address the Spectre vulnerability. iOS 11.2.2 and macOS High Sierra 10.13.2, while sparse in detail, are both now available for free on compatible devices.

iOS 11.2.2 for iPhone and iPad contains security fixes that aren't fully fleshed out, but Apple does say that they affect Safari and Webkit to "mitigate the effects of Spectre." Apple claims the Metldown vulnerability was addressed in...

Review: Naim Atom All-In-One Music Player

A few years ago, there was a call by technologists for so-called "honest" design. In that paradigm, it should be immediately clear what devices can do — and can't do — simply by looking at them. Much of the audio gear we review follows that principle — ports on the back, knobs and buttons on the front. The Uniti Atom from British hi-fi manufacturer Naim, an "all-in-one" music streamer and integrated amplifier — does not. Monolothic, black, rectangular, and expensive, the Atom is an extremely dense piece of technology that requires a deep dive to discover its full potential. Though the Atom is undeniably a luxury device with a high price tag that puts up too high a barrier for most, it really is "all in one." The Naim Atom delivers on looks, features, and performance, and we love it.{/exp:char_limit}

Days after Apple disclosed how it would be dealing with the Meltdown bug that affects modern computers, it's pushed out fixes for the Spectre exploit as well. Apple releases iOS 11.2.2 and macOS 10.13.2 updates...

Are you tired of hearing about Meltdown and Spectre yet? Well, get used to it, because the security updates keep on coming!

As we mentioned in our FAQ, Apple has already mitigated the effects of Meltdown on Macs in macOS 10.13.2, and of Spectre in iOS devices in iOS 11.2. But at the time of Apple's first announcement last week, there was still the possibility of exploiting the Spectre vulnerability through Javascript in the Safari browser. Apple promised an update to mitigate that avenue of attack was coming soon.

iOS 11.2.2 is that update. As we’ve explained before, there is no “fix” for Spectre—it’s endemic to the way nearly every modern processor with speculative execution operates. But patches can help mitigate the risk, making it much harder for Spectre to be exploited.

GBH Insights: expect Apple’s HomePod to arrive in 4-...

In a note to clients — as noted by 9to5Mac — GBH Insights says it expects Apple’s HomePod to arrive in 4-6 weeks, but that it will face an uphill climb as it seeks to compete with competitors such as Amazon and Google’s Alphabet division. The research group writes:

We will be closely watching this competitive dynamic against the likes of Amazon and Google, Apple’s aggressive marketing push, and the installed base uptake of HomePod in 1H18 as this represents a pivotal window of opportunity for Cook & Co. to establish their presence in this green field smart speaker market which could be a “gate opener” to other consumer products/functionality further down the road.

The $349 HomePod is just under seven inches tall and looks like a piece of furniture. It will be available in both space gray and white, and also acts as a hub for HomeKit devices to provide remote...
