Enlarge / 2017's MacBook is the first I'd truly be happy to use as my everyday notebook. (credit: Andrew Cunningham)

iOS 11.2.2 for iPhone and iPad contains security fixes that aren't fully fleshed out, but Apple does say that they affect Safari and Webkit to "mitigate the effects of Spectre." Apple claims the Metldown vulnerability was addressed in...

Review: Naim Atom All-In-One Music Player

A few years ago, there was a call by technologists for so-called "honest" design. In that paradigm, it should be immediately clear what devices can do — and can't do — simply by looking at them. Much of the audio gear we review follows that principle — ports on the back, knobs and buttons on the front. The Uniti Atom from British hi-fi manufacturer Naim, an "all-in-one" music streamer and integrated amplifier — does not. Monolothic, black, rectangular, and expensive, the Atom is an extremely dense piece of technology that requires a deep dive to discover its full potential. Though the Atom is undeniably a luxury device with a high price tag that puts up too high a barrier for most, it really is "all in one." The Naim Atom delivers on looks, features, and performance, and we love it.{/exp:char_limit}

Apple releases iOS 11.2.2 and macOS 10.13.2 updates...

Are you tired of hearing about Meltdown and Spectre yet? Well, get used to it, because the security updates keep on coming!

As we mentioned in our FAQ, Apple has already mitigated the effects of Meltdown on Macs in macOS 10.13.2, and of Spectre in iOS devices in iOS 11.2. But at the time of Apple's first announcement last week, there was still the possibility of exploiting the Spectre vulnerability through Javascript in the Safari browser. Apple promised an update to mitigate that avenue of attack was coming soon.

iOS 11.2.2 is that update. As we’ve explained before, there is no “fix” for Spectre—it’s endemic to the way nearly every modern processor with speculative execution operates. But patches can help mitigate the risk, making it much harder for Spectre to be exploited.

GBH Insights: expect Apple’s HomePod to arrive in 4-...

In a note to clients — as noted by 9to5Mac — GBH Insights says it expects Apple’s HomePod to arrive in 4-6 weeks, but that it will face an uphill climb as it seeks to compete with competitors such as Amazon and Google’s Alphabet division. The research group writes:

We will be closely watching this competitive dynamic against the likes of Amazon and Google, Apple’s aggressive marketing push, and the installed base uptake of HomePod in 1H18 as this represents a pivotal window of opportunity for Cook & Co. to establish their presence in this green field smart speaker market which could be a “gate opener” to other consumer products/functionality further down the road.

The $349 HomePod is just under seven inches tall and looks like a piece of furniture. It will be available in both space gray and white, and also acts as a hub for HomeKit devices to provide remote...

Though Apple is offering $29 battery replacements to any customer with an iPhone 6 or newer regardless of diagnostic test results, this policy can only be taken advantage of once, according to new fine print on its iPhone service pricing page — as noted by MacRumors.

After you've had your iPhone's battery replaced once this year, the device must explicitly fail the diagnostic test to qualify for any additional battery replacements for $29. If the test passes, a customer can still choose to have the battery replaced, but Apple's standard $79 fee applies.

After addressing vulnerabilities in processors that left iOS and Mac devices open to security issues nicknamed Meltdown and Spectre, Apple is now convinced than the fixes rolled out to remedy the problems will have “little to no performance impact,” Reuters reports. Apple admitted that its devices were vulnerable to exploits that “abuse speculative execution to access privileged memory —including that of the kernel — from a less-privileged…

Apple Should Address Youth Phone Addiction, Say Two...

Two large Apple shareholders, Jana Partners and the California State Teachers' Retirement System, are urging Apple to take steps to address what they say is a growing problem of young people getting addicted to Apple's iPhones, Jana partner Charles Penner said. From a report: Jana, a leading activist shareholder, and CalSTRS, one of the nation's largest public pension plans, delivered a letter to Apple on Saturday asking the company to consider developing software that would allow parents to limit children's phone use, the Wall Street Journal reported earlier on Sunday. Jana and CalSTRS also asked Apple to study the impact of excessive phone use on mental health, according to the publication. Jana and CalSTRS together control about $2 billion worth of Apple shares, the Journal reports.

Prince playing jazz piano, coaching his band through...

[VIDEO] Open Culture:

We do not typically remember [Prince] as a jazz pianist. But his facility with jazz earned him the admiration of Miles Davis, who made several efforts to collaborate with the extremely busy pop star. (They performed together only once, it seems, on New Year’s Eve, 1987 at Paisley Park.) Prince’s style, stage show, songwriting, and arranging drew from jazz of all kinds—from zoot suit-era big band to the frenetic movement of hard bop to the classically-inflected show tunes of George Gershwin. Just above see him “casually own” Gershwin’s “Summertime” during a 1990 soundcheck in Osaka, Japan.

I had no idea Prince even played piano, let along so well. I love this video (embedded in the main Loop post). The groove is right there, with Prince driving. Super talented.

“…we believe Apple would once again be playing a pioneering role, this time by setting an example about the obligations of technology companies to their youngest customers.  As a company that prides itself on values like inclusiveness, quality education, environmental protection, and supplier responsibility, Apple would also once again be showcasing the innovative spirit that made you the most valuable public company...

Federal judge sanctions Apple for $300,000 in...

A federal magistrate judge in California said Friday he’ll sanction Apple to the tune of $300,000 for missing a document production deadline in antitrust suits brought against Qualcomm by the Federal Trade Commission and a putative class of cellphone buyers, reports Law360.

In December Apple was ordered to pay $25,000 each day it failed to produce evidence related to an FTC case against Qualcomm. U.S. Magistrate Judge Nathanael Cousins said the tech giant had until Dec. 29 to turn in the documents or the amount would increase. And it has.

Last week Apple asked a California federal court to nix a $25,000-per-day fine, arguing that the sanctions imposed by a magistrate judge last month for delays in producing...
