Apple, A123 To Settle Lawsuit Over Poached Battery...

itwbennett writes: Slashdot readers will remember that back in February, electric car battery maker A123 Systems sued Apple for allegedly "raiding" the Waltham, Massachusetts, company and hiring five employees, including two top-level engineers. The loss of these workers essentially forced A123 to shut down some of its main projects, the suit alleged. Now, according to court documents filed Monday, A123 and Apple "have reached an agreement, signed a term sheet, and are in the process of drafting a final settlement agreement."

Speck CandyShell FIT keeps your Apple Watch looking...

There's a fear common to anyone who owns an Apple Watch -- the fear of scratching that beautiful little device by unexpectedly bumping it into something. Speck's new CandyShell FIT (US$29.95) will make you feel a lot less fearful by offering dual-layer protection and a raised bezel to protect your investment.

I had an opportunity to try out the CandyShell FIT, which will ship later this month in a variety of colors. This little case comes in sizes for both the 38mm and 42mm Watches, and features the same dual-layer design that is common to Speck's CandyShell cases for iPhone. Inside the hard outside shell is a soft silicone layer. The shell protects the watch from impacts while the silicone softens the blow. Should your wrist accidentally slam into something hard like the side of a table or car door, the 1.5mm raised bezel reduces the chance that the Force Touch display of the Watch will get...

Tesla has taken its recruiting of Apple employees to the next level: the electric car and energy company has hired away Apple’s Senior Director of Corporate Recruiting, Cindy Nicola, to become Tesla’s new Vice President of Global Recruiting. Nicola has already noted her new role and start month of May on her LinkedIn profile.

Notably, Apple actually hired away Tesla’s Lead Recruiter in 2014 for its own electric car project, as we noted in our extensive profile of Apple’s automotive related hires. Interestingly, that...

Review: Skech Base for iPad Air 2

Skech's Base ($45) is a folio-style case for iPad Air 2. Base is a hard plastic shell surrounded by a soft waxed fabric cover, and soft microfiber lines the inside of the case. Like many folio cases for iPad, Base uses the cover as a stand, enabling multiple viewing angles. But instead of using magnets or notches, Base has a thin Velcro strip attached to the side of its shell, which is used to stand up the iPad. The case comes in three different colors: blue, pink, and black.{/exp:char_limit}

Apple’s TestFlight-based App Analytics service is now available to all registered iOS developers through the iTunes Connect interface. Apple recently made App Analytics available to select developers upon request (which were fulfilled in a short amount of time), but starting today all developers can access the service without the need for requesting access.

While the service is still labeled with the ‘beta’ disclaimer, Apple has started notifying developers via email of the new feature availability for everyone.

Last week we shared a first look at Apple’s App Analytics service...

Update: A Hulu representative reached out to clarify the AT&T partnership.

"Through the AT&T apps and websites, AT&T video customers will be able to see clips and select short form content (similar to the free content we have on Hulu.com today). They will be able to search and browse through the entire Hulu content in the app. If they’d like to view subscription content they’ll be linked out to Hulu (either the app or website) to view it. From there, new subscribers will be able to subscribe to Hulu and existing subscribers will sign in."

Lily is taking the selfie up a notch. The startup on Tuesday began taking preorders for a drone camera that will shoot video and stills as it flies above you. While drone cameras have been on the market for some time, the Lily offering combines the popularity of first-person video cameras, like the wildly successful GoPro line of products, with the emerging consumer flying drone market. The Lily cam's robustness could set it off from the competition, noted Andrew Amato, editor-in-chief and cofounder of Dronelife.

Podcast: Beta think twice, it's all right

It’s been a pretty slow news week in the Mac world. (Unless you’re excited about Verizon plunking down $4.4 billion for AOL—yes, that AOL.) New betas are out for Yosemite as well as iOS 8.4, so we discuss how to get an early peek at the next iterations of Apple’s operating systems—and if you’re better off waiting for the final versions.

Facebook Instant Articles quickly bring news to one...

Facebook wants to be your one-stop shop for news, with the introduction yesterday of Instant Articles, a way for publishers to get interactive articles to readers instantly.

Facebook responded to complaints from publishers that it was taking too long for shared stories to appear on mobile devices -- smartphones in particular -- by working with those companies to create a platform that brings photos, videos, and text to readers in no time at all.

Instant Articles also provides those who are viewing the content on mobile phones with some interactive features that are quite compelling: auto-play videos show up as you scroll through a story, maps can show where a photo was taken, and audio captions provide the background behind a photo or story. Readers can like or comment on small segments of a story in-line.

For publishers, Instant Articles are providing new ways to monetize content. Publishers have...

Is this Samsung’s answer to the Apple Watch’s...

New details about Samsung’s next-generation smartwatch have appeared in the latest build of the Gear developer kit that reveal how the device will look and—perhaps more importantly—how it will serve as an answer to the Apple Watch.

Unlike current Gear models and the Apple Watch, the next Gear will sport a circular display (hence its codename, “Orbis”) with a metal crown and frame. The crown, however, is not the most interesting part. In a departure from Apple’s crown-based navigation system, the Gear SDK indicates that the watch may actually be controlled by a completely different part of the watch.

According to a report from SamMobile, tech specs and design elements included in the new...

How to back up and restore your Apple Watch

Backing up and restoring an Apple Watch is not unlike backing up and restoring an iDevice. Andrew Cunningham

One thing we didn't manage to touch on in our otherwise comprehensive Apple Watch and Watch OS review is the backup and restore process—what you'll need to do if you ever switch watches or iPhones. Yesterday, Apple released a new support document outlining just how the backup process works, what gets backed up, what doesn't get backed up, and when it gets backed up.

Apple says the watch is automatically backed up to your iPhone, but if you really want to be sure you...

BitTorrent has released new free apps for communicating securely. Bleep is available both as a freely downloaded iOS app on the iOS App Store, and as a Mac app that can be downloaded from the Bleep website. Both set up direct peer-to-peer encrypted communications that cannot be intercepted as no messages are ever stored in the cloud. There's not even a signup process, so nobody has to know you're using Bleep.

If you're sending text messages or photos, Bleep provides two ways of communicating: Whispers are text and image messages that disappear once they've been read, and Messages are stored locally on the device. Of course, Whispers can be bypassed simply by taking a screenshot of whatever's on the screen, but we're all smart adults, right? Except for politicians and celebrities... Voice calls are also available with that same ...

After installing the update, users can browse top news items and local weather reports on their Watches. Some of the articles are accompanied by images, but looking at photos on the Apple Watch is less than ideal.

One nice feature is that a Force Touch on an article sends it to Safari Reading List, so you can read it full-screen when you get a chance.

Big Data Analytics Fights Insider Threats

Cyberdefenders for years have adopted Fort Apache strategies to protect their networks. Strong perimeters could prevent attackers from reaching precious data, they reasoned. As technology marched on, however, the idea of an impermeable wall became as quaint as the Maginot Line on the eve of World War II. Firewalls alone no longer were strong enough to keep data safe. The mantra emanating from security circles was "It's not if you'll be breached, it's when."

BitTorrent's serverless chat app Bleep arrives...

BitTorrent’s anonymous peer-to-peer messaging app Bleep is now available on iOS after almost a year of testing.

You don’t need to sign up to use Bleep. Like the chat rooms of the olden Internet days, all you have to do is pick a screenname to get started. You can verify your email address and phone number with the app to help people discover and add you in the app, or you can share your Bleep key out to trusted friends. BitTorrent doesn’t use the cloud or store your messages, photos, or data.

BitTorrent has been working on Bleep for quite some time, and has already built out a solid messaging app that includes free voice calling with end-to-end encryption. With iOS, the company is rolling out a new Snapchat-like feature, Whisper, which introduces disappearing messages to the already secure app. You can switch between...

How-To: Clean your iOS device with free downloads,...

When Apple was designing the Mac app iDVD, then-CEO Steve Jobs directed his development team to build a dead-simple DVD-burning application: instead of a mess of options and windows, Jobs wanted one window with one button marked “Burn,” which would be pressed once the desired video file was dragged-and-dropped into the window. Years later, when Jobs wanted Apple’s iOS devices to be even simpler, he dumped the Mac’s windows and drag-and-drop file system in favor of a grid of icons. There wasn’t even a trash can to worry about — instead, iOS would automatically discard unused files as needed.

While that’s great in theory, the reality is that iOS actually leaves bits of trash sitting around on your device, and there’s no easy way to clean everything up at once. iTunes aggregates various types of lingering files as...

Apps to keep track of all your favorite TV shows

Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and the more recent HBO Now have drastically changed our TV-viewing habits as on-demand binge-watching becomes the norm. However, new television shows are not often included in streaming services and most major networks still unveil their programming on a week-to-week basis.

In order to help you never miss an episode, Sunrise, the popular desktop and mobile calendar app that was acquired by Microsoft in February, is letting TV fans keep track of their favorite shows. This week the calendar service began including TV airing schedules under their “Interesting Calendars” feature. Sunrise users can now subscribe to the schedules for more than 70 U.S. channels, including ABC, Bravo, and HBO. Previously, Sunrise gave users the option...

Apple Watch stands up to extreme water submersion in...

The Apple Watch has an IPX7 waterproof rating, which means it can survive dunks up to three feet deep and still work. Apple doesn’t recommend showering, swimming, or diving with the watch, and most people will abide by that advice. But not triathlete Ray Maker, who did everything to his Watch Sport that Apple warns against.

People have already taken Apple Watch for a few laps in their backyard pools without incident (and posted the results to YouTube), but Maker took his Sport for a 1,000-meter swim and it still worked perfectly when he emerged from the water. Check out the results below.

Broadcom offers up software support for Apple’s...

If you're excited to start controlling the rest of your appliances with your iPhone (or your Apple Watch), the good news is that Apple's HomeKit initiative is slowly picking up steam. Broadcom announced today that its Wireless Internet Connectivity for Embedded Devices (WICED) SDK fully supports HomeKit, enabling smart devices that use compatible Broadcom Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips to tie into Apple's connected home framework.

Broadcom's announcement follows two months after Marvell announced its own SDK's support for HomeKit.

HomeKit allows users to control their connected devices using iPhone apps or Siri voice controls. As we originally covered in our iOS 8 review, HomeKit splits your home up into different "containers," which can then be subdivided into "rooms" and "zones."...

Swiftkey's Clarity Keyboard Puts Auto-...

Most auto-correction programs correct mistakes as you make them. They even predict words for you as you type. Swiftkey's recent release for Android, Clarity Keyboard Beta, corrects mistakes -- up to several at a time -- after you've typed them. "SwiftKey, for a long time, has had context awareness, but it's applied it looking forward," explained SwitfKey's CMO Joe Braidwood. "It's applied it to thinking what the next word might be or what the current word is, even if you're typing it sloppily, based on words you've typed before."

The fifteen-second clip shows Allegra tapping, panning and zooming on the Google homepage on the Apple Watch, but the functionality is limited as to be expected because of the small screen size and lack of an on-screen keyboard.

“I always wanted a web browser on my wrist,” tweeted Allegra. Allegra stopped short of providing details about the hack, but it’s still an interesting...

Rumor: Rose gold color, 12MP camera, additional RAM...

The rumor mill is humming about the next-gen iPhone for 2015. So far, there are rumors of a rose gold casing color similar to the Apple Watch Edition, a 12-megapixel camera and 2-gigabytes of RAM and other changes.

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities issued a new research note on Tuesday, in which he revealed a number of changes planned for Apple’s so-called “iPhone 6s.” Specifically, he said that Apple will offer a new rose gold option, though he didn’t indicate how much the high-end luxury model might cost.

Apple first introduced the “gold” color with the iPhone 5s beginning in 2013. However, iPhone models to date have not been made of...

With the Apple Watch released a few weeks ago and still making its way to customers around the world, Twelve South has started shipping its signature HiRise dock designed for any Apple Watch model. While the Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Cable offers a simple and convenient way of juicing the device even in the dark, the issues with Apple’s MagSafe technology still remain including an overly easy way to accidentally remove the charging magnet from the Apple Watch.

While HiRise still uses the same charging cable, its form factor helps alleviate the issue of your watch separating from the power source while offering a more attractive presentation of your Apple Watch. With its $50 asking price, though, how does Twelve South HiRise for Apple Watch stack up as one of the first charging stands? Read on for the details and more photos…...

FileMaker Pro turns 30, celebrates with the...

For most of us who have been around the Mac community since the beginning, the first name that comes to mind when we think of database applications is FileMaker Pro. The app first came out in 1985, and it was a flat-file database app that really showed off the power of the Mac’s graphical user interface. 30 years later, FileMaker has just taken the wraps off of the latest incarnation of the platform, FileMaker Pro 14.

The original database program has evolved from a single-user flat-file database to a powerful, programmable relational database management system complete with a server component for workgroups and an iOS app known as FileMaker Go.

The newly updated platform takes advantage of mobility by allowing users and developers to create business processes that can be accessed from mobile devices, desktops, and from web browsers....

Verizon buying AOL for $4.4B

Verizon Communications is buying AOL for $4.4B in a deal believed to be focused on Verizon’s ambitions in mobile video and advertising.

The acquisition would give Verizon, which has set its sights on entering the crowded online video marketplace, access to advanced technology AOL has developed for selling ads and delivering high-quality Web video.

Traditional TV viewing is changing dramatically, consumers not only giving up their cable TV subscriptions in favor of video on demand over the Internet (a market Apple is believed to be planning to enter in the fall), but increasingly watching video on mobile devices …

While Verizon has so far revealed few...

Artwork by shoplemonde.de

A special Top 11 list today from noted analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on the next iPhone (6s? 7?) that will be released later this year. Counting down:

  1. Force Touch will be the biggest upgraded selling point, but also one of the main bottlenecks of the supply chain. Force Touch can enrich user experience due to more input methods and support of handwritten signatures, which is beneficial for expanding in the commercial market
  2. Screen will remain at 4.7 and 5.5 inches, with resolution the same as existing models. There will be no new 4-inch model
  3. There will be an additional casing color, rose gold, matching the rose-gold Apple Watch Edition
  4. The camera will have a pixel upgrade, likely to 12MP
  5. One microphone...

Freemium Field Test: Mortal Kombat X looks the part...

Free-to-play games often look appealing, but it’s difficult to know at a glance whether the business model is insidious and fun ruining, or reasonable and worth pumping a few bucks into. With Freemium Field Test, we’ll take a recent free-to-play iOS game, put it through its paces, and let you know if it’s really worth your time (and money).

The arrival of a brand new Mortal Kombat game on iOS is a big deal, especially since the only previous release was a butchered port of the years-old Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Instead, Mortal Kombat X hit the App Store in April at the same time as the acclaimed console and PC game, with similarly sharp graphics, plenty of intense fighting action, and a heaping helping of blood and...

Hearing aids are pretty sophisticated pieces of technology these days, capable of adjusting the sound they pick up to suit a range of different environments, from a noisy restaurant to a windy day outside. A button allows users to cycle between modes, but some go further, an app allowing the user to fine-tune things like the arc of sound captured, letting them hear what is being said by companions while blocking out extraneous sound.

In a video on CNN Money, a man whose hearing was badly affected by a brain tumor demonstrates how an app on his Apple Watch allows him to control his ReSound hearing-aid …

The app lets him choose modes, including one where the hearing aid acts as...

Malware hidden in Nvidia GPUs can infect Macs too,...

Anonymous developers who have successfully infected Nvidia GPU cards with malware on both Linux and Windows machines say that the same can be done on Macs, and that they will release the proof soon. The team successfully created a piece of malware called WIN_JELLY which acts as a Remote Access Tool, enabling attackers to control a machine over the Internet. They now plan to release a version for OS X called MAC_JELLY, demonstrating that Macs too are vulnerable.

There are, they say, two core problems. First, the growing power of modern GPUs means...
