Sears-owned retailer Kmart has declared that it has suffered a massive data breach. The company said late Friday that a malware attack began on its point-of-sale computer systems in early September that was "new form of malware" and "similar to a computer virus." Few details have been released by Kmart, but the company warns that it could include every shopper between September 1 and Thursday, October 9. Online shoppers were not impacted by the breach....

iOS 8 How-to: Use Camera to enter in credit card info

With iOS 7, Apple added a new feature in iBooks, iTunes and the App Store that allowed users to scan iTunes gift cards with the device’s camera rather than manually entering the string of characters on the back of the card. Now in iOS 8, you can use the device’s camera to scan and enter credit card information.

To add your credit card for purchases open up Settings and tap on Safari.

Then tap on Passwords & AutoFill. Here you will notice that by default that Names and Passwords, and Credit Cards...

Hands On: Denied (OS X)

Since it's now commonplace to regularly listen to randomly generated or pre-curated music playlists, there will inevitably be songs you're not a fan of thrown into those mixes. Denied for Mac does one thing, and does it really well - it spares you from songs you don't care to hear, while streaming content from subscription-based platforms or iTunes. Though a convenient addition to an average listening experience, is it worth paying for?...

Apple 'Yosemi-fies' iTunes 12 beta's...

The flatter, more minimalist look sported by both iOS 7 and 8 as well as the forthcoming OS X 10.10 Yosemite has reached iTunes, or at least the version currently being beta-tested for imminent release. With OS X Yosemite and iOS 8.1 expected to be unveiled next week at Apple's press event, the music management and storefront application that ties into most users' iOS devices for media access has gained a whiter, flatter interface that does away with shadows and 3D effects in favor of clean lines and subtle buttons....

Many retailers currently have no plans to implement...

When announcing Apple Pay last month, Apple showed off a list of launch partners that would be putting the NFC-powered iPhone payment system to work in October, including McDonald’s, Nike, and Macy’s. However, the Daily Dot has compiled a list of businesses that don’t currently have plans to adopt Apple’s mobile payment system, and there are some notable entries on the list.

Of course, it doesn’t seem unexpected that many businesses that didn’t have early access to the hardware and software that makes up Apple Pay would be without current plans to adopt the technology. Many of the companies gave a “non-statement,” so to speak, confirming that they are considering the possibility of implementing the system in the future but don’t currently have a date set to roll it out...

According to Navy Federal VP of credit cards Randy Hopper, the bank was “very excited” to see what Apple had developed, because it is “convenient...

GT seeks to close sapphire plant and sever ties with...

Ars Technica:

On Monday, GT filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. And today, GT said in separate filings with the US Bankruptcy Court in New Hampshire that it wants to terminate its contract with Apple and close the Arizona facility.

The filing to end the contract with Apple states that the terms of GT’s contract with Apple are “oppressive and burdensome,” and the separate filing requesting to shutter the sapphire plant claims that doing so is the only way to rescue GT’s business.

Anyone have any doubt that we haven’t heard all the details of this story and yet and that it’s going to get a lot uglier before its resolved?

How To Create a Mac Keyboard Shortcut For Print To...

You may have seen the "PDFâ" button lurking in the bottom of a print dialog, and you may have even used it from time to time to create a digital version of a document in a quest to reduce paper. If you haven't noticed it, there's a PDF button in the bottom left corner of the print dialog, so you can print something to PDF instead of having to use ink and paper. Sometimes you just need a PDF, so having this option built in is awesome. What's even more awesome is when you can save some time by creating a keyboard shortcut to do this for you automatically. David Sparks has covered this with the video below. It sounds odd, but trust me, this is the "microwave" of Mac tweaks. At first you'll wonder why you thought you needed it, and in a month you'll wonder how you lived without it. For bonus points, work a little dark magic with Hazel or other automation software and streamline a bunch of busy work so you can spend more time on important things, like your Netflix queue or learning to...

GT to close sapphire plant and sever ties with Apple

The iPhone 6 Plus is coated with glass, not sapphire.

Lee Hutchninson

Let's go over the GT Advanced Technologies timeline. In late 2013, the company inked a deal with Apple to provide sapphire glass for iPhones and other gadgets—Apple would loan GT the money to build a sapphire manufacturing facility in Arizona, and in exchange, GT would sell that sapphire primarily to Apple. Rumor had it that the then-forthcoming iPhone 6 would use sapphire or sapphire-coated glass to protect their displays from scratches, and it sent GT's stock climbing. On September 9, Apple announced new iPhones with "ion-strengthened glass," not sapphire. This sent GT's stock sliding downward. On Monday, GT filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. And today, GT said in separate filings with the US Bankruptcy Court in New Hampshire that it wants to terminate its contract with Apple and...

Apple begins rollout of redesigned iTunes Store...

Apple has started rolling out a redesigned version of the iTunes Store for users running iTunes 12 less than a week ahead of what’s expected to be the launch of OS X Yosemite. The new storefront takes design cues from the iTunes and App Store home pages on iOS devices, featuring a flattened, side-scrolling carousel at the top of the page in place of the old “card”-style header. This new header can be scrolled horizontally using two fingers or even dragged around with a mouse.

Individual pages for albums, TV shows, and iOS apps have also been redesigned and now feature more iOS-like controls throughout. Download buttons have been reduced to simple outlines. Shadows and textures have been removed throughout the store, putting the content directly on a stark white or dark gray...

Apple and Google spark civil rights debate

TidBITS:

I fully understand the drive and motivations the law enforcement community has to maintain access to our devices.

But law enforcement needs to understand that technology companies aren’t trying to protect the bad guys, but stop them. That until iOS 8, I had to walk my clients through the iOS security loopholes that made it difficult to protect corporate and personal data. That such back doors are already used to suppress free speech throughout the world, sometimes fatally. That without this encryption, we are all less secure.

As always, I like reading Rich Mogull’s take on these kinds of security issues.

Amazon must be stopped

New Republic:

In confronting what to do about Amazon, first we have to realize our own complicity. We’ve all been seduced by the deep discounts, the monthly automatic diaper delivery, the free Prime movies, the gift wrapping, the free two-day shipping, the ability to buy shoes or books or pinto beans or a toilet all from the same place. But it has gone beyond seduction, really. We expect these kinds of conveniences now, as if they were birthrights. They’ve become baked into our ideas about how consumers should be treated.

These expectations help fuel our collective denial about Amazon.

I don’t know that I agree with the central premise but the consolidation in Amazon is something to be concerned about and keep an eye on.

Jony Ive talks about what he learned from Steve Jobs

Jony Ive sat down with Graydon Carter at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit on Thursday to talk about Apple’s design team, his feelings about copycats, what it was like to work on the Apple Watch and the iPhone, and what he learned from Steve Jobs.

Vanity Fair posted one video from his talk, embedded below, in which Ive mentions specifically what Steve Jobs taught him about the power of focus, and the sacrifices it requires: “What focus means is saying no to something that you, with every bone in your body, you think is a phenomenal idea, and you wake up thinking about it, but you say no to it because you’re focusing on something else.”

More than 81 million people listened to at least one song from the album on iTunes, iTunes Radio, or Beats Music.

By comparison, Cue said 14 million people had previously purchased U2’s music since the iTunes Store launched 11 years ago.

GT Advanced Technologies Wants to Close Apple...

GT Advanced Technologies filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week and now is asking the court for permission to shut down the factory where it has been making synthetic sapphire glass for Apple. The company's bankruptcy filing came as a surprise to everyone, including Apple, and its latest request likely isn't sitting well with the iPhone and iPad maker.

The Mac Observer Spin: Watching GTAT's implosion just hurts, and at this point it's hard to imagine the situation improving. Shutting down its sapphire factory doesn't bode well for Apple, either, because the Apple Watch launch is getting closer all the time.

Bose headphones and audio products could soon get the boot from Apple retail stores, according to a report from MacRumors citing “a reliable source.”

While Apple’s acquisition of Beats would seem like the obvious reason behind replacing the many Bose headphones and speakers currently used with iOS and Mac demo units, the report also claims that Apple will be removing Bose products from store shelves in addition to the demo units.

The reason for the decision is unclear, but Apple did just have a recent run-ins with the company through lawsuits against Beats Electronics. In July news surfaced that...
