WhatsApp Now Has a Desktop App, Available on Windows...

WhatsApp is now also available as a native desktop app on Windows and OS X, the Facebook-owned instant messaging and voice calling company announced. The app supports desktop notifications, keyboard shortcuts and a range of other features. For the desktop app to function, users still need to have their phone connected to the Internet. WhatsApp isn't very popular in the United States and European countries, but it has a large user base of active users in the emerging markets such as India and Brazil. In fact, earlier this year, the company announced that it has hit one billion monthly active users. For those interested, you can download the app for your desktop (or any other device) from the company's website.

How-To: Automatically show the desktop bar by using...

When you invoke Mission Control on OS X El Capitan using the typical gesture on your Mac’s trackpad or via a keyboard shortcut, you’ve probably noticed that the desktop bar at the top of the interface appears minimized. Although this yields additional real estate for the app windows below the desktop bar, it means that you no longer get to see the handy thumbnails that represent each desktop without moving your mouse to the desktop bar area.

There are some workarounds to defeating this OS X El Capitan change, including an open source utility called Force Full Desktop Bar. But for those of you who don’t wish to go through the trouble of installing a separate utility, which also requires you to disable El Capitan’s System Integrity Protection, try this handy Hot Corner shortcut instead....

Feature Request: App-by-app toggling of mobile data...

I once teased an American friend about the fact that only 36% of Americans hold a passport, compared to 83% of Brits. He quite rightly pointed out that in America you can fly for six hours and still be in the same country – Seattle to Miami, for example – while Brits can fly for an hour or so and be in any one of a dozen different countries. (I later did a bit of Googling and found he could even have said 11 hours: New York to Honolulu.)

For that reason, this feature request may be most relevant to Europeans and frequent business travellers, but I think it’s one that would at least fall into the nice-to-have category for anyone who travels.

The issue is mobile roaming charges. Use your iPhone in your own country and all-you-can-eat calls and texts are typically pretty affordable, with data being the main thing that determines how much you pay for your plan. But however much you pay for data at home, that’s nothing compared to roaming charges overseas …

Future Macs could sport — theoretically, at least —...

How would you like a Mac with scent technology? I don’t actually expect it to happen, but some companies have looked into aromatherapy and connected media to interlace viewing experiences with interactive scent products.

Imagine a Mac with a scent generator that can release everything from popcorn smells if you're watching a video. Or beach scents to accompany the sound of water or music.

The goal of digital scent technology is to change the interactive entertainment experience. The idea is to scent-enable movies, games, music, animation, or any digital media.

The idea of technology that tickles your olfactory senses isn't new. In the 1950s, Smell-O-Vision was a system that released an odor during the projection of a film in a movie theater so that the viewer could "smell" what was happening in the movie. Created by Hans Laube, the technology made its only...

Secure your written works with SecureWords for Mac...

By Aaron Lee

You secure/encrypt your emails, our chats, and journals (or at least you should). If you need a secure word processing app for your articles and thoughts, SecureWords for Mac OS X is worth a look.

It's a tool that automatically encrypts and decrypts text documents so you can, for instance, store them on iCloud or in Dropbox without having to worry about prying eyes seeing them. SecureWords is a lean tool that can handle RTF, OpenOffice, and Word documents.

You use it like you would any word processor. However, the items you pen will sport built-in password protection and 256-bit encryption. You can also export your SecureWords documents into a format such as Word or Markdown.

Every document is automatically password protected and encrypted; without exception. However, its filename and its metadata are saved in "cleartext." Cleartext is transmitted or stored text...

WhatsApp expands to the desktop with Windows and Mac...

WhatsApp is taking its popular messaging service to the desktop with a new Mac and Windows app released Tuesday

It’s a pretty straightforward app: the millions of WhatsApp users can now continue conversations from their phone on a computer, and vice versa. That’s a boon for people who want to chat with friends on WhatsApp without having to use their phones.

The move should help WhatsApp better compete with other messaging services like Line, WeChat and Telegram, which already have desktop applications available for at least one platform.

In order to set the app up, users have to scan a QR code inside the application with the Android or iPhone versions of WhatsApp, which will then allow them to log into the application and use it.

MBLM’s one-year study: the Apple Watch polarizes...

MBLM, a “brand intimacy agency focused on strategy, design, creative and technology,” says its one-year study shows that the Apple Watch is polarizing users.

“Our research with the Apple Watch has resulted in rich, often contradictory data, with users ranging from fanatics to naysayers, with many confounded in the middle,” stated Mario Natarelli, MBLM’s managing partner. “Unfortunately, the Apple Watch does not measure up for most people. For the device, which Apple claimed to be its most intimate, to be successful, we believe Apple needs to reach deeper and form stronger bonds with its users.”

Dependence on an iPhone was one of the biggest gripes MBLM heard consistently from the panel. Users say the watch’s dependence on the phone is frustrating and ultimately limits how they use their watch. Additionally, with the phone nearby and behaviors more ingrained, they are more likely to default to using it versus the...

The app spots similar files in addition to identical duplicates: “similiars" aren’t100% identical files, like duplicates, but they have so little difference that a user might consider some of them redundant.

The app tells the differences between files by more than 10 parameters; it analyzes file names, creation and modification dates, extensions, locations to ensure accuracy and precision in results.

Apple Pay rolled out in Canada last November, but its existence was so limited that it was barely useful. Only AmEx cards were supported at launch, leaving out most Canadian iPhone users. That changed Tuesday with the addition of two major Canadian banks, with more coming soon.

Apple’s mobile payment system now supports MasterCard, Visa, and AmEx cards from Royal Bank and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, in addition to those banks’ Interac debit cards, with Bank of Montreal, Toronto-Dominion Bank, and Bank of Novia Scotia planning to integrate with Apple Pay soon. Interac is also planning to bring Scotiabank and TD Bank debit cards on board. Interac handles debit card transactions for banks, so without its cooperation, Apple Pay would’ve been restricted to just credit cards.

As someone who recently bought—and was quickly enchanted by—Amazon’s Echo connected speaker, I’ve been thinking of ways to get its Alexa virtual assistant into more rooms of the house.

Of course, I could just buy another Echo speaker, or some other Alexa-infused device such as the Echo Dot, Amazon Tap, or Invoxia’s Triby. But what if I could just use my smartphone to access Alexa instead? Or better yet, what if I could repurpose an old smartphone to act like an Echo full-time?

Facebook denies hiding conservative news posts

Facebook says it isn't anti-conservative when it comes to highlighting stories in its Trending Topics section. The world’s most popular social network’s comments were in response to a Gizmodo story that said Facebook’s human curators were often encouraged to suppress news stories and sources important to conservatives. This happened even when the story or outlet was trending—being shared a lot—among Facebook’s users, according to Gizmodo's story.

But Facebook says it’s all untrue. “We take these reports extremely seriously, and have found no evidence that the anonymous allegations are true,” Tom Stocky, Facebook’s vice president of search, said in a statement on the social network.

Apple Pay adds two of the five major Canadian banks...

In Canadian news that doesn’t focus on a horrible, raging wildfire, Apple Pay has gone through for Interact debit and major credit cards issued by Royal Bank of Canada and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce. Until today, customers of these banks had to use a non-bank-issued American Express card, bringing two of the five major banks under the Apple Pay flag.

ATB Financial and Canadian Tire Financial Services also go live today. Apple Pay VP Jennifer Bailey confirmed that all of the Big Five will be included and offered the following statement:

“We are thrilled that seven of Canada’s leading banks, including […] every one of the Big Five are bringing Apple Pay to their customers.”

Both CIBC and RBC support all major debit...

External Link: The Importance of App Store Search

The search feature of Apple's App Store was returning incorrect results for just a few hours during the morning of 5 May 2016, but the impact was enormous. According to app analytics firm Tune, 65 percent of all apps saw their downloads drop by more than 10 percent, and 15 percent of apps lost more than half of their regular downloads. These numbers give a sense of how significant the App Store business is, since some top-tier apps might have lost nearly 2500 new customers during those few hours. The glitch affected only search results, not the Top Charts or Featured placements, showing the importance of search for finding apps. If Apple improved discoverability in the App Store, users might not have to rely so much on search and might be more likely to discover lesser known apps.

MacPaw’s Gemini 2 intelligently finds duplicates to...

One of the most frustrating parts about keeping a large photo collection (75,000 and growing), is that I often end up with duplicates over years of maintenance. I’ve spent my fair share cleaning and sorting my library, but it always seems like an album sneaks in with duplicate photos. I’ve been an active user of MacPaw’s Gemini software since its inception, and Gemini 2’s release today has made me fall in love with it all over again. In just the initial scan, Gemini 2 found more files and more places where I could intelligently clear and save space on my Mac.

Apple opens up iTunes-based donations to help...

If you’re looking to help out with the Canadian fire effort, you can now do it through iTunes.

Customers shopping on Apple’s Canadian iTunes storefront can now donate to relief for victims of the forest fires in Fort McMurray, Alberta, which have burned for several days and forced the evacuation of over 100,000 people, destroying 20 percent of the homes in the area.

Apple is currently accepting donations for the Canadian Red Cross in $5, $10, $25, $50, $100 and $200 increments. The company is also promising to give 100% of all donations without taking a cut.

Forests around Fort McMurray — the heart of the Canadian oil sands industry — have been on fire since the beginning of the month, in one of the largest such disasters in the country’s...

How-To: Group Mission Control windows by application...

Mission Control is a tool that I use every day on my Mac to quickly locate open app windows. In my opinion, though, finding a specific window in the Mission Control view can be a challenge if you have many app windows open at once.

The good news is that it’s easy to group like applications while using Mission Control. More importantly, enabling grouping places the relevant app icon near groups and single windows. Having an app icon displayed makes it even easier to identify a particular app window while using Mission Control. more…

Opinion: Viv is exactly what Siri should have been...

As long-time readers will know, I’ve long been a fan of Siri. As I’ve often noted, it’s my primary means of interacting with my iPhone (part of the reason I don’t need a larger screen). I dictate most of my messages, and if it’s possible to ask Siri to do something for me rather than doing it myself, I do.

But Siri does have one major failing: it has no access to third-party apps. There are countless apps where I’d love to be able to get Siri to do the heavy lifting, as I wrote last year in a Feature Request:

What I can’t yet do is ask the time of my next train home, despite having an app on my phone that can answer that question. I can’t ask it to show me today’s...

Sales Of PCs, Laptops, Tablets Continue to Fall, Hit...

According to the latest numbers provided by marketing research firm Canalys, the shipments of PC devices -- which includes desktops, notebooks, all-in-ones, two-in-ones, and tablets -- amounted to 101 million units in the first quarter of 2016. The number underscores a 13% decline from the same period a year ago, and it is also the lowest volume since the second quarter of 2011. Apple led the chart among PC OEMs, moving 14 million units (suffering 17% fall), followed by Chinese conglomerate Lenovo. HP assumed the third position, with Dell and Samsung closely following it. Tim Coulling, Canalys Senior Analyst said in a press statement: The global PC market had a bad start to 2016 and it is difficult to see any bright spots for vendors in the coming quarters. The tablet boom has faded in the distance and the market is fully mature. Global shipments declines are expected to continue unless vendors bring transformational innovation to the market. Apple and Microsoft are propping up...

Amazon's new YouTube rival shoves cash at video...

Amazon has launched a full-scale attack on YouTube with its new Video Direct program for content creators.

Video Direct is aimed at both large media brands and individual creators, and offers several ways for them to make money beyond just advertising.

For example, creators can distribute ad-free videos to Amazon Prime subscribers and earn revenue based on hours streamed. They can also offer add-on subscriptions for Prime subscribers (just as streaming services such as Starz and Showtime do already.) Standalone rental and purchase options are available as well through Amazon Video, along with a basic ad-supported model.

Patent report: a smarter Smart Cover, Lazer Tag with...

Apple files for — and is granted — lots of patents by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Many are for inventions that never see the light of day. However, you never can tell which ones will materialize in a real product, so here are today’s patent highlights:

Apple is working on a smarter Smart Cover for the iPad, it seems. The company has been granted a patent (number 9,335,793) for a “cover attachment with flexible display.” In other words, the cover would serve as additional display space for the tablet.

According to the invention, a thin flexible display technology can be integrated into the flexible cover without affecting the overall form factor of the cover or tablet device. Adding the integrated display to the flexible cover greatly enhances the overall functionality of the tablet device, Apple says.

What sort of functionality? It could show info on videos you’re watching on the iPad, show notifications, serve as a...

External Link: Amazon to Compete with YouTube

Amazon has launched Amazon Video Direct (AVD), which will allow anyone to offer videos on Amazon’s Prime Video platform, putting Amazon in direct competition with YouTube. AVD content creators can make their videos available to rent or own, only for Prime Video subscribers, or for free with ads. Amazon is also launching the AVD Stars program, which will distribute $1 million per month among the top 100 AVD titles in Prime Video. Amazon has already amassed some major partners for AVD, including Conde Nast Entertainment, Business Insider, The Guardian, HowStuffWorks, Mashable, Mattel, and Samuel Goldwyn Films. As much Amazon Video Direct is clearly targeting Google’s YouTube, the added AVD content may help make Amazon’s Prime Video more compelling than Apple’s iTunes video library.

TrendForce: Apple sees 40% quarterly decline in Mac...

Worldwide notebook shipments in the first quarter of 2016 arrived at 35.62 million units, according to TrendForce. What’s more, the global market research firm says Apple saw a 40% quarterly decline in Mac laptop sales.

“In the first quarter, Apple did not have any new MacBook products ready for the market, nor did it lower MacBook prices to generate sales. Apple’s Wintel-based competitors, on the other hand, benefitted from Windows 10 and the steady supply of Intel’s Skylake CPUs,” says TrendForce notebook analyst Anita Wang. “They were able to have numerous new products ready to promote and ship. As a result, MacBook shipments suffered a massive quarterly decline of 40.4% in the first quarter and Apple retreated to the sixth place in the ranking.”

Of course, the first quarter is the traditional off season for the notebook market and retailers still needed time to clear out their existing inventories. Total shipments fell 19%...

Apple granted patent for even smarter iPad cover,...

Apple has today been granted a patent for an iPad Smart Cover with more smarts than usual: it incorporates a built-in display, and even a Wacom-style drawing tablet.

The patent illustrates a number of different ways the Smart Cover display could be used, from simply extending the iPad’s own display through text-only displays of things like reminders to a combined display and touchpad. Some of the options show the display acting as a full input device too, allowing both handwritten notes and drawings.

While we of course add our usual disclaimer that Apple patents way more things than it actually makes, two element of this patent have actually made it into production …

Voip-Pal.com has announced that they’ve completed legal service on Apple, Verizon, and AT&T in the company’s combined $7 billion patent infringement lawsuits filed in February 2016 in the United States District Court, District of Nevada.

Voip-Pal CEO Emil Malak says the company initially delayed service of the actions pending discussions with the defendants regarding an “amicable resolution.” Over the past several weeks discussions have been initiated between the defendants and Voip-Pal’s advisor and mediator, Ray Leon. Malak says Leon has either personally met with or spoken via teleconference with representatives of each of the defendants.

Voip-Pal is a publicly traded corporation that acquired Digifonica International Limited in 2013 in order to fund, co-develop and complete Digifonica's suite of patents. Digifonica purportedly operationalized and tested its suite of software solutions with applications in five core areas of Internet connectivity: Routing,...

The inexpensive Sprng clip will hold those Apple...

There are higher quality earphones and earbuds you can buy for use with your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. However, Apple's own EarPods are ubiquitous as they come with every iDevice.

The problem with EarPods is keeping 'em in your ear. After extended use, even if you're relatively still, they tend to slowly wiggle out. However, when you're running, hiking, biking, walking, etc., they pop out quicker and more often.

A simple solution is the inexpensive Sprng clips (yes, that's spelled correctly). You simply snap the Sprng onto your Apple EarPods, then slide the clip up or for a "custom" fit. Voila! Your earbuds stay comfortably in place. (Note that your your ears may not be exactly the same so each side may need to be adjusted slightly differently.)

The Sprng clip is available in pink and grey. They work with the EarPods that came with the iPhone 5/5c/5s, iPod nano (seventh generation), and iPod touch (fifth...

How to get rid of vitiligo

Forums: General FCS Discussion

Vitiligo treatment

White spots on the skin called as Vitiligo. This probably appears on most nominated parts of body including the feet, arms, hands, face, legs, lips, and circle the eyes and mouth. White patches or spots on skin can also be produce by exterior fungal infections like psoriasis, eczema, tinea versicolor, or further skin conditions. Since Vitiligo disease affect a person's personality, Vitiligo can be upsetting. However, Vitiligo isn't medically risky because it’s not a type of skin cancer and it’s also not a disease such as MRSA. And it's surely not transmittable, so you can't catch it from somebody else.
