This Mujjo for the iPhone 7 Plus is a great case,...

The Mujjo Leather Case for iPhone 7 Plus, approximately $40, is a “wallet case” for the iPhone. It’s a gorgeous case, but not a very practical wallet, at least for me.

First, let’s examine at its strengths. Made out of high-quality, vegetable tanned leather, it looks great out of the box, and should acquire a striking patina over time as constant use helps break it in. The Leather Case is equipped with Mujjo’s Moulded Edge Technology, a polycarbonate solution that toughens the edges of the case and helps it to withstand the wear and tear caused by friction against jeans pockets.

Whether you can comfortable place an iPhone 7 Plus in your pockets is another matter. It fits okay in the lower pockets of my cargo pants, but is simply too big to fit comfortable in my blue jeans pockets.

As you’d expect, the openings of the Mujjo Leather Case expose the volume rockers and...

iPhone 7 and holiday spending driving up holiday...

Indexes from Fiksu DSP, the data-fueled mobile marketing technology company, reveal that mobile ad costs are on the rise, a result potentially due to iPhone 7 adoption, as well as early holiday ad spend. Fiksu’s indexes track year-over-year and monthly metrics, measuring cost per thousand impressions (CPM) and cost per purchaser (CPP) across mobile RTB advertising.

The data also shows that as advertisers see sustained returns and recognize the opportunity to find high quality users on the maturing Android platform, the marketplace is becoming flooded with competition, especially as the holiday season approaches.

“Seasonal competition is evident in this data, but the numbers indicate that these trends may be sustained over the long run,” says Tom Cummings, vice president, new market strategy at Fiksu DSP. “It’s growing increasingly evident that Android represents a great opportunity to find users who are more likely...

Apple will start blocking those iCloud Calendar spam...

Those annoying Calendar spam invites won’t be around much longer.

On Wednesday, Apple indicated that it was actively working to identify and block any further spam invites from hitting your iCloud Calendar. Last week, people started receiving suspicious spam invites on iOS and macOS alerting them of special sales for Ugg boots or Ray-Ban sunglasses.

The spammers were able to exploit an iCloud feature that uses email data to pop-up as Calendar notifications. If the spam invites were set as recurring events, the notifications would surface every day.

Address the issue, Apple sent the following statement to iMore:

Some Apple users have been plagued with iCloud calendar invite spam in recent weeks, with calendar periods being blocked up with unsolicited events from anonymous senders (usually with Chinese names). Apple has now acknowledged the issue in a statement to iMore, starting with an apology to anyone who has received iCloud calendar spam. The company says it is actively “identifying and blocking suspicious senders” to try and stem the arrival of the junk messages.

The Apple Daily Report for Nov. 30, 2016

The AWT News Update is on hiatus while my compadre, Steve, takes a road trip. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Apple has updated its website where customers can send in an old device for recycling to include the Apple Watch. That means that customers can now send their old Apple Watch to be responsibly recycled through the company’s Apple Renew program free of charge, but it’s not offering customers a gift card or any credit in exchange like it does with iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Review: Twelve South HiRise Duet for Apple Watch and...

Twelve South's HiRise Duet ($120) is a new dock that can charge an Apple Watch and iPhone simultaneously. As you'd expect from Twelve South, HiRise Duet is made of high-end materials — its metal construction is accentuated by leather, and a rubber base prevents the stand and dock from scuffing up a surface. A magnetic Apple Watch charging disc is built right into the front of the stand, allowing an Apple Watch to charge while in Nightstand mode. The Lightning connector above can be adjusted to fit different iPhone cases, and HiRise Duet will even dock and charge an iPad, excluding the supersized 12.9" iPad Pro. Twelve South's dock comes with its own AC adapter — users don't have to provide any of their own cables.

At a meeting with shareholders Wednesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was asked numerous times what the company is doing about Windows Phones, and why do they keep hearing that Microsoft is abandoning smartphone manufacturer business. The stakeholders also asked why the company is seemingly focusing more on Android and iOS rival platforms instead of its own. From a report on GeekWire: Microsoft shareholder Dana Vance, owner of a Windows Phone and a Microsoft Band, said he received an email about the Microsoft Pix app but was surprised to learn that it was available for iPhone and Android but not Windows Phone. Ditto for Microsoft Outlook. He also alluded to reports that Microsoft has put the Band on the back burner. Given this, he asked Nadella to explain the company's vision for its consumer devices. As part of his response, Nadella said Microsoft's Windows camera and mail apps will include the same features as in Microsoft's apps for other platforms. "When we control things...

Having got my maxed-out 15-inch 2016 MacBook Pro set up yesterday, I’ve now been using it for a total of around 12 hours – so I’m calling this one my first real-life usage impressions.

Impressions of the form factor will obviously vary depending on whether you’re coming from a pre-Retina machine – as I was – or a later one. The new machine is smaller, slimmer and sleeker either way, but the difference is of course much more dramatic from a pre-2012 model. And in my case, I’m also moving from a 17-inch machine to a 15-inch one.

For me, then, the form factor is in a completely different league. The base unit is much thinner, and the lid is almost unbelievably so. It’s also significantly lighter. I said...

IDC: global personal computer market forecast...

Worldwide personal computer (PC) shipments are forecast to decline by 6.4% year over year in 2016, according to an updated forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Tracker. That doesn’t sound good, but it’s an improvement over August's projection for a decline of 7.2% in 2016.

While IDC's outlook for 2017 remains at -2.1% year-over-year growth, the absolute volumes are slightly higher based on stronger 2016 shipments. The third quarter of 2016 (3Q16) saw a year-over-year decline in shipments of 4.6%, more than 2 percentage points ahead of expectations.

Although factors such as the transition to Windows 10 played a role, the 3Q16 gains came largely as a result of stronger momentum in the U.S., Western Europe, and Japan, and were driven by channel build up in anticipation of component shortages in areas such as display panels...

Apple again turns (RED) to assist in the fight...

In honor of World AIDS Day, Apple is offering more ways for customers to join (RED) in its mission to create an AIDS-free generation. This is the company’s 10th year supporting the effort.

(RED)’s work addresses the disparity in access to life-saving medication in sub-Saharan Africa, which has the highest prevalence of AIDS on the planet. The money raised by (RED) funds programs that offer counseling, testing, prevention and, most crucially, the life-saving ARV medication that prevents the transmission of HIV from mothers to their unborn babies.

“The gift of life is the most important gift that anyone can give,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a press release. “Thanks to the vision and dedication of (RED), an AIDS-free generation is within our reach. We want to leave the world better than we found it, and that’s why our longtime partnership with (RED) remains so important to us.”

This year, Apple customers can support the fight while playing the games they love,...

Rumor: Apple to see its best iPhone sales in 2017,...

A new report from analytical firm KGI has Apple as having its biggest iPhone sales ever come 2017. The new estimates, which cover three anticipated new models, will empower Apple growth with ‘unprecedented’ demand. KGI expects the new phones may sell between 120-150 million units in the second half of next year, eclipsing the previous sales record set by iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

The firm believes that the new form-factor premium OLED iPhone model will encourage high-end customers to upgrades their devices while the low-end 4.7-inch model will feature wireless charging, a glass chassis and attract the lower-end of the market.

KGI reiterates what the firm has said before, in that Apple will debut three new...

Apple extending iMac repair program to help cover...

If your 27-inch iMac hinge has been wonky, Apple is stepping in to cover it in some cases.

A new report has stated that ome 27-inch iMacs shipped between Dec. 2012 and July 2014 may stop adjusting properly and simply tilt forward,. People who paid to get their hinge fixed may have ended up spending $100 or more.

The affected hinges have apparently made cracking or popping sounds upon breaking. That would support a theory that plastic washers in spring mechanisms are suddenly giving way, unable to cope with the weight of the attached computer.

A repair program that covers the 2012 and 2013 model iMacs has been extended from three to five years from the original date of purchase. Users with a faulty iMac should be able to get their hinge...

The Week in iOS Accessories: Kings of crowdfunding

New accessories of the week

This week’s roundup includes some cool new accessories that got their start on Kickstarter. Read on!

Accessport

The Accessport ($19 pledge on Kickstarter) is a “hi-res audio amplifier” for the iPhone 7—an audio accessory for the post-headphone-jack age. It takes the 24-bit audio signal from the phone, decodes it through a digital-to-analog converter, then amplifies and delivers the resulting high-resolution audio to your headphones. The product has already doubled its production goal on Kickstarter; delivery is scheduled for March.

UBS analyst who questioned Cook on strategy...

In the earnings call following Apple’s Q4 2016 financial results, UBS managing director Steven Milunovich asked CEO Tim Cook a rather pointed question: ‘Does Apple has a grand strategy for what it wants to do over next 3-5 years? Or does it react to the market then decide?’

Cook was widely felt to be uncomfortable with the question, and Milunovich has now explained why he asked it, and how well prepared he thinks Apple is for the future …

Through a single USB-C connection, it lets you connect monitors, a full-sized keyboard and mouse, external hard drives, printers, webcams, and more. Easy to set up, the all-in-one dock serves up a total of 10 ports.

What sort of ports? USB 3.0, HDMI, audio, microphone/speaker, Ethernet and more. The IOGEAR product works flawlessly and its well designed. A USB 3.0 fast-charging port is located on the front, which means you can charge an iPhone or iPad while working with your laptop.

IOGEAR says you can connect additional displays with HDMI and DisplayPort Multi-Stream Transport in single, mirror, or extend mode. However, though the...

Why a web browser is the wrong place to save your...

By Jeff Graber

For the average Internet user, security of passwords is often a secondary consideration, right after convenience. Most of us belong to so many different websites requiring passwords that we could never name them all, even if a gun were placed to our heads.

Clicking that little “yes” button when our web browsers automatically ask us if we want to save our password is almost an automatic reflex reaction for some of us. But this practice is actually the worst possible method for keeping your passwords safe. Using a password management system provides infinitely more protection.

Who else has access to your computer?

All that it takes to gain access to all of your passwords is a few seconds in front of your desktop or laptop computer. If you’re in the office and walk away for a quick meeting with the boss, a colleague in the next cubicle can simply slip into our seat and access all of your secret information,...
