Revealed: The MacBook Pro 2016's soldered-on...

There’s some help for the MacBook Pro’s non-removable, non-upgradable, soldered-on SSD. According to a report from 9to5Mac, Apple has a tool for pulling data off the drive in case of emergency.

The 2016 MacBook Pro is even harder to repair than its predecessor. An iFixIt teardown revealed that the SSD is soldered onto the laptop’s logic board, along with the RAM and the CPU. Even the battery is glued on.

Apple Releases macOS 10.12 Sierra Open Source Darwin...

An anonymous reader writes:Apple has released the open source Darwin code for macOS 10.12 Sierra. The code, located on Apple's open source website, can be accessed via direct link now, although it doesn't yet appear on the site's home page. The release builds on a long-standing library of open source code that dates all the way back to OS X 10.0. There, you'll also find the Open Source Reference Library, developer tools, along with iOS and OS X Server resources. The lowest layers of macOS, including the kernel, BSD portions, and drivers are based mainly on open source technologies, collectively called Darwin. As such, Apple provides download links to the latest versions of these technologies for the open source community to learn and to use.

AAPL no longer disclosing ad costs, may want to hide...

A Wells Fargo analyst has noted that Apple has ceased to disclose its advertising spend in its latest 10-K annual report, instead bundling it into a more general category of ‘selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses.’ Apple has in the past always specifically disclosed its ad spend, notes Business Insider.

Apple last year increased its ad spend by a massive 50% to a record $1.8B. While the 10-K suggests that this year’s spend is lower by one measure, Wells Fargo suggests that might not be telling the whole story …

This is Apple’s special tool to help customers...

When the first teardown of Apple’s new 2016 MacBook Pro was published earlier this month, a couple notable changes were spotted related to the machine’s SSD. Components for the SSD are now soldered onto the logic board, which likely allows for some design and thinness enhancements, but hurts overall repairability. On top of not being upgradeable, some speculated that meant that if the logic board fails, your data is gone with it. Not necessarily…

Also present is a new mystery connector on the logic board that repair guide site iFixit noted in its teardown wasn’t connected to anything. It turns out that the mystery connector is actually there BECAUSE of the soldered down SSD, giving Apple a way to access data on a dead MacBook...

A Lot To Be Thankful For...

Today is Thanksgiving Day in the United States. While the modern interpretation of this day is to stuff one's face with food, watch football on TV in a food-induced coma, and then go to sleep early in order to be the first one in line at the local "big box" store to get a "thing" at a heavily discounted price, the origins of the holiday have to do with a group of immigrants who were just happy to be alive, have enough food to share with the natives, and who were thankful for simple things.

I'm thankful for a lot. I'm quite healthy, both of my elderly parents are still alive, and my wife is still happily employed at an aerospace company and will be retiring in a few years. I'm blessed to work with a number of absolutely wonderful people, especially the man who is working hard to keep you entertained and informed while I'm on a long vacation -- Dennis Sellers. I thoroughly enjoy the discussions with Dennis and Marty Edwards on our Patron Podcast, and I love being able to see...

Rumor: Apple to incorporate wireless charging...

It’s a rumor, but it’s an interesting one.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has released a report stating that the 2017 iPhone will feature wireless charging for the first time ever. Instead of plugging in a cable, iPhone 8 owners will be able to charge their batteries using an inductive pad similar to how the Apple Watch charges. While many Android phones support wireless charging with plastic and metal chassis, the report says Apple’s switch to a glass casing for iPhone 8 will enable wireless charging at fast speeds with minimum disruption from frequency interference.

The report also stated that Apple may not bundle a wireless charger with every new model and that these may be limited to the more-expensive, higher-capacity units. Apple is though to be...

Apple patent hints at efforts to develop foldable...

An Apple patent published on Tuesday showed the company’s years-long investigation into a hinged iPhone format, the designs calling for a flexible metal-backed OLED display capable of being folded in half.

The patent, numbered 9,504,170 by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and dubbed “Flexible display devices”, describes an iPhone with a foldable full-screen display. Such a device could be folded in half and easily put away.

In order to achieve the flexibility required, the document proposes nitinol, a nickel and titanium alloy known for its elasticity and unique shape memory abilities. Alternative embodiments involve flexible polymers.

Certain examples in the document cite both upper and lower sections, each containing processors, sensors and...

Security Researchers Can Turn Headphones Into...

As if we don't already have enough devices that can listen in on our conversations, security researchers at Israel's Ben Gurion University have created malware that will turn your headphones into microphones that can slyly record your conversations. TechCrunch reports: The proof-of-concept, called "Speake(a)r," first turned headphones connected to a PC into microphones and then tested the quality of sound recorded by a microphone vs. headphones on a target PC. In short, the headphones were nearly as good as an unpowered microphone at picking up audio in a room. It essentially "retasks" the RealTek audio codec chip output found in many desktop computers into an input channel. This means you can plug your headphones into a seemingly output-only jack and hackers can still listen in. This isn't a driver fix, either. The embedded chip does not allow users to properly prevent this hack which means your earbuds or nice cans could start picking up conversations instantly. In fact, even if...

Things for which I'm thankful

Since Thursday, Nov. 24, is Thanksgiving here in the good ol' US of A, Apple World Today will be "closed" that day and we'll run a light schedule on Friday, Nov. 25, as we spend time with our family and friends. Actually, we'll be so sluggish from all that food we ate on Thursday, it's doubtful that we'd have the energy to get much done.

And while I am seriously grateful for all the fine food I'll have when so many in the world have so little, there's so much more I'm thankful for.

I'm thankful for having a job with Apple World Today —  especially one so great I wake up in the morning excited to get to work.

I'm thankful for my wife (Laura), my three great kids (son Matt, daughter Katie, and daughter-in-law Jennifer), my granddaughter Elizabeth, as well as my mom, brothers, sister, nieces, and nephews.

I'm thankful for the blessing of many friends.

I'm thankful for the good health that I sometimes take for granted — health that...

Black Friday deals: The best discounts on Apple gear

Apple products on the cheap are hard to come by, even on mega shopping holidays like Black Friday. But this year, you can score some major deals on lots of different Apple goodies, including the iPhone 7, iPad Pro, Apple Watch, and the new MacBook Pro. (Yes, seriously.) If you’re ok with slightly older stuff, the savings are even better.

If you’re planning on hitting the mall during the wee hours of Friday morning, be sure to double check store hours, and remember—these deals will only last as long as supplies do. Some stores may have started these discounts sooner, so if you need an afternoon break on Turkey Day, you could get a head start online. (Again, double-check with your local stores to see how long these promotions will last.)

The iPad lineup is getting some sort of a shakeup next year, seemingly with the introduction of a new 10.5-inch model. Apple’s existing lineup of form factors comprises a 7.9-inch iPad mini, 9.7-inch iPad Air and iPad Pro, and a 12.9-inch iPad Pro.

The 10.5-inch would apparently slot in between those tiers targeting enterprise, education and other sectors, according to Digitimes. iPad updates are ‘due’ with all models being more than a year old by next March.

Microsoft Solitaire Collection From Windows 10 Now...

BrianFagioli quotes a report from BetaNews: Back in the the mid-1990's, everyone thought they needed a computer. After all, Windows 95 made using one particularly easy, and the internet was a very attractive thing. Unfortunately, once some people got their first-ever PC set up in their homes, they didn't really know what to do with it. In the end, it would turn out that some consumers spent thousands of dollars for a machine dedicated to one thing -- playing Solitaire! Yes, this fun Windows game is responsible for much wasted time, but not just at home -- at businesses too. The card game has historically been viewed as a negative for productivity. Fast forward to 2016 and fewer people are sitting in front of large desktop computers at home -- people are increasingly turning to tablets and smartphones for entertainment. Today, just in time for Thanksgiving, Microsoft Solitaire Collection comes to both Android and iOS. "Microsoft Solitaire continues to be one of the most-played games...

Trump Says He's Going To 'Get Apple To...

In a Tuesday interview with The New York Times, President-elect Donald Trump said that he would incentivize Apple to "build a big plant in the United States, or many big plants in the United States." Ars Technica reports: Trump indicated to columnist Thomas Friedman that he is going to double-down on bringing factory jobs back to America, especially in the Rust Belt from Michigan to Pennsylvania.

FRIEDMAN: Are you worried, though, that those companies will keep their factories here, but the jobs will be replaced by robots?
TRUMP: They will, and we'll make the robots, too. [laughter]
TRUMP: It's a big thing, we'll make the robots, too. Right now we don't make the robots. We don't make anything. But we're going to. I mean, look, robotics is becoming very big and we're going to do that. We're going to have more factories. We can't lose 70,000 factories. Just can't do it. We're going to start making things.

Trump continued, saying that he had received a call...

There are some inherent downsides to consider when using TouchSwitcher, but it’s nonetheless very interesting to see when running on a new MacBook Pro. Have a look at our brief hands-on video to see it in action. more…

Watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade live...

Ah, Thanksgiving traditions. Watching football. Eating too much. And of course, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which this year will be live-streamed in 360 degrees on YouTube.

You’ll be able to see the floats and the giant balloons from immersive street-level views thanks to 360-degree cameras placed at strategic points along the route. While it’s arguably more social to watch the traditional NBC broadcast on a large screen with friends and family, anyone wanting a closer look can check out the 360-degree view on a laptop—or pull on a Google Cardboard headset and pretend the family disappeared for a few minutes.

President-elect Donald Trump told The New York Times in a Tuesday interview that he would incentivize Apple to “build a big plant” in the United States.

During that interview, Trump touched on numerous subjects, changing his tune on several campaign positions. He backed off threats he made during his campaign to prosecute his political rival, Hillary Clinton, over her use of a personal e-mail server while she was Secretary of State...

Pokémon Go’s popularity has significantly declined since its summer release. Most updates have been minor, with Niantic hosting in-game events that let players collect more points. Cyber Grinches Could Disrupt Holidays' Biggest...

Recent high-profile distributed denial of service attacks on the Internet's infrastructure and an investigative journalist's website have spiked concerns over possible disruptions of traffic during the biggest online shopping weekend of the year. Online spending last year exceeded $5.8 billion on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, according to Adobe, and that figure is expected to be even higher this year. "If you want to mess with the economy, that's the most disruptive time to do that," said John Wu, CEO of Gryphon.

Donald Trump tells Tim Cook to build iPhones in the...

On the back of every iPhone, tiny print reminds you it was “Designed by Apple in California. Assembled in China.” One of president-elect Trump’s campaign promises was getting Apple to move production here—and he says he told Tim Cook that very thing directly.

In his meeting Tuesday with the New York Times (a full transcript is available), Trump said he’d spoken to Cook on the phone.

I got a call from Tim Cook at Apple, and I said, ‘Tim, you know one of the things that will be a real achievement for me is when I get Apple to build a big plant in the United States, or many big plants in the United States, where instead of going to China, and going to Vietnam, and going to the places that you go to, you’re making your product right here.’

Apple Captures Record 91 Percent of Global...

Apple has captured a record share of profits in the global smartphone industry in the third quarter, according to new research, despite grappling with falling iPhone sales. From a report on CNBC:Third-quarter smartphone operating profit reached $9 billion globally of which Apple took 91 percent of the share, Strategy Analytics said in a note on Tuesday. This amounts to $8.19 billion for the U.S. technology giant. Apple has the highest profit margins in the smartphone industry thanks to a loyal brand following and the ability to price its iPhones at a premium. And the figures come even after Apple reported three straight quarters of iPhone sales declines. Sat a long way behind Apple is China's Huawei which managed to grab 2.4 percent of global operating profit share in the smartphone market, accounting for $200 million, according to Strategy Analytics. Chinese start-up brands Vivo and OPPO are in third and fourth place, both capturing 2.2 percent of global smartphone profit each....

Review: Kanex GoPower Watch is an ideal travel...

Kanex GoPower Watch is a handy portable battery pack that can charge your Apple Watch on-the-go without extra cables or adapters. That’s because it features an MFi (Apple certified) Apple Watch magnetic charger on the battery pack, which makes it an all-in-one solution. It’s rather pricey for a portable battery pack at $99, but it gets the job done if you want the most convenient way to power your Apple Watch over a weekend away from electricity.
