T-Mobile announces new $100 unlimited 2-line data...

AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon need to watch out. The “uncarrier” has announced yet another couple of reasons they hope will get you to ditch your current cellular provider for T-Mobile. Today, CEO John Legere and his cohorts have come out to announce that T-Mobile is now offering a 2-line family plan that comes with unlimited talk, text, and 4G data, for $100 a month.

Referencing the fact (at least according to T-Mobile) that “75% of people “hate” monitoring their families’ data usage,” the company wants to offer a plan that’s affordable and yet gives customers the freedom not to worry about how quickly they’re eating gigs. The new plan costs a family of 2 $100 per month, but more lines can be added for an additional $40 apiece.

Additionally, the company has  resurrected its $100 per month plan for four lines,...

An Illustrated History of (Mac) OS X

The folks at fournova Software GmbH have published An Illustrated History of Mac OS X. This a wonderful and whimsical collection of images that incapsulates each version of OS X from Mac OS X 10.0 Cheetah to OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Each one incorporates a cat (or other element, in the case of Mavericks and Yosemite) to represent the OS, but each one also includes other reference points that represent the major changes in that version of the OS. Looking at them was an excellent reminder of when things happened, like Safari in Panther and Intel in Tiger. The screen grab below is for Snow Leopard. There's a written description accompanying each image to fill in any gaps. For those keeping score at home, fournova makes Tower, a git client for version control in OS X.

Review: Seek Thermal Camera for iOS gives your...

The evolution of Apple’s iOS cameras has been fairly linear: Apple improved their image quality, added video recording capabilities, and dropped in a small collection of filters, but otherwise hasn’t radically changed their features.

Just in time for the holidays, Seek Thermal Inc.’s new Seek Thermal Camera for iOS ($199) is offering a fundamentally different type of camera for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Using a Lightning connector, the Seek Thermal Camera adds affordable thermal photography and videography features to any late-2012 or newer iOS device – the heat-sensitive sort of vision best-known from the Predator movies. While it’s not case-compatible, this accessory is otherwise the most practical thermal camera currently available for iOS devices. (An...

Apple drops iOS 8.1.2 to bring back vanished...

Check your settings: Apple just released a software update for iOS 8 on Tuesday. iOS 8.1.2 includes general bug fixes and, most importantly, fixes a problem that caused ringtones purchased via iTunes to disappear from your device—which has been a known problem since iOS 8.0.2.

While the update itself won’t bring your ringtones back from the dead, Apple has another way to restore missing purchases: After you install the update, follow Apple’s ringtone restore link (itunes.com/restore-tones) on your device, which will redirect you to iTunes. Follow the on-screen prompts from there.

Let’s go crazy: Inside the making of Purple Rain

The Verge:

In an age where fans expect direct relationships with the artists they love, Prince has turned himself into a reclusive legend. But 30 years ago, he was still a young artist on the cusp of releasing his greatest record — and former Vibe and Spin editor-in-chief Alan Light’s Let’s Go Crazy: Prince and the Making of Purple Rain documents how the record and film came to be.

I’m all kinds of biased as a huge Prince fan but I think the album is still amazing and listen to it at least once a month. The movie doesn’t hold up as well but it’s still a lot of fun to watch every now and then.

iOS 8.1.2 released, will keep your ringtones from...

Apple posted iOS 8.1.2 this afternoon, the second patch for iOS 8.1 and the fifth for iOS 8 overall. The update is available for all devices running iOS 8, including the iPhone 4S, 5, 5C, 5S, 6, and 6 Plus; all iPads except the first-generation model; and the fifth-generation iPod Touch. Download the update over-the-air or through iTunes—the latter is the better option if your device doesn't have enough free space to install the update.

This one looks pretty minor—the only listed bug fix is for an issue that could cause ringtones purchased through iTunes to disappear from your device. They won't do that anymore, and visiting a "Restore Tones" page on your phone should restore them if you've been affected by the problem. Any other bugs that have been patched are apparently too minor to mention.

Apple is already...

I first heard of this tradition many years ago when asking around about other cultures and other countries traditions. A Dutch-born listener to my podcast told me about “Zwarte Piet”. Of course, I didn’t believe them. There’s no way the people of the Netherlands, who Canadians have always had wonderful relations with due to shared history, could be such racists.

Apple prepares Japanese R&D center, Brooklyn...

Apple is in the process of establishing a research and development facility in Japan, according to the country's Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe. The disclosure was made in a campaign speech ahead of Sunday's general election. Abe didn't offer any more details except to say it should be "formally announced soon," and rank with Apple's largest R&D centers in Asia. The company has been establishing new offices across the world in the past couple of years, growing R&D beyond the confines of its Cupertino headquarters....

Gift guide: Premium headphones & earphones for...

Apple makes great phones, tablets and computers; earphones not so much. The ones that come free with the iPhone look attractive, but they’re pretty much worth what you pay for them when it comes to sound quality.

Great sound, though, doesn’t come cheap, which is why a pair of premium headphones or earphones can make the perfect gift for someone who loves their music but perhaps doesn’t have the budget to really splash out on themselves.

If you’re buying for a musician, check out the more studio-oriented recommendations in our music gift guide. For those who will mostly use their headphones while on the move, read on …

One of the most visible trends of the past few years has been the growth of popularity of headphones, rather than...

Why Ashton Kutcher May be the Only Steve Jobs We Get

Aaron Sorkin's biopic about Apple co-founder and former CEO Steve Jobs lost out on Christian Bale, then Leonardo DiCaprio, and now Natalie Portman. It also lost its studio backing, and if the project keeps on its current path, the only big screen Steve Jobs we'll get comes from critically panned "Jobs" starring Ashton Kutcher.

Apple TV adds revamped YouTube app (with ads), new...

Apple TV is receiving a flurry of new channels today. Most prominently is a brand new YouTube app, to bring the client up-to-date with some of the other platforms. The new app reflects the design of other set-top box clients, with easier access to subscriptions and search functions. Unfortunately, this YouTube update also means that Apple TV users will start seeing ads for the first time on the platform. Naturally, some users will be disappointed by this addition — it is not possible to opt out of the update.

Aside from YouTube, Apple TV is also getting four new channels added to its channel offerings. Rolling today are channels for Conde Nast’s ‘The Scene’, ‘Fusion’, Dailymotion (a YouTube clone from France) and UFC for premium subscription fighting and martial arts content.

Apple, Amazon refuse to disclose federal diversity...

Apple and Amazon are two noteworthy holdouts among major technology companies refusing to share their EEO-1 diversity data with the media, says USA Today. US businesses submit an annual EEO-1 form to the federal government, detailing the racial, ethnic, and gender lines of their workforces. While resistance to sharing that data has been common for years, in recent months, more and more companies have been bowing to pressure. Facebook, eBay, Google, Yahoo, and LinkedIn have made their EEO-1s public; Intel has been disclosing its data for a decade....

Judge in iPod Antitrust Case: Find a New Plaintiff

The years-old antitrust class action lawsuit alleging Apple intentionally locked competitors out of the iPod to control the portable media player market will continue, at least for now. U.S. District Court Judge Yvonne Gonzales ruled the final plaintiff in the case hadn't purchased an iPod during the necessary time frame, then gave attorneys until Tuesday to find new plaintiffs.

The Mac Observer Spin: Considering how much time attorneys had to find solid plaintiffs for their case, you'd think they could've done better than putting someone on the stand with an iPod bought with the legal firm's credit card. They'll most likely find replacement plaintiffs in time for the case to move forward, but you can bet Apple will look at each purchase closely to make sure they're legit.

Bop.fm delivers almost ad-free, a la carte music...

In 2013, Bop.fm quietly launched a Web service that promised “free legit music you can share with anyone.” Now it’s taking that model to the mobile space.

On Tuesday, the company announced the launch of its first iOS app, allowing fans on either the iPhone or the iPad to listen to virtually song they wish, for free.

So how can the company pull this off without licensing fees? For now, through a loophoole with YouTube, which has struck deals with Vevo for licensed music. (Because of this loophole, Bop.fm became a breeding ground for bootlegs, like Soundcloud and Grooveshark.) But Bop.fm is much more than just a YouTube portal—it aggregates every streaming service you belong to, so that if Spotify has a song that Rdio doesn’t, you can listen to it without switching apps. Users can connect their YouTube, Soundcloud, Spotify, Rdio, Beats Music, Deezer, Xbox Music, and Rhapsody accounts, and play back a song from any of those services....

Hackers Derail Sony's PlayStation Network

Still reeling from a cyberintrusion that exposed massive amounts of personnel data from its entertainment division on the Internet, Sony was attacked again over the weekend. This time, hackers disrupted the company's PlayStation Network. However, unlike the foray against Sony Pictures Entertainment, which is still under investigation, the company quickly recovered from the PSN attack and had the network up and running by Monday morning. A group calling itself the "Lizard Squad" has claimed responsibility for what appears to be a DDoS attack.

If, like me, you skipped over the recovery key step when switching on two-factor authentication for your Apple ID, thinking that having the password plus a trusted device was sufficient, you’ll want to correct that.

TheNextWeb‘s Owen Williams recently found that if someone tries to hack your account, and you get locked out, there’s no way back in without a recovery key.

While Apple states on its website that a new recovery key can be generated so long as you know your password and have access to one of your trusted devices, this is not true once the account is locked. No recovery key, no access. No amount of pleading by Williams would persuade Apple to help. Apple...

Review: Apple iMac with 5K Retina display

The Apple iMac with Retina 5K display is the first Apple desktop computer to sport one of Apple's vaunted Retina displays. Although it has taken some time for the technology to make its way to the larger display format, the wait has been worth it. While introducing a Retina display on the iMac may not be the biggest surprise, Apple certainly raised some eyebrows when it revealed the price. In delivering its latest high-performance all-in-one computer with state-of-the-art display for $2499, it has also managed to redefine the value equation in the segment. Think Retro: Why the cute and quirky eMate was Apple...

It’s not that I don’t like Apple’s current hardware and software, but I fondly recall the days when its computers were suffused with a chirpy, cheerful
personality. Today’s slabs of aluminum and black glass are powerful, desirable, and elegant, but you could also call them austere, anodyne—perhaps even
unfriendly.

It’s a world away from the Apple of the ’80s and ’90s. Then there was a playfulness—a playfulness that shaded almost into anarchy—in things as dull as
error messages, even in flagship software. True, this was not always welcome, nor to everyone’s taste—Exhibit A: Clippy—which is probably why the practice died out as software became more professional.
