An anonymous reader quotes a report from Bloomberg: Apple plans to use drones and new indoor navigation features to improve its Maps service and catch longtime leader Google (Warning: source may be paywalled; alternate link), according to people familiar with the matter. The Cupertino, California-based company is assembling a team of robotics and data-collection experts that will use drones to capture and update map information faster than its existing fleet of camera-and-sensor ladened minivans, one of the people said. The data collected would be sent to Apple teams that rapidly update the Maps app to provide fresh information to users, the person added. Eight's smart mattress gives you a little more incentive to get out of bed, as you can set up a string of IFTTT recipes to improve your morning routine. The mysteries of the GPU in Apple's iPhone 7...

Users have praised the performance of Apple’s A10 Fusion chip in the iPhone 7, but its underlying graphics architecture may not be so new after all.

The GPU in the iPhone 7 uses a custom version of the PowerVR GT7600 GPU, which is based on the same graphics processor architecture as in last year’s iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, according to an analysis by The Linley Group, which specializes in semiconductors.

Apple has claimed that the A10 Fusion CPU is two times faster than its predecessor, the A9, and the GPU about 50 percent faster.

Benchmarking has revealed a mixed bag for A10 Fusion GPU’s performance, according to the analyst firm. Some benchmarks supported Apple’s GPU performance gain claims, and others fell way off. But the high levels of GPU performance are only temporary.

Apple reportedly betting on drones and indoor data...

Apple has been working to dramatically improve its Maps app ever since it’s botched launch back in 2012. And it’s been successful: Maps is now packed with great features, thanks in part to Apple’s fleet of minivans capturing on-the-ground data. But it’s still not Google Maps, so Apple has a new plan.

According to Bloomberg, the company is reportedly planning to use drones to quickly update Maps with fresh data, like road conditions, street sign changes, and construction updates, and other information that car cameras would have difficulty photographing.

Apple now takes your old Apple Watch for free...

After upgrading to the Apple Watch Series 2, people now have another option for what to do with their old smartwatches.

This week, Apple added the Apple Watch to the Apple Renew program, which aims to get people to send their old devices to be recycled properly free of charge. But Apple is not offering store credit or a gift card in exchange for sending in an old Watch.

Typically, customers who trade in iPhones, iPads, and Macs via Apple Renew receive a credit for the Apple Store. For example, recycling an iPhone 6s Plus with 128GB can get you a $300 gift card, and sending in a working MacBook is valued at about $450 in Apple Store credit. It seems that the Apple Watch trade-ins, like the iPod, don’t receive anything in return—well, except for the peace of mind that you’re helping out the environment.

IDC: tablet market to rebound in 2018

This could be good news for the iPad: worldwide tablet shipments are expected to decline by 12% in 2016, rounding out the year at 182.3 million shipments, according to a new forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. The research group expects the market to rebound in 2018 though growth will remain in the low single digits as detachable tablets slowly gain traction.

"The benefits of a thin and light design combined with a touchscreen are bolstering growth in the detachable tablet market, but are also bleeding over into the PC market as slim and convertible-type notebooks gain popularity," said Jitesh Ubrani, senior research analyst with IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers. Fitbit may buy smartwatch maker Pebble

Fitness wristband maker Fitbit is said to be close to a deal to acquire smartwatch maker Pebble, mainly for its intellectual property.

Fitbit is aiming to acquire Pebble’s assets particularly the PebbleOS, which has a large number of apps running on it and can be paired with both Apple’s iOS and Android, The Financial Times said Wednesday, citing several people close to the negotiations.

It is not clear how much Fitibit will be paying for the company. Both Pebble and Fitbit did not respond to requests for comment on the rumored acquisition. The Information also reported on a likely acquisition.

Pebble, which gave the smartwatch market a fillip in 2012 with a campaign on the crowdfunding Kickstarter platform, has veered around to a greater focus on fitness and other devices like a cellular-connected clip called Core. Its Time 2 and Pebble 2 were unveiled this year, adding a heart-rate monitor to the watches.

That means that customers can now send their old Apple Watch to be responsibly recycled through the company’s Apple Renew program free of charge, but it’s not offering customers a gift card or any credit in exchange like it does with iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Not sure what the secondary market is like for earlier Apple Watches, but seems to me it’d be much better to give your old Apple Watch to a friend who’s never experienced one. Reuse is a solid alternative to recycling, and living with an Apple Watch offers a better alternative to simply reading about one.

According to the latest market share survey from NetMarketShare, the market share for macOS rose, but that for iOS dipped again in November.

According to the report, among desktop operating systems, macOS had 6.74% of the global market share in November, up from 6.43% percent in October (that’s global market share; in the US it’s over 13%). The customer offered the following comment in his email to Cook:

“Give us a release date. I really bought in to the wireless vision you painted. Now I’m stuck waiting with my EarPods but can’t charge my 7 at the same time which I need to do at work. Let us know if it’s a month or 6 months, because then I’ll just buy some other wireless headphones.”

Cook replied with the following:

“Thanks for your note. Sorry for the delay—we are finalizing...

Netflix 9.0.1 for iOS released, adds offline viewing...

After months of rumors, Netflix has added an offline viewing feature to its application, as seen in the newly released Netflix 9.0.1 app for iOS.

According to Netflix, “many favorite streaming series and movies are already available for download, with more on the way.” Some of the content that’s ready to download includes Orange Is The New Black, Narcos and The Crown.

Users can snag content from a new “Available for Download” category within the app. When the option is available for an episode or movie, tap the download button like in the image below.

You can also distinguish between standard and high quality downloads, which affect the space occupied by the download.

There’s currently no word as to when an offline feature will be released for the desktop...

Report: Apple developing indoor mapping features,...

Apple is looking to continue expansion of Apple Maps with new indoor location mapping features for 2017, such as airport and museum navigation, according to a new Bloomberg story. The company is also working on new turn-by-turn features, including improved directions to switch lanes whilst driving.

Perhaps most interestingly, the report says Apple plans to deploy a fleet of flying drones to help with data collection efforts for Apple Maps. The drones would be able to analyze street signs, track the status of roadworks and more. Apple does not plan to release a drone as a consumer item to compete with products like the Parrot Drone; the fleet would be for its own private business uses.

Apple Pay has officially launched in Spain, as predicted in a report yesterday. The service is now available to customers of Banco Santander, with support for both debit and credit cards, alongside cards issued by Amex, Carrefour and Ticket Restaurant.

This Mujjo for the iPhone 7 Plus is a great case,...

The Mujjo Leather Case for iPhone 7 Plus, approximately $40, is a “wallet case” for the iPhone. It’s a gorgeous case, but not a very practical wallet, at least for me.

First, let’s examine at its strengths. Made out of high-quality, vegetable tanned leather, it looks great out of the box, and should acquire a striking patina over time as constant use helps break it in. The Leather Case is equipped with Mujjo’s Moulded Edge Technology, a polycarbonate solution that toughens the edges of the case and helps it to withstand the wear and tear caused by friction against jeans pockets.

Whether you can comfortable place an iPhone 7 Plus in your pockets is another matter. It fits okay in the lower pockets of my cargo pants, but is simply too big to fit comfortable in my blue jeans pockets.

As you’d expect, the openings of the Mujjo Leather Case expose the volume rockers and...

iPhone 7 and holiday spending driving up holiday...

Indexes from Fiksu DSP, the data-fueled mobile marketing technology company, reveal that mobile ad costs are on the rise, a result potentially due to iPhone 7 adoption, as well as early holiday ad spend. Fiksu’s indexes track year-over-year and monthly metrics, measuring cost per thousand impressions (CPM) and cost per purchaser (CPP) across mobile RTB advertising.

The data also shows that as advertisers see sustained returns and recognize the opportunity to find high quality users on the maturing Android platform, the marketplace is becoming flooded with competition, especially as the holiday season approaches.

“Seasonal competition is evident in this data, but the numbers indicate that these trends may be sustained over the long run,” says Tom Cummings, vice president, new market strategy at Fiksu DSP. “It’s growing increasingly evident that Android represents a great opportunity to find users who are more likely...

Apple will start blocking those iCloud Calendar spam...

Those annoying Calendar spam invites won’t be around much longer.

On Wednesday, Apple indicated that it was actively working to identify and block any further spam invites from hitting your iCloud Calendar. Last week, people started receiving suspicious spam invites on iOS and macOS alerting them of special sales for Ugg boots or Ray-Ban sunglasses.

The spammers were able to exploit an iCloud feature that uses email data to pop-up as Calendar notifications. If the spam invites were set as recurring events, the notifications would surface every day.

Address the issue, Apple sent the following statement to iMore:

Some Apple users have been plagued with iCloud calendar invite spam in recent weeks, with calendar periods being blocked up with unsolicited events from anonymous senders (usually with Chinese names). Apple has now acknowledged the issue in a statement to iMore, starting with an apology to anyone who has received iCloud calendar spam. The company says it is actively “identifying and blocking suspicious senders” to try and stem the arrival of the junk messages.

The Apple Daily Report for Nov. 30, 2016

The AWT News Update is on hiatus while my compadre, Steve, takes a road trip. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Apple has updated its website where customers can send in an old device for recycling to include the Apple Watch. That means that customers can now send their old Apple Watch to be responsibly recycled through the company’s Apple Renew program free of charge, but it’s not offering customers a gift card or any credit in exchange like it does with iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Apple announced at WWDC in June that Apple Pay would be coming to Spain at some point this year, and Spanish site Applesfera is reporting that the service will launch tomorrow for Banco...

Although the post-civilization genre is fairly crowded space, the zombie-killing horror ride has earned generally positive reviews from veteran games critics, who appreciated its narrative and level of detail.

Review: Twelve South HiRise Duet for Apple Watch and...

Twelve South's HiRise Duet ($120) is a new dock that can charge an Apple Watch and iPhone simultaneously. As you'd expect from Twelve South, HiRise Duet is made of high-end materials — its metal construction is accentuated by leather, and a rubber base prevents the stand and dock from scuffing up a surface. A magnetic Apple Watch charging disc is built right into the front of the stand, allowing an Apple Watch to charge while in Nightstand mode. The Lightning connector above can be adjusted to fit different iPhone cases, and HiRise Duet will even dock and charge an iPad, excluding the supersized 12.9" iPad Pro. Twelve South's dock comes with its own AC adapter — users don't have to provide any of their own cables.

At a meeting with shareholders Wednesday, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was asked numerous times what the company is doing about Windows Phones, and why do they keep hearing that Microsoft is abandoning smartphone manufacturer business. The stakeholders also asked why the company is seemingly focusing more on Android and iOS rival platforms instead of its own. From a report on GeekWire: Microsoft shareholder Dana Vance, owner of a Windows Phone and a Microsoft Band, said he received an email about the Microsoft Pix app but was surprised to learn that it was available for iPhone and Android but not Windows Phone. Ditto for Microsoft Outlook. He also alluded to reports that Microsoft has put the Band on the back burner. Given this, he asked Nadella to explain the company's vision for its consumer devices. As part of his response, Nadella said Microsoft's Windows camera and mail apps will include the same features as in Microsoft's apps for other platforms. "When we control things...
