iOS Insecurity - Designed by Apple?

The long-held belief that Android is the least secure of mobile OSes was shattered by security researcher and expert iOS hacker Jonathan Zdziarski over the weekend. He unveiled a host of iOS vulnerabilities, the scope of which was staggering: undocumented services that bypass backup encryption and can be accessed both via USB and wirelessly; a means to access all data encrypted with data protection if the device has not been rebooted since the user's PIN was last entered; and a packet sniffer that can be monitored remotely over WiFi.

Apple responds to troubling allegations of iOS...

Information security has never been a more sensitive subject than it is these days, so it’s little surprise that allegations from a security researcher that iOS contains a “backdoor” permitting access to users’ information provoked a strong response from Apple.

In his talk, “Identifying Back Doors, Attack Points, and Surveillance Mechanisms in iOS Devices,” Zdziarski claimed to have found systems within iOS that could be used to access users’ information, including photos, address-book information, voicemail messages, and more.

Well, let’s see …

Let’s start with the company’s phones. Admittedly they don’t look much like iPhones, but they are called … the Mi Phone. Still, I’m sure that’s coincidence.

Then there’s the company’s tablet. No prizes for guessing the name of that. And here’s what the Mi Pad looks like – remind you of anything?

Barra says that’s coincidence, too.

Changing the lives of people with Alzheimer’s, one...

Alive Inside, a documentary film being shown in selected theaters across the U.S., tells the story of a social worker using iPods and personalized playlists to bring new life to nursing home residents with Alzheimer’s.

Dan Cohen puts together playlists of music from when the patients were young, transfers them to an iPod and then plays them to patients who had been unresponsive to conversation, generating dramatic transformations, reports Re/code.

Audiences first encounter Henry hunched over in his wheelchair, head down, hands clasped firmly together, unresponsive to the world around him.

As soon as a pair of headphones are placed on his head, the 94-year-old dementia patient opens his eyes, sits up straight and begins...

What to look for in Apple's earnings...

It’s that time again—time to once more pore over page after page of financial details, to stare at endless columns of numbers, hoping that some obscure truth, unseen by most, will pop out at us. Yes, it’s time for Apple financials.

On Tuesday, Apple will release the numbers for its third quarter. Here’s a bit of what you can expect from the company’s announcements, as well as the subsequent skeet shoot Q&A from analysts. As ever, Macworld will be on hand with live coverage of the conference call, starting at 2 p.m. PT/5 p.m. ET.

The numbers

As usual, Apple provided guidance three months ago on how much money it would rake in during the third quarter. Back in April, outgoing CFO Peter Oppenheimer said the company expected revenues between $36 billion and $38 billion, with a gross margin between 37 percent and 38 percent. How, you might wonder, does that compare to the previous quarter and the year ago quarter?

New commercial debuts for MacBook Air, entitled...

An new ad by Apple that debuted on Monday takes something of a different approach than the company's recent iPhone and iPad commercials -- both in that it features a Mac (in this case the MacBook Air) and that shows off clearly-used equipment featuring user's methods of customizing their Air models mostly through the use of stickers, giving the ad its name. Using a stop-motion approach, dozens of customized MBAs are shown at one point even "playing" a game of Space Invaders on the lid....

Several backdoors included on every iOS device,...

[Updated with rebuttal from Apple] Apple's iOS platform contains several backdoors that may allow for Apple and/or governments to collect private data, according to a forensic scientist, Jonathan Zdziarski. Presenting at the recent Hackers On Planet Earth (HOPE/X) conference, Zdziarski said that that there are several conspicuous design gaps -- and some deliberately-included forensic services -- that make it possible to extract data using forensic tools. The services have names such as "lockdownd," "pcapd," and "mobile.file_relay."...

Intel has goosed the speed in its latest Haswell Core i5 and Core i7 processors, first unveiled yesterday. The new chips are destined for notebooks such as the MacBook Pro, which is expected to get a speed bump sometime this summer. The new clock speeds range from 2.2GHz to 3.0GHz across three new Core i5 models and four new Core i7 offerings. In addition, four budget "Bay Trail" Celeron and Pentium processors were released as well, rated between 1.58GHz and 2.16Hz....

‘Stickers’ Apple Commercial Highlights User Love for...

Apple launched a new commercial on Monday called "Stickers." The spot is a rare one in that it solely features Mac hardware, and it shows some of the many ways that people decorate their MacBook Air laptops. It uses the tagline: "The notebook people love." All I know is that I love this spot. For one thing, it rings true. People do love decorating their MacBook Airs (and their Pros, for that matter). For another, it's great to see the Mac being promoted on TV. iOS, iPhone, iPad, and the iPod before it have long dominated Apple's advertising. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but, you know, yay Mac!

WSJ claims Apple preparing 70-80M 'iPhone 6...

A new report citing unnamed sources "familiar with the matter" claims that Apple has put in orders for its largest-ever initial iPhone run, asking suppliers Foxconn and Pegatron to produce between 70 million and 80 million units for the devices' debut in the fall through the end of the year. Claiming that the order includes both 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models (though the latter has yet to reveal solid evidence of actually existing), the new upcoming production run compares to the 50-60 million units ordered for the iPhone 5s and 5c last year....

Television and movie streaming service, Netlfix, is updating its app for Apple TV. Its popular web and iPad feature "Post-Play" allows users a brief countdown once a show's credits begin rolling, followed by automatic playing of the next episode in a series--unless otherwise interrupted. AppleInsider has speculated that though the Post-Play feature was found on multiple Apple TV units during testing, it is likely that the update has yet to be fully released to all customers....

Apple has ordered between 70 and 80 million next-generation iPhones for delivery by December 30th, according to unnamed sources cited by The Wall Street Journal. The orders are for a mix of 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones, which has been dubbed iPhone 6 in the media. If true, it would be a record number of iPhone units for any quarter, well above the 51 million iPhone record holiday quarter in 2013.

On Monday, Apple posted an EFI update specifically aimed at the mid-2011 model MacBook Airs that are running OS X 10.9.2 (Mavericks) or later. The update addresses two wake-from-sleep issues: one in which the computer would take longer than expected to wake from sleep, and the other (more rare) issue of cooling fans ramping up to full speed on waking from sleep. Owners must meet both conditions (mid-2011 MBA, and running Mavericks 10.9.2 or later) for the update to apply....

The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple has told its suppliers to prepare to build a record number of next-gen iPhones. As reported earlier this month, both the 4.7-inch and the larger 5.5-inch models of the upcoming iPhone are expected to enter mass production in the coming weeks.

This is a big jump from the previous iPhone models. Last year the company only ordered 50-60 million of the iPhone 5s and 5c....

Apple responds to iOS backdoor access claims, denies...

Over the weekend, iOS security hacker Jonathan Zdziarski released a presentation claiming to show how Apple had purposefully made backdoor access points for a variety of system and user data on iOS devices, that would usually be locked and encrypted via the passcode. The legitimacy of the claims is still questionable.

Apple has now commented on the matter, unsurprisingly denying any misconduct. Apple reiterates its previous statement: ‘Apple has never worked with any government agency from any country to create a backdoor in any of our products or services’.

The comment says that the information exposed in the presentation is used for diagnostics purposes by...

Judge Rules Police Can Stuff Entire Email Accounts...

Concerns about overly broad searches of digital data by law enforcement once again have emerged after a federal judge ruled that officials armed with a warrant can seize and hold a suspect's entire email account. Such an action would not violate the suspect's rights under the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution, said U.S. Magistrate Judge Gabriel Gorenstein in support of a warrant he issued earlier this month. One worry is that police could retain email accounts and search them repeatedly, said ACLU staff attorney Nate Wessler.

Intel has debuted the next generation of its Core i5 and i7 processors, according to a report from CPU World.
