In a note to investors — as noted by AppleInsider — Guggenheim analyst Robert Cihra says Apple’s "other products” category is poised to become the company's fastest growing segment.

The segment includes the Apple Watch, HomePod, Apple Watch, Beats products, the iPod mini, and other products. Apple's "other products" brought in $11 billion in revenue in calendar year 2016. Cihra sees the number doubling by calendar year 2019 to $22 billion. He predicts sales will push the “other products” category to $19 billion, or 7% of Apple's total revenue. In addition, he sees it being Apple's fastest growing segment, posting 34% year-over-year improvement.

The analyst thinks Apple will ship 22 million Apple Watches this year, representing 26% year-over-year growth and earning $9.5 billion, or 3.6% of the...

Indian language bug fixed in upcoming iOS 11.3,...

A bug that causes app and system crashing on iPhones, iPads, and Macs due to a specific letter in the Indian language Telugu has been fixed in Apple's upcoming iOS 11.3 and macOS 10.13.4 software updates, reports MacRumors

Apple devices can’t render the Indian character, causing apps or the entire system to crash. If the character is sent in an iMessage, for example, the recipient's Messages app will crash when the conversation is opened.

If the character is pasted into the Safari or Chrome address bar on Mac, the browsers crash. This behavior extends to virtually any system text field on iOS and macOS, resulting in many third-party apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger being affected as well, notes MacRumors

Guess what? Sonos One speakers also damage wood

Check the picture in this tweet:

Guess what? Sonos One speakers also damage wood.

— Caitlin McGarry (@Caitlin_McGarry) February 15, 2018

This, clearly, is the nature of the beast.

Seems to me, “damage” implies permanence. As far as I can tell, the rings left by HomePod, etc., are like smudges. A bit of mayo (or whatever cleaning miracle you use for your wood surfaces) and elbow grease, and it’s all cleaned up.

Or put something solid under the speaker to prevent the ring in the first place.

Yesterday it was discovered that HomePod can leave white rings on oiled wood finishes during normal use — something that is not obvious nor ideal. Now a new test has backed up that claim from Apple and highlighted another smart speaker that has a similar behavior…

TechInsights: Apple’s HomePod costs $216 to build

Mark Gurman, Bloomberg:

Apple Inc.’s HomePod, the company’s first foray into speakers in a decade, costs $216 to build and generates thinner profit margins than other products like the Apple Watch and iPhone, according to analysis by TechInsights.

Given the HomePod’s $349 price, that $216 cost suggests Apple is generating margins of about 38 percent, according to the product analysis firm. That compares with margins of 66 percent and 56 percent for the Google Home and Amazon Echo, products that compete in the smart-speaker market, but offer lower audio quality, according to the firm’s estimates.

Margin is complicated. Lots of analysis goes into setting prices and, thus, determining margin. But it does seem reasonable to assume this is Apple entering a somewhat crowded market, wanting to keep their pricing relatively low (compared to their cost) to help raise demand.

The bulk of the HomePod’s costs come from the internal speaker technology, including the...

Apple patent is for a transparent screen that could...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 20180047320) for a “transparent electronic device” — the device being a display to be used for, among other things, augmented reality (AR) purposes on iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that electronic devices increasingly include display screens as part of the user interface of the device. As these devices have become more popular, there has been an increase in demand for the type and amount of functionality that displays in these devices supply. Apple says there’s a need for displays that provide increased functionality to a user.

What sort of functionality? A screen could have a viewing area with a transparent portion enabling a user to view objects behind the electronic device by looking at the display — in other words, an AR overlay.

According to the invention, the display may include one or more display screens as well as a flexible circuit for connecting the display screens with internal...

The $350 HomePod costs $216 to build

According to new research from TechInsights, Apple spends $216 to build a $350 HomePod, so margins from the tech giant's wireless speaker are slimmer than, for instance, those for its iPhone line.

Apple is generating margins of about 38%, according to the product analysis firm. That compares with margins of 66% and 56% for the Google Home and Amazon Echo.

“Apple is compressing their margins a bit, wanting to go big or go home,” said Al Cowsky, TechInsight’s costing manager. “In doing so, I suspect they reduced the selling price from a normal Apple margin in order to sell more units on volume.”

By Chris Gannon

The iOttie Easy Smart Tap 2 is a wonderful mount for your tablet — if you have an iPad 3/4, iPad mini, or iPad Air. I’ve been using the $44.95 mount for some time now and have really come to appreciate the use I get out of it in our van.

Going on long trips with little ones (and I have three!) can get pretty squirrelly. Sometimes the only thing you can really do is put something on the iPad, and let everyone chill out a little bit. However, nothing can be more frustrating that having an Apple tablet, but no way of making it stand up and stay in place.

I can’t tell you the amount of time it has taken me to get the iPad to sit up and be still while driving. My wife and I often grab anything we can find in the van to prop it up with: jackets, sippy cups, McDonald’s apple pies, etc.. Of course these don’t really work that well, and then it’s only a matter of time before someone...

How to control Apple Music playback on a HomePod

  • To see what’s playing now (and next), open Apple Music, then tap the HomePod playback controls. If you don’t see the HomePod controls, on the Now Playing screen, tap the icon that looks like a pyramid with concentric circles behind it, then choose HomePod.
  • To choose what’s next, after choosing HomePod in the Apple Music app, tap Library, For You, Browse, Radio, or Search to find music to play. You can choose to play an item next or add it to the end of the Up Next queue.

Apple confirms that HomePod may leave white rings on...

As nifty as the HomePod may be, it can possibly leave white rings on wood surfaces with an oil or wax finish.

The discovery was noted in reviews by Wirecutter and Pocket-lint as well as highlighted by VentureBeat, with at least one user sharing the problem on Twitter.

Pocket-lint’s Stuart Miles offered the following statement about the issue in his review:

“For our tests we placed the speaker on a solid oak kitchen worktop treated with Danish oil.

Within 20 minutes the HomePod had caused a white discoloured ring to appear on the wood that some days later has faded, although still hasn’t completely disappeared.

We subsequently tested the HomePod on other materials: the same wood that hadn’t been treated with Danish oil and a regular lacquered desk and haven’t seen the same issues.”

Apple has stated that it is “not unusual” for a speaker with a silicone base to leave a “mild mark” when placed on certain oiled or waxed surfaces,...

You’ll apparently be able to see the gift shop of the new Apple Park campus, but that’s about it.

Answering a shareholder question as to whether shareholders would ever get a tour of Apple Park in the new Steve Jobs Theater, Apple CEO offered the following reply:

“Probably never. Because there are secrets inside the spaceship. The problem with opening up the main facility for tours is we have so much confidential stuff around. “It’s sort of the bane of my existence to hold things confidential now.”

Cook’s answer echoes a comment about the campus last year from Apple’s head designer, Jony Ive, who called it “our house.”

“We didn’t make Apple Park for other people,” Ive said. “So I think a lot of the criticisms … are utterly bizarre, because it wasn’t made for you. And I know how we work, and you don’t.”

To put a fine point on it, you’re not getting inside one of the Apple Park buildings without being an Apple employee with a badge.

Apple confirms HomePod can leave white ring on wood...

An unhappy discovery after we placed a HomePod on an oiled butcher-block countertop and later on a wooden side table was that it left a defined white ring in the surface. I didn’t have my HomePod placed on an oiled wood surface, so I never noticed this. Still, it doesn’t seem like this is something you would want to have happen when placing a speaker in your home.

Apple’s HomePod: Paying $350 for a speaker that says...

Jeff Dunn

What is this thing?

That, in essence, is the question most onlookers have asked about Apple’s HomePod speaker since its unveiling last summer. The natural inclination is to compare it to smart speakers like the Amazon Echo or Google Home. It’s a speaker with a talking assistant in it, the thinking goes. Apple just wants a piece of that growing pie.

Apple's Software 'Problem' and '...

According to media reports, Apple is planning to postpone some new features for iOS and macOS this year to focus on improving reliability, stability and performance of the existing versions. Steven Sinofsky, a former President of the Windows Division, shared his insights into the significance of this development: Several important points are conflated in the broad discussion about Apple and software: Quality, pace of change, features "versus" quality, and innovation. Scanning the landscape, it is important to recognize that in total the work Apple has been doing across hardware, software, services, and even AI/ML, in total -- is breathtaking and unprecedented in scope, scale, and quality. Few companies have done so much for so long with such a high level of consistency. This all goes back to the bet on the NeXT code base and move to Intel for Mac OS plus the iPod, which began the journey to where we are today. [...] What is lost in all of this recent discussion is the nuance...

Report: publishers jump on Slack, then pitch big...

When news publishers have a big story these days,” their editors jump on Slack and pitch it to an unlikely partner: Apple,” according to The Information. The tech giant has built a “small but powerful news team that is making Apple a key distribution outlet for news publishers,” the article adds.

From a pitch received via a dedicated Slack channel, Apple’s editorial team of about a dozen staffers in the U.S. decides what story gets featured at the top of the app or to the left of the home screen. That can yield a flood of traffic for publishers.

However, some publishers feel that there’s not a consistent, predictable stream of readers through the service. Instead, major traffic is driven by Apple's selection of "Spotlight" or "Top Stories" with little attention given to non-breaking news.

The Apple News service  is...

Twelve South launches new SurfacePad leather cover...

Apple accessory maker Twelve South today launched a new SurfacePad cover for the iPhone X. More like a Smart Cover for the iPhone than a traditional case, it protects the front and rear of your iPhone X, while providing sleep/wake functionality by way of a magnetized front cover.

The iPhone X SurfacePad also provides two handy credit card slots, works as a stand for videos and FaceTime calls, and is comprised of full-grain leather instead of Napa leather like the previous version. As a result, users can expect the updated cover to have a longer lifespan and wear in better over time.

The $49.99 SurfacePad is available in three colors: Black, Cognac, and Deep Teal. Twelve South sent us samples of the latter two to examine. Watch our hands-on impressions for more details. more…

The sources said the chips…

Analysts: 2018 iPhones will sport a TrueDepth camera...

In a note to clients — as noted by MacRumors — Barclays analysts Andrew Gardiner, Hiral Patel, Joseph Wolf, and Blayne Curtis said Apple will launch three new iPhone models this year with a second-generation TrueDepth camera system, which will potentially be reduced in size.

The TrueDepth camera system is required for Face ID on the iPhone X. A smaller notch would please the critics who say it’s too darn big on the iPhone X. However, as MacRumors notes, an earlier rumor suggested the notch won't be reduced in size until 2019 or later, and it's generally expected that 2018 iPhones will look virtually identical to the iPhone X.

Only 19% of IT professionals believe Apple products...

Spiceworks has announced the results of a new survey that examines how businesses are securing their data and devices on corporate and public Wi-Fi networks. It revealed the perceived Wi-Fi risks associated with traditional computing devices is much lower, particularly among Apple products.

Only about 19% of IT professionals believe Apple laptops, tablets, and smartphones are very to extremely vulnerable to Wi-Fi based attacks. This compares to 30% who believe Windows and Android devices are very to extremely vulnerable.

The Spiceworks survey show that IT professionals consider IoT [Internet of Things] devices the most vulnerable to Wi-Fi-based attacks, yet 50% of organizations have IoT devices connected to their Wi-Fi network. The findings indicate that although organizations are taking steps to increase Wi-Fi security, many IT professionals aren't confident in their ability to keep corporate data secure on IoT...

Skydio launches R1 – an autonomous flying drone that...

From Drone DJ:

The Skydio R1 drone has been years in the making but it is here now! Our sister site, Electrek, first wrote about it when one of the senior engineers left Tesla to join the then start-up drone company.

What makes the R1 drone unlike any other drone you’ve seen, is its advanced obstacle avoidance system, the Skydio Autonomy Engine. With 12 cameras, the R1 creates a 3D map of its surroundings and tries to predict the movements of its subject, i.e. a skier, runner, biker, up to 4 seconds into the future so that it can follow the subject while keeping it in the center of the frame and avoiding obstacles at the same time. Impossible you say? Wait until you watch the video...

How to connect your Apple TV to HomePod, use HomePod...

Terrific article from iMore’s Lory Gil. Long story short:

  • On Apple TV, go to home screen (this next step only works from the home screen).
  • On Apple TV remote, hold down pause button for 3 seconds or so.
  • When AirPlay menu appears, select your HomePod. This will route Apple TV audio to HomePod.

Now go play a movie. The audio should be coming out of your HomePod. If you are watching in front of your TV, this isn’t really ideal, but if you are moving around, perhaps working in the kitchen with a long view of the TV screen, this can be terrifically convenient.

Now that audio is piped into your HomePod, you can say things to HomePod Siri like:

  • Volume 60 (that sets the volume to 60%)
  • Pause (pauses the video playback)
  • Go back 20 seconds

Good stuff.

Analyst: Apple to ship 100 million 6.1-inch LCD...

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that Apple will ship 100 million iPhones in the second half of 2018.

He thinks the built of those as coming from a new 6.1-inch, LCD smartphone that will be priced between $699 and $799. The analyst is unsure if this model will replace both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, though he thinks it’s possible. However, since it will have an LCD screen, it will be less expensive than the OLED iPhone X.

Kuo thinks Apple will introduce at least three new smartphones this year, all of which will sport Face ID and ditch the home button. In addition to a successor to the iPhone X and the LCD model, Apple is also purportedly planning an iPhone X variant with a 6.5-inch OLED display.

Currently, no China-baed company is producing memory chips. Yangtze's first lines aren't set to begin until sometime this year.
