Big Tech Squashes New York's 'Right To...

Damon Beres, writing for The Huffington Post: Major tech companies like Apple have trampled legislation that would have helped consumers and small businesses fix broken gadgets. New York state legislation that would have required manufacturers to provide information about how to repair devices like the iPhone failed to get a vote, ending any chance of passage this legislative session. Similar measures have met the same fate in Minnesota, Nebraska, Massachusetts and, yes, even previously in New York. Essentially, politicians never get to vote on so-called right to repair legislation because groups petitioning on behalf of the electronics industry gum up the proceedings. "We were disappointed that it wasn't brought to the floor, but we were successful in bringing more attention to the issue," New York state Sen. Phil Boyle (R), a sponsor of the bill, told The Huffington Post.

Apple Explains Why iMessage Isn't Coming To...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Network World: Ahead of Apple's WWDC keynote this year, one of the more bizarre and sketchy rumors we saw take shape claimed that Apple was planning to deliver iMessage to Android. As is typically the case, the rumor mill took this somewhat ridiculous rumor and ran with it. The only problem is that some people were so busy trying to figure out the ramifications of iMessage hitting Android that they didn't take a step back and try and figure out if this is something Apple would even contemplate in the first place. Remember, every move Apple makes is strategic and geared towards making more money, either via device sales or software. That being the case, iMessage on Android would not only be a free app, but it would also eliminate a user-experience advantage of iOS. Interestingly enough, Walt Mossberg of The Verge asked a senior Apple executive about the rumor whereupon the nameless executive all but indicated that iMessage will never be...

Apple and Microsoft lobbied to remove the rifle...

New emoji are typically proposed by the Unicode Consortium and approved for the next version of the spec without much fuss, but a rifle emoji proposed for Unicode 9.0 apparently ran into opposition from two major members of the consortium: Apple and Microsoft.

According to a report from Buzzfeed, Apple objected to the idea of introducing a second gun emoji on its platforms, and Microsoft joined in. The decision to remove the rifle emoji, as well as a second "pentathlon" emoji depicting a man holding a pistol among other athletes, was apparently unanimous.

“Nobody in the room seemed to mind not encoding the rifle,” said a Unicode Consortium...

Thanks To Apple's Influence, You're Not...

Charlie Warzel, reporting for BuzzFeed News: Unicode, the technical organization in charge of selecting and overseeing emojis, debated and ultimately decided to remove a rifle from its list of new emoji candidates in 2016, according to multiple persons who attended its quarterly meeting last May. The decision was led and championed by one of tech's biggest companies: Apple. Apple is one of Unicode's largest member companies and not only has voting rights, but also holds considerable influence. Millions of people use emojis on Apple's software platforms. According to sources in the room, Apple started the discussion to remove the rifle emoji, which had already passed into the encoding process for the Unicode 9.0 release this June. Apple told the consortium it would not support a rifle on its platforms and asked for it not to be made into an emoji. "I heard Apple speak up about it and also Microsoft," one member present at the discussions told BuzzFeed News.

Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus face a potential sales ban in China due to a patent dispute with a little-known local company.

The phones infringe a design patent held by Chinese device maker Shenzhen Baili, a Beijing intellectual property office ruled, according to a notice posted Thursday.

The office ordered Apple and its partners to halt sales of both products, though Apple has appealed and the phones are currently still on sale there.

“We appealed an administrative order from a regional patent tribunal in Beijing last month and as a result the order has been stayed pending review by the Beijing IP Court,” Apple said Friday in an email.

Siri for Mac beta hands-on video released

This is what it’s like to use Siri on the Mac.

The cool cats at MacRumors have assembled a demo video of using the Siri beta on macOS Sierra, which is due for release this fall. Siri on the Mac can perform many of the same functions available on iOS, like answering simple queries, looking up information, sending messages, opening apps, and more, plus there are Mac-specific functions.

Siri can be accessed through the menu bar, a dock icon, or a keyboard command, and the Siri results, displayed in individual windows, can be pinned to the Today section of the Notification Center or added to documents and files.

Take a gander:

MacOS Sierra and Siri for Mac are still currently in beta and available only to the developer community at present, but Apple has stated it plans to...

If you’ve been following our headphone reviews, you know that we've had good experiences with Audio-Technica’s “SonicPro” line of headphones. We gave broad recommendations for both the ATH-MSR7 and ATH-MSR7NC, even if we did find them a bit bright sounding and had some concerns about creaks coming from their plastic joints. In this review, we take a look at the latest incarnation of Audio-Technica’s 45mm True Motion driver, the on-ear Bluetooth-enabled ATH-SR5BT ($199). The headphone comes in white, as seen here, or black.{/exp:char_limit}

Brief look at the new features coming to Apple Music

Kirk McElhearn:

Apple has released developer previews of iOS 10 and macOS 10.12. There are major changes to Apple Music, and they show up in both iTunes and the Music app on iOS. It’s worth noting that Apple can roll out these changes whenever they want in iTunes; they don’t need to actually update the app. Elements such as the iTunes Store and Apple Music are merely web pages that display in iTunes, so, while the iTunes app hasn’t changed, the new display of Apple Music is visible.

Nice overview, take a look.

A bizarre twist, Apple infringing on a Chinese patent, but that’s what’s being reported. Important to note that Apple has the right to appeal (can’t imagine they won’t) and that this ruling applies to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and not the current models.

Apple iPhones Found to Have Violated Chinese Rival...

Beijing's intellectual property regulator has ordered Apple to stop sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the city, after it found that the design of Apple's iconic smartphone is too similar to a Chinese phone. The aforementioned handsets infringe on a Chinese patent for exterior design held by a company called Shenzhen Baili for its 100C smartphone. From a Bloomberg report: While the decision covers only Beijing, future lawsuits against Apple could take the case as a precedent, potentially influencing the outcomes of litigation elsewhere in China. Baili is one of scores of smartphone brands trying to cash in on the country's mobile boom. [...] "If the position by the Beijing IP office is upheld and Apple doesn't appeal further, then in theory they wouldn't be able to sell the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus," IP specialist Ted Chwu said. The iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus were launched in 2014. What took them so long?

Apple may have to halt sales of its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in China after a the company was ruled to violate patent rights of a Chinese company, Bloomberg reports. The Beijing Intellectual Property Office ruled the iPhones infringe upon Baili’s 100C phone (which doesn’t look that similar to Apple’s iPhones). The decision only affects Beijing, but it could be used as precedent in China. Apple can appeal the ruling, and the report…

Bluetooth 5 will quadruple range, double speed,...

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) says its next release, coming late 2016 or early 2017, will be dubbed Bluetooth 5 and will include “significantly” increased range, speed, and broadcast messaging capacity.  Expect to see support for it in Apple devices next year.

Extending range will deliver “robust, reliable” Internet of Things (IoT) connections that make full-home and building and outdoor use cases a reality, says Mark Powell, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. Higher speeds will send data faster and optimize responsiveness.

“Increasing broadcast capacity will propel the next generation of ‘connectionless’ services like beacons and location-relevant information and navigation,” Powell adds. “These Bluetooth advancements open up more possibilities and enable SIG companies – now at an all-time high of 30,000 member companies – to build an accessible, interoperable IoT.”

Beijing Intellectual Property Office: the iPhone 6/...

Beijing’s intellectual property authority has ruled Apple violated the design patents of a Chinese device maker and may have to halt sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the city, reports Bloomberg.

The Apple smartphones infringe on Shenzhen Baili’s patent rights because of similarities to its 100C phone (pictured), according to the Beijing Intellectual Property Office wrote in its decision. Apple can appeal the ruling and could be allowed to continue selling its phones during the process. While the decision covers only Beijing, future lawsuits against Apple could take the case as a precedent, potentially influencing the outcomes of litigation elsewhere in China, notes Bloomberg.

CNBC says Apple has immediately appealed that ruling and that all company products are still for sale throughout the country.

Opinion: Does integrated VoIP support in iOS 10...

The first true mobile phones back in the 1980s did exactly one thing: phone calls. It wasn’t until 1994 that carriers introduced what was then a revolutionary idea – using mobile phones to send text messages. I’m old enough to remember when only geeks did it, and it took several years before it really took off as a mass-market thing.

Fast-forward to today and, for many of us, the very least-frequent thing we do with our phones is use them to make phone calls. When I do make a voice call, I’m as likely to use a VoIP app like FaceTime or Skype as I am the actual phone app on my iPhone.

With iOS 10, Apple makes that behaviour likely for even more people. The VoIP API effectively allows apps like Skype, Viber, WhatsApp, Facebook calling and others to be integrated into the iPhone every bit as deeply as the phone app itself …
