CES – TiVo Demos Alexa, Google, and IFTTT...

LAS VEGAS – TiVo has been making a lot of changes to its user interface lately, and it’s not all just on the surface. Under-the-hood they’ve added some hooks and been hard at work putting all the pieces together for some pretty impressive third-party integrations. Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integrations are pretty far along, and TiVo is close to getting certifications for both of those, likely being available before the end of February. More than just turning TiVo on and off, these voice assistant integrations allow for fairly granular controls, including channel changing, play/pause, rewind, and even commercial skip. IFTTT integrations take this one step further, allowing bidirectional communications. This means TiVo could tell IFTTT that the “press D to Skip” icon is on the screen, and that could trigger an IFTTT skill to send the “skip” message back to TiVo. Yep, auto-skip is available and I’ve seen it in action! Even better news: IFTTT integration will work all...

Comment: As ad industry says Apple will cost it ‘...

One of the largest Internet advertising companies yesterday told the Guardian that Apple’s implementation of Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) in Safari would result in a loss of revenue amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars.

ITP doesn’t block ads, but instead blocks cross-site tracking – a method used by advertisers to serve ads based on your interests by gearing them to the types of website you visit. The ad industry argues that this enables ads to be more relevant to consumers, while Apple argues that it represents an intrusion into the browsing privacy of its customers …

You'll flip for the JBL Flip 2 speaker

By Chris Gannon

I’ve been using the JBL Flip 2 portable wireless speaker for a few weeks now, and the first word that comes to mind is "Wow!" If you're in the market for a powerful Bluetooth speaker at a reasonable price, the JBL Flip 2 is where you should look first — especially since the price has been reduced from $99.95 to $69.99.

First, and most importantly as with any speaker, is how it sounds. It sounds good, really good. (“I like it a lot” to quote Lloyd Christmas.) I'm not an expert when it comes to speakers, but I’m probably like most people reading this and can tell the difference between something that sounds bad, something that sounds good, and something that sounds great. This little speaker sounds great.

I can hear all my music the way I think it is supposed to be appreciated. The highs and lows are both very crisp. The Flip 2 is...

How to delete a disk set using Disk Utility in macOS...

You can use the Disk Utility in macOS High Sierra to delete a disk set that's no longer needed. When you delete a set, the data recorded on the disks isn't deleted. For example, deleting a mirrored RAID set leaves each disk in the set with a copy of all the RAID data.

When you delete a concatenated set, all the data is copied to the first disk of the set (as long as the first disk has enough disk space to store the data), providing a single volume with all the data. Before deleting anything, back up any important files. Then:

    •    In Disk Utility, select a disk set that you want to delete in the sidebar.

    •    Click the Delete RAID button.

    •    Click Delete.

    •    To erase all the disks in a disk set:

    •    Back up any important files.

    •    In Disk Utility, select a disk set that you want to erase in the sidebar.

    •    Click the Erase button  in the toolbar.

Remove a disk from a disk set...

Zurich Apple Store location evacuated after iPhone...

Not every iPhone battery is going to behave perfectly.

An Apple store in Zurich, Switzerland was temporarily evacuated on Tuesday after an iPhone’s battery at the service desk overheated in the middle of a removal procedure, emitting smoke and burning the worker who was doing the work.

The incident caused the technician to burn his hand and a total of seven people received medical attention. Local police evacuated roughly 50 customers and employees from the Apple Store location.

“The staff responded well and correctly,” police added in a statement. “It sprinkled quartz sand over the overheated battery so that the smoke could be contained and sucked out after switching on the ventilation.”

Forensic specialists who studied the incident stated that the battery was damaged either by the owner prior to the service procedure or during the removal procedure, igniting the electrolyte used in lithium-ion batteries from every manufacturer.

Safari 11.0.2 can be updated via the App Store and its “Updates” tab and requires macOS El Capitan 10.11.6 or later to install and run.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: An open letter to Apple from some investors sparked the tech giant to respond by promising new software tools for parents to restrict and monitor their kids' smartphone use. "We think deeply about how our products are used and the impact they have on users and the people around them," Apple said in its statement to The Wall Street Journal. "We take this responsibility very seriously and we are committed to meeting and exceeding our customers' expectations, especially when it comes to protecting kids."

This includes hand-held video or video captured while in movement, whether walking or attaching the camera to a motorcycle on a bumpy road. That's the latest hot take reaction to the issue of kids being given permissive parental approval to stay up all night on their iOS devices, leaving them sleep deprived and distracted. Apple's parental controls on iOS are focused on limiting access to content and specific apps, but the company already has tools in place to enforce parents' wishes on the Mac. It just needs to bring these to iOS.

Editorial: The super exciting failure of CES 2018

After working hard to dismiss iPhone X as too expensive, AirPods as a very minor success and HomePod as far-off vaporware missing the window of opportunity afforded to smart speakers, the low-paid writers hired by the Associated Press, Bloomberg, CNET and Reuters to fill the gaps that regular staff can't get to are again converging on Las Vegas to depict the really big prototype TV concepts of CES as being potentially affordable, commercially significant at some point in the future--and anything but vaporware.

If you've been wanting to get your hands on a 10.5-inch iPad Pro but didn't want to pay full price, your ship has just come in. Apple is now selling fully refurbished 10.5-inch iPad Pros starting as low as $549 for the Wi-Fi only/64GB model.

The pricing for the refurbished iPad Pros is as follows:

  • Wi-Fi only, 64GB: $549
  • Wi-Fi+Cellular, 64GB: $659
  • Wi-Fi only, 256GB: $679

Rumor: Apple plans to invest in LG Innotek

Apple plans to invest in LG Innotek in order to secure a steady supply of 3D sensing modules for this year’s iPhones and iPads, according to The Investor. The sensing module, which enables a mobile device to capture 3-D data and recognize a user even in a dark environment, is a key component of iPhone X’s facial recognition solution.

Quoting unnamed sources, The Investor says Apple has decided to offer financial support for LG Innotek in the form of an upfront payment (though the exact amount is unknown). Some market watchers said the move would be in line with a temporary supply shortage of the 3-D sensing modules late last year, which had affected the sales of iPhone X.

Chances that the rumor is true, according to the Sellers Research Group (that’s me): 90%. It makes sense that Apple would take this step considering the problems it had at one point with iPhone X...

Everything is getting smarter, including your toothbrush. Colgate announced today the release of the new $99.95 Colgate Smart Electronic Toothbrush E1, which not only monitors brushing but is integrated with Apple ResearchKit so that the dental hygiene company can "anticipate the future of oral care."

The Colgate Smart Electronic Toothbrush E1 was designed with the help of dentists and features real-time sensors and artificial intelligence algorithms to make sure that 16 different zones of the mouth are being effectively brushed.

The Colgate Connect app will ask for permission to collect anonymized data through Apple ResearchKit, and it connects through Bluetooth to an iPhone or iPad. The app has a 3D brushing coach, providing a custom oral care routine for the user and encouraging better brushing habits. The toothbrush was designed in collaboration with Kolibree, which on Monday released the Kolibree Magik...

A new study from Juniper Research has found that the global number of registered mobile domestic money transfer users is expected to reach 2.5 billion this year, up from an estimated 1.7 billion in 2016.

This will be driven by social media apps such as WeChat, Facebook and others already witnessing a dramatic rise in service usage, alongside new services including Apple Pay Cash, and Zelle Pay; with leading mobile money services driving growth in emerging markets, adds the research group.

Juniper believes that 2018 will be the year for social payments with key rollouts from Apple, Google and Facebook expected to drive the much delayed social payments market, as a subsector of the wider mobile P2P market.
