News: Australian banks denied interim approval for...

Australia’s anti-trust regulator has refused to grant interim approval for the country’s three largest banks to collectively negotiate with Apple to support their own mobile payment apps on the iPhone platform, Reuters reports. The three banks filed a joint application last month requesting permission from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to negotiate as a group to persuade Apple to give them access to its NFC…

Australia denies banks approval to jointly negotiate...

Reuters:

Australia’s anti-trust regulator on Friday said it would not grant the country’s three biggest banks interim approval to collectively negotiate with Apple Inc to install their own electronic payments applications on iPhones.

Australia’s three biggest banks, including the number one lender National Australia Bank (NAB), last month lodged a joint application seeking permission to negotiate as a bloc from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

The ACCC said that its decision not to grant the banks the interim ruling was not indicative of whether the full ruling, expected in October, would be successful or not.

And:

Apple, which operates its own Apple Pay mobile wallet, does not allow third-party electronic payment apps to be loaded onto to the hugely popular smartphones. The banks are seeking to be able to negotiate jointly for access to Apple’s phones without themselves being accused of violating anti-competition law....

Telepaint still holds up as a unique and addictive...

These days, keeping up with games can be a full-time job. So how do you separate the signal from the noise, the wheat from the chaff, the Temple Runs from the Temple Jumps? Allow us to help by regularly selecting a game You Should Play.

Truly unique—and totally addictive—puzzle games don’t hit the App Store every day. But Telepaint is an adorable puzzle-platformer with a clever, touch-friendly twist: Instead of furiously tapping your screen to jump, duck, and slide past obstacles, you use a portal system to get your little paint bucket protagonist safely to his paint brush buddy.

iOS and Android Combined for Record 99% of...

Joe Rossignol, writing for MacRumors:

The latest numbers from research firm Gartner reveal that the smartphone industry continues to be a virtual two-horse race between iOS and Android. The operating systems combined for a record 99.1% worldwide market share in the second calendar quarter of 2016, compared to 96.8% in the year-ago period.

That’s amazing to me. Just a bit more than nine years ago, neither company (Apple for iOS, Google for Android) had a horse in this race. And now, everyone else is gone or, at best, window dressing.

Comment: As optical image stabilization seemingly...

Zac made the point yesterday that just because the iPhone 7 is sounding like a second S-year model, that doesn’t mean that mass-market buyers – ‘normals’ – won’t be wowed by it. Apple has an enviable ability to take relatively mainstream features and make them sound magical, and a report by French site NWE seems to make one rumored feature sound more likely.

While the dual-camera system slated for the larger iPhone 7 Plus is an obvious talking point, it’s also been suggested that the smaller model may get the optical image stabilisation (OIS) currently limited to the iPhone 6/6s Plus.

A claimed photo of the camera module for the 4.7-inch iPhone has four slots around it, similar to those...

Twitter: An update on our efforts to combat violent...

Twitter’s blog:

Earlier this year, we announced we had suspended more than 125,000 accounts since mid-2015 for violating our longtime prohibition on violent threats and the promotion of terrorism and shared the steps we are taking as a company to combat this content. Since that announcement, the world has witnessed a further wave of deadly, abhorrent terror attacks across the globe. We strongly condemn these acts and remain committed to eliminating the promotion of violence or terrorism on our platform.

While our work is not done, today we are announcing that we have suspended an additional 235,000 accounts for violating our policies related to promotion of terrorism in the six months since our February 2016 post. This brings our overall number of suspensions to 360,000 since the middle of 2015. As noted by numerous third parties, our efforts continue to drive meaningful results, including a significant shift in this type of activity off of Twitter.

Sprint, T-Mobile offer revamped data plans ahead of...

Say what you want about the open market, at least it spurs competition.

Following Wednesday’s announcement as to changes to its mobile plans, wireless carriers T-Mobile and Sprint have announced new “unlimited” plans of their own.

T-Mobile has replaced all its plans with a single one called T-Mobile One.

The Mobile One plan apparent offers the following:

It’s 100% unlimited and comes with unlimited talk and text and unlimited 4G LTE smartphone data – including unlimited standard definition video – all on America’s fastest 4G LTE network. And, it’s available at a great price: just $40 per line for a family of four.

The fine print has the $40 per line rate as being applicable only if you’re buying four lines for $160 a month. Otherwise,...

Rumor: Next-gen Apple Watch to feature GPS, other...

The next-gen Apple Watch may still be somewhat dependent on the iPhone.

Sources have stated that Apple is planning to launch a next-gen Apple Watch this fall with integrated GPS and improvements to health tracking.

Apple shipped its first watch in April 2015, hoping for a new blockbuster product amid slowing iPhone sales, which contribute almost 60 percent of revenue. While the company shipped 1.6 million watches from April to June, that was less than half as many as during the same period in 2015, according to IDC.

Since its inception, wireless network carriers have been urging Apple to create an Apple Watch variant that can connect to data networks without the aid of the iPhone, thereby untethering it. Apple had been in talks this year with...

Taiwanese supply-chain kicks back on Apple’s demands...

Apple has a fierce reputation for driving a hard bargain with its component suppliers, using its size and status to demand ultra-competitive pricing. But according to Digitimes, suppliers in Taiwan are starting to resist demands for ever-greater discounts.

Apple is said to have asked downstream part and component suppliers […] to reduce their quotes for iPhone 7 devices by as much as 20% even though order volumes for new phones are reportedly 30% lower than those placed a year earlier. Major downstream suppliers, notably Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and associated companies under the Foxconn Group, have replied Apple that they could not be able to accept orders without reasonable profits at this time.

The two sides each appear to be bringing persuasive arguments to the table …

CrashPlan makes backing up easy, inexpensive

Be honest now: do you back up the data on your Mac? I know a LOT of folks who don't; they're asking for disaster. If you need a simple way to save your data — aside from or, better yet, in addition to Apple's Time Machine feature in Mac OS X — check out CrashPlan from Code 42.

It's a solid online backup service because it offers unlimited storage space (you read that right) and lets you upload files of any size. Setting up CrashPlan is a breeze and can be implemented in three easy steps.

Speaking of "three," Code 42 has three different ways of providing backup. You have the option to back up to local drives and computers, offsite drives and computers or online to CrashPlan Central. You can combine all three, which is what I recommend.

Code 42 addresses data security and privacy concerns by employing a multi-layered security model that includes transmission security, account security (access), password security, encryption security and secure messaging. On the...

You’ll get a charge out of these Ravpower products

Ravpower makes — as you might guess from the company’s name— charging and battery products. It’s released two that will be of interest to Mac users, especially those of us who own 12-inch MacBooks.

Ravpower’s $15.99 10400mAh Portable Power Bank boasts a 3.5A output that lets you quickly charge tablets and smartphones at the same time. I use it to charge my iPhone 6s Plus and 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The Portable Power Bank’s 2A input takes less time (almost 50%) to charge itself compared to traditional 1A chargers.

iSmart charging technology on both ports automatically detects and delivers the optimal charging current to match connected devices. For example, it delivers a 1A charging out for phones that have 1A charging input. The Portable Power Bank’s 10400 mAh capacity can, for example, charge an iPhone 6s Plus three to four times and an iPad mini once before you...

The Australian banks have been denied permission to act as a monopolistic cartel in the country, preventing them from negotiating collectively with Apple over Apple Pay terms for the time being as reported by Reuters. Australian banks are resisting adoption of Apple’s mobile payment solution (available in iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s), referring to hefty fees and loss of customer control.

Apple says that the banks are being anti-competitive by blocking the introduction of innovative payment technologies like Apple Pay. The banks want to force Apple to open up the NFC chip to third-party developers, which Apple says would cripple the security standards of its platform.

Is Donald Trump Actually Trying to Win?

Nate Silver, “Trump Is Doubling Down on a Losing Strategy”:

So it’s not surprising that Trump has undertaken a major shakeup
of his campaign, hiring Bannon and promoting the pollster
Kellyanne Conway. Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort has effectively
been demoted. But rather than make a much-expected “pivot” toward
general election voters — as Manafort had reportedly been pushing
for — the new plan is to “let Trump be Trump,” doubling down on
the strategies that Trump used to win the nomination, including an
emphasis on nationalism, populism and “brutal fights with
Clinton”. […]

If you trust the polls, this seems like a fundamental strategic
error. Trump is running worse than Mitt Romney among almost all
demographic groups; white men without a college degree are the
most prominent exception. But there aren’t...

An anonymous reader writes: The research firm Gartner has crunched some numbers and found that Android and iOS accounted for a record 99.1% worldwide market share in the second calendar quarter of 2016, which is compared to 96.8% in the year-ago period. What some may view as even more shocking is that Android accounted for 86.2% of the market share in the second quarter, up from 82.2% a year ago. Meanwhile, iOS lost some ground as it dropped to 12.9% market share from 14.6% in the year-ago period. It's no surprise that Windows and BlackBerry have been losing market share. They dropped to 0.6% and 0.1% market share worldwide respectively. Just six years ago, BlackBerry and Symbian operating systems were industry leaders. Now, they're industry losers. Which third-party operating system has what it takes to take on the establishment?

Uber to Begin Testing Self-Driving Cars in Pittsburgh

Max Chafkin, reporting for Bloomberg:

Near the end of 2014, Uber co-founder and Chief Executive Officer
Travis Kalanick flew to Pittsburgh on a mission: to hire dozens of
the world’s experts in autonomous vehicles. The city is home to
Carnegie Mellon University’s robotics department, which has
produced many of the biggest names in the newly hot field.

That’s a bit of a whitewashing. What happened is that Uber approached Carnegie Melon to create a “strategic partnership”. Uber’s strategy, it turned out, was to identify CMU’s best engineers and hire them away. As I wrote at the time, their “partnership” was like that between a fox and a henhouse.

The goal: to replace Uber’s more than 1 million human drivers with
robot drivers — as...

As someone who used to be heavily into jailbreaking, I’ve seen quite a few interesting and noteworthy tweaks come across my desk. Coincidence or not, Apple has mirrored the functionality of several tweaks over the years, adopting them as stock iOS features.

Needless to say, after seven or eight years of jailbreaking, it takes a lot to impress me, but that’s exactly what developer Elias Limneos was able to do. In fact, his new tweak, entitled AnsweringMachine, looked so intriguing that it convinced me to jailbreak my iPhone just to take it for a test drive.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple's plans to put cellular modems in the next version of the Apple Watch have been put on hold because of concerns about battery life. While Apple is still reportedly "studying lower-power cellular data chips" for inclusion in future generations, the next watch will still rely on your iPhone for its data connection.

That said, the report indicates that Apple does plan to ship GPS functionality in the new Apple Watch. This will be of particular ...

Roadblocks for new Apple Watch

The source of the delay is that current cellular chips consume too much battery life, reducing the product’s effectiveness and limiting user appeal, according to three of the people. Apple has begun studying lower-power cellular data chips for future smartwatch generations.

This is an incredibly difficult problem, but anything that negatively affects battery life will be a non-starter for a lot of users. Most days, I have plenty of battery life remaining when I go to bed, but I wouldn’t want to be in a situation where I was running out of power early in the day.

Store no more: Apple retail stores drop the ‘Store’...

Apple is making a slight branding change to its retail business, dropping the "Store" when referring to its Apple Store locations, according to MacRumors. Apple has already made the change online, and all of its store pages now refer to stores by names like "Apple Union Square" or "Apple Green Hills.”

MacRumors says it’s a change that appears to have started rolling out with the launch of the newer Apple stores such as the Union Square location (pictured) in San Francisco. Apple has always referred to that store as just Apple Union Square, and over the course of the last few days, the company has updated all of its retail store webpages to remove the "Store" branding, the article adds.

Apple has 488 retail stores in 21 countries and an online store available in 39 countries.

‘Bloomberg’: the Apple Watch 2 will feature GPS...

In July the Canalys research group forecast that 7.5 million smart watches with cellular connectivity — including a second generation Apple Watch — will ship in 2016, rising to 53.6 million in 2020. However, Apple “has hit roadblocks in making major changes that would connect its Watch to cellular networks and make it less dependent on the iPhone,” reports Bloomberg, quoting unnamed “people with knowledge of the matter.”

Apple has almost certainly planned to add cellular capabilities to the next-generation watch so that it doesn't require an accompanying iPhone. A Wall Street Journal report noted that the company “is working on adding cell-network connectivity and a faster processor to its next-generation Watch, according to people...

AT&T Mobile Share Advantage mimics T-Mobile,...

With AT&T’s Mobile Share Advantage, the telecom giant follows a new trend: Customers who switch to this new shared mobile plan (available August 21) will be spared bandwidth overage fees. Instead, the firm said, after available bandwidth is used up, its Mobile Share Advantage customers will be throttled to 128Kbps for the rest of the current billing cycle.

The Mobile Share plans pool bandwith among devices that can include smartphones, feature phones, tablets, gaming devices, wearables, laptops, hotspots, and other hardware. A monthly charge per device is paired with a charge for a tier of bandwidth.

Why this matters: AT&T joins T-Mobile and Sprint among the big four U.S. carriers in shifting to throttling instead of causing customers to rack up fees at $10 per gigabyte above plan totals. That’s good news for consumers, though it’ll be interesting to see whether they’ll tolerate throttling or break down and buy more bandwidth, sending more...

The ‘Apple Store’ is now just ‘Apple,’ but you...

Been to your local Apple Store lately? You probably noticed that it’s much more than a place that sells stuff. There are Geniuses there to help you with your Mac problems, and in the bigger stores, there are training sessions and youth programs. Mostly, people never buy a thing and just hang out, using the iPads, Macs, and the free internet access. Some people stay there all day, and that’s fine with Apple, as long as you don’t stink up the joint.

The Apple Store is much more than a store, and that’s probably why Apple decided to drop the “Store” from the name, according to a report by MacRumors. Now it’s just “Apple,” plus the name of the location to differentiate each store. For example, in Orlando, Florida, the two Apple stores are known as...

Twitter adds a quality filter setting

Last year we began testing a quality filter setting and we’re now rolling out a feature for everyone. When turned on, the filter can improve the quality of Tweets you see by using a variety of signals, such as account origin and behavior. Turning it on filters lower-quality content, like duplicate Tweets or content that appears to be automated, from your notifications and other parts of your Twitter experience. It does not filter content from people you follow or accounts you’ve recently interacted with – and depending on your preferences, you can turn it on or off in your notifications settings.

Twitter certainly has a lot of work to do, but anything that can help my feed is welcome.

Parallels Desktop 12 for Mac supports macOS Sierra...

As much as we don’t want to admit it, sometimes we need to use software that (gulp) isn’t available for the Mac. To keep you on the cutting edge of virtualization, Parallels on Thursday announced Parallels Desktop 12 for Mac, with support for the forthcoming macOS Sierra.

Plus, the company’s brand-new Parallels Toolbox app is a set of 20-plus tools and utilities for performing tasks like password-protecting files, recording a screencast, and downloading online videos. These tools, which are easily accessed from the menu bar, are available in all editions of Parallels Desktop 12, but if you don’t need the virtualization, you can get Parallels Toolbox on its own for $10 per year, with a 14-day free trial available starting August 23. The company says that it plans to add more tools to the toolbox every few months.

T-Mobile shifts to unlimited plans in the latest bid...

T-Mobile is hoping to make a another splash by ditching traditional smartphone plans in favor of one, unlimited offer.

Called T-Mobile One, the new plan charges $70 per month for the first line, $50 per month for a second, and then $20 for additional lines (stopping with eight). The plan includes unlimited talk, text, and 4G LTE data.

Of course, there are caveats buried in the fine print. T-Mobile says video playback is limited to 480p, the same speed as you’d get with Binge On. Tethering is capped at 2G speeds, which makes it essentially worthless for all but emergency connectivity. To get around the video limitation you’ll need to pay $25 per month extra per line. It’ll cost you $15 for any month in which you want to add on 5GB of tethering.
