External Link: Large Electronics Banned on Some...

The United States and United Kingdom have banned nearly all electronics larger than a phone from flights originating from several African and Middle Eastern countries. The ban will include laptops, tablets, electronic book readers, and cameras. A U.S. Department of Homeland Security official told the BBC that the ban was based on “evaluated intelligence,” likely related to reports that Al Qaeda in the Arabian Penninsula is trying to build bombs with little or no metal content to target commercial aircraft.

Apple's new Clips app is like a simplified...

Apple's latest iOS app is designed to help iPhone and iPad users get social with videos—though it isn't a social network itself. The company's new Clips app lets you add filters, emoji, and animated text to short videos. Think of it like a mashup of Snapchat and iMovie.

The videos can be one clip or multiple clips. Apple says the new app will make it quick and easy to create multi-clip videos “without timelines, tracks or complicated editing tools.” Like other apps, you touch and hold a button to shoot live video or add photos, then you can add filters, speech bubbles, emoji and other items afterward. There are also stock music options, animated backgrounds, and text.

Apple iPad is a Faster, Cheaper iPad Air 2

Say good-bye to the iPad Air, it's just the iPad now. From a report on CNET: Apple announced on Tuesday morning that it will be dropping the price of the 9.7-inch iPad by $70. The tablet's A8X processor will be getting an upgrade too, jumping over to the A9 chip used in the iPad Pro. The upgrade will replace the iPad Air 2, but the iPad Mini 4 will live on, starting at $399. The updated pricing will start on Friday, at $329 for the 32GB model and $459 for the 32GB WiFi with cellular service model. It's Apple's cheapest iPad, after the company decided to replace the iPad Mini 2, which started at $269. Although Apple's iPad is leading the tablet market, it's still a tumbling one as demand takes a decline thanks to people holding onto their tablets longer.

Apple's new iPad lineup slashes prices, the...

While we’re still waiting for a fresh iPad with barely-there bezels to make an appearance, Apple has returned to its roots with a new 9.7-inch model simply called iPad. And if you had previously balked at buying an iPad Air 2 because the price was too high, you might want to take notice.

Apple hasn’t technically added a new model to the iPad lineup, but it has bolstered the low end. Gone is the aging iPad Air 2 (as well as the whole Air branding), and in its place is a new model that looks exactly the same, with a 9.7-inch retina screen, Touch ID, 32GB or 128GB of storage, and the same color choices (silver...

Maybe I had my hopes too high, but today’s Apple announcements disappointed. A new 9.7-inch iPad. A (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. A new Clips app for iOS devices. All well and good — but underwhelming.

Where are the new iPad Pros? Where are the new iMacs? Why is Clips iOS only and not available for macOS? On the bright side, my credit card can remain in my wallet.

Guess we’ll just have to hope that my AWT compadre, Steve, is right and that Apple plans an April 4 special event at its new Apple Park headquarters. However, April 4 is less than two weeks away, so chances are increasing that, if such an event is coming, it will be held later in the month.

Apple has dropped the 32GB iPad mini 4 from its store and reduced the price of the 128GB model to $399. This is the second change to the device’s storage since its initial launch in 2015. Last year Apple did away with the 16GB and 64GB versions of the device and adjusted the pricing. Apple just made upgrading to an iPhone 7 a philanthropic decision by adding a red special edition to the lineup. The new red aluminum finish, which is available to order for both iPhone 7 and 7 Plus in-store and online on March 24, is a fundraising effort for the Global Fund. Apple will contribute a portion of red iPhone sales to the fight against AIDS and HIV.

The two new red iPhones will come in 128GB and 256GB storage variations and start at $749 in the U.S. Apple will sell the special editions in more than 40 countries by the end of March, with Brazil, Chile, Colombia, India, and Turkey to come in April. If you live in the U.S., U.K., or China and are part of the iPhone Upgrade Program, you’ll be able to snag an unlocked red iPhone with AppleCare+. In the U.S., the 128GB iPhone 7 will start at $37 a month with the ability to upgrade every year.

Apple has debuted Clips, a new app that allows iPhone and iPad users to create “expressive videos.” It lets you combine video clips, photos and music into videos to share with friends through the Messages app, or on Instagram, Facebook and other social networks.

Clips also introduces Live Titles, a feature that lets users create animated captions and titles using just their voice. Effects including comic book filters, speech bubbles, shapes and full-screen animated posters.

Apple

Apple quietly announced via press release this morning that it would not be replacing any of its top-end iPads, just its two-year-old midrange iPad Air 2. Patent report: shape-changing iOS screens, wireless...

Future iPhones and iPads may have screens that can dynamically change their shape. Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,600,070) for an “user interface having changeable topography.”

According to the patent, an iOS device would have a flexible display with a portion that would raise or lower depending on user interaction. Portions, or nodes, on the display could raise to offer the tactile feel of buttons, keys, even a scroll wheel.

Here’s Apple’s summary of the invention: “The user interface can have a shape changeable surface that can selectively alter according to an input so as to provide changeable topography of the user interface. The surface can include individual nodes that can raise above or lower below the initial surface.

“Alternatively, the surface can include a shape changeable material that can change the shape of portions thereof into discrete shapes above or below the initial surface. Alternatively, the surface can include...

Apple announces new $329 9.7-inch iPad, replaces...

The Apple Store is back up and Apple has just announced a new cheaper iPad, going on sale Friday for $329. The product replaces the iPad Air 2 in the lineup and is simply called ‘iPad’, available in three colors with 32 GB storage.

The $329 iPad features older internal components to enable the lower price point, featuring an Apple A9 chip although the 9.7-inch Retina display is brighter. It does not support Apple Pencil or include a Smart Connector like the ‘iPad Pro’ line. Apple has also increased the storage capacity on iPad mini …

Technologist Lou Miranda points out new golden age...

It’s an article that ran roughly nine months ago, prior to the release of iOS 10, but it makes some good points.

In the article, technologist and author Lou Miranda points out that the iPad Pro was handicapped by the software available at the time, namely iOS 9. Upon its initial introduction, the original iPhone had great software, but was handicapped by slow hardware.

Miranda then offers the following very relevant points:

Apps can only be as powerful as the operating system they’re running on, and iOS 9 is limited by its support for very old devices with very slow CPUs.

The key here is that iOS can only get as powerful as the slowest hardware that it supports.

Miranda points out that, as of now, we’re entering a golden age for mobile computers, thereby allowing the iOS to start peaking what it can do. The same argument can also be made for the Apple Watch and watchOS, which means there will be next to no limitations as to what the device can...

The fatal flaw in Apple’s Magic keyboard and mouse

Apple’s Magic keyboard and mouse don’t support multiple Macs.

Like many of you, I have a home office setup with a monitor, speakers keyboard and mouse. When I need to get some work done, I plug my MacBook into power, monitor, speakers and I’m off the races. I prefer wireless peripherals because it’s two less cables to plug in.

The problem is that Apple’s latest keyboard (MLA22LL/A) and mouse (MLA02LL/A) took a huge step backwards in functionality because they don’t support multiple Macs. That’s right, you can’t switch between Macs without have to re-pair Apple’s “Magic” peripherals – every time. This defeats the purpose of having wireless peripherals!

I’ve used every incarnation of the Apple’s Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and...

Apple may have something to learn from secretive...

Duan Yongping may have figured out how to beat Apple at its own game in the Chinese marketplace.

The reclusive billionaire founded both Opposition and Vivo, the twin smartphone brands that dealt the world’s largest company a stinging defeat in China last year. Once derided as cheap iPhone knockoffs, they leapfrogged the rankings and shoved Apple Inc. out of the top three in 2016 — when iPhone shipments fell in China for the first time.

Jongping stated that he was able to beat Apple in the region given that Apple didn’t adapt to local competition. Oppo and Vivo employed tactics Apple was reluctant to match, such as cheaper devices with high-end features, for fear of jeopardizing its winning formula elsewhere, Duan said.

“Apple couldn’t beat us in China because even they have flaws,” the 56-year-old electronics mogul said. “They’re maybe too stubborn sometimes. They made a lot of great things, like their operating system, but we surpass them in other areas.”...

New Drobo 5N2 adds Ethernet port-bonding, upgraded...

Drobo has been on a roll over the past two years, adding 7 new products to its line of storage appliances in that time. Today, Drobo released the Drobo 5N2 NAS, billed as the fastest 5-bay Drobo NAS yet. At $499 for an "empty" device that can be filled with a mixture of 3.5-inch HDDs or SSDs, the Drobo 5N2 offers a bump up in performance for connected home users, media professionals, and small businesses.

Image showing paired 1Gbps Ethernet ports, internal battery-backed cache

The device comes with two 1Gbps Ethernet ports that can be bonded for twice the throughput, also acting as redundant ports in the case of a router failure. The processor in the device has been upgraded to provide increased speed and throughput as well. The 5N2 can handle a 64TB volume size, and the device can be set up to create a smaller backup volume for use with Time Machine or other backup solutions.

Like the other recent Drobo...

Apple has come under fire in New Zealand after it was revealed that it had paid no tax whatsoever in the country for the past decade, despite selling more than NZ$4.2B ($2.96B) worth of products in the country. The NZ Herald said that the company’s tax arrangements had been criticized by parties across the political spectrum.

Green Party co-leader James Shaw said Apple was not paying its fair share. “It is absolutely extraordinary that they are able to get away with paying zero tax in this country. I really like Apple products – they’re incredibly innovative – but it looks like their tax department is even more innovative than their product designers,” Shaw said …

Science fiction fans should download the COMET TV...

If you’re a fan of science fiction (good, bad, and somewhere in between), you should download the COMET TV app for the fourth generation Apple TV. Some of the content is good, while some is incredibly cheesy, in a it’s-so-bad-I-can’t-stop- watching way—but, hey, it’s free.

COMET TV is an American digital broadcast television network owned by the Sinclair Television Group subsidiary of the Sinclair Broadcast Group and operated by the MGM Television division of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The network focuses on science fiction with some supernatural, horror, adventure and fantasy series and films, sourced mainly from the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film and TV library.

In addition to the app, COMET TV will continue its broadcast offerings to customers in over 100 markets as well as online.

COMET TV’s app included live playback of the network’s broadcast feed with an integrated program schedule along with information on the...

A transparent Mac within the decade? Maybe

I'm not sure we'll ever see this on a Mac, but Microsoft and Jinha Lee, a MIT graduate working at Samsung on TV interfaces, developed a prototype of a "transparent" computer that lets you reach "inside" and "touch" digital content.

Lee told the BBC that allowing folks to interact with machines in the same way they do with solid objects could make computing much more intuitive. In fact, he thinks transparent computers will come into general use within a decade.

The SpaceTop 3D system consists of a transparent LED display with built-in cameras that track the user's gestures and eye movements. It consists of a clear-glass display that allows input using voice control, touchless motions and eye-tracking.

You place your hands behind the screen to scroll or type just as you would with a regular computer. However, you can also raise your hands up to grab and manipulate the virtual 3D elements.

Buzz Aldrin in hologram form, a zero-gravity VR...

Every March, downtown Austin transforms into a bustling hub filled with the latest, art, tech, music, and film, taking on an almost “Spring Break” like vibe as out-of-towners flock to the Texas capital to take it all in. South by Southwest is a conference unlike any other—it’s less of a launchpad for new products, and more of an “ideas” show that brings people from various fields together to talk about what comes next.

One question we get all the time is, “What is SXSW even about?” What isn’t it about, really? By day, representatives from some of the biggest companies in the world (like Google, Apple, and Sony) come to speak and show off their most bonkers prototypes, just for fun. By night, they hire bands to come play at their pop-up space and host events. Startups arrange demos, enter contests, and give out business cards and free app downloads in hopes of becoming the next Twitter. Tech-centric art installations pop up all over town, showing how the varying...

How to monitor your kids' Nintendo Switch...

Nintendo’s new Switch offers the best of both worlds when it comes to gaming hardware. It’s a home device that you can easily drop into a dock and play HD games on your television, but it’s also a portable system that can be played anywhere you are, or even propped up with a kickstand for on-the-go multiplayer showdowns.

However, if you’re a parent, that sort of approach adds another layer of difficulty if you’re concerned about screen time limits, or want to keep your kids away from mature content or online communication. If you can’t rely on the hardware being played, let alone stored in a single place, how will you keep an eye on how it’s being used?

As scheduled on its system status page, the Apple Store is now down for maintenance. Whilst it is still unclear if the downtime is merely for backend server upgrades, many people are expecting Apple to launch at least one new product when the website is available again — as usually happens when the store goes down. DoorDash is putting a small fleet of six-wheeled delivery robots into action for the first time in Redwood City, California following weeks of tests. The robots, built by a company called Starship Technologies, are about the size of a golden retriever and roll around sidewalks with relative ease. They’ll be used to lug food from restaurants to customers on short-distance orders, spanning anywhere from one to two miles.

This is starting on Thursday. I think it’s cool as hell—I’m going to give it a try for sure.
