Sponsoring Daring Fireball, Early 2018 Edition

There’s a part of me that loathes posting self-promotional stuff here on Daring Fireball. There’s another part of me that wants to sell ads and keep this thing afloat, and knows that I sell more ads when I periodically mention that there are ads for sale.

Right now there are three ways to sponsor my work:

  1. Weekly sponsorships. I just updated the public-facing schedule, and there are a few openings in the coming weeks. And, this very week remains open (long story short: last-minute cancellation). Given that it’s already Wednesday, the remainder of this week could be yours for a substantial discount. Get in touch.

These weekly sponsorships have been the number one source of revenue for Daring Fireball ever since I started selling them back in 2007. They’ve succeeded, I think, because they make everyone happy. They generate good money....

FBI, CIA, and NSA: Don't Use Huawei Phones

The heads of six top U.S. intelligence agencies told the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday they would not advise Americans to use products or services from Chinese smartphone maker Huawei. "The six -- including the heads of the CIA, FBI, NSA and the director of national intelligence -- first expressed their distrust of Apple-rival Huawei and fellow Chinese telecom company ZTE in reference to public servants and state agencies," reports CNBC. From the report: "We're deeply concerned about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign governments that don't share our values to gain positions of power inside our telecommunications networks," FBI Director Chris Wray testified. "That provides the capacity to exert pressure or control over our telecommunications infrastructure," Wray said. "It provides the capacity to maliciously modify or steal information. And it provides the capacity to conduct undetected espionage."

In a response, Huawei said...

Apple's HomePod Speakers Leave White Marks on...

Apple's new smart speakers can discolour wooden surfaces, leaving a white mark where they are placed, the firm has acknowledged. From a report: The US company has suggested that owners may have to re-oil furniture if the HomePod is moved. The device went on sale last week after having been delayed from its original 2017 release date. Apple told Pocket-lint that it was "not unusual" for speakers with silicone bases to leave a "mild mark." But the gadget review site told the BBC it had never seen anything like this problem. The website's founder, Stuart Miles, told the BBC that a speaker left a mark on his kitchen worktop within 20 minutes.

Barclays says Apple is working on 3D scanning tech...

Boy, the analysts have been busy today. In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — Barclays in London, says Apple and its partners are "working hard on a world-facing solution" capable of scanning surroundings in 3D, similar to what the TrueDepth system does for a user's face.

The British multinational bank and financial services company claims that development is ongoing, and lots of details must be hammered out before it’s included in any 2019 iPhones. Barclays believes Apple "remains fully committed" to dive into that aspect in other hardware offerings beyond just the iPhone.

As the TrueDepth sensor hardware expands to other Apple devices, the firm expects that Apple will open up ARKit even more over time, to encompass the expansion of the technology. At the 2017...

Apple confirms HomePod can leave white ring on wood...

An unhappy discovery after we placed a HomePod on an oiled butcher-block countertop and later on a wooden side table was that it left a defined white ring in the surface. Other reviewers and owners (such as Pocket-lint, and folks on Twitter) have reported the same issue, which an Apple representative has confirmed. Apple says “the marks can improve over several days after the speaker is removed from the wood surface,” and if they don’t fade on their own, you can basically just go refinish the furniture—the exact advice Apple gave in an email to Wirecutter was to “try cleaning the surface with the manufacturer’s suggested oiling method.”

I didn’t have my HomePod placed on an oiled wood surface, so I never noticed this. Still, it doesn’t seem like this is something you would want to have happen when placing a speaker in your home.

Apple’s HomePod: Paying $350 for a speaker that says...

Jeff Dunn

What is this thing?

That, in essence, is the question most onlookers have asked about Apple’s HomePod speaker since its unveiling last summer. The natural inclination is to compare it to smart speakers like the Amazon Echo or Google Home. It’s a speaker with a talking assistant in it, the thinking goes. Apple just wants a piece of that growing pie.

Apple's Software 'Problem' and '...

According to media reports, Apple is planning to postpone some new features for iOS and macOS this year to focus on improving reliability, stability and performance of the existing versions. Steven Sinofsky, a former President of the Windows Division, shared his insights into the significance of this development: Several important points are conflated in the broad discussion about Apple and software: Quality, pace of change, features "versus" quality, and innovation. Scanning the landscape, it is important to recognize that in total the work Apple has been doing across hardware, software, services, and even AI/ML, in total -- is breathtaking and unprecedented in scope, scale, and quality. Few companies have done so much for so long with such a high level of consistency. This all goes back to the bet on the NeXT code base and move to Intel for Mac OS plus the iPod, which began the journey to where we are today. [...] What is lost in all of this recent discussion is the nuance...

Report: publishers jump on Slack, then pitch big...

When news publishers have a big story these days,” their editors jump on Slack and pitch it to an unlikely partner: Apple,” according to The Information. The tech giant has built a “small but powerful news team that is making Apple a key distribution outlet for news publishers,” the article adds.

From a pitch received via a dedicated Slack channel, Apple’s editorial team of about a dozen staffers in the U.S. decides what story gets featured at the top of the app or to the left of the home screen. That can yield a flood of traffic for publishers.

However, some publishers feel that there’s not a consistent, predictable stream of readers through the service. Instead, major traffic is driven by Apple's selection of "Spotlight" or "Top Stories" with little attention given to non-breaking news.

The Apple News service  is...

In a note to clients — as noted by MacRumors — Barclays analysts Andrew Gardiner, Hiral Patel, Joseph Wolf, and Blayne Curtis said Apple will launch three new iPhone models this year with a second-generation TrueDepth camera system, which will potentially be reduced in size.

The TrueDepth camera system is required for Face ID on the iPhone X. A smaller notch would please the critics who say it’s too darn big on the iPhone X. However, as MacRumors notes, an earlier rumor suggested the notch won't be reduced in size until 2019 or later, and it's generally expected that 2018 iPhones will look virtually identical to the iPhone X.

Spiceworks has announced the results of a new survey that examines how businesses are securing their data and devices on corporate and public Wi-Fi networks. It revealed the perceived Wi-Fi risks associated with traditional computing devices is much lower, particularly among Apple products.

Only about 19% of IT professionals believe Apple laptops, tablets, and smartphones are very to extremely vulnerable to Wi-Fi based attacks. This compares to 30% who believe Windows and Android devices are very to extremely vulnerable.

The Spiceworks survey show that IT professionals consider IoT [Internet of Things] devices the most vulnerable to Wi-Fi-based attacks, yet 50% of organizations have IoT devices connected to their Wi-Fi network. The findings indicate that although organizations are taking steps to increase Wi-Fi security, many IT professionals aren't confident in their ability to keep corporate data secure on IoT...

The Skydio R1 drone has been years in the making but it is here now! Our sister site, Electrek, first wrote about it when one of the senior engineers left Tesla to join the then start-up drone company.

What makes the R1 drone unlike any other drone you’ve seen, is its advanced obstacle avoidance system, the Skydio Autonomy Engine. With 12 cameras, the R1 creates a 3D map of its surroundings and tries to predict the movements of its subject, i.e. a skier, runner, biker, up to 4 seconds into the future so that it can follow the subject while keeping it in the center of the frame and avoiding obstacles at the same time. How to connect your Apple TV to HomePod, use HomePod...

Terrific article from iMore’s Lory Gil. Long story short:

  • On Apple TV, go to home screen (this next step only works from the home screen).
  • On Apple TV remote, hold down pause button for 3 seconds or so.
  • When AirPlay menu appears, select your HomePod. This will route Apple TV audio to HomePod.

Now go play a movie. The audio should be coming out of your HomePod. If you are watching in front of your TV, this isn’t really ideal, but if you are moving around, perhaps working in the kitchen with a long view of the TV screen, this can be terrifically convenient.

Now that audio is piped into your HomePod, you can say things to HomePod Siri like:

  • Volume 60 (that sets the volume to 60%)
  • Pause (pauses the video playback)
  • Go back 20 seconds

Good stuff.

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that Apple will ship 100 million iPhones in the second half of 2018.

He thinks the built of those as coming from a new 6.1-inch, LCD smartphone that will be priced between $699 and $799. The analyst is unsure if this model will replace both the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, though he thinks it’s possible. However, since it will have an LCD screen, it will be less expensive than the OLED iPhone X.

Kuo thinks Apple will introduce at least three new smartphones this year, all of which will sport Face ID and ditch the home button. In addition to a successor to the iPhone X and the LCD model, Apple is also purportedly planning an iPhone X variant with a 6.5-inch OLED display.

There has been much debate about the audio quality of the HomePod. The majority of reviews have praised the speaker for its sound quality (if not for its smarts), but there have been some dissenting voices.

Some audiophiles have been dismissive of HomePod – often, it seems, without having listened to it – but others have been impressed. And a new set of tests using professional-grade equipment found that the speaker fully lives up to the claims...

How to listen to music on an HomePod

If there’s one thing the HomePod is great for, it’s listening to music. Here are your options on how to do this with Apple’s wireless speaker.

  • To hear something you’ll like, say “Hey Siri, play some music.” Apple Music learns your taste and uses it to choose which songs to play for you. To help Apple Music learn what you like, say “Hey Siri, I like this” when you hear a song you’d like to add to your preferences.
  • How to listen to a song. Got some music in mind? Just ask. Say, for example, “Hey Siri, play the theme from La La Land” or “Hey Siri, play Lamar Kendrick’s newest album." You can also ask for songs and playlists from your iTunes library. To hear the same song as interpreted by other artists, say “Hey Siri, play the other version.”
  • To listen by artist, genre, activity, or mood, ask for a specific artist, or a genre of music such as Latin jazz. You can also ask for the vibe you want. For example, say “Hey Siri, play some party music,” or get...

Security researchers locate vulnerability in Skype...

This might be something that Microsoft wants to look into and fix.

The current version of Skype feature a security flaw that could let an attacker gain control of Mac, Windows, and Linux computers. The company has stated that it isn’t planning on fixing the flaw, at least for now, because it amounts to rewriting the entire app update installer.

The security flaw is in the app update installer, and if exploited, could let attackers gain administrator level access even if the victim is logged into their computer as a standard user. From there, they can copy and delete files, install other apps, access personal information, and more.

Microsoft was made aware of the security hole in September of 2017 and has been able to reproduce it on their own computers according to security researcher Stefan Kanthak:

The engineers provided me with an update on this case. They’ve reviewed the code and were able to reproduce the issue, but have determined that the fix...

KGI: Apple estimated to sell 100 million units of...

KGI continues to double-down on its claims on what the 2018 iPhone lineup will comprise. The 6.1-inch LCD iPhone will apparently resemble the iPhone X with a similar full-screen design but at a more accessible price for customers; the analyst expects this new iPhone to be priced to replace iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, as cheap as $699.

The LCD 6.1-inch iPhone will use slightly less premium components, such as an aluminium frame instead of stainless steel. Nevertheless, given that it looks like a top-end iPhone in style, KGI believes the lower entry point will make it Apple’s most popular 2018 device and see total sales around 100 million units.

Here’s how the game is described: “The Fall Part 2: Unbound is a hybrid of haunting metroidvania exploration merged with brain teasing point-and-click adventure puzzles and a healthy dose of chilling hard sci-fi. This sequel picks up right where its predecessor left off as we follow the exploits of A.R.I.D., a rogue AI who’s rewritten its protocol to follow one rule: “save myself”. The new parameters of A.R.I.D.’s programming have allowed her the ability to possess new hosts including a posh, reality-divorced Butler, a sexy service Companion, and a mysterious combat drone known as One.’

At its annual meeting (held today), two Apple shareholder proposals weren't approved. Also, CEO Tim Cook downplayed a suggestion that the company might issue a special dividend to shareholders with some of the $285 billion in cash that the company is now able to bring back from overseas.

A proxy access measure sought reconsideration of the company's rules for shareholder nomination of directors, that currently say a group of no more than 20 shareholders have to hold a 3% stake to nominate. That measure failed with 67.8% against. Meanwhile, a call for a human rights committee that would report its oversight to the public failed with 94.4% opposed.

Shareholders did approve four company-proposed measures, including a required "say on pay" vote for executive compensation.
