Review: Audience The ONE Loudspeaker

We've reviewed plenty of "premium" and "flagship" products over the years. As you venture into the world of really high-end audio, however, you start to encounter a new term: "statement." Usually, a statement product is where manufacturers put their most cutting-edge technology; we see speakers with multiple drivers in wild-looking cabinets and with even wilder price tags. Audience, a small California-based speaker and cable company, makes the opposite kind of statement. Sure, they can build you one of those huge speakers with 16 or 32 drivers that costs into the five figures, but that's not their most interesting product. Audience's statement speaker, it seems, is The ONE. It features just one driver and, yes, it makes a statement.{/exp:char_limit}

macOS High Sierra's App Store System...

A bug report submitted on Open Radar this week reveals a security vulnerability in the current version of macOS High Sierra that allows the App Store menu in System Preferences to be unlocked with any password. From a report: MacRumors is able to reproduce the issue on macOS High Sierra version 10.13.2, the latest public release of the operating system, on an administrator-level account by following these steps: 1. Click on System Preferences. 2. Click on App Store. 3. Click on the padlock icon to lock it if necessary. 4. Click on the padlock icon again. 5. Enter your username and any password. 6. Click Unlock. As mentioned in the radar, System Preferences does not accept an incorrect password with a non-administrator account. We also weren't able to unlock any other System Preferences menus with an incorrect password. We're unable to reproduce the issue on the third or fourth betas of macOS High Sierra 10.13.3, suggesting Apple has fixed the security vulnerability in the upcoming...

External Link: Apple Planning More iOS Parental...

Responding to concerns from two large shareholders (who hold approximately $2 billion in Apple stock) over the effect mobile devices have on the mental health of children, Apple has announced that it’s planning better parental control features in future versions of iOS. Apple already offers better parental controls than most platforms, but the company said in a statement, “Apple has always looked out for kids, and we work hard to create powerful products that inspire, entertain, and educate children while also helping parents protect them online.” That may not be sufficient for the investors, who also want Apple to create an expert advisory committee, partner with outside researchers, help educate parents about Apple’s tools, and assign a high-level executive to monitor the issue and publish annual progress reports.

External Link: Mickey Mouse’s Debut Film Could...

Before the 1970s, U.S. copyright terms lasted for only 56 years, but over time Congress has extended that to 95 years — the last extension being in 1998. Those extensions have been pushed primarily by Hollywood, with the joke being that Disney will do whatever it takes to keep “Steamboat Willie” — the first film featuring its signature Mickey Mouse character — from falling into the public domain. According to an article in Ars Technica, it appears that Hollywood is now giving up on further extensions due to greater public awareness of copyright issues. So on 1 January 2019, every work of art published in 1923 will fall into the public domain, something that has been delayed for over 40 years. And unless something changes, “Steamboat Willie” will move into the public domain in 2024, though Disney would still own the trademark to Mickey Mouse.

Yet another macOS High Sierra bug: Unlock App Store...

Less than two months ago, Apple users discovered a bug in macOS that allowed anyone to log in with root access. Apple apologized and fixed it quickly, but now users on Open Radar have found a similar (but far less severe) macOS password bug.

If you're running macOS High Sierra, try this:

  1. Open System Preferences.
  2. Click on App Store.
  3. If the padlock is unlocked, click to lock it.
  4. Click the padlock to unlock it.
  5. In the prompt, enter your username and any password.

The App Store preferences pane should unlock. We tried it on a new iMac and MacBook Pro, both with macOS 10.13.2, and it worked.

macOS High Sierra bug unlocks App Store Systems...

A bug report submitted on Open Radar — and, as noted by MacRumors — reveals a security vulnerability in the current version of macOS High Sierra that allows the App Store menu in System Preferences to be unlocked with any password.

This only appears to be when logged in as a local admin. The security vulnerability means that anyone with administrator-level access to your Mac could unlock the App Store preferences and enable or disable settings to automatically install macOS updates, app updates, system data files, and even security updates that would fix a bug like this one. However, as noted by 9to5Mac, the security flaw is present in macOS 10.13.2 which is the current public version of macOS High Sierra, but resolved in the latest beta...

India makes it easier for Apple to open stores in...

India has made it easier for brands such as Apple to open stores in the country. The Indian government announced Wednesday that global single-brand retailers will no longer need its permission to own and operate stores in the country, reports CNN Money.

Foreign companies previously needed government approval to own more than 49% of an Indian retail operation, leading many to partner with Indian companies or rely on local distributors and franchises. India's retail market presents a compelling opportunity. It is currently worth around $600 billion, according to a 2017 report by consultancy PwC. By 2020, Indian shoppers could be spending $1 trillion year, it added.

Getting a foothold in India has been a challenge for Apple. The company has opened its retail stores in a number of countries around the world, but not there. It looks like that will...

In a true “passthrough” sense, a phone stacked on top of a charging battery pack will see the phone charge first, then the pack afterwards, making for a very convenient setup to have on your desk or bedside table. Chinese iCloud customers have been notified that Apple will transfer operations of its cloud storage service to the local firm Guizhou on the Cloud Big Data (GCBD) starting next month. Apple announced the partnership with GCBD last year and claims the new iCloud operations will help the company comply with Chinese regulations. As of February 28, Apple will start the transfer of Chinese iCloud data to its new data center in Guizhou, where it will be managed by GCBD.

This means that the physical location of Chinese iCloud customers' data will change, but customers shouldn't see any differences on their end of their iCloud accounts. In Apple's message sent to mainland Chinese customers, the company says the new operations setup will "enable us to...

Senator Wants Apple To Answer Questions on Slowing...

The chairman of a U.S. Senate committee overseeing business issues asked Apple to answer questions about its disclosure that it slowed older iPhones with flagging batteries, Reuters reported on Wednesday, citing a letter. From the report: The California-based company apologized over the issue on Dec. 28, cut battery replacement costs and said it will change its software to show users whether their phone battery is good. Senator John Thune, a Republican who chairs the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, said in a Jan. 9 letter to Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook that "the large volume of consumer criticism leveled against the company in light of its admission suggests that there should have been better transparency."

Apple’s new iPhones were the top three best-selling smartphones in the US in November, says Kantar, despite the high price of the iPhone X. In contrast, Samsung’s flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, only managed 6th position.

Lana Del Rey says Radiohead suing her for copying “...

OK, this seems really clearcut to me, but judge for yourself.

My take: The chord structure seems identical, the production not so much. But there’s this one moment that really makes the case for me.

  • In the Radiohead video, jump to about 39 seconds in and listen to the phrase, “float like a feather”, with that bit of vocalization at the end of the word “feather”.

  • Now, in the Lana Del Rey video, jump to about 50 seconds in and listen to the phrase “my modern manifesto”. To me, I hear the same vocalization at the end of the word “manifesto”.

As I said, judge for yourself. But hard for me to believe Creep wasn’t an influence here.

Kantar: iOS is seeing mixed results when it comes to...

The latest smartphone operating system data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech reveals a mixed performance for iOS in the three months ending November 2017.

Despite new handset releases including the iPhone 8 and iPhone X, iOS share fell by 0.6 percentage points across the big five European markets to 23.9% and by 3.8 percentage points in the USA to 39.8%. In contrast, iOS performance in urban China continues to impress, gaining 4.6 percentage points over the same time period to give it a market share of almost 25%, adds the research group.

“On the surface Apple’s share figures for the three months to November struggle to impress, but taking into account the staged releases of the new iPhone 8 and iPhone X there are some strong performances,” says Dominic Sunnebo, global director for Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. “In Great Britain, Apple achieved its highest share in more than three years in the month of November...

U.S. government questions Apple about its handling...

Apple is facing new questions from U.S. government officials about its handling of “Batterygate”, reports The Wall Street Journal. On Tuesday, Sen. John Thune (R., S.D.), chairman of the Senate Commerce Committee, pressed Apple for answers to a series of questions about how the company decided to throttle back iPhone processing performance in phones with older batteries.

In a letter to CEO Tim Cook, a copy of which was viewed by the WSJ, Thune asked how Apple has tracked customer complaints of processing performance and if Apple has explored offering rebates to customers who paid full price for a battery replacement before the company offered discounted rates last month.

Also, a French prosecutor has launched a preliminary investigation of Apple over alleged deception and planned obsolescence of its products...

I’ve long been a big fan of Matias, a Canadian-based company that makes excellent third-party keyboards for Mac. In fact, I’ve been using its space gray wireless aluminum keyboard for over a year, and it’s been excellent.

Instead of continuing on the wireless route, yesterday during CES in Las Vegas, Matias added a new $99 wired aluminum keyboard to its repertoire. But this particular keyboard has a special trick up its sleeve — RGB lightning.  more…

Apple must pay $184 million to HMRC for addition...

Apple has to fork over $184 million to Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs for additional taxes, according to the Financial Times. The payment from Apple Europe came after HMRC conducted an "extensive audit" of the company's pre-2015 tax filings.

The department reports that “this payment of additional tax and interest reflects the company’s increased activity.” The tax bill is specifically targeted at Apple Europe, which provides various support, marketing, financial, and administrative services to “other group companies.”

HRMC says its audit found that Apple Europe wasn’t paid a fair value for services it offered to other Apple subsidiaries, creating an artificially lower taxable income. Apple’s payment covers several years all the way up to 2015.

Apple Watch to be able to control Whirlpool...

CNBC:

Whirlpool has said Apple Watch wearers will soon be able to remotely control their home appliances.

It would mean smart watch owners could change temperature settings on ovens, delay cycles on washers or check how long is left to run on a dryer.

When I first saw this, I compared it to the ability to use my Apple Watch to quickly bring up my profile/setup on a piece of gym equipment. This takes advantage of the security/identity features of the Apple Watch.

But thinking a bit more, I can see the value in using my Apple Watch to control an appliance. With an oven, you could tap a recipe, have the oven preheat to the right temperature without having to look it up. And checking the time remaining on a washer/dryer cycle, also useful.

Things like this make me realize just how much the Apple Watch is still in its infancy.

‘Variety’: Jimmy Iovine is NOT leaving Apple

Oops, never mind. Even though Billboard reported that Apple Music exec Jimmy Iovine will depart the tech giant in August, around the time his company shares have fully vested, apparently he’s not leaving. He told Variety that he’s committed to staying on the Apple team and helping the company get music streaming right.

“I am almost 65, have been with Apple for four years and in 2 1/2 years the [Apple Music] service has gotten to well over 30 million subscribers and Beats has continued its successful run,” he said. “But there’s still a lot more we’d like to do. I am committed to doing whatever Eddy [Cue], Tim [Cook] and Apple need me to do, to help wherever and...

Apple turning over its China cloud operations to a...

Apple will hand its China cloud operations over to a state-owned partner Guizhou-Cloud Big Data Industry Co. (GCBD) on Feb. 28, according to The Wall Street Journal.

GCBD was approved by People's Government of Guizhou Province in November, 2014, with registered capital of 235 million yuan. The company is sponsored by Guizhou Big Data Development Administration and supervised by the Board of Supervisors of Guizhou State-owned enterprises.

China law requires companies to store customer data collected in the region locally. With the handover, photos, documents and messages uploaded by Apple users throughout the country will be stored at a data center in the southwest province of Guizhou .

Chinese iCloud customers were notified of the change and had the option to keep using the service or deactivate it by the transfer date,...

Apple wants to improve dictation with Siri on its...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,865,280) for “structured dictation using intelligent automated assistants ” conversion that shows the company is eyeing ways to improve this functionality using Siri on its iOS and macOS devices.

Per the patent, systems and processes for structured dictation using intelligent automated assistants are provided. In one example process, a speech input representing a user request can be received. In addition, metadata associated with the speech input can be received.

A text string corresponding to the speech input can be determined. The process can determine whether to perform natural language processing on the text string and whether the metadata identifies one or more domains corresponding to the user request. In response to the determination that natural language processing is to be performed on the text string and that the metadata identifies one or more domains corresponding to the user request, natural language processing...
