Review: Belkin Pocket Power 5K Portable Power Bank

With users looking to squeeze as much battery life as possible out of their iPhones, external power packs have become almost as common of an accessory as cases and traditional chargers. Unfortunately, they've tended to lean to the more expensive side, so we're happy to see Belkin bucking the trend here with an ultra-portable power solution that provides a decent amount of juice and sells for only $30. {/exp:char_limit}

A HomeKit vulnerability in the current version of iOS 11.2 has been demonstrated to 9to5Mac that allows unauthorized control of accessories including smart locks and garage door openers. Our understanding is Apple has rolled out a server-side fix that now prevent unauthorized access from occurring while limiting some functionality, and an update to iOS 11.2 coming next week will restore that full functionality.

Best Buy is selling an 8TB external hard drive for $...

If you missed out on Best Buy's Black Friday deal on the WD Easystore 8TB external hard drive, you're in luck. Today it's one of the big box retailer's daily doorbusters, though its price tag of $140 isn't quite as cheap.

That's still a very good deal, however. While this Easystore drive is part of Western Digital's exclusive line for Best Buy, its equivalents at Amazon and other retailers are currently selling for about $45 more. This discount also undercuts last week's sale price of $150.

This drive comes with USB 3.0, which WD says allows transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second. As with other WD drives, it comes with WD Backup (the company's automated backup software) to keep all the files on your PC in more than one place.

Former Gliimpse founder Anil Sethi is leaving Apple's health tech division to found a new start-up called Ciitizen. He was named director of the team in 2016.

According to CNBC, he had taken some months off to help his sister Tania fight cancer, and promised her before she died on Sept. 11 that he would do something to help very sick patients. I enjoyed going through Apple’s tops of 2017 list.

But, it did remind me of one broken piece of Apple’s app-purchasing system, still unaddressed after all this time. To see it, you have to open the list on your Mac.

On your Mac, if you click on Apple’s top movie link, after a bit of shuffling, you’ll be taken to an iTunes page listing the top movies of the year. Click on a movie and you’ll be taken to that movie’s iTunes page so you can rent or buy.

Your Text Replacements in iOS and macOS now sync...

Christian Zibreg, iDownloadBlog:

Text Replacements, an often overlooked iOS and macOS feature that automatically expands custom text snippets into longer phrases or whole sentences as you’re typing, should no longer be plagued with the widely reported intermittent syncing issues.

As first noted by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, an Apple spokesperson told him back in September that an update that moves text replacement syncing to CloudKit was scheduled to roll out to iOS 11 and macOS 10.13 High Sierra users in the next month or so.

Brian Stucki, who first explained why Text Replacements didn’t sync reliably between iOS devices and Macs, has now confirmed in an update to his original post that snippet syncing now at long last works reliably across all devices running macOS High Sierra and iOS 11.

Nice to see this CloudKit progress.

3 top reasons people dump Android for iPhone

Jonny Evans, writing for Computerworld, on the top reasons switchers are switching to iPhone, as laid out by Creative Strategies. Though the title might seem click-baity, the logic is thoughtful.

A taste:

Today’s smartphone user may have subscriptions with multiple such services. They are also likely to own multiple devices, and that’s where the problem emerges. In contrast to competitors, Apple’s platforms are far better at syncing passwords, settings, images and other items between all your devices using the same Apple ID. You can even set up a new iPhone just by tapping it with your old one in iOS 11.

That kind of convenience makes it so much easier for consumers rapidly engaging in a multi-device, multiple-service, cross platform digital existence. This sync extends across to Apple’s Macs, of course.

Solid read.

The hidden player spurring a wave of cheap consumer...

Farhad Manjoo, New York Times:

On the surface, the camera doesn’t sound special. Like home internet cameras made by Nest or Netgear, the Wyze device can monitor an area for motion or sound. When it spots something, it begins recording a short clip that it stores online, for access on your phone or your computer.

But the WyzeCam has one groundbreaking feature that no rival can match. It is being sold for such an unbelievably low price — $20 — that it sent me tunneling into the global gadget industry to figure out how Wyze had done it. That, in turn, led to a revelation about the future of all kinds of products, from cameras to clothes.

And:

Nest’s and Netgear’s comparable indoor cameras sell for around $200 each, while Wyze’s device goes for $20 plus shipping if you buy directly from the company’s website.

And, most importantly:

Wyze did not create a home internet camera for a tenth of the price of rivals by skimping on quality. Though the...

Apple patent filing involves ‘detecting activity by...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20170347885) for “detecting activity by a wheelchair user.” It’s designed to help such folks keep track of their health and fitness activities using the Apple Watch and its Workout app.

The patent involves technology for collecting motion data of a user device located on an appendage of the user. Among other things it would track the energy expenditure of the user.

As noted in the patent filing, such activities involve repetitive motions of the arms. For example, pushing yourself in a wheelchair, rowing, push-ups and pull-ups, and assembly-line tasks may all involve repetition of a sequence of motions using the hands, arms, and wrists. An Apple Watch may be worn on the hand, wrist, or arm of the person performing the activity. Apple says it may be desirable to track activity by a wheelchair user for health, safety, or productivity reasons.

Of course, Apple files for — and is granted — lots of patents by the U.S. Patent...

Apple CEO Tim Cook places number five on the ‘Recode...

Apple CEO Tim Cook took the fifth spot in the Recode 100 list, which measures the publication’s choices for “the people in tech, business and media who mattered in 2017.”

Here’s what Recode has to say about Apple’s head honcho:

Tim Cook is succeeding at an impossible task: Following the greatest-ever product visionary as Apple’s CEO. Yet six years after his mentor Steve Jobs died, Apple is thriving. And Cook is growing into his prominence as one of the business world’s most increasingly vocal good-guy CEOs.

For Apple, 2017 was a return to growth. After sales declines in 2016, Apple has now posted four consecutive quarters of year-over-year revenue gains — and it’s accelerating.

And that doesn’t even include a single iPhone X, the new version of Apple’s most important product, which launched in November and our sister site The Verge calls “easily...

A look at several Case-Mate, Silk cases for the...

By Laura Darnell

I recently had the opportunity to try out several iPhone X cases from Case-Mate and Silk. There are simply too many to critique in detail, but here are my impressions.

The Casemate Opal purse case- great for when I’m going out and wearing a dress without pockets. Not so great for talking on the phone. Awkward to talk while holding a clutch to your head and cumbersome to hold while texting. Holds phone and cards securely.

The Karate Mother of Pearl ($50) securely holds the iPhone X in place. And it’s durable. I dropped my phone with no damage, but the case is super hard to remove.

The temperature changing Casemate Mood ($50) is a little silly, but holds the iPhone X well. Alas, none of these cases allowed me to use an induction charger.

The Silk Pureview ($15) with its “diamond” skin is one of my favorites...

Amazon Prime Video app arrives for tvOS, supports...

You’ve been hankering for it and it’s here.

Months after Apple CEO Tim Cook’s announcement of it back at WWDC in June, the Amazon Prime Video app for the Apple TV is here. The app, which is designed for tvOS, may not show up in a tvOS app store search, but can generally be located by searching for “Amazon” in the tvOS app store, selecting the Amazon Shopping app, and finding the new Prime Video app in the “More by this Developer” section at the bottom of the page.

The app requires a third-generation or later Apple TV device to install and run.

Amazon Prime Video joins a number of other big streaming services, including Netflix and Hulu, that have tvOS apps. Previously, any Amazon Prime Video content could only play on an Apple TV through AirPlay from another device.

This may open the door for Amazon to sell the Apple TV again on its retail website. Amazon hasn’t sold Apple TV since 2015 and recently CEO Jeff Bezos said that the only way Amazon would...

Apple Issues Security Updates for MacOS, iOS, TvOS,...

Catalin Cimpanu, writing for BleepingComputer: Over the course of the last four days, Apple has released updates to address security issues for several products, such as macOS High Sierra, Safari, watchOS, tvOS, and iOS. The most relevant security update is the one to macOS, as it also permanently fixes the bug that allowed attackers to access macOS root accounts without having to type a password. Apple issued a patch for the bug the next day after it was discovered, but because the patch was delivered as an out-of-band update that did not alter the macOS version number, when users from older macOS versions updated to 10.13.1 (the vulnerable version), the bug was still present. With today's update, the patch for the bug -- now known as "IAmRoot" (CVE-2017-13872) -- has received a permanent fix. All users who upgrade to macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 are safe.

No, Siri, John Travolta is not dead

Uh, someone needs to tell Siri that John Travolta isn’t dead. If you ask Apple’s personal digital assistant Hey Siri, how old is John Travolta,” you’ll be told that “John Travolta died January 3, 2009 at age 54,” as noted by Newsweek.

However, at 63, he’s alive and well. So why is Siri saying he’s deceased? As Newsweek notes, it’s possible that Siri is mixing up Travolta with his son, Jett, who died on January 2, 2009.

Prime Video catches Apple TV up with smart TVs, but...

With the release of Amazon Prime Video for Apple TV, there’s now one less reason to switch inputs on your TV if you’re looking for something to watch. Prime Video has long been on other set-top boxes and even comes built-in to modern TVs, so it’s great to see Amazon’s catalog of movies and TV shows available to stream directly on Apple TV. For me, there are still two reasons to switch between my Apple TV 4K and the built-in apps on my TV for the best experience…

Opinion: Living with Google Home Mini sparked my...

When Apple unveiled the HomePod this past June at WWDC 2017, I didn’t give it too much of my attention. As a design piece, it looked like something I’d be happy to put in my living room. As a product, I just wasn’t interested. Smart speakers in general have seemed like little more than a novelty to me, and I’ve resisted buying one… until now. Last week I welcomed a Google Home Mini into my life to see if it could change my mind. Here’s what I found…

Review: Ten One Design's new Mountie+ outshines...

A few years ago, accessory manufacturer Ten One Design came out with the Mountie, a small device that clamped onto the side of one device -- Mac, iPad, whatever... -- and allowed users to clamp another device like an iPhone onto the first device. While the idea is great, allowing a MacBook Pro user to use an iPad Pro as a "second screen", the original just didn't have the holding power to really make me feel confident that everything would stay attached. That problem is gone now with the advent of the new Mountie+ (US$34.95).

Mountie+. Photo ©2017 Steven Sande

The new Mountie+ uses a similar design to the old Mountie, with a pair of padded clamps -- one for each device -- and pads for each side that can be swapped out for a nice tight fit. The difference? There are TWO of those clamp sets and as you'd expect, it has much more grip -- a 2.6X...

Oracle’s cloak-and-dagger war with Google

The story that appeared in Quartz this November seemed shocking enough on its own: Google had quietly tracked the location of its Android users, even those who had turned off such monitoring on their smartphones.

But missing from the news site’s report was another eyebrow-raising detail: Some of its evidence, while accurate, appears to have been furnished by one of Google’s fiercest foes: Oracle.

Stress

Right there on the corner of Brannan and Fourth Streets, there is a billboard advertising some marijuana brand, saying “Hello marijuana, goodbye stress.” It got me thinking about stress and what is that is making people stressed out? Also, what does it say about people living in this tech town — are we so stressed, because of work?

I really enjoyed this article.

Apple: Learning with Privacy at Scale

Gaining insight into the overall user population is crucial to improving the user experience. The data needed to derive such insights is personal and sensitive, and must be kept private. In addition to privacy concerns, practical deployments of learning systems using this data must also consider resource overhead, computation costs, and communication costs. In this article, we give an overview of a system architecture that combines differential privacy and privacy best practices to learn from a user population.

A new article from Apple’s Machine Learning Journal, which includes a link to a PDF with in-depth equations and other details.

Mac: Epson Expression Photo HD Wide-format Printer

While most people have taken to social media to display their photos these days, there’s still something to be said for quality prints to hang on the wall or mail to loved ones, and Epson is betting there are still people out there who have a fondness for paper and ink. The company’s new Expression Photo HD XP-15000 Wide-format Printer is billed as a top-notch photo producer, able to print borderless photos as large as 13” x 19”. The device requires six different Claria Photo HD ink cartridges — including new red and gray inks — to produce its wide color gamut, and features a 200-sheet front tray and a 50-sheet rear specialty tray for media like cardstock. Like most newer printers the Expression Photo HD can be used wirelessly, and for more routine document printing the printer offers automatic two-sided printing in a fairly small footprint.

AWT TV Episode 30: December 5, 2017

Welcome to AWT TV, a weekly show featuring Steve Sande, Dennis Sellers and Marty Edwards of Apple World Today. Each week we'll discuss what's happened in the world of Apple, talk about new apps and accessories, maybe even have a demonstration or two of the latest software.

It's December, the month in which the wonderful holiday of Christmas takes place. Since gift-giving has become a part of the holiday tradition, tonight Marty and Steve talk about some gift ideas for the tech-oriented people in your life.

Steve starts out with a totally non-tech rant about the ineptitude of the American healthcare system with two stories...but we quickly get down to business.

Marty mentions the upgrade to tvOS 11.2, which helps with a problem that the Apple TV 4K had with wanting to "upscale" everything to 4K...which didn't always work out for the best. The update helps a lot.

Steve brings up WatchAir as his first gift idea. It's a digital TV antenna with smarts -- it...
