Latest Piper Jaffray teen survey shows iPhone and...

Chance Miller, 9to5Mac:

As it does towards the end of every year, Piper Jaffray today has released its Fall 2017 edition of “Taking Stock with Teens.” This survey aims to analyze what companies teen shoppers are most interested in, and every time, Apple is one of the top performers.

And:

This time around, 78 percent of teens surveyed claimed to own an iPhone, up from 76 percent during the last survey earlier this year, and 74 percent last year.

And:

The Apple Watch isn’t nearly as popular as the iPhone among teens, but it’s growing. Just 12 percent of respondents claimed to have an Apple Watch, with 17 percent saying they plan to purchase one within the next six months. Last time around, 13 percent of teens had purchase intent while 10 percent already owned an Apple Watch.

To be clear, that’s a move from 10% to 12% owning an Apple Watch, from 12% to 17% with intent to buy. Good growth.

A true all-day assistant: The compelling argument...

With the introduction of cellular connectivity in Apple Watch Series 3, it’s now more convenient than ever to leave your phone at home for quick trips and during workouts without consequence – for the most part. When you want to snap that quick photo or have a FaceTime video call, the Watch still won’t cut it. This is the one of the largest remaining friction points in a truly independent Apple Watch experience.

At first it might sound unnecessary, or even a little invasive to have a camera always on your wrist. However, Apple has been putting in place technologies over the last several years that may soon make a camera on the Apple Watch not just a reality, but an essential part of your day-to-day life. Let’s take a look at why now may finally be the right time for all of these pieces to come together.

The iOS 11.0.3 release notes also include a specific caution against “non-genuine replacement displays” emphasizing that “Apple-certified screen…

Tim Cook sits down with Vogue, talks AR, fashion and...

Vogue:

Imagine that you’re out to lunch, and in walks a woman wearing a terrific-looking coat. Who designed it? Did she buy it last season, or is it still on sale? Covertly, you give her coat a quick scan on your smartphone, find out it’s available on Farfetch, and moments later it’s on its way out for delivery.

According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, that future may not be far off. In a sit-down interview with Vogue, the leader of the world’s most valuable technology company said he is betting big on augmented reality (AR), which he believes will transform everything from runway shows to shopping. “I don’t think there is any sector or industry that will be untouched by AR,” he said.

And:

It will also take some time before we’ll be able to scan and identify other women’s coats on our phones. Cook says the company has no plans to build the giant database of clothes, shoes and other goods that would make it possible. But Apple does plan to support companies who...

Woz on stage at Carnegie Hall in Pittsburgh

From the Pittsburgh Press writeup:

New technologies are sometimes a selfish endeavor, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak told a crowded Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

He built the Apple II, the computer that made Apple a household name , because he wanted color in arcade games.

And:

“Steve made the iPhone, not for you and me. He made it for himself,” Wozniak said of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. “It had to be elegant and simple, which were design flaws.”

And:

Wozniak didn’t hold back on criticisms of Jobs. He said a 2015 movie about Jobs nailed the man’s personality. He put blame for the failures of the Apple III, the Lisa and other products on Jobs.

Read the rest of the article for more on this. While I’ve heard Woz hint at these things before, I’ve never heard of an interview in which he gets so specific on his feelings about Steve Jobs. This article gets into one specific anecdote, but from what I’ve heard, he did relate...

Apple granted patent for ‘intelligent blood pressure...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 20170293727) for a “user device” for “intelligent blood pressure monitoring.” The patent mentions Macs, iPhones, and iPads as the user device.

Apple’s Health app seems a likely candidate for software implementation. But whether this invention involves the use of an Apple Watch or a separate blood pressure monitor is less clear, though the latter seems unlikely.

Here’s Apple’s summary of the invention: “In some implementations, a user device can assist a user with intelligent blood pressure monitoring. For example, the user device can present notifications and/or reminders that prompt the user to take blood pressure measurements at a prescribed time or according to a prescribed schedule.

“The user device can automatically determine that the user should or should not take a blood pressure measurement based on the user's context and suggest an alternative time for taking the blood pressure measurement. For example, the...

Apple’s Irish data center finally wins approval

Apple has finally been given permission by Ireland's High Court to build a new data centre in Athenry, County Galway, reports Business Insider.

Justice Paul McDermott ruled that Apple should be granted permission to build the data centre on Ireland's west coast. Seán Kyne, Ireland's minister for community development, natural resources, and digital development, said it was "very positive news for Galway and the West of Ireland."

Apple planned to start building the data center on a 500-acre site before the end of 2015. However, it was delayed when unhappy Irish citizens lodged formal complaints with the Irish government. Complainants argued that the data centre would increase noise and light pollution, flooding, and traffic.

Apple, other tech giants: China regulations infringe...

U.S. industry groups representing Apple, IBM and other tech firms blame China’s rules on inbound investment for infringing the intellectual property rights of American companies, according to the South China Morning Post.

The groups spoke in a public hearing held in Washington to gather input for an ongoing trade investigation. Erin Ennis, senior vice-president of the U.S.-China Business Council, said that rules that required them to transfer technology to Chinese enterprises “as a condition to gain market access” might place “unreasonable and discriminatory burdens” on American commercial interests. He added that the “the ultimate goal” was to eliminate technology transfer requirements,

The event was the first hearing in support of U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer’s inquiry into alleged Chinese...

GN28K Aluminum UBS-C Hub adds expandability options...

QacQoc’s newest product, the GN28K Aluminum UBS-C Hub, is designed for 2016 and 2017MacBook Pros running macOS Sierra and High Sierra. I’m unfamiliar with the China-based company, but the hub provides some much-needed expandability options.

It can simultaneously transfer data and charging devices — to a point. It works with devices based on USB Power Delivery Specification (USB PD protocol), but it’s incompatible with devices based on the QC (Quick Charge 2.0/3.0) charging protocol.

The two competing quick charging methods out there are the proprietary Qualcomm Quick Charge and the USB Power Delivery from the USB-IF standards body. Qualcomm has a near-monopoly in the high-end smartphone SoC market, so nearly every high-end device supports Qualcomm Quick Charge.

Qualcomm SoCs don't really exist in the laptop market, so Type-C laptops from Apple, Google, and others use USB Power...

How to view 'Live Photos' in macOS High...

The Live Photos feature of recent iPhones is a lot of fun. It captures 1.5 seconds of movement surrounding a 12-megapixel still image (think the “moving newspaper" photos in the Harry Potter films). If you want to play the video portion of a Live Photo in macOS Sierra, here’s how:

  • Open the Photos app.
  • Open any album where a Live Photo is contained
  • Open any Live Photo by double-clicking on it.
  • Hover the mouse cursor over the Live Photo to play the video portion of the picture in Photos on Mac.

A Live Photo is signified by the little concentric circle and “Live” text in the corner of the picture.

(This how-to is based on my experiences and info on Apple's support pages — where the images sometimes come from.)

A dry look at the Absorbits Wet Phone Rescue Pouch

The old Nokia phone after a day in the Absorbits pouch.

iPhones have only had decent water resistance in the past few years, and before then the recommended practice for trying to save phones that had taken a plunge was to use rice... Yes, putting the iPhone into a baggie full of rice was supposed to help soak up the water and dry out the phone, and it worked...sometimes. A better idea is to use silica gel, the stuff that usually comes in small packets put in boxes and pill bottles to keep water from damaging sensitive materials. Absorbits ($9.99, Amazon Associates link) is a pouch/carrying case for the iPhone and any other small personal electronics that has "padding" that's actually silica gel made to soak up water in emergencies.

Review: Bezalel Omnia Wireless Car Charger +...

While the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus now include wireless charging capabilities, it's fair to say that this feature may not be enough to convince users of older iPhones to trade up to the latest model — especially considering the otherwise narrow gap between the iPhone 7 and new iPhone 8 models. Hence, we're convinced there's still a market right now for wireless charging solutions for older iPhone models, and this is even more true for accessories that provide utility beyond simply charging, as is the case with Bezalel's new Omnia Wireless Car Charger — a vent-mounted car dock that's designed to work with the company's own Latitude Case to provide an easy way to keep your iPhone juiced up on the go without having to fuss around with cables. {/exp:char_limit}

Rumor: Apple is working on foldable iPhones with LG...

Apple has reportedly started working on a foldable iPhone with LG Display, not Samsung Display, the OLED supplier at present.

According to The Bell — as noted by The Investor — LG Display recently created a task force to develop a foldable OLED screen for an upcoming iPhone model, while its parts-making sister firm LG Innotek has also setup a team dedicated to developing the rigid flexible printed circuit board, more widely called RFPCB.

But don’t expect a foldable iPhone anytime soon. According to The Bell, panel production wouldn’t start until 2020.

In 2016, was granted a patent (number 9,504,170) for “flexible display devices” that hints at future “foldable” iPhones — and perhaps iPads, as well. In the patent filing, the company says that “it would be desirable to use flexible display technology to provide improved electronic devices.”

Jony Ive’s creativity pales compared to Apple’s App...

Jony Ive, Apple's chief design officer, might want to take a lesson in creativity from Apple's lawyers.

The iPhone is beautiful, and we all know that. But Apple's response to an App Store antitrust lawsuit brought by consumers may take your breath away. Cupertino argues that it should not have to face a class-action lawsuit that accuses the iPhone maker of overcharging consumers for iOS apps in the Apple App Store (a monopolistic environment, the suit claims). The core argument in Apple's defense is so creative that the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked President Donald Trump's administration for its views on whether Apple's position before the Supreme Court is correct.

The antitrust ABCs

But before we get to how Ive is being one-upped on the creativity...

External Link: Tech Pioneers Fear a Smartphone...

The Guardian has published a compelling article about how some technologists who helped usher in the age of smartphones and social media are concerned that technology addiction is making us distracted, dumber, and easier to manipulate. Justin Rosenstein created Facebook’s Like button and helped build Google’s Gchat, but he now takes extreme measures to limit his online activity, even having an assistant manage his phone. “If we only care about profit maximisation, we will go rapidly into dystopia,” Rosenstein said. The article profiles other tech pioneers who share similar sentiments, including Loren Brichter, the Apple alum who came up with “pull to refresh” for Tweetie in 2009. But if wealthy tech workers struggle to pull away from the lure of technology, even with their awareness of the corporate motivations behind addictive technologies, what hope does the average user have?

Apple is in talks to lease Hackman Capital Partners’ 85,000-square-foot creative office development at 5500 W. The website for the property lists triple net rent at $3.75 a square foot a month, which would value the lease at $3.83 million a year. If completed, the lease could be Apple’s second with Hackman. There are rumors that the company is in talks to move its original content division to Hackman-owned Culver Studios. Hackman also developed the headquarters of Beats By Dre, a company Apple now owns, in Culver City. The developer sold that property to IDS for $110 million in...

AWT TV Episode 24: October 10, 2017

Welcome to AWT TV, a weekly show featuring Steve Sande, Dennis Sellers and Marty Edwards of Apple World Today. Each week we'll discuss what's happened in the world of Apple, talk about new apps and accessories, maybe even have a demonstration or two of the latest software.

Tonight's show was rather fun, talking about the "Apple Tax" and why we're perfectly happy to pay it, demoing a macOS drone simulator, and more.

The discussion about the "Apple Tax" came from an article written by Marty on October 10, 2017 in which he talked about the benefits that Apple owners get from allegedly paying more for the products. Many other products are also pricey, but you don't get the amazing customer service that goes along with Apple products. Steve brought up an article on...
