CES 2018: The fascinating world of strange knockoff...

Every year at the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the world’s largest technology brands take over the city to show off some of the biggest and most impressive innovations that will shape the coming year. Walking the show floor feels like touring a monument to optimism – a vision of the future where everything is faster, easier, and more intelligent. Wander away from the noise and excitement of the main hallways, and you’ll find yourself in a gadget funhouse, where reality begins to distort and surprises lurk around every corner. Here awaits the world of unusual Apple accessories and product clones.

Review: Fiio F9 Pro In-Ear Headphones

This year, we've reviewed samples from most of Fiio's broad product offering — DACs, amplifiers, and dedicated audio players. The company has almost always had a small selection of in-ear monitors on offer as well, but those IEMs have never been what Fiio is really known for. That's about to change; Fiio has introduced a new line of IEMs — the F series — that show Fiio's commitment to becoming a real competitor in this space. Today we're looking at the top-of-the-line F9 Pro, a triple-driver hybrid IEM.{/exp:char_limit}

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials are continuing to voice their displeasure with Apple's approach to iPhone security, with one FBI official reportedly calling the company "jerks" and an "evil genius" this week.

There are some brand looks you recognize at a glance, and Marshall is one of those. Black casing with rounded edges. Black speaker grille with gold surround. And, of course, the brandname in gold script across the front.

Marshall speakers and amps are as closely associated with rock bands as the electric guitar. From buskers on the street with a single unit to banks of speakers on the stage of big band concerts, it’s hard to picture the scene without that Marshall name.

So when the company offered a range of AirPlay speakers, it would have been impossible to resist trying one out …

CES – Advanced S2000 Dynamic On-stage In-ear...

LAS VEGAS – Kickstarter darling Advanced Sound has just released a set of universal fit, dynamic driver earphones built for musicians to use as in-ear monitors for just US$24.99 per pair. The Advanced S2000 features a single 10mm dynamic in each earpiece, and they’re designed to loop the cable over the ear to stay in place on stage. The low price point is intentional: they know that musicians wind up getting their in-ear cables pulled or earphones crushed in a gig bag, and their thought is to make them inexpensive enough that one doesn’t worry about replacement costs. The sound? I haven’t tried them on stage, but I did try them in my hotel room and on the show floor. They have a great sound with a high-mid boost that actually matches what I prefer for on-stage. That lift gives vocals a little more presence, and...

Apple files for a patent related to its upcoming...

Apple has filed for a patent dubbed “electronic device with wireless charging and battery heating.” It seems to involve its upcoming AirPower product, which is sometime this year.

The AirPower will be able to charge a Qi-compatible iPhone, an Apple Watch, and a pair of AirPods (in a special wireless charging case) at the same time regardless of where they're placed on the pad. AirPower hasn't been priced yet, but guesses have it costing anywhere from $150 - $200.

Apple’s patent filing involves a wireless power transmitting device may transmit wireless power signals to a wireless power receiving electronic device (iPhones, Apple Watches, AirPods, etc.). The electronic device may have a coil that receives the transmitted wireless power signals and may have a power receiving circuit that rectifies the received wireless power signals to produce a corresponding direct-current voltage signal.

The direct-current signal may be used to power circuitry in the...

iPhone X: The annoyance of surprise screenshots

Jeremy Burge:

Why am I now always taking screenshots by accident? Two things:

The volume buttons are directly opposite the Lock button (aka “Sleep/Wake” button), and
The combination for screenshot has changed. On phones with a home button, the iOS combination has always been Lock and Home buttons but is now Lock and Volume Up on iPhone X (due to lack of home button)

Trying to hold the phone with a stable grip while pushing the lock button means my thumb is resting on the lock button, and my index finger is on the volume up button.

Design is hard.

The position/function of the external iPhone buttons has evolved over time, and with each new generation, it seems there’s some design compromise that emerges.

In this case, putting buttons on opposite sides of the device mean that pressing one will require an equal and opposite press on the opposing button. And for the iPhone X, this results in a screenshot.

Deadline:

In a competitive situation, Apple has landed the hot TV package See with a straight-to-series order. FBI Calls Apple 'Jerks' and 'Evil...

troublemaker_23 shares a report from iTWire: A forensics expert from the FBI has lashed out at Apple, calling the company's security team a bunch of "jerks" and "evil geniuses" for making it more difficult to circumvent the encryption on its devices. Stephen Flatley told the International Conference on Cyber Security in New York on Wednesday that one example of the way that Apple had made it harder for him and his colleagues to break into the iPhone was by recently making the password guesses slower, with a change in hash iterations from 10,000 to 10,000,000. A report on the Motherboard website said Flatley explained that this change meant that the speed at which one could brute-force passwords went from 45 attempts a second to one every 18 seconds. "Your crack time just went from two days to two months," he was quoted as saying. "At what point is it just trying to one up things and at what point is it to thwart law enforcement? Apple is pretty good at evil genius stuff," Flatley...

What the iPhone, iPad, and iOS need in 2018

2017 was a pretty great year for iOS. A whole lot of my wish-list items for iPhone and iPad got checked off. And yet, like a kid who got a bike under the tree and still immediately begins assembling a birthday wish list, it’s my job as a columnist to immediately ask Apple what it’s done for iOS lately. Ungrateful, I know, but life goes on: Here’s what I hope to see from Apple in the world of iOS in 2018.

More iPhones

The iPhone X was the banner product of 2017, but it’s still just a first take on a whole new generation of iPhone hardware. In 2018 I’d like to see an upgrade to the iPhone X, sure—ideally retaining the iPhone X name, because who wants to buy the iPhone XI? But I’d also like to see an iPhone X Plus, with a huge OLED screen. Personally, the iPhone X...

This week the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is in full swing in Las Vegas. There are too many announcements to list each one in a separate article, so here are some of today’s highlights:

Matias has released RGB-Backlit versions of its Wired Aluminum Keyboard for Mac and PC. With modern Apple-inspired styling, it’s available in Silver and Space Gray aluminum for Mac, and in Black Aluminum for PC.

Satechi has debuted its new Type-C 75W Multiport Travel Charger. The charger features four charging ports, including USB-C and Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, compatible with the newest generation of iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro and MacBook, as well as, Nintendo Switch, Samsung Galaxy S8 and more.

IOGEAR has announced the expansion of its industry-leading portfolio of mobile connectivity products with the launch of the...

Matias offers wired Mac keyboard following Apple’s...

Much to a number of users’ chagrin, Apple discontinued its wired keyboard last June, introducing a new version of the Magic Keyboard with a number pad to take its place. Where Apple left its market open, Matias has introduced a wired keyboard similar to Apple’s discontinued model with RGB backlighting.

Matias’ keyboards feature an extremely similar look and feel to Apple’s designs, the keys and materials all near-replicas of Apple’s keyboard. The only notable addition is a slider on the back that allows users to rotate through a variety of colors, and a function key that lets you adjust brightness by holding it down and pressing a number on the keypad.

Matias presently offers a white-and-silver model as well as a space gray version. For Windows users, there’s also an entirely black aluminum version with Windows function keys.

Not surprisingly, Matias sells both a wired and wireless version of its keyboards. The new RGB wired keyboard is available today for...

FBI director Christopher Wray calls for weakened...

Because apparently several experts telling you something is mathematically impossible doesn’t mean a whole lot.

Newly minted FBI director Christopher Wray has renewed calls to weaken or bypass encryption. Wray, citing more than 7,700 locked devices that have proven inaccessible to the FBI, has stated that encryption can be weakened without putting users at risks.

Among the sources telling him this would be unlikely, if not impossible, include mathematicians, encryption experts, and even the U.S.’s own intelligence services. The mathematicians and encryption experts have stated that backdoors, if available, would be exploited by all. Wray’s comments pick up where previous FBI director James Comey left off.

General Michael Hayden, former Director of both the NSA and the CIA, as well as the former Director of National Intelligence, has led the intelligence services in opposing Wray’s point of view. Hayden has spoken publicly on the subject, going so far as to...

Apple servers currently signing older iOS updates,...

Apple is currently signing iOS 10 version updates for many devices including iPhone 5, iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 models as shown by IPSW.me. Whilst the upgrade servers remain in this state, users are able to downgrade from iOS 11 by restoring their firmware to iOS 10.2 and 10.3.

It is not clear why Apple is suddenly allowing this to happen and there is a good chance it is a bug. If you want to downgrade your OS, get in quick before Apple reverts back to signing iOS 11.2 and later only.

First Alert, known best for its home safety devices, has been a relatively early adopter of support for new Apple protocols. The company previously introduced the Onelink Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Detector with support for HomeKit, and this year at CES 2018 is showing off a new product that combines the safety features of a smart smoke detector with the home convenience of an AirPlay 2 speaker.

We stopped at First Alert’s booth to see (and hear) the new accessory in person.

ScreenShield — a Third-Party SDK That Somehow Allows...

From the announcement of a new version of Confide, a “confidential messenger” app:

ScreenShield is a patent-pending technology that allows you to
view an app’s content on your screen but prevents you from taking
a screenshot of it. If you try to take a screenshot on Confide,
you will now simply capture a blank screen¹. ScreenShield also
protects against other forms of screen capture, including iOS 11
screen recording, AirPlay screen mirroring, QuickTime screen
recording as well as taking screenshots from the app switcher or
by using Xcode.

We initially developed ScreenShield for Confide, but quickly
realized that it could be used in a large number of apps — far
more than we could build ourselves. That’s why we created
ScreenShieldKit — to...

Apple To Transfer Chinese iCloud Operations To...

Apple's iCloud services in mainland China will be operated by a Chinese company from next month, the tech giant has confirmed, though Apple will still have access to all data stored on iCloud. The company said it had made the move to comply with the country's cloud computing regulations. iCloud accounts registered outside of China are not affected. BBC reports: The Chinese cyber security rules, introduced in July last year, include a requirement for companies to store all data within China. The firm, Guizhou on the Cloud Big Data (GCBD), is owned by the Guizhou provincial government in southern China. Guizhou is where Apple opened a $1 billion data center last year to meet the regulations. iCloud data will be transferred from February 28, Apple said. Customers living in mainland China who did not want to use iCloud operated by GCBD were given the option to terminate their account. Apple said the "partnership" with GCBD would allow it to "improve the speed and reliability of our...

Apple World Today News Update: January 10, 2018

It's Hump Day™! As we reach the middle of this week, there's not a lot of news that we haven't covered elsewhere, but we still have two kinda creepy stories for you.

  • Remember the "FruitFly" malware that was infecting Macs last year? The hacker behind the attack has been indicted for not only his malware attacks and stealing data, but for child pornography as well
  • A second iPhone fire has occurred, this time in Spain. The uptick in incidents seems to be tied to the increase in iPhone battery replacements taking place due to Apple's discounted replacement plan
