Consumer Reports ranks iPhone 8/8 Plus over iPhone X...

Consumer Reports has published its 2017 iPhone comparison and in it the publication has somehow rated the iPhone X below the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, but there’s certainly no need to trade down if you’re an iPhone X owner. While there’s nothing wrong with either iPhone 8 model, CR points to differences in battery life and durability testing for its ranking that may not apply to real world usage.

‘Consumer Reports’ ranks the iPhone 8/8 Plus higher...

As noted by MacRumors, Consumer Reports has posted its final iPhone X testing results, and, though listing it among the top 10 smartphones, ranks it below the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.

Consumer Reports says the iPhone X didn’t beat out the iPhone 8 or the iPhone 8 Plus because of its poor performance on a durability test. Both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus better survived a tumble test for emulating real-world drops and fumbles of about 2.5 feet that can result in device damage, despite the fact that all three devices have glass bodies.

“If not for the damage in that durability test, the iPhone X would have come in ahead of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus,” says Richard Fisco, head of smartphone testing at CR. The iPhone X is an innovative device with a fantastic camera and beautiful...

Review: Bragi Dash Pro Wireless Earphones

In February 2016, we reviewed the Bragi Dash, one of the first — if not the first — "true wireless" headphones. It was an extremely ambitious product, though that ambition may have partly been its downfall — despite a long-delayed launch, Bragi seemed to have over-promised on features and, sadly, the Dash's core functionality was lacking. Despite the Dash's extremely thoughtful and sharp design, it was plagued by connection issues that were only partially addressed in future firmware updates. Bragi hasn't given up; instead, they're back with an upgraded version of the Dash — the Dash Pro — that promises better basic functionality and the introduction of many of the features that were part of its original vision for this product. Though the Dash Pro still isn't perfect, it has come a long way. {/exp:char_limit}

External Link: iPhone X Reveals the Pros and Cons of...

The most radical interface change on the iPhone X is the disappearance of the familiar Home button, which frees up a lot of space for a larger display. But the loss of the Home button means that Apple had to replace its functions with a variety of new gestures. Raluca Budiu of the Nielsen Norman Group explores the interface challenges that gestures face, including discoverability, memorabilty, and swipe ambiguity. Although Budiu identifies some areas where Apple’s approach with the iPhone X stumbles, she praises the Home line as a reminder of the iPhone X’s new gestural needs. If you have or are getting an iPhone X, it’s worth reading this piece to understand how it changes the iPhone user experience.

Apple begins selling unlocked & SIM-free iPhone...

SIM-free means, in part, that you won’t get a carrier SIM card. You’ll still need to get one. Keep that (to me, a tiny bit of a hassle) in mind.

UPDATE: From the comments:

You can get a SIM card for free from T-Mobile, and it takes seconds to install.

Meanwhile, that SIM-free iPhone—unlike the GSM models— is fully compatible with all networks including CDMA. More importantly, it has the Qualcomm chip, which means it will provide about 30% better wireless performance than Intel-equipped models in terms of data speeds, signal reception, voice quality, and battery life. And due to all of the above advantages, the SIM-free model will also provide a significantly higher resale value.

This is the iPhone variant everyone should buy.

Duly noted.

Apple’s HomePod isn’t about Siri, but rather the...

Daniel Eran Dilger, AppleInsider:

Rather than being the phenomenal, exciting new product category launch that pundits love to praise, the Alexa-powered Echo is Amazon’s salvaged booby prize for failing in smartphones: a few million units sold at low margin, versus the tens of millions of smartphones other Android licensees have been able to sell (or the hundreds of millions of high-margin iPhones Apple has been selling each year).

Ouch. But I agree with the premise. The Echo is a highly successful pivot. If Amazon’s 2014 Fire phone had caught on, it’s not clear that they would have gone down the Echo path.

Echo and related Alexa-based smart speakers are really “smart mics” for listening to commands. Amazon’s retail background works to leverage this to take online orders from Alexa users, but its original goal in hardware was a mobile phone with a camera, display and mic all working together to identify potential products to sell, not just a simple voice...

Apple magnetic stand invention would allow two iPads...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,839,147) for a magnetic stand with a removable tripod for the iPad. The stand is configured to rigidly hold a portion of the tablet in place, to shield the magnetic field from adversely affecting nearby devices susceptible to strong magnetic fields, and to allow two iPads to work together.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that tablets are increasing used in a wide variety of applications. The tech giant says “a number of manufacturers” have tried unsuccessfully to produce a way for conveniently mounting such a device. Not surprisingly, Apple thinks it can.

Apple’s invention would allow an iPad to be used by a photographer or videographer for reviewing photos or video as they’re taken. A wireless transmitter can send data between the camera and the tablet device via a Wi-Fi signal, Bluetooth protocol, or even through an alternative signal received by a wireless receiver attached to the tablet device.

In this way a...

Android Oreo: An iOS user’s review

Matt Birchler, in the introduction to a week long review of the Pixel 2 running Android Oreo:

I have been using the Google Pixel 2, which is the latest and greatest Android phone out there. I chose this phone for my experiment because I wanted to leave no room for my conclusions to be colored by a bad OEM skin on top of Android or by a lower quality phone as my comparisons to iOS should be as fair as possible. Since I wanted to review Oreo, a Pixel was my only option in October, and thankfully that Pixel has top of the like specs and the best Android camera out there. This is Android how Google intended it.

And, then, this TL;DR conclusion:

Android has grown up considerably over the last decade. It’s no longer a complete disaster of a user experience, and some elements have actually surpassed what Apple is doing with iOS. Notifications are much better than they are on iOS and Google Assistant is more accurate and more helpful than Siri. that said, there are a...

Kantar: later iPhone X release hurts Apple’s...

The latest smartphone operating system data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech says that in the three months ending in October, iOS share fell in key markets, “making clear the impact of the flagship iPhone X not being available to buy in the month of October.”

As Windows continued to drop in share, Android was able to gain 4.3 percentage points in the big five European markets, 8.2% in the U.S. and 7.5% in Japan, adds the research group. Urban China remained a bright spot for Apple, with its share edging up 0.5% in the latest three months to reach 17.4%.

“It was somewhat inevitable that Apple would see volume share fall once we had a full comparative month of sales taking into account the non-flagship iPhone 8 vs. the flagship iPhone 7 from 2016,” says Dominic Sunnebo, Global Business Unit Director for Kantar Worldpanel ComTech. “This decrease is significant and puts pressure on the iPhone X to perform....

Apple will either refurbish the device for resale or recycle its materials. The tech giant has handled recycling of smart watches before, but this is the first time it’s offered gift cards. Gift cards are available for original Apple Watch models, Apple Watch Series 1 models, and Apple Watch Series 2 models, with Apple offering between $50 and $175 depending on device.

Apple wins its ‘iPad vs Mi Pad’ trademark case...

The European Union General Court has ruled that Xiaomi, privately owned Chinese electronics and software company headquartered in Beijing, can’t trademark the name of its “Mi Pad” tablet (pictured) because the name is too similar to Apple’s iPad.

“The dissimilarity between the signs at issue, resulting from the presence of the additional letter ‘m’ at the beginning of ”Mi Pad“, is not sufficient to offset the high degree of visual and phonetic similarity between the two signs,” the Court said in a statement.

Xiaomi, world's fifth largest smartphone maker, filed its trademark application in 2014 and Apple filed a complaint that the Intellectual Property Office sided with last year. Now the EU’s second-highest court agrees. Xiaomi can still appeal the decision at the Court of Justice, the EU’s highest court.

It packs a plethora of ports: three USB 3.1 Type-C Ports (Data Only / No Video); two USB 3.1 Type-A Ports (Data Only); one USB 3.1 Type-A Port (Data and 1.5A High Speed Charging); one USB Type-C Passthrough Port; one HDMI port; and one Ethernet, facilitating connection of a large range of devices to the Mac laptop. There’s also a Micro SD Card Slot and a two-way audio port. Plus, an included Kensington Security Slot allows the use of a laptop lock to secure both the docking station and the MacBook.

The docking station allows you to connect a monitor, hard drives, printer, smart phone, headphones, speakers,...

Apple releases tvOS 11.2 update, adds live sports,...

Only a few days after the release of iOS 11.2, Apple has released tvOS 11.2 for the fourth-gen Apple TV and the Apple TV 4K.

The most notable change is the addition of the Sports section to TV. The “Sports” tab joins the previous options of “Watch Now,” “Library,” “Store” and “Search.” It features quick links to live games and the ability to rewatch games that already occurred.

The new TV app feature list includes alerts for when a team is about to play, allowing users to begin streaming a game as soon as it starts. Supported leagues include Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball League, college football, men’s college basketball and more.

Other changes include video display mode switching to match the frame rate and dynamic range of played content, and some user interface refinements.

The tvOS 11.2 update can be snagged either via automatic updates, or manually via the Settings app.

Apple adds mid-2011 Mac mini to obsolete products...

As much of a workhorse the mid-2011 Mac mini is, Apple has just added it to its obsolete products list.

Mid-2011 models have officially been classified as vintage or obsolete as of November 30, 2017, according to an internal memo distributed to Apple Authorized Service Providers.

As such, neither Apple nor Apple Authorized Service Providers will repair or service the 2011 Mac mini, which has now exceeded the five year limits since it was last manufactured, except where required by law. There is an exception for California and Turkey, where mid-2011 Mac mini owners can still obtain service and repairs for up to two additional years.

2011 Mac mini models were the first with a Thunderbolt port, and the first without an optical disc drive for CDs/DVDs.

Even though it’s been more than 1,100 days since Apple last refreshed the Mac mini, Apple CEO Tim Cook likewise said the Mac mini will be an “important part” of Apple’s product lineup going forward in a...

Truth be told, going paperless is a lot easier than you might think.

But we get it, maybe you’re scared that having a scanner’s going to suck (because those antiquated computer-driven scanners of the past sure did!). Or that the software’s going to be crappy (ours isn’t, we made it awesome instead). Or that you’ll be tied into yet another ecosystem (not with us, it’s your paper — do whatever the hell you want with it).

Doxie’s included memory and rechargeable battery, Doxie lets you scan anywhere — no computer required — and then save, share, and send your paper to the cloud with Doxie’s intuitive Mac and iOS apps.

This week only, Doxie’s giving all Daring Fireball readers a...

Apple To Start Paying Ireland the Billions It Owes...

Last year, Apple was ordered to pay a record sum of 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) plus interest after the European Commission said Ireland illegally slashed the iPhone maker's tax bill. "But Ireland was rather slow to start collecting that cash, which led the Commission to refer the Irish government to the European Court of Justice in October due to Ireland's non-compliance with the 2016 ruling," reports Engadget. "However, the Wall Street Journal reports today that the country will finally start collecting those billions of dollars owed by Apple and it may start doing so early next year." From the report:
Both Apple and Ireland have fought back against the ruling -- Ireland has said that the European Union overstepped its authority and got some of the country's laws wrong while Apple has maintained that the amount it's being told to repay was miscalculated. Both are continuing to appeal the decision and the money will sit in an escrow fund while they do so. Ireland has...
