Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to Step Down

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is ready to retire and plans to be out of his executive office within the next 12 months. Mr. Ballmer took over as CEO when company founder Bill Gates stepped down, and now he says Microsoft needs a new CEO on board as the company transitions into a devices and services business.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Steve Ballmer announces his retirement, and Microsoft's stock starts climbing. The idea that he needed to leave has been there for some time, and if the company's stock price is any indication, investors are practically dancing in the streets. Assuming Microsoft finds a leader that can bring a new philosophy to the company and stop the long time corporate culture that promotes fighting between division, other tech companies -- including Apple -- will see some serious competition.

Easy Grayscale and Color Image Effects with...

Using a splash of color in black and white photos is a great way to create high visual impact, but unless you're comfortable using Photoshop that's an effect that can be hard to create -- unless you're using ColorStrokes. This Mac app strips the color from your photos and then lets you paint where you want more than just black and white. You can choose to reveal the photo's original colors, paint new colors in, and even apply effects like hard or soft light and vignettes. ColorStrokes is normally priced at US$9.99, but you can pick it up through Monday for $2.99.

When Apple’s Iron Fisted Control Backfires Users...

Apple released an update for Find My iPhone on Thursday that updated the app's icon, but also temporarily blocked access to its features unless you had an Apple Developer Account. The issue was fixed relatively quickly, but it highlighted why the soon to be released iOS 7 needs a way for users to prevent some apps from auto-updating.

Mac App Store: Hiding Purchased Programs

Whether you've bought a program that you no longer need access to (cough cough Lion cough cough) or just have one that you don't want anymore, being able to hide stuff you've gotten from the Mac App Store is handy. As a bonus, you'll no longer be asked to update programs if you hide them. In this tip, Melissa Holt will tell us how to do it, and if we're nice to her, she might even talk about how to unhide them afterward. Maybe.

Fun With Asciimation in Your OS X Terminal

It's time for some terminal fun, because, really, you can never have too much fun with your terminal. That said, do this at your own risk. If you're not comfy with the terminal, get comfy with the terminal at some point just you can enjoy the Nyancat. Still with me? Open up your terminal and copy/paste this into it:

telnet miku.acm.uiuc.edu

Then enjoy the Nyancat. It's pretty easy, right? I don't want to give anything away, so I'm not including a screenshot of Nyancat in action, but here's the introductory screen that includes the command to kill the process, Control-] (as in bracket).  You can them Command-period to exit the telnet session. Behold the $1,400 Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner

Hey, brother, can you spare $1,400? US, please. There's this desktop 3D scanner I need to buy. OK, I'll work on my begging pitch, but in the meanwhile, check out what has me drooling, the Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner from MakerBot. As you can see in the video, it's a laser-based 3D scanner small enough to fit on your desk (if you have a medium-sized desk or larger). That means you can use it to scan stuff—don't ask me what, because la la la I can't hear you!—and turn it into a 3D schematic that you can then send to a 3D printer! Cool, eh? For designers and engineers who make physical products, this could be a tipping point for inexpensive 3D scanning and printing. If you're rich, it could be something super awesome to impress your friends. [Via TechCrunch]

Gold iPhones: Moving Beyond the Demographic of Me

It's pretty much a given that Apple is adding gold as a third color option for the next iPhone model. It's no secret that I have been less than enamored with the idea, but based on some of the photos leaking to the Internet maybe the gold iPhone 5S won't be so bad after all. That said, it isn't for me, and that's not a problem at all for Apple.

UBS Bumps AAPL Stock Target Up to $560 on iPhone 5C...

With Apple's stock topping the US$500 mark, and the prospect of the all-but-announced iPhone 5C, UBS analyst Steven Milunovich raised his target price from $500 up to $560. Photos and videos of the lower priced iPhone model have been circulating on the Internet, and he sees that as a big money maker for the Cupertino-based company.

The Mac Observer Spin:
Assuming Apple does introduce the iPhone 5C in September -- and at this point that looks like a sure thing -- then iPhone sales should jump up, just like Mr. Milunovich expects. That's good news for Apple, investors, and consumers that want iPhones but have been eying lower priced Android smartphones.

Transporter 2 File Storage and Sync: Now it Just...

The personal cloud storage system Transporter got a major facelift thanks to its Transporter 2.0 software update. The Connected Data team pretty much started over so Transporter is a seamless part of your Mac. You can make folders on Transporter in the Finder, Transporter accounts aren't required any more to receive shared files, you choose which folders sync between your Macs, and an update to the iOS app that lets you do more than see your folders is coming soon, too. Transporter is a file storage, sync, and sharing device that you add to your own network instead of subscribing to, like cloud-based services such as Dropbox or SugarSync. Transporter 2.0 is a beta, but so far it's working great for us.
