Rumor: work at Catcher hints at upcoming Apple AR...

Adding fuel to the rumors (which are almost certainly true) that Apple is working on an augmented reality (AR) headset, the company’s chassis supplier Catcher Technology has revealed it's working on a product line outside of its usual categories.

Catcher chairman Allen Horng tells DigiTimes that the company will start supplying chassis for a brand new product line outside of its existing work in making casings for smartphones and laptops. Since Apple has been showing interest in developing an AR head-mounted display (HMD), market watchers are speculating that this new product line could be connected with the US-based vendor.

Chances this rumor is true, according to the Sellers Research Group (that’s me). 90%. It’s not...

Apple dives to 84th place on Glassdoor’s Best Places...

Apple came in at 84th place on Glassdoor's 2018 Best Places to Work in the U.S. It’s the tech giant’s lowest finish ever.

The workplace review and ratings site lists 100 best places to work in the U.S. with 1,000 or more employees, and 50 small and medium companies to work for with less than 1,000 employees.

I’m not sure why Apple plummeted in the rankings. It’s placement on the previous 10 Glassdoor lists were 36, 25, 22, 35, 34, 10, 20, 22, and 19.

Glassdoor’s annual awards are based on anonymous, voluntary employee input about their workplace over the past year. Ratings are based on a five-point scale, 1.0 being very dissatisfied and 5.0 being very satisfied.

Apple earned a 4.3-star rating out of five during that period, compared to Facebook's leading 4.6-star rating. Glassdoor — which described itself as “the world's most transparent jobs and recruiting...

The latest software update for Apple Watch is now available, just a few days after Apple released iOS 11.2 earlier than expected. The biggest link between the iDevice and Watch software updates is Apple Pay Cash, which is now available for Apple's wearable in watchOS 4.2

Apple Pay Cash lets US-based users send and receive money through iMessage, with funds drawn from a linked credit or debit card. Those who receive money get it in the form of an Apple Pay Cash Card, which they can then use to pay for things through the Apple Wallet app...

Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the forthcoming appearance of Amazon Prime Video to the Apple TV earlier this year, but the launch kept getting pushed back for unknown reasons. Republican tax reform bill could shave up to $47...

Apple may see up to $47 billion removed from its tax bill if Republicans continue with their current (and very controversial) tax reform plan, according to Fortune. This would make the tech giant the biggest beneficiary of the legislation that’s currently before Congress.

According to the Financial Times this is the result of the reduced tax rate that would be applied to foreign earnings under the Republicans’ proposed reform. The Republican proposals for reform calls for taxing past accumulated earnings at rates of no more than 14.5%, regardless of whether or not the money is returned home. Apple calculates it would be liable for $78.6 billion in taxes if its earnings were brought back under the current regime, according to the...

Amazon Prime Video comes to the Apple TV

As promised this summer, an Amazon Prime app is now available for the Apple TV and requires a third generation (or later) Apple TV. It's a free download available on the tvOS App Store.

The app allows Amazon Prime Video subscribers to easily watch TV shows and movies from the service using Apple's set-top box. This is a bit of an about-face for Amazon. In June 2016, CEO Jeff Bezos said he only wants Amazon to sell devices that support Prime Video.

Amazon Prime is a membership program that gives customers access to streaming video, music, e-books, free shipping and a variety of other Amazon-specific services and deals. It costs $99 per year or you can go for a monthly $10.99 charge. You can try the service for free for 30 days.

Patent shows Apple would love for you to use two...

Forget one Apple Watch. Apple wants you to use multiple versions of its smartwatch. The tech giant has been granted a patent (number 9,838,526) for switching between watches or other accessories.

The invention involves systems and methods for allowing a user to switch between watches that have been paired with a device such as an iPhone. In one embodiment, the watches automatically detect a removal of a first watch from a user's wrist and an attachment of a second watch to the user's wrist.

Messages from the watches are transmitted to the device to allow the device to switch the active watch from the first watch to the second watch. The switch can occur while the device is in a locked state, and the device can synchronize the second watch with data received from the first watch.

In the patent info, Apple notes that watches and fitness trackers can be paired, typically though Bluetooth wireless communication, with a companion device to provide health tracking...

Google Wants Progressive Web Apps To Replace Chrome...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Android Police: The Chrome Web Store originally launched in 2010, and serves a hub for installing apps, extensions, and themes packaged for Chrome. Over a year ago, Google announced that it would phase out Chrome apps on Windows, Mac, and Linux in 2018. Today, the company sent out an email to developers with additional information, as well as news about future Progressive Web App support. The existing schedule is mostly still in place -- Chrome apps on the Web Store will no longer be discoverable for Mac, Windows, and Linux users. In fact, if you visit the store right now on anything but a Chromebook, the Apps page is gone. Google originally planned to remove app support on all platforms (except Chrome OS) entirely by Q1 2018, but Google has decided to transition to Progressive Web Apps:

"The Chrome team is now working to enable Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) to be installed on the desktop. Once this functionality ships (roughly...

Check out this crazy-cool invention called Inception Drive by Alexander Kernbaum of Stanford Research Institute (SRI), the same organization that developed Apple’s Siri. It’s an actuator, but one that uses a pulley-within-a-pulley to produce an infinitely-variable transmission. This technology could be used to make robots move more efficiently, and perhaps even make them safer. While Mr. Kernbaum’s focus is robotics, his invention could be applied to any number of uses where things move, and that’s just way cool. The IEEE Spectrum has more on the invention, including the video below. I love how Mr. Kernbaum is casually hanging out in a hallway with demo models of something that could change the way humanity’s machines move.

Apple launches Search Ads Basic

Apple has launched Search Ads Basic, an App Store ad program designed to simplify the process to eliminate keywords and bids. According to the tech giant, advertisers can tell them your app and monthly budget.

The company’s intelligent automation creates the ad and matches it to interested users. Search Ads Basic pricing is a cost-per-install model (CPI), so you only pay up to your maximum CPI. Apple recommends a maximum CPI based on what the company knows about your app and what similar apps are willing to pay to reach the same users.

Search Ads Basic uses the app name, subtitle, description, preview videos, and screenshots approved for your App Store product page to create your ad. If you change your App Store metadata, it can take up to 24 hours to be reflected in the ad preview within your account, and up to two hours for it to be reflected in...

iPhone X charging speeds compared

With the addition of both fast charging and wireless charging to Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup, there are more ways than ever to charge your iPhone. Every method is different — some are faster and more expensive, while others are slower but more convenient.

Juli Clover did a good job with these tests.

MarsEdit 4

Browser-based interfaces are slow, clumsy, and require you to be online just to use them. Browsers are perfect for reading web content, but not ideal for creating it. If you’re serious about writing for the web, you need a desktop blog editor. If you’re lucky enough to have a Mac, nothing is more powerful, or more elegant than MarsEdit.

I absolutely love MarsEdit. Every post I write on The Loop goes through this app and has for many years.

Rumor: iMac Pro to launch Dec. 18

A “handful” of enthusiasts of have taken to Twitter to report that Google, and now Wikipedia, are claiming Apple will unveil the iMac Pro on Monday, Dec. 18, according to The Apple Post.

Announced in June, the all-new iMac Pro — with its 27-inch Retina 5K display, next generation Intel Xeon processors up to 18 cores, up to 22 Teraflops of graphics computation, up to 16GB of VRAM, up to 128GB of memory, built-in Ethernet, and support for one billion colors — is the most powerful Mac ever made. ‘Consumer Reports’ ranks the iPhone 8/8 Plus higher...

As noted by MacRumors, Consumer Reports has posted its final iPhone X testing results, and, though listing it among the top 10 smartphones, ranks it below the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus.

Consumer Reports says the iPhone X didn’t beat out the iPhone 8 or the iPhone 8 Plus because of its poor performance on a durability test. Both the iPhone 8 and the iPhone 8 Plus better survived a tumble test for emulating real-world drops and fumbles of about 2.5 feet that can result in device damage, despite the fact that all three devices have glass bodies.

“If not for the damage in that durability test, the iPhone X would have come in ahead of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus,” says Richard Fisco, head of smartphone testing at CR. The iPhone X is an innovative device with a fantastic camera and beautiful...

Review: Bragi Dash Pro Wireless Earphones

In February 2016, we reviewed the Bragi Dash, one of the first — if not the first — "true wireless" headphones. It was an extremely ambitious product, though that ambition may have partly been its downfall — despite a long-delayed launch, Bragi seemed to have over-promised on features and, sadly, the Dash's core functionality was lacking. Despite the Dash's extremely thoughtful and sharp design, it was plagued by connection issues that were only partially addressed in future firmware updates. Bragi hasn't given up; instead, they're back with an upgraded version of the Dash — the Dash Pro — that promises better basic functionality and the introduction of many of the features that were part of its original vision for this product. Though the Dash Pro still isn't perfect, it has come a long way. {/exp:char_limit}
