Review: GearMo 75W USB-C Car Charger lets you charge...

Times change. Back when I was doing a lot of Mac consulting, I bought an inverter for my car so that I could convert the 12V power in the vehicle to 120V AC to charge my MacBook Air between appointments. It was bulky, hot, and slow. Fast-forward to 2017, when a tiny box from GearMo ($22.95 from Amazon, Model GM-UCPDCARB) can provide 60W of USB Type-C power to my MacBook Pro and charge one other device through another USB-A port that uses Qualcomm's Quick Charge 3.0 protocol.

This charger was released on 10/1/17 to provide a total of 75W of charging power. As noted above, the USB-C connector can pump 60W to your MacBook or MacBook Pro to charge it up fast, while the other port can either provide 15W at 3A, or use Qualcomm's QC 3.0 at 12V/1.5A, 9V/2A or 5V/2.4A.

Apple products arrive on a Lazada store for those in...

Apple fans around Southeast Asia can now get new iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks from an official store on Lazada, reports TechInAsia. That’s good news for those fans, as the tech giant only has one store in the region (it’s in Singapore).

Apple’s Lazada store opens today in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Singapore, with Malaysia joining Dec. 11. Vietnam too will participate at an unconfirmed date, notes TechInAsia.

The article adds that Alibaba-owned Lazada will get stock directly from Apple, after forming an agreement with the Cupertino, California-based company. That makes it the only official online seller of Apple’s baubles in the region.

The Lazada Group was founded in 2012 by Rocket Internet in Singapore with the intention of establishing the Amazon.com business model in Southeast Asia to take advantage of the nascent online consumer market and...

Tap your keyboard alignment of choice (left, right, center) and you’re good to go.

TrueDepth, FaceID likely coming to all iPhones next...

Finisar, Apple's second largest supplier of vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) arrays, has announced the acquisition of a 700,000-square foot . As noted by AppleInsider, this suggests TrueDepth and FaceID are coming to all iPhones in 2018.

The TrueDepth camera for the iPhone X works by using a projector to cast 30,000 dots on your face, which it then reads with an infrared camera. Apple already demonstrated applications of the system, FaceID and Animojis, both of which promise implications of their own when the TrueDepth SDK (software developer kit) is available for developers.

By the way, a VCSEL is a semiconductor-based laser diode that emits a...

Analyst: 2018 follow-up to the iPhone X could sport...

In a note to clients — as reported by MacRumors.com — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says the 2018 follow-up to the iPhone X could feature up to 10% more battery power if Apple and LG Chem are able to deploy a one-cell design for the device's L-shaped battery, as opposed to the two-cell battery used in the iPhone X. He writes:

Two new 2H18 iPhone models could adopt L-shaped battery (6.5” & 5.8” OLED models), with capacity upgraded for all models. In order to extend battery life, we believe it is necessary to expand battery capacity because all three new 2H18 models will be equipped with TrueDepth Camera, which consumes more power. We think Apple (US) is developing a 1-cell L-shaped battery in collaboration with LGC (KR). If the new battery enters mass production on time, the 5.8” OLED iPhone model will come with a battery with larger capacity (2,900-3,000mAh with higher RFPCB ASP $2.1-2.4). For the 6.1” LCD...

Rumor: Apple to release three new iPhone models in...

The rumor mill is churning and it’s thought that Apple will release three iPhones in 2018, including two OLED models and one LCD model that could feature a metal back like the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, reports Nikkei.

Nikkei has cited an anonymous source “privy to the company’s product designs,” the source stating that one of Apple’s 2018 models will boast a 6.1-inch LCD display while the two OLED models will measure in at 5.8 inches and either 6.2 or 6.3 inches.

Apple’s LCD model will boast a metal back that will “come in several colors,” with the body for the device potentially being manufactured by Casetek, a Pegatron subsidiary.

The rumors are in line with previous details shared in a research not by KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo, albeit there’s some variance in size predictions for the three devices.

Kuo has stated that Apple will introduce three iPhones in 2018: an OLED model that measures in at 5.8 inches like the current iPhone X, an...

External Link: HomeKit Vulnerability Discovered,...

Zac Hall of 9to5Mac discovered a vulnerability in HomeKit, Apple’s home automation framework, that could allow unauthorized control of accessories like smart locks and garage door openers. The good news is that Apple has already closed the security hole on the server side, so your devices are no longer vulnerable. Unfortunately, Apple's server-side fix also prevents you from giving remote access to shared users. Another update to iOS next week should eliminate the vulnerability and restore full functionality.

The future: the Mac and iPad will merge and run...

The always entertaining columnist, John C. Dvorak, writes in a new column dubbed “Apple is Ready to Ditch the Mac” that Apple is, well, ready to ditch the Mac as iOS is poised to replace macOS. However, the Sellers Research Group (that’s me) says he’s missing the big picture.

As he’s said before, Dvorak feels the Mac will be phased out and the whole line will be replaced by iPads. He admits that the Mac “is not dead tomorrow,” though he doesn’t say when we can read the obit.

A more likely scenario: both the Mac and iPad will “die.” Actually, that’s not the correct term; “transform” is more like it. Just as the iPod (only available now as the iPod touch) transformed like a caterpillar into the iPhone, Apple’s desktop, laptop, and tablet line-ups will evolve into a merged form factor (or factors) that take the best elements of each with a user interface based on the...

Apple Has Ruined Its Podcasts App

Mike Pesca, host of Slate's daily podcast The Gist, writes about the recent interface changes to Apple's Podcasts app (condensed): Up until two months ago, the Apple Podcasts app was the only podcasting app I used. It gave me a nice, workable list of the shows I liked; let me know when those shows were updated; played the shows easily and without glitches; and offered the option of listening in double speed. I knew where everything was, and I thought of its shortcomings not as features the app was lacking but more like things one simply could not do with a podcast. If the Apple Podcast app wasn't great for sharing podcasts via email or text -- and it was not -- I told myself, "That just must be something that's hard for a podcast app to execute." I figured the best a podcasting app could do was to facilitate sharing the feed of a show, rather than the specific episode I was listening to. I never dared dream I could send a specific time within that episode. What sorcery is that? But...

Best Buy is selling an 8TB external hard drive for $...

If you missed out on Best Buy's Black Friday deal on the WD Easystore 8TB external hard drive, you're in luck. Today it's one of the big box retailer's daily doorbusters, though its price tag of $140 isn't quite as cheap.

That's still a very good deal, however. While this Easystore drive is part of Western Digital's exclusive line for Best Buy, its equivalents at Amazon and other retailers are currently selling for about $45 more. This discount also undercuts last week's sale price of $150.

This drive comes with USB 3.0, which WD says allows transfer rates of up to 5 gigabits per second. As with other WD drives, it comes with WD Backup (the company's automated backup software) to keep all the files on your PC in more than one place.

Director of Apple's health tech division to...

Former Gliimpse founder Anil Sethi is leaving Apple's health tech division to found a new start-up called Ciitizen. He was named director of the team in 2016.

According to CNBC, he had taken some months off to help his sister Tania fight cancer, and promised her before she died on Sept. 11 that he would do something to help very sick patients. (He and his sister are shown together in the accompanying photo). Ciitizen will help patients get and share information like genomic information, labs, ethical wills or advanced directives.

Apple acquired Gliimpse last year. The company provides “Gliimpses” of your health data. The company helps users collect their medical data from web portals, then help organize it into a shared and understood health story.

Sethi had been on leave from Apple for several months to care full-time...

When it comes to brands, Apple’s iPhones remained the dominant camera models used by the Flickr community, with 54% of the top 100 devices being named iPhone and an almost clean sweep of the top 10 Devices of 2017, accounting for nine of the top 10 devices.

The Canon 5D Mark III placed 9th in the Top 10 Devices on Flickr of 2017. The iPhone6, iPhone6s, and iPhone5s were the most popular iPhone cameras, respectively. Canon was the second largest brand used by photographers on Flickr, responsible for 23% of the top 100 devices. Nikon was the third most popular brand of 2017, with 18%.

Flickr is an image and video hosting website and web services suite. In addition to being a popular website for users to share and embed personal photographs, the service is also used by photo researchers and by bloggers to host images that they embed in blogs and social media.

∞ Apple reveals 2017’s top charts, but don’t try to...

I enjoyed going through Apple’s tops of 2017 list.

But, it did remind me of one broken piece of Apple’s app-purchasing system, still unaddressed after all this time. To see it, you have to open the list on your Mac.

On your Mac, if you click on Apple’s top movie link, after a bit of shuffling, you’ll be taken to an iTunes page listing the top movies of the year. Click on a movie and you’ll be taken to that movie’s iTunes page so you can rent or buy.

BUT.

Still on your Mac, still looking at that same best of list, try clicking on an...

It's such a hassle to carry a battery pack with you everywhere to keep your iPhone charged. Not only do you need to carry the battery pack, but also a cable with which to connect the phone to the pack. Those days are over now for the iPhone X, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which utilize Qi technology for wireless charging. With the JS Wireless Charging Power Bank ($52.50) there's no need to carry tangled cables -- just place your phone onto the power bank and it begins charging!

Of course, like most battery packs on the market, the JS Wireless Charging Power Bank also has a pair of USB ports that let you charge other devices as you're charging your iPhone. Here are the details of this innovative...

Your Text Replacements in iOS and macOS now sync...

Christian Zibreg, iDownloadBlog:

Text Replacements, an often overlooked iOS and macOS feature that automatically expands custom text snippets into longer phrases or whole sentences as you’re typing, should no longer be plagued with the widely reported intermittent syncing issues.

As first noted by Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, an Apple spokesperson told him back in September that an update that moves text replacement syncing to CloudKit was scheduled to roll out to iOS 11 and macOS 10.13 High Sierra users in the next month or so.

Brian Stucki, who first explained why Text Replacements didn’t sync reliably between iOS devices and Macs, has now confirmed in an update to his original post that snippet syncing now at long last works reliably across all devices running macOS High Sierra and iOS 11.

Nice to see this CloudKit progress.

If you’re of a certain age Liquid Television has a special place in your heart. If that doesn’t ring a bell, it’s a ground breaking animation series that ran on MTV in the 1990s that gave us shows like Beavis and Butt-head along with Æon Flux. The series featured shorts that defined a new style of animation and storytelling, and the full episodes haven’t been seen in their complete form since they were originally aired. That just changed because MTV posted the entire series on Archive.org where you can watch them all for free. If you haven’t seen the show before, clear your weekend schedule and start watching. If you remember the show, well, you’re welcome.

3 top reasons people dump Android for iPhone

Jonny Evans, writing for Computerworld, on the top reasons switchers are switching to iPhone, as laid out by Creative Strategies. Though the title might seem click-baity, the logic is thoughtful.

A taste:

Today’s smartphone user may have subscriptions with multiple such services. They are also likely to own multiple devices, and that’s where the problem emerges. In contrast to competitors, Apple’s platforms are far better at syncing passwords, settings, images and other items between all your devices using the same Apple ID. You can even set up a new iPhone just by tapping it with your old one in iOS 11.

That kind of convenience makes it so much easier for consumers rapidly engaging in a multi-device, multiple-service, cross platform digital existence. This sync extends across to Apple’s Macs, of course.

Solid read.

The hidden player spurring a wave of cheap consumer...

Farhad Manjoo, New York Times:

On the surface, the camera doesn’t sound special. Like home internet cameras made by Nest or Netgear, the Wyze device can monitor an area for motion or sound. When it spots something, it begins recording a short clip that it stores online, for access on your phone or your computer.

But the WyzeCam has one groundbreaking feature that no rival can match. It is being sold for such an unbelievably low price — $20 — that it sent me tunneling into the global gadget industry to figure out how Wyze had done it. That, in turn, led to a revelation about the future of all kinds of products, from cameras to clothes.

And:

Nest’s and Netgear’s comparable indoor cameras sell for around $200 each, while Wyze’s device goes for $20 plus shipping if you buy directly from the company’s website.

And, most importantly:

Wyze did not create a home internet camera for a tenth of the price of rivals by skimping on quality. Though the...
