How to upgrade to an iPhone 5s or iPhone 5c
Ready to upgrade your phone to either the iPhone 5c or 5s? Well, we’ve got some good news and some bad news.
The bad news? Depending on your carrier, it might be more difficult than ever this year to upgrade your relatively recent iPhone for a brand-spanking-new model. The good news? Depending on how you upgrade this year, transitioning to next year’s new iPhone might be a breeze. It just depends on what you’re willing to pay.
And the neutral-ish news? The fact that Apple has split the iPhone into two product lines will have no bearing on your ability to upgrade to a new phone—there will be no special eligibility requirements for upgrading to the more-expensive 5s. An upgrade, it turns out, is just an upgrade, even if some upgrades are more significant than others. That means you just need to worry about which phone is right for you.

With Two New Models, How Many iPhones Can Apple Sell...
The iPhone 3GS sold more than one million units during its first weekend at market. The iPhone 4 sold more than 1.7 million. The iPhone 4S sold more four million, and the iPhone 5 more than five million. But those were all single devices. How many iPhones can Apple sell in a weekend when it’s peddling two new models, not just one?
Tough to gauge, obviously — particularly after last year’s abysmal slate of predictions. But that hasn’t stopped a few folks from trying a little prelaunch weekend entrail reading.
Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster was among the analysts issuing Wednesday research notes hazarding a guess as to how many units of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c Apple can sell between Friday and Monday. He expects Apple to sell between five million and six million iPhones over the weekend. At the...

They look at the ins and outs of both models, and talk about what kind of users will value the different features each has. They also talk about Apple's new "Plastic Perfected" commercial and the fact that the iBooks app was updated for iOS 7, and it's still skeuomorphic.

Apple’s ‘Plastic Perfected’ iPhone 5c Commercial...
Apple is running another new iPhone commercial. It's called "Plastic Perfected," and it's promoting the iPhone 5c. There's no voice over, and the soundtrack for the commercial is a song called "Rill Rill" by Sleigh Bells (though it's an alternate mix from the album version). Visually, the commercial features (computer generated) liquid plastic in several colors being poured into the shape of an iPhone 5c. It's very reminiscent of some of the early iMac commercials that features iMacs swirling around the screen. That, combined with the great music makes for a very compelling ad.

iBooks for iOS Updated, Stays Skeuomorphic
Apple released iBooks 3.1.3 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch late on Tuesday in preparation for the launch if iOS 7. While the update does improve iOS compatibility, it didn't drop its skeuomorphic look and is sticking with its wooden bookshelf interface.
The Mac Observer Spin:
Apple treats skeuomorphism like a rash, so it's surprising to see that it's still part of iBooks. That probably means there's a really big update coming soon and that the current version of iBooks is getting little more than critical compatibility updates to keep in working until the complete redesign is ready to go.

Structure Sensor Turns Your iPad into a 3D Scanner
We live in SciFi times. I mean, really, George Jetson would be impressed. Tuesday's example of this is he Structure Sensor from Occipital, a Kickstarter project that turns your iPad into a portable 3D scanner. The device attaches to your iPad and you can use it to 3D map indoor spaces or capture 3D models of objects and people. The company is developing an API for developers to tap into the device, too. This is definitely cool, and lots of people appear to agree. Occipital had an initial funding goal of US$100,000, and in less than the first day, it's blown past that target to hit $200,000. The early pledge offers were snapped up, but there are still some $349 pledges left that gets you a Structure Sensor for your iPad. Check out the movie for more.

So you've waited in line for an Apple product launch? Oh yeah? Well, have you waited in line during a hurricane or typhoon? A group of people waiting in line for Apple's iPhone 5c and 5s launch on Friday, August 20th, at Apple's Tokyo Ginza store can answer that with an affirmative, and they have a video to prove it. Fortunately, Apple took pity on them and invited them inside just before it hit. Go ahead, Samsung and Microsoft, try and make fun of that, because that's all either company can do, make fun of it. No one is going to wait in line during a typhoon for a product launch for either of those companies. This could be a big iPhone launch for Apple in Japan because the company signed up DoCoMo—Japan's largest carrier—for the first time. Kotaku has more information (via AppleInsider).

There was lots of grumbling when Apple obsoleted legacy speaker docks by moving iPhone and iPad to the Lightning connector, but a company called Auris saw some opportunity in that grumbling. Slip it on your Dock the way you used to slip on your iPhone, and you then send music from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or PC (through iTunes) wirelessly. Android and Windows Phone are also supported through DLNA. It's Wi-Fi (rather than Bluetooth), so range won't be an issue in most settings. Auris is trying to raise US$56,000, and has already raised $21,800 in just the first day. Early backers can get a Skye with $64, $69, $74, or $79 (it will retail for $89).
