The Week in iOS Apps: A good investment?

Others of note

This week’s roundup of new and updated iOS apps includes an app that “invests your loose change” into a diversified portfolio. Plus: apps for gamers, art fans, sports lovers and more.

Acorns

This is an unusual investing app: Acorns is free for iPhone; you connect your credit or debit card account to the app and, anytime you make a purchase, it invests your “loose change” into a diversified porfolio. (Buy lunch, for example, for $12.50, and the app will round that amount up to $13—using the 50-cent difference for the investment.) You can also choose to directly invest funds in amounts of your choosing. Acorns charges $1 a month, plus annual management fees, once you’ve started investing. Will microinvesting yield big returns? Only time will tell.

Apple’s Jonathon Ive Apparently Confirms iWatch,...

Apple's Senior Vice President of Design, Jonathan Ive, seems to have tipped the company's hand and revealed that the iWatch is real, and that it won't look like every other smartwatch that's hit the market. Mr. Ive has apparently been bragging about the device and one of the designers who has been working on the project told the New York Times just what he said.

The Mac Observer Spin: Apple product designers openly talking about unannounced products? Unless the New York Times misunderstood what the Apple employee said -- or the source misconstrued Mr. Ive's comments -- the fact that they confirmed the iWatch is real is even more surprising than what features it will include.

KGI report claims both iPhone 6s to offer 128GB...

KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in a report this morning, states that both 4.7- and 5.5-inch models of the iPhone 6 will be launched next week and will both offer 128GB storage option. If Apple retains its usual three-tier structure this would suggest 32GB, 64GB and 128GB models – though it could be that 128GB would be a fourth tier, as with its iPad Air models. Or, as a previous report suggested, Apple could keep the 16GB option as a very low price tier and skip 32GB.

The same report predicts that the iPad Air 2 will be announced on the same day as the iPhone 6 rather than in a separate event in October. In this scenario, Apple would forgo any physical updates to the iPad Mini line (perhaps price drops?) If true, this suggests that it could be a...

KGI on iWatch: 8 GB storage, 512 MB RAM, 1.3 and 1.5...

A new report from KGI’s Ming-Chi Kuo sheds some interesting light on the iWatch specifications. Kuo believes the iWatch will feature 8 GB of internal storage, with 512 MB of RAM. Naturally, these stats are lower than current iOS devices (which have upwards of 16 GB of storage and 1 GB of RAM), but still seems high for a wearable smartwatch. This may suggest the device can act more independently from an iPhone than most assume. 8 GB of storage space is quite a lot and could be used for things like caching maps, or perhaps enable offline voice recognition.

KGI also believes the iWatch will come in two sizes, with a 1.3 inch and a 1.5 inch screen. This reflects longstanding rumours that Apple is targeting two sizes, to make it appeal to both gender’s...

There’s no shortage of robot vacuum cleaners these days, but it looks like the Dyson 360 Eye – due for launch next year – could be the best one yet.

The 360 Eye uses Dyson’s cyclone technology, where centrifugal force is used to throw dirt out of spiral airflows, making it more powerful than anything on the market. But the clever part is the 360-degree camera system, which allows the device to accurately position itself by 3D reference points rather than the simpler 2D systems used in existing robocleaners.

The Dyson Link iPhone app will allow you to start, stop and schedule cleaning sessions, as well as monitor its progress remotely. The device’s firmware can also be updated via the app.

Now your recommendations can be tailored to individual friends.

Samsung Taps David Hasselhoff, Knight Rider, and Kit...

Samsung released on Tuesday a rather entertaining commercial for its (lolbecauseapplehomekit) smart home effort. I'm not sure what exactly the commercial is pushing, but it features David Hasselhoff and his Knight Rider legacy, as well as William Daniels, reprising his role as the voice of Kit, Mr. Hasselhoff's "smart car." Of particular enjoyment is Mr. Hasselhoff's attempt to smooth talk a hot young member of the crew, who is plainly unimpressed and mentions her father might have talked about Knight Rider. Maybe. As I said above, it's very entertaining. One other note: that this commercial is devoid of specifics could suggest that Samsung has at last learned it lesson, and will wait to copy what Apple unveils after the unveiling rather than release a sad, pathetic excuse of a "FIRST POST!" product beforehand that it then has to apologize for later. We'll see. [Via Mashable]

Review: Soundfreaq Double Spot SFQ-09 Wireless...

Most of Soundfreaq’s speakers require no explanation: it’s clear from their designs that they are made to be stationary, portable, ultra-portable, clock radios, or highly budget-sensitive. Double Spot doesn’t fit neatly into any of those categories. It’s based upon the company’s stripped-down $70 Sound Spot, yet it’s more than twice as large, and roughly twice as expensive.   When asked to explain Double Spot’s…

Apple: Celebrity Photo Theft Due to Compromised...

Apple released a statement Tuesday claiming that stolen celebrity photo thefts released over the holiday weekend were the result of targeted attacks on individual accounts, rather than a breach of iCloud security or Find My iPhone. The company said in an "Apple Media Advisory" that it was continuing to investigate and was working with law enforcement to identify the thieves.

The Mac Observer Spin: That statement was an uncharacteristically quick response for Apple-it's also a sign that the company wants to get out in front of this issue. This is precisely the kind of issue where Apple is best served by being open, transparent, and aggressive.

In response to allegations that iCloud played a role in the recent release of many private celebrity photos, Apple has confirmed that “certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet.” Despite the account intrusions, Apple claims that none of its systems, including iCloud and Find my iPhone, were breached. iHome iBN6 Waterproof Bluetooth Speaker

Originally shown at CES back in January, iBN6 has three major and interrelated things going for it: an edgy new body and a IPX7 waterproof certification at a very affordable price. iHome is arguably the king of $100 speakers — it has had more very good and great options at this price point than any other Apple accessory maker — and iBN6 has been designed to deliver a compelling waterproof experience despite selling for $50 less than Grace Digital’s…

Analyst: New iPhones Coming, Maybe an iWatch, too

With Apple's September 9 media event only days away, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says two iPhone models are coming with NFC support and a digital payment system may be announced, but he puts the odds on an iWatch announcement at 50 percent. He also expects first weekend iPhone 6 sales will be strong, but won't beat last year's 9 million unit iPhone launch.

The Mac Observer Spin: If first weekend iPhone 6 sales don't top iPhone 5S sales, get ready for the "Apple is doomed" reports. And if there isn't an iWatch announcement, the "If Steve Jobs were alive" articles won't be far behind.
