iOS 7 lock screen vulnerability reported, and here...
It took less than 24 hours for someone to find a way to break through iOS 7's passcode feature, and wouldn't you know it, the new Control Center is to blame. By going through a rather simple series of swipes and taps, a user can bypass the lock screen on some iOS 7 devices. You start in the Control Center, switch to the Timer, then double-tap the home button which lets you access the Multitasking feature, allowing you to browse apps without having to unlock the device.
I say "some" because there's a rather simple tweak you can perform that will prevent someone from using this nasty trick on your own iPhone or iPad: Simply go to Settings -> Control Center and toggle the "Access on Lock Screen" option to "off." Ta-da! You're safe!

Microsoft won’t make Office editing free on iOS/...
QuickOffice for iPad and Android. Google
Today Google made Quickoffice—its app for creating and editing Microsoft Office documents—free to all users of iPhones, iPads, and Android devices.
Quickoffice was bought by Google a year ago, and it has provided editing of Microsoft Office documents in their native formats on mobile devices for more than a couple of years. The app cost $20, but for the past year Google made it free to companies that are paying subscribers of Google Apps for Business. With today's update, it's free to everyone with a Google account, whether you pay for a Google Apps subscription or not.

Diptic PDQ is a fast way to make attractive collages...
I've reviewed Diptic in the past. It's a great iPhone app for creating photo collages on the fly. Now, Diptic PDQ (US$0.99, universal) gives you many of the same features with a new look and a quicker workflow.
The developers call it a "stripped down" version of Diptic, but don't let that fool you. Diptic PDQ has the same wide feature set but far fewer design templates. While Diptic has 200, Diptic PDQ offers just 35 templates.
It's easy to manipulate your image within the frames for the best composition, and you can adjust the size of each frame. Images can be zoomed and rotated, and reversed for a mirror image. Borders can be customized by color and size. There are 14 filters you can apply to your images.
I made some impressive collages with very little trouble. Your collage can be saved to your...

Pandora Investors Listen to iTunes Radio, Buy More...
Pandora investors used to be skittish types. They sold their stock whenever anyone murmured about the prospects of a rival Web radio service from Apple. And that happened a lot last year.
But things are different in 2013. Pandora stock has been on a tear, even when it became clear that iTunes Radio was a go, for real.
And now that iTunes Radio really is real, with yesterday’s debut of iOS7, Pandora investors are even more confident.
Today the stock hit a record high of $27.50, before closing at $27.35. Perspective: As recently as last fall, the stock was barely...

The iPhone 5c can be cheap in China
When Apple introduced the iPhone 5c, analysts and pundits were taken aback that the device was not as cheap as they were anticipating. How, they pondered, would Apple be able to increase marketshare without a more affordable device aimed at emerging markets?
The result? A huge sell-off in Apple shares.
As is typically the case with respect to Apple-related panic, however, the reality is much less alarming than the hysteria would have you believe.
AllThingsD, for example, recently pointed out that both China Telecom and China Unicom are offering substantial subsidies for Apple's newest iPhones.
At 4,488 yuan - about $730 - the off-contract price of Apple's new iPhone 5c may well be too heady for China, the world's most populous mobile phone market. But the carriers distributing the device there are offering plenty...

Google Wallet client lands on iOS, missing a key...
On Thursday, iOS devices gained yet one more way to manage your financial details, thanks to the release of an official client for Google’s Wallet service.
Available as a free download from the App Store, the app clocks in at a little over 8MB, and requires iOS 6.0 or above. Unfortunately, it doesn't come as a universal binary, which means that, if you want to access Wallet on an iPad, you are forced to either use its iPhone emulator or rely on the service's Web-based interface.
No NFC? No problem
Although Google Wallet has been available on the Web since 2011, a client for iOS has been a long time coming, due in no small part to the fact that the search giant originally intended to only provide the service through devices capable of supporting near-field...

iOS 7 adoption rate after one day is higher than for...
If it seemed like everyone on planet Earth was trying to install iOS 7 at the same you were, well, you're probably not wrong in that assumption. Information from Chitika Insights and others who have been following the action of the past 24 hours shows that anywhere from 18.2 percent (Chitika) to 36.10 percent (Mixpanel at 10:30 AM PT, see figure below) of all iOS devices are now running Apple's latest mobile OS.
Why the difference in the numbers? Well, it probably has to do with the methodologies used by the two companies. A Mixpanel spokesperson responded to this question as follows:
The data in the iOS 7 adoption report on Mixpanel Trends is based on an aggregated set of the more than 15 billion actions analyzed by Mixpanel each month. The report shows the share of total activity on devices running a version of iOS...

“Apple takes user security very seriously,” Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller told AllThingsD. “We are aware of this issue, and will deliver a fix in a future software update.”
Forbes publicizes a bug in the iOS 7 Lock screen and Control Center implementation that could allow a person to bypass the device’s passcode and access the photo library. Apple is silently telling us to stop asking for near...
We've been hearing rumors about an NFC-enabled iPhone and/or iPad for years now, and the song is always the same: "Sources say the next iDevice will have NFC, and it's about time!" Yet here we sit, with a pair of new iPhones just a day from launch, and no NFC in sight.
If there's anything the iPhone 5s and AirDrop should tell us, it's that we should stop expecting an Apple smartphone or tablet with near-field communication, at least for a while.
NFC speaks two languages
It's important to separate the two primary uses for NFC: Sharing and payments.
- NFC mobile sharing is useful for everything from virtually handing documents to a coworker, to (apparently) getting naughty videos from your spouse before a business trip. This is an NFC feature that can be used by the widest range of people, and all that is needed is two individuals with compatible devices.
- NFC payments...

Whoa, this one caught our newsroom off-guard: Google has finally brought Google Wallet to iOS, with a version that came out for the iPhone today.
Along with the iOS release, Google has added the ability to send money from within the app. My husband, who uses Google Wallet on his Galaxy Nexus, pointed out that the interface has received an overhaul across the board with this release. You'll also be able to keep track of loyalty programs and receive offers targeted to Google Wallet users. Turns out our furry friends have enough going on in their paws to register with an iPhone 5s's Touch ID. TechCrunch tested the concept out on a review unit, and found that a cat's paw could be mapped by Touch ID, and that said cat's paw could then unlock that device. Pretty cool, eh? It's not particularly useful or practical, but it's interesting to see. We asked an expert in biology and physiology about it, and he told us, "It's got sweat glands and enough dermal structure to create a pattern. Knew you'd ask." Smart chap. A couple of notes: It's a space gray iPhone 5s in a red case, not an iPhone 5c. Also, this isn't some kind of fail of Apple's Touch ID. It's more of a testament to how awesome Apple's sensor is.

It's not often that Apple execs sit down for in-depth interviews, but when it happens, it is usually chock full of interesting information. The Businessweek interview is no different.
One of the many persistent criticisms regarding Apple's iPhone strategy is that the company needs a cheap handset to appeal to more cost conscious consumers. Cook, however, explained that Apple's business model isn't predicated on churning out low value devices at cheap pricepoints.
To Cook, the mobile industry doesn't race to the bottom, it splits. One part does indeed go cheap, with commoditized products that compete on little more than price. "There's always a large junk part...

How-to: Shave some GBs off of your iOS device so you...
Yesterday iOS 7 came out. There was a massive rush to try to install and it download it. The one thing that we were not prepared for or made aware of was the need to have up to 3.3 GB of space available in order to download and install iOS 7. The reason you needed 3.3 GB available is that the 900MB download of iOS 7 also needs to move a lot of stuff around during installation.
If you are like us, you might not have that 3.3GB of space needed on your iOS device. We’ve spent the last year downloading music, videos and apps to the point where our iPads tell us to stop. So now we need to delete some of our stuff.
Once you free up your space on your device, and back up your device, then you will be ...

Activation Lock works with an Apple ID and Find My iPhone to ensure that a device cannot be erased or reactivated without an Apple ID password. The prosecutors urged consumers to enable device passcodes or use Touch ID on the iPhone 5s, but note that those steps alone don't keep thieves from stealing smartphones. They believe that the long-term use of Activation Lock by a majority of iPhone...

iOS 7 video tip: How to shut down running apps
One of the big questions we're hearing from people who are making the jump to iOS 7 is "How the heck do I shut down apps that are running in the background?" In the past, you'd double-tap the home button and get a display of app icons on your screen, then tap the red "X" on those icons to shut them down.
With iOS 7, it's done with a swipe. Double-tap the home button and you see all of the apps that are currently chugging away on your device. To shut one of them down, just swipe it up and off of your screen. Want to do two of them at once? Flick 'em both off the screen with a two-finger gesture.
Since a video is worth a thousand words, here's a short clip showing you exactly how to do it -- note that you can resize this video to full-screen to see it more clearly. Be sure to send this to all of your friends who are asking the same question, OK?

iOS 7 and the "death of textures"
When Tim Cook said that iOS 7 marks the biggest change to iOS since the original iPhone, he wasn't kidding. If you've been able to download iOS 7 without any hiccups, you've undoubtedly noticed that iOS 7 looks different, way different.
With Scott Forstall out of the mix, Jony Ive was put in charge of the look and feel of iOS and the end result is a flatter and arguably cleaner interface that does away with many of the textures users may have grown accustomed to with previous iterations of iOS. In short, iOS 7 is a whole lot flatter than its predecessor.
Highlighting this significant shift in design, Ars Technica put together an extensive gallery highlighting a number of instances where Apple opted for a completely texture-less existence, one devoid of drop shadows, gradients, and other visual cues.
In one example below, we see that the new...

Apple's new operating system has received acclaim for many of its interface tweaks and service additions, but one of the less heralded features Apple built into iOS 7 is also quite useful: a privacy setting that allows users to block specific people from contacting them.

iPhone 5s sales go live, with 7-10 day shipping...
The iPhone 5s has just gone on sale in Australia. However, as has been noted several times, supply of the 5s is extremely constrained. As a result, Apple is already quoting 7-10 day shipping estimates for the device. The prolonged availability applies to all models and all colors. 5s cases are similarly low in supply, to a similar extent, quoting 3-5 day shipping times.
Supply issues seem to apply to all countries. In the UK, O2 has announced that they will have no 5s’ in stock, but will order it for when it becomes available. Via CZ on Twitter, for the Apple Store in Hong Kong, the 5s has already lapsed into October for shipping.

Tim Cook: Android isn't Windows and Apple won...
Like the groundhog waking from hibernation to predict the coming of spring, another notoriously shy mammal recently made its own rare public appearance.
On the eve of the release of the new iPhone 5s and 5c, Apple CEO Tim Cook granted a rare interview with Bloomberg Businessweek on the state of the mobile market. Here are some of the highlighted lessons form the conversation:
The iPhone 5c is not junk
While many feared that the introduction of the low-cost version of the iPhone might signal Apple’s newfound embrace of mediocrity, Cook waved off these concerns by saying “there’s always a large junk part of the market, we’re not in the junk business.”
The “c” in iPhone 5c could be said to stand for “color,” but it could as easily stand for “China”—as in the country’s exploding smartphone market...

iPhone 5s & 5c get first teardowns revealing...
With Australia, alongside other countries in Asia included in the initial September 20 iPhone launch, the first to get their hands on the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, a repair company in the country has just posted the first teardown of the two new iPhones. The iExperts Team out of Australia has taken apart both devices, revealing new components but not yet giving us a look at what we expect will be a Samsung made A7 chip.
The first thing noticed in the teardown was a new connector for the TouchID fingerprint sensor assembly. Lining up with leaks leading up to the launch of the iPhones, it also found a 5.92Whr battery in the 5s (up from 5....

Early Measures Show Massive iOS 7 Adoption on Day One
It took some iPhone owners a while to get it, but a ton of Apple users downloaded iOS 7 on Wednesday — the first day it was available.
A study from advertising network Chitika showed that, less than 24 hours after being made available, iOS 7 was accounting for more than 18 percent of North American iOS traffic on the sites it tracks. That’s three percentage points higher than Chitika saw for iOS 6 in its first day.
“This level of adoption represents another proverbial feather in the cap of Apple, as it bests the impressive adoption rates of iOS 6 in the same time period last year,” Chitika said in a report to be published on Thursday. Meanwhile, Mixpanel said it saw even higher numbers.
Although...

How to use multiple Apple IDs in iOS 7
If you have been used to using different Apple IDs for different apps in iOS 6, you can still do that in iOS 7, but some of the details have changed.
One of the first complaints that came in was about Find My iPhone, with several people writing in worried that Apple had done away with the ability to use different Apple IDs with the app. But there is a 'Sign Out' button on the first screen. Simply tap that button, and you will be able to use a different Apple ID for Find My iPhone.
(Aside: you really should be using Find My iPhone, especially with the new improvements to it that came with iOS 7, which make it harder for anyone who might steal your iPhone to disable the feature.)
The same is also true for Messages, but the logout button is a bit harder to find. You have to go to Settings » Messages » Send & Receive. At the top of that window you will see the Apple ID...

iPhone 5c, 5s teardown by Australian repair shop
They're not due in the US until tomorrow, but it's already tomorrow somewhere in the world, and that somewhere is Australia. Well, that didn't make any sense, but the point is that some blokes at Sydney, Australia-based iExperts got their hands on some brand new iPhones and did a teardown before the guys at iFixit were able to do the same.
As usual, the devices are locked down with Pentalobe screws and require the use of a suction cup to remove the screen. The team noticed that there's a special cable that connects the Touch ID sensor on the iPhone 5s to the charging port assembly -- not sure of the reason, but I'd speculate that it's for grounding the sensor when the iPhone is docked and charging.
The batteries on the new devices have higher capacities that those of the iPhone 5 (5.45 Whr), with the iPhone 5s coming in at 5.92 Whr and the iPhone...

Even cats can unlock the iPhone 5s with the TouchID...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OFW6Va1m5k
Amusing little tidbit from TechCrunch:
I tested a colleague’s hypothesis that you could register the identifying skin segments of your favorite furry friends for Touch ID, too.
The cat’s paw worked, and while it encountered more frequent failures than did a fingerprint, it was able to unlock the phone again repeatedly when positioned correctly on the sensor. Note that no other paw pads would unlock the device, and that cats essentially have unique “fingerprints” just like people, so this doesn’t make the Touch ID sensor any less secure.
I wonder if a rabbit’s foot would work?

The OmniGroup has overhauled its iOS apps for the iOS 7 release, including creating a completely revamped OmniFocus on the iPhone that is just a joy to use. The Doc Picker makes its way over to OmniPlan 2 as well and adds an in-app purchase for importing Microsoft Project files.

The Week in iOS Apps: iOS Heaven
iOS Heaven
This week's roundup focuses on apps that have been redesigned or relaunched to take advantage of features in (or the hype surrounding) iOS 7. Read on.
Chrome
Somehow, the newest update to the free Chrome browser for iOS makes it both more Apple-y and more Google-y. Yes, it’s undergone a redesign to match the look and feel of iOS 7’s leaner, flatter aesthetic. But functionally, the app ties itself ever more into the Google universe as it exists on iOS: Links from Chrome now open in the YouTube, Google Maps, Gmail, Google Drive, and Google+ apps, provided you also have them on your iOS device. The iPhone might just be the best Android phone yet.

iOS 7: Weather app is easy on the eyes, still...
Another app that received a major overhaul in iOS 7 was the Weather app. The card-style design of the app has been stripped away, leaving in its place a lovely translucent UI with weather images in the background. It's about time Apple updated Weather, as the basic, boxy design has been around since the first iPhone debuted in 2007.
UI
The Weather app is now a full-screen app that allows Apple to fit additional weather data on the screen without making everything cluttered. The background is dynamic and changes based on the time of day and the weather conditions. It's a subdued background that is attractive on your screen and doesn't scream "look at me." To me, this is a good thing as it's the weather data that I want, not some vibrant pictures. The Weather app resembles the Yahoo...

Analyst: iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s Sales to Hit 6M on...
Thanks to limited inventory, Apple will likely sell between 5 million and 6 million iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s models combined during their first weekend of availability. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster expects that number could higher, but constraints on iPhone 5s inventory will limit just how much the company can sell.
The Mac Observer Spin:
If Apple's iPhone 5 inventory is extremely low and sells out during launch weekend the company can say demand is high, but if units are still available come next Monday it's a safe bet the media will rake the company over the coals regardless of how high or low inventory levels were.

Releasing an app is stressful. Once you've got a great idea you need to start development process of getting the art, code, and text in order. And when that's done, and your shiny new app is ready for release, you face the review process which is largely just a waiting game. How many days will you wait to find out if your app has been approved? Good news, now there's a way to find out.
Shiny Development is helping out with ReviewTimes, a site that roughly tracks the average time an app waits for Apple to review it for both the iOS and Mac App Stores. Using crowdsourced data from iOS and Mac developers on Twitter, the site provides an average of how long developers are waiting to get approval.
Developers submit their data by tweeting their latest review time with either #iosreviewtime or #macreviewtime. As of press time the average iOS Store wait time was seven days based on 425 reviews in the past 14 days, while...

Apple is running another new iPhone commercial. It's called "Plastic Perfected," and it's promoting the iPhone 5c. There's no voice over, and the soundtrack for the commercial is a song called "Rill Rill" by Sleigh Bells (though it's an alternate mix from the album version). Visually, the commercial features (computer generated) liquid plastic in several colors being poured into the shape of an iPhone 5c. It's very reminiscent of some of the early iMac commercials that features iMacs swirling around the screen. That, combined with the great music makes for a very compelling ad.
