Apple released security updates for Bash in OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, and Lion Monday afternoon to address the Shellshock flaw that became big news last week. How to Use iOS 8’s Photos Extensions

iOS 8 Extensions open the door for iPhone and iPad apps to share data and features, and that creates new potential for Apple's own Photos app and image editing. Third party image editing apps can now share their filters with the Photos app, but you need to know how to enable them first - which is fairly easy to do.

First Look: SwitchEasy 0.35, LifePocket + Numbers...

Three new cases from SwitchEasy represent a fairly wide array of different protective options for the iPhone 6. First up is 0.35 ($15), a 0.35mm thick layer of soft plastic sold in five colors. It just barely qualifies as a case thanks to the top, side, and back coverage, providing anti-scratch coverage but probably no help in the event of a drop; the bottom and screen are left entirely open. Next is LifePocket ($40), a wallet case with a nylon exterior,…

TMO Daily Observations: 2014-09-29

The bendy iPhone 6 thing is a big enough deal that even Consumer Reports is weighing in on the action. Kelly Guimont and John Martellaro join Jeff Gamet to talk about CR's findings and how much of an issue they think the bendable smartphone thing really is, plus they they share what they'd like to see linked into Apple's Health app.

News: Report: iOS 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 in simultaneous...

Apple is currently working on iOS 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 at the same time, according to 9to5Mac. The report claims that such a move away from Apple’s normal development cycle might show that the company won’t tie annual major iOS releases to typical fall hardware releases. Otherwise, Apple may be accelerating its iOS point release development while keeping iOS 9 for release next fall. It’s possible that the upcoming releases of 8.1, 8.2,…

iOS 8 Rollbacks Shut Down, Apple Stops Signing iOS 7...

If you made the move to iOS 8 but now are suffering from upgrader remorse, you're out of luck because Apple has stopped signing iOS 7.1.2. In muggle speak that means Apple won't let you downgrade from iOS 8 to iOS 7.1.2 any more.

The Mac Observer Spin: If you were on the fence about whether or not to keep iOS 8 on your iPhone or iPad, Apple took care of that decision for you. At least Apple waited longer than usual before shutting down the option to roll back to iOS 7.1.2.

Griffin has brought its expanded Survivor line — first seen for iPhone 5c — to iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, though a few of the names have changed again. The company's multi-layer Survivor case is now Survivor All-Terrain ($50-$60). The ultra-protective case houses an iPhone inside its polycarbonate shell, then surrounds it with a soft silicone outer layer. Screen and Touch ID protection is also built in, and the bottom ports and sleep/wake button…

News: French fashion retailer Colette to hold in-...

Paris-based fashion retailer Colette is teasing a “one day only experience” with Apple, to be held September 30th from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM local time. While no other details are available, it seems plausible that this may involve the recently-debuted Apple Watch, particularly since Apple has been working with the fashion industry to style and position the device as a fashion accessory. The invitation image clearly resembles the Apple Watch…

iPhone 6 Plus not so Bendy After All, Says Consumer...

Just how bendable is the iPhone 6 Plus? Consumer Reports says not very, and that smartphones from Apple's competitors are actually easier to bend. The independent product testing company pitted both new iPhone 6 models against smartphones from Samsung LG, and HTC and found the competition flexed and deformed easier, which sits in contrast to online videos claiming to show an iPhone 6 Plus bending in someone's hands.

The Mac Observer Spin: If you really want to bend or break something, you can find a way to make that happen. Apple's new iPhones don't seem to be any easier to bend than competing smartphones, but it seems the media is always looking for something to latch onto.
