Flight Attendants Sue to Stop Gate-to-gate...

Attorneys representing the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA argued in the U.S. Court of Appeals late last week that the ban on in-flight electronics the FAA lifted a year ago should be reinstated for the safety of airline passengers. The Flight Attendants union thinks portable electronics use during takeoff and landing poses a serious risk and that the FAA made a mistake when it opened the doors for airlines to allow their use from gate to gate.

The Mac Observer Spin: Unless flight attendants can come up with compelling evidence to show gate-to-gate electronics use is a serious safety risk, you'll most likely be able to keep playing Angry Birds on your flights. And with the ban lift nearly a year behind us, passengers wouldn't take going back to stowing their electronics very well at all.

News: Alleged iPad Air 2 parts leak shows A8X chip,...

Alleged components of Apple’s upcoming second-generation iPad Air were recently posted on Apple.club.tw, with a logic board that shows an A8X chip. While the iPad Air used the same A7 chip found in the iPhone 5s, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus contain an A8 chip, so it appears Apple will be once again making a separate processor for the iPad. The report also claims that iPad Air 2 will pack 2GB of RAM, as has been rumored. In addition to the…

How To Create a Mac Keyboard Shortcut For Print To...

You may have seen the "PDFâ" button lurking in the bottom of a print dialog, and you may have even used it from time to time to create a digital version of a document in a quest to reduce paper. If you haven't noticed it, there's a PDF button in the bottom left corner of the print dialog, so you can print something to PDF instead of having to use ink and paper. Sometimes you just need a PDF, so having this option built in is awesome. What's even more awesome is when you can save some time by creating a keyboard shortcut to do this for you automatically. David Sparks has covered this with the video below. It sounds odd, but trust me, this is the "microwave" of Mac tweaks. At first you'll wonder why you thought you needed it, and in a month you'll wonder how you lived without it. For bonus points, work a little dark magic with Hazel or other automation software and streamline a bunch of busy work so you can spend more time on important things, like your Netflix queue or learning to...

Some other products appear to have stagnated. Does the October 16 event invitation suggest a remedy? Is this even a problem? John Martellaro sizes up the promise of Apple's invitation.

GT Advanced Technologies Wants to Close Apple...

GT Advanced Technologies filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this week and now is asking the court for permission to shut down the factory where it has been making synthetic sapphire glass for Apple. The company's bankruptcy filing came as a surprise to everyone, including Apple, and its latest request likely isn't sitting well with the iPhone and iPad maker.

The Mac Observer Spin: Watching GTAT's implosion just hurts, and at this point it's hard to imagine the situation improving. Shutting down its sapphire factory doesn't bode well for Apple, either, because the Apple Watch launch is getting closer all the time.

Review: Uniq Aircraft Clear for iPhone 6

Coverage isn’t the main selling point of Aircraft Clear — the aluminum bumper covers the volume controls and sleep/wake button, and offers bottom port cutouts, but there’s really no lip to speak of on the front edges for protection. Simon & Schuster released Walter Isaacson's new book The Innovators on Tuesday. This book builds on the research begun for his killer biography Steve Jobs, but takes a much broader look at the many innovator who took part in the creation of "tech" as we know it today. The book also looks at folks such as Vannevar Bush, Alan Turing, John von Neumann, J.C.R. Licklider, Doug Engelbart, Robert Noyce, Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, Steve Jobs, Tim Berners-Lee, and Larry Page. From the publisher: "This is the story of how their minds worked and what made them so inventive. Both cases feature more exact camera cutouts than many cases we've seen so far for the iPhone 6.…

Review: Touchfire Case and Keyboard for iPad Air

By contrast with Logitech’s great keyboard and okay case bundle, Touchfire’s Case and Keyboard for iPad Air combines a good case with something that we hesitate to even describe as a “keyboard.” The signature piece in the set is a piece of floppy clear rubber with magnets on the left, right, and bottom edges, meant to be attached to your iPad’s screen as an overlay for the landscape orientation virtual keyboard.  …

How-To Make iOS 8 and iPhone 6 Work With Google Voice

Many users of the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models are finding it impossible to re-link with Google Voice for voicemail. When entering in the classic **004*1[GV-Number]# sequence users are seeing a "Setting Registration Failed" message instead of the happy success note. Fear no longer. Marcel Brown sorted this out and you have two ways you can enable Google Voice on your new phone. First is to call AT&T and have them set up "conditional call forwarding" for you, or you can set up the 3 big use cases all by yourself with some slightly different commands. "234567890" in Marcel's examples would be replaced with your Google Voice number, including area code:

Call Forward if Unanswered: *61*1234567890#
Call Forward if Unreachable: *62*1234567890#
Call Forward if Busy: *67*1234567890#

Set all three of these and you're good to go. To check the status of these enter *#61#, *#62# and *#67# respectively. To deactivate, enter ##61#, ##62# and/or ##67#. Enjoy!...

Review: Flote Orbit Tablet Stand

Orbit arrives in three pieces: a solid steel base that feels like it weighs nearly 20 pounds, a thick metal arm with a Philips head screw at one end and a concave magnet at the other, and a spring-loaded cradle with a ball on the back and rubber pads on its four fingers. Assembly is as simple as unscrewing the screw with a self-supplied screwdriver, sticking the bottom of the arm into the base, reattaching the screw and a washer plate under the base,…

Plastc Aims to be Your One-card Digital Wallet

Coin may have kickstarted the digital card to store all your creditcards, but Plastc thinks it has what it takes to leapfrog past its competitor and win a place in out wallets. With Coin months behind schedule, and its lack of chip and PIN support, Plastc could have a leg up in the all-in-one card game - assuming Apple doesn't run over both companies when it launches Apple Pay later this month.

Adobe goes Mobile with New Creative Cloud Updates

Adobe rolled out a collection of new and updated apps for the iPhone and iPad on Monday that make mobile devices a bigger part of your design process. Adobe's iPad app parade let you create graphics on your iPad and easily transfer them to Photoshop and Illustrator on your Mac through your Creative Cloud account.

The Mac Observer Spin: Adobe already owns graphic design on the desktop, and now the company wants to make sure it owns the market on our iPads and iPhones, too. Adobe gets that these are more than content consumption devices.

First Look: Logitech Type+ Case With Keyboard For...

Logitech's Bluetooth keyboard cases for iPads have generally followed a single rule -- the keyboard has been the same width as the iPad, for better or worse. The new Type+ ($100) breaks that rule, allotting enough width to the keyboard to give iPad Air users access to full-sized keys, including four rows of number and letter keys, plus a fifth row of half-height function keys. While the case itself isn't terribly impressive -- essentially a wraparound,…

There really shouldn’t be anything momentous about switching cellular carriers, but this year was different for me. After seven years of using AT&T, I finally switched to one of its competitors. Review: Seidio Dilex Pro with Metal Kickstand for...

While we’ve already seen quite a few cases for iPhone 6 similar to Dilex Pro, this case stands out in a few ways — some good, some bad. The fit isn’t as tight as we’ve seen on similar TPU or rubber/plastic cases, as it seems a bit too easy to pull the sides away from the phone. It’s nice that Seidio has included a kickstand for landscape viewing, and does so without adding bulk. But it’s a bit annoying to have to dig…

Surprise: Mac iWorm Spreads through Pirated Apps

When news of Mac.BackDoor.iWorm for the Mac hit the Web last week, the way the malware threat spread was still something of a mystery, but that's been uncovered now, too: pirated software. Like so many other malware threats, attackers are using the promise of free software as a trojan horse to trick victims trying to save a buck into installing the iWorm payload.

The Mac Observer Spin: Using pirated software as a trojan horse to install iWorm doesn't come as a surprise at all. Using stolen software is bad not only because hard working developers don't get paid for their work, but also because you could infect your Mac with malware.

How the Apple Watch Already Has Success Designed in

When a new product category arrives from Apple, like the Apple Watch, it can be hard to size up the future prospects. Some observers only have a dim idea about how customers will embrace and exploit the product, and they don't yet see how Apple works to design success into the very DNA of any new product. In time, however, it all becomes clear, and the naysayers seldom turn out to be right.
