Are You Ready for Apple’s Next Hardware Platform?...

There has been plenty of agitation for Apple to pull the next generation hardware technology out of a magician's hat. That thinking jumps the gun because Apple already has the ultimate hardware platforms in place to support its "Kit" initiatives. One of them is called the iPhone.

Apple Signals New Stance on Bitcoins and Other...

Apple has signaled a new stance on Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies with a change to its App Review Guidelines for the App Store. Though Bitcoin wasn't mentioned by name, for the first time Apple specifically stipulated that the "transmission" of "approved virtual currencies" would be allowed, a reversal from an unstated position that resulted in all Bitcoin wallets being kicked out of the App Store.

Reset The Net On June 5: Taking Back Online Privacy

June 5 is the day we Reset the Net, according to nonprofit Fight for the Future and raise privacy awareness. This means taking personal action to help secure some data, whether you're a user, developer or site owner.

The Mac Observer Spin: This is a great idea, and I hope they're sucessful. A lot of the suggestions for tools are easy to use, so even more people can take basic steps. I really like the possibility that this could help keep governments from breathing down my neck, my own included. Add in the options for developers of apps and of websites, and it could really make a difference.

iOS 8 gets Wi-Fi Calling Support, T-Mobile Already...

When iOS 8 launches this fall, it'll include a great feature that wasn't mentioned in Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference keynote event on Monday: Wi-Fi calling support. The feature lets Wi-Fi networks handle voice calls -- saving user's talk minutes -- and T-Mobile has already committed to let its iPhone customers join in.

The Mac Observer Spin: Wi-Fi calling support has already been available to Android and Windows smartphone users, so it's nice to see Apple finally getting on board. Now we just need Verizon and AT&T to let their customers use the feature, too.

Analyst: WWDC Announcements Should’ve Included...

Apple's two hour keynote event to kick off its annual Worldwide Developer Conference Monday morning was filled with details about OS X Yosemite, iOS 8, and developer tools, but it didn't include any new hardware announcements, and Wells Fargo analyst Maynard Um says that was a disappointment.

The Mac Observer Spin: No new hardware at WWDC isn't a cause for disappointment. Had Apple failed to show any level of innovation during the keynote would've been more of a concern, and there was plenty to be pleased with from HealthKit to app extensibility in iOS 8, to improved file sharing and syncing, and more. The hardware will come, and it'll get its own media event.

So Long, iPhone 4: Apple Drops Support in iOS 8

The iPhone 4 joined the ranks of the original iPhone, iPhone 3 and iPhone 3GS on Monday as another device Apple is leaving behind. When iOS 8 ships this fall, it won't include support the older iPhone model, which means you'll need at least an iPhone 4S to try out the new features Apple announced earlier today.

The Mac Observer Spin: Apple maintains backwards compatibility for older hardware longer than many other companies do, but it isn't surprising to see the iPhone 4 dropped from the supported device list for iOS 8. Running iOS 7 on the iPhone 4 was frustrating, and several features weren't supported at all. iOS 8 would've been an exercise in pain on the iPhone 4.

It isn't any secret that Apple will be showing off OS X 10.10 during its Worldwide Developer Conference keynote event Monday morning, but until now there have't been any images showing what to expect from the next version of the Mac operating system. Four photos, however, appeared -- and then were pulled -- at Reddit showing a more iOS 7-like flat look is in store for the next OS X update.

The Mac Observer Spin: Regardless of whether or not these leaked OS X 10.10 photos are legit, it makes sense that the Mac OS will start to look more like iOS over time.
