ACM 260: Google I/O, Nest and Giving Up Our Privacy

Google's I/O conference keynote happened earlier today and the Internet search giant made it clear it wants a place on our wrists and in our homes. Jeff Gamet and Bryan Chaffin talk about why it's up to Apple to think outside the box in the wearables market, what Google's plans means for our personal privacy, and how they feel about Nest sharing our information with Google.

Google I/O 2014 Keynote Highlights: Wear, Cars, and...

Google kicked off its own developer conference Wednesday, titled Google I/O, with a keynote address. Not content with just phones and tablets, the Android OS has extended to cars and TVs and watches too. With health tracking.

The Mac Observer Spin: Different approaches to the same issue are a good thing. It's fascinating to watch Google show an alternate path. I was really interested until I saw that giant slab of glass on each presenter's wrist.

The SmartPlane, a Smartphone-Controlled Aircraft: $...

Longtime readers know that I love toys, especially when they're controlled from my iPhone or iPad. Check out the SmartPlane, a biwing airplane that can be controlled from most iOS devices and some Android devices. It uses Bluetooth LE (Bluetooth Smart) for controlling, and the company said pairing is easy from the custom control app. It works with iphone 4S or newer; iPod touch 5th Gen or newer; iPad 3rd Gen or newer; iPad mini. On the Android side, you need Bluetooth Smart and Android 4.3 or newer. There's a video showing the plane in use, but please don't be that guy that buzzes passersby. Through our deal, the SmartPlane is $49.99.

Supreme Court Says Cell Phone Searches Require...

In a decision that backs up the idea that cell phones and smartphones deserve the same privacy protections from the government as other parts of our lives, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled police must obtain search warrants before looking through the contents of our iPhones. Previously, law enforcement agencies could look through text messages, email messages, photos and more on smartphones to collect evidence without using search warrants.

TMO Daily Observations: 2014-06-25

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of TV networks and against Aereo's online streaming video business, and in a separate ruling said police need a search warrant to look at what's on our smartphones. Kelly Guimont and John Martellaro join Jeff Gamet to talk about both, and Jeff gets his rant on over protecting our personal privacy.

Supreme Court Rules Video Streaming Company Aereo...

The U.S. Supreme Court handed Aereo a ruling on Wednesday saying the online video streaming company has been violating copyright law by transmitting broadcast TV content over the Internet. Fox, NBC, ABC, and other broadcasters accused Aereo of essentially stealing their programming and reselling it through a paid online service.

The Mac Observer Spin: Regardless of whether Aereo should've been allowed to continue or be shut down, the Supreme Court ruling takes away one of the options available to viewers looking for ways to break free from cable and satellite TV channel packages.

Report Claims iPhone 6 Launching Sept 19

Apple is reportedly planning on launching the still unannounced iPhone 6 on September 19, according to sources speaking with the Chinese media. The company's track record makes a September release plausible, but expecting unnamed sources who are probably in the parts supply chain to know Apple's product launch plans seems unlikely.

The Mac Observer Spin: Apple hasn't made any announcements about new iPhone models, so for all we know the next model includes holographic displays and pink buttons. That said, the company's track record points to a September launch, and the 19th sounds like as good a date as any.

Boinx Software Wants to Build PartySnapper With Your...

One of the Boinx employees built a prototype of an app to display (via projector) the photos guests were taking at his wedding, and at the end all the photos were also stored on his device, so he had all those pictures immediately instead of waiting for email and Dropbox and Facebook and whatever other way people share photos. Now Boinx wants to turn this into a real app, but coding isn't cheap so there's now an Indiegogo campaign to help make that happen. I say help because each dollar raised in the campaign gets matched by two Boinx dollars. This is really a way to measure interest in the app before investing significant resources into it. As with all crowd funding campaigns, there are perks and these range from one "party ticket" for US $5 all the way up to the $5,000 level which gets you food, drinks, and a room in Munich to come party with the Boinx crew at Oktoberfest (travel costs excluded). If you feel particularly generous, there are million dollar (Apple CEO level) and...
