Apple posts iOS 8.0.2 update, chases down Touch ID,...

This may avert another 24 hours of iOS update crisis.

Per MacRumors, Apple on Thursday released iOS 8.0.2.

The update, which is available as an over-the-air update or via iTunes, includes the bug fixes that were included in the original iOS 8.0.1 update as well as repairs Touch ID and cellular services.

After installing iOS 8.0.1 yesterday, many iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users found that their cellular service was disabled and that Touch ID was non-functional. Apple pulled the iOS 8.0.1 update approximately an hour and fifteen minutes after it was first released, but not before numerous iPhone users were able to download the software. The company announced an investigation in the afternoon, and in the evening, released a support document saying iOS 8.0.2 was in the works and directing users...

Apple offers video tour of iPhone testing facility

Continuing to fight back against claims that the iPhone 6 Plus is structurally unsound and prone to bending in people's pockets, Apple has given some tech reporters a tour of the iPhone quality testing lab, showing that it does and did test the new iPhone to simulate situations like those seen in videos to aggravate or cause bending. The original instigator of the furor has noted that his iPhone 6 Plus was slightly bent right out of the box -- opening up the possibility that some batches, rather than the phone itself, could have structural issues....

Apple Redoubles Efforts to Fix iOS 8 Glitches

Apple on Thursday announced it's preparing iOS 8.0.2 -- which will include a fix for problems triggered by iOS 8.0.1 -- and plans to release it in the next few days. In a rare move, Apple on Wednesday suspended downloads of iOS 8.0.1, which aimed to fix problems uncovered after the launch of iOS 8. What's more, it recommended a downgrade for owners of Apple's new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus who lost their cellular service and use of their phone's Touch ID fingerprint reader due to the flawed iOS 8.0.1 update.

FBI Chief: Apple, Google Phone Encryption Perilous

An anonymous reader writes The FBI is concerned about moves by Apple and Google to include encryption on smartphones. "I like and believe very much that we should have to obtain a warrant from an independent judge to be able to take the contents," FBI Director James Comey told reporters. "What concerns me about this is companies marketing something expressly to allow people to place themselves beyond the law." From the article: "Comey cited child-kidnapping and terrorism cases as two examples of situations where quick access by authorities to information on cellphones can save lives. Comey did not cite specific past cases that would have been more difficult for the FBI to investigate under the new policies, which only involve physical access to a suspect's or victim's phone when the owner is unable or unwilling to unlock it for authorities."

Inside the building where Apple tortures the iPhone 6

The Verge:

A few blocks away from Apple’s bustling campus in Cupertino is a rather nondescript building. Inside is absolutely the last place on earth you’d want to be if you were an iPhone. It’s here where Apple subjects its newest models to the kinds of things they might run into in the real world: drops, pressure, twisting, tapping. Basically all the things that could turn your shiny gadget into a small pile of metal and glass.

I got a tour of this part of Apple’s operation many years ago and was very surprised to see just how much stress testing Apple did in-house on everything.

∞ Apple’s statement on the iPhone 6 bending

Here is a statement Apple provided to me today about the iPhone bending:

“Our iPhones are designed, engineered and manufactured to be both beautiful and sturdy. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus feature a precision engineered unibody enclosure constructed from machining a custom grade of 6000 series anodized aluminum, which is tempered for extra strength. They also feature stainless steel and titanium inserts to reinforce high stress locations and use the strongest glass in the smartphone industry. We chose these high-quality materials and construction very carefully for their strength and durability. We also perform rigorous tests throughout the entire development cycle including 3-point bending, pressure point cycling, sit, torsion, and user studies. iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus meet or exceed all of our high quality standards to endure everyday, real life use.

With normal use a bend in iPhone is extremely rare and through our first six days of sale, a total of nine...

Today, i reinitialised one of the clients with 10.8.5 for some issues with Adobe suite, after removing it from the Xsan system regularly But now, after putting back everything where it was (Name, IP, DNS, and activating the Xsan client), The computer does not appear in the list of the Xsan Admin when i want to add it, no matter what i do.

There wasn't much that needed to be fixed in Bowers & Wilkins' superb C5 In-Ear Headphones, a 2011 model that wowed us in looks, comfort, and sonics. But B&W has updated C5 with the new C5 Series 2 ($180), which for the same price promises "redesigned drive units for enhanced sound quality." iOS 8.0.1 Update Includes Bug Fixes, Kills Service

Apple released iOS 8.0.1 on Wednesday, a week after the initial iOS 8 release. Reports are flooding in about the update causing Touch ID and cellular connectivity to stop working altogether, so it may be best to hold off on this update at least in the short term.

TMO Daily Observations: 2014-09-24

Turns out you can bend the iPhone 6 Plus if you try, but is that as big a deal as people are making out? Kelly Guimont and John Martellaro join Jeff Gamet to look at what's up with iPhone 6 bendability and iPhone durability, discuss Apple's purchase of the digital magazine design and publishing platform Prss, and go old school with some Wild Wild West talk.

News: Apple releases iOS 8.0.1

Listed as “containing improvements and bug fixes,” iOS 8.0.1 notably addresses the issue that affected use of HealthKit by third-party apps revealed last week. Other improvements and fixes include issues with third-party keyboards, apps accessing the Photo Library, reliability of the Reachability feature on the iPhone 6, fixes for…

How to Use PayPal with iOS 8 Family Sharing

Apple's Family Sharing in iOS 8 is something many users are eager to setup in order to finally deal with the issue of sharing purchased apps (and music and movies and more) with family members. Frustration has set in for some, however, when the setup process informs users that PayPal is not a valid payment option for family purchases. The good news is that you can set PayPal as an option after Family Sharing is setup, at least for now.

A recent change to Apple’s release notes for the Apple TV Software Update 7.0 indicates that iOS 8’s new Peer-to-Peer AirPlay feature will actually be limited to the “Rev A” third-generation Apple TV released in March 2013. Peer-to-Peer AirPlay is a new feature that allows users to wirelessly stream content to an Apple TV from an iOS 8 device or Mac running OS X Yosemite without having to connect to a host Wi-Fi network. News: Report: iPhone 6 Plus costs only $15 more to...

Although Apple sells the iPhone 6 Plus at a $100 premium over its smaller sibling, a new report from research firm IHS cited by Bloomberg suggests that the larger iPhone 6 Plus model actually only costs Apple an additional $15.50 to manufacture. The report notes that main cost increase comes from the larger screen, although the camera and battery components also cost slightly more. It goes on to note that both iPhone 6 models are still more expensive…

News: Apple acquires Digital Magazine Platform PRSS

Apple has acquired a small Dutch digital magazine startup, according to a new report (translated link) from Dutch Apple blog iCulture. The company, PRSS, launched in 2012 as a way to allow users to easily create digital magazines for the iPad Newsstand platform without requiring iOS coding or development experience. While neither Apple nor PRSS has confirmed the acquisition officially, TechCrunch received a boilerplate statement from Apple that “Apple…

Apple Buys Prss iPad Magazine Publishing Platform

Apple has purchased the digital magazine design company Prss, which could be a sign that the iPhone and iPad maker plans to do for periodical design what it did for books with iBooks Author. Prss started life as the production tool for the award winning iPad magazine Trvl and was spun off as its own company in 2013.

The Mac Observer Spin: If Apple is planning on offering its own digital magazine design tools, that could open substantially lower the bar for hopeful publishers. Depending on what Apple offers along with Prss's tools, it could eat into expensive digital magazine publishing platform sales.

Apple Features ‘Actual Size’ iPhone 6/Plus in...

On the back cover of the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine* is an ad for the new iPhone models. It's labeled "Actual Sizes," showing off how big the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus actually are. I took a photo of the ad with my iPhone 5s next to it, also shown actual size (compared to the other two). I'm not sure where else the ad will be appearing, but with nearly 1.5 million subscribers, that's a lot of people who could be getting a good look at the new devices for the first time. Clever move to make them actual size, the first thing I did was set my phone on each one for comparison. Well played, Apple.

* Magazines are like blogs from the olden days, printed on paper and mailed to people.

iPhone 6 Review: Bigger, Better, and BIGGER

Apple went big with its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus introduction - with the launch event and screen size. Both models are bigger than any iPhone Apple has made before, and very noticeably so. That size, however, does come with some benefits like faster processors, better cameras, and even support NFC-based mobile payment systems. Compared to the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, the new models really are a lot bigger, and for some people, the extra features may not be worth the size increase. Read on to see if the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are worth the price for you.

Man Bends iPhone 6 Plus with Bare Hands on Video

With reports (Google Translation) popping up claiming Apple's new 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus can get bent just by being in your pocket, YouTube channel UnboxTherapy did a bend test on the device. There's no sense beating around the bush about it, either, because Lewis bent it. With his hands. His bare hands. It required a lot of effort, but he did it. he was focusing his efforts on the middle, but it turned out that it bent in the area near the buttons. That makes sense in hindsight, because the spot with the holes is going to be the weakest point in the case. It also matches the bends that are showing up from people complaining about bends from their pockets. Note that the device continued to work even after it was bent, but at the very least, this is an argument against keeping the beast in your pocket, even it it fits. Also, Apple could have a problem on its hands.

We first saw Orbotix's Ollie ($100) by Sphero at CES 2014 and were immediately impressed. Unlike Sphero (review) and Sphero 2.0 (review), Ollie isn't a robotic ball — it's a quick little app-controlled robot with two wheels. Although it's not waterproof like the prior Sphero balls, Ollie can reportedly move at speeds up to 14 mph, and Orbotix claims it can run for one hour of play on a full three-hour USB charge. Several MacRumors readers have reported cases of iPhone 6 Plus units actually bending while being carried in pockets, merely days after the device launched. One user reported discovering that his new iPhone 6 Plus had bent slightly after only about 18 hours of sitting in a front suit pocket. While the problem of iPhones bending slightly isn’t new, the much larger but thinner profile of the iPhone 6 Plus increases the likelihood of this occurring,…

iOS 8 Adoption at 46%, or Maybe 35%

Apple's iOS 8 has reached a 46 percent adoption rate only six days after it was released, according to the company's developer site data. Tracking services Appsee and Mixpanel, however, are showing a lower adoption percentage at around 35 percent, which still accounts for a substantial number of iPhones and iPads upgrading in just a week.

The Mac Observer Spin: iOS 8 is trailing a little behind iOS 7's first week adoption rate, and that may be because some features are waiting on OS X Yosemite's release for the Mac. We could see a jump in updates once Yosemite is available.
