This week in the MacNN Forums "subego" started a thread that appears to be showcasing some of the bazaar interpretations Apple's new predictive text in iOS 8 creates, either that or he is simply trying to live up to his "Clinically Insane" ranking by spewing incoherent gibberish. Today a Fresh-Faced Recruit who goes by the name "Swervage" has started a rather unusual thread lashing out at Apple for not making Mavericks compatible with Palm Pilots, going as far as saying that this is "monumentally moronic" of Apple....

Apple’s rebranding of Beats Music streaming service...

Yesterday news broke that Apple was reportedly going to shut down its newly purchased Beats Music streaming service which Apple quickly dismissed as false although it does sound like changes for the brand and service are in the works as you might expect. Re/code’s John Paczkowski shared today that such a rebrand could be slated for February:

Now that we’ve established that Apple is not “shutting down” Beats Music, the streaming service that Tim Cook in May lauded as the “first music subscription service that really got it right,” and we’re all agreed that it makes far more sense for the company to dump the Beats Music brand and integrate the service into an offering of its own, we can move on to another more interesting question...

News: iPhone 6 Plus users reporting bending iPhones

Several MacRumors readers have reported cases of iPhone 6 Plus units actually bending while being carried in pockets, merely days after the device launched. One user reported discovering that his new iPhone 6 Plus had bent slightly after only about 18 hours of sitting in a front suit pocket. While the problem of iPhones bending slightly isn’t new, the much larger but thinner profile of the iPhone 6 Plus increases the likelihood of this occurring,…

iOS 8 adoption nears 50 percent after just 6 days

iPhone and iPad users still flock to download the latest version of iOS as it becomes available, but perhaps not as quickly as before.

According to Apple's developer portal, iOS 8 adoption now stands at 46 percent, while 49 percent of users are still on iOS 7. The remaining 5 percent are using “earlier” versions.

iOS 8 launched on Wednesday, September 17, which means the new version has been available for about six days. Apple didn't provide official data at this point last year, but several third-party metrics firms claim that uptake of iOS 8 has been slower than the previous version.

iOS 8 Adoption at 46%, or Maybe 35%

Apple's iOS 8 has reached a 46 percent adoption rate only six days after it was released, according to the company's developer site data. The Mac Observer Spin: iOS 8 is trailing a little behind iOS 7's first week adoption rate, and that may be because some features are waiting on OS X Yosemite's release for the Mac. We could see a jump in updates once Yosemite is available.

Do Specs Matter Anymore For the Average Smartphone...

ourlovecanlastforeve writes: While reviewing a recent comparison of the Nexus 5 and the iPhone 6, OSNews staffer Thom Holwerda raises some relevant points regarding the importance of specs on newer smartphones. He observes that the iPhone 6, which is brand new, and the Nexus 5 launch apps at about the same speed. Yes, they're completely different platforms and yes, it's true it's probably not even a legitimate comparison, but it does raise a point: Most people who use smartphones on a daily basis use them for pretty basic things such as checking email, casual web browsing, navigation and reminders. Those who use their phones to their maximum capacity for things like gaming are a staunch minority. Do smartphone specs even matter for the average smartphone user anymore? After everyone releases the biggest phone people can reasonably hold in their hand with a processor and GPU that can move images on the display as optimally as possible, how many other moons are there to shoot for?...

The iPhone 6 Plus has a content problem

I purchased an iPhone 6 Plus on Friday to replace my iPhone 5s and an iPad mini Retina. I figured that the large, 5.5-inch screen on the 6 Plus would allow me to consolidate two devices into one.

It turns out that while the concept of an iPhone-6-Plus-as-an-iPad (think iPad nano) sounds good in theory, it fails in practice.

The iPhone 6 Plus ships with a different build of iOS 8 (12A366) than the iPhone 6 (12A365) which allows it to do a few new tricks that aren’t possible on its smaller 4.7-inch cousin. Most notably, the iPhone 6 Plus home screen can be rotated to a horizontal (or “landscape”) view with the dock running along the right-hand side.

Another new trick: the 6 Plus home screen be flipped 180-degrees...

Although it remains unclear when this is expected to happen, all sources point to Apple planning to discontinue…

Western Digital My Passport Wireless

Western Digital's My Passport portable hard drives have all been appealingly small and ready to take pretty much anywhere -- except that they've depended on a computer for connectivity and power. A six-hour rechargeable battery and 802.11n MIMO Wi-Fi enable the 1TB or 2TB hard disk to stream media content to up…

News: Report: iOS 8 adoption rate estimated at 30%

Several research and analytics firms have reported that iOS 8 adoption has reached 30% following the first weekend of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales, based on in-app analytics reported by Fiksu, Mixpanel, Appsee, and Chitika. While this number is up from the estimated 15% adoption following the initial iOS 8 public release last week, it still falls short of the almost 50% of users that had updated to iOS 7 by this time last year. The higher adoption…

Linex Technologies Ordered Apple’s Legal Fees in...

Patent holding company Linex Technologies has been ordered to pay Apple and several other companies US$18.6 million to cover legal expenses in lawsuits it filed in a failed patent infringement fight. The company claimed that Apple, HP, Aruba Networks, Meru Networks, and Ruckus Wireless infringed on wireless communication patents it holds, but the court ultimately ruled those patents were invalid.

The Mac Observer Spin: Sometimes the whole patent troll scheme just doesn't pay off.

iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus Launch Weekend Sales Hit 10...

Launch weekend sales for Apple's new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus hit the 10 million mark, coming in above last year's iPhone 5s launch at 9 million units. Apple CEO Tim Cook said this year's launch numbers would've been even higher if more inventory had been available.

The Mac Observer Spin: It seems Apple can't make the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as fast as it can sell them. The company has also managed to beat its opening weekend sales every year since the original iPhone was launched.

Fun Rant about Those Who Claim Apple is the Copier

I got a tip Saturday about a new blog called Tim Cook's Id, with the subheading "what Tim Cook id is really thinking." I'm not sure if that's the case, but the inaugural rant is a beauty about those claiming Apple is the real copier in the mobile world. It's titled, "Anyone saying Apple copied Samsung/Google with a big screen phone is a $%&# idiot," which cuts to the chase. It's also invective-filled and spewy, but it's a solid assessment of the mental gyrations necessary to come to such a conclusion. TCI takes aim at Android fans, Apple haters, Judge Lucy Koh, the U.S. Department of Justice, tech journalists, Wall Street, and Jim Cramer, and that's just for starters. Hopefully this isn't a one-off. Enjoy.

AT&T’s Next Plan May be the Cheapest Way to Buy...

When AT&T first introduced its Next plan earlier this year it was received with a lot of skepticism and negativity. Most reports advised against it saying it was a bad deal, would cost more, and wouldn't let you keep your phone if you wanted to. For Dave Hamilton none of those things are true and they may not be true for you, either. You may find that AT&T Next is the best deal you can get, especially if you're on a family plan with multiple phones.

As much as I love Google's ability to find exactly what I want, I've grown concerned about the amount of data they collect from my searches. You've probably experienced that lovely phenomenon of casually searching for a product and then seeing ads for that same product all over the 'net. Luckily for those concerned about such things, there's DuckDuckGo, a search engine that makes privacy its number one concern. Even more luckily, Apple's added it to iOS 8's list of search providers.

First iPhone 6 Sold in Perth Dropped by Kid During...

The young man who bought the first iPhone 6 in Perth, Australia-where the iPhone 6 has already gone on sale-dropped it during a local TV news interview. The reporter got him to open the box for the cameras, but when he did, the iPhone slipped out and followed the gravity train straight down onto the concrete. There are no details-yet-on what exactly happened to the device, but the young man is seen picking at the screen before the cameras stop. Holy smokes, but do I feel for this kid. If it broke, I hope Apple replaces it for him, if the retail store didn't already do it on the spot. [Via Macworld tweet.]

iOS 8 In-Depth Review: Apple Opens Mobile OS to...

Apple laid the groundwork for the future of its iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch operating system last year with iOS 7, and now the company is building on that foundation with the launch of iOS 8. Instead of shocking us with a new look that shuns the old skeuomorphic feel -- that happened last year -- Apple is giving us tighter integration between our mobile gear and our Macs, and making features we're already familiar with more useful. Apple promised lots of great new features, but many of those won't be available until next month. Is there enough today to justify making the jump to iOS 8, or should you follow Apple's lead and wait until October, too? Read on to find out if iOS 8 is ready to meet your needs today.
