HealthKit apps begin appearing on App Store

Following the release of iOS 8.0.2, HealthKit-enabled apps are beginning to reach the App Store. One of the first is noted to be FitPort, a dashboard that serves as an alternative to iOS 8's own Health app. HealthKit was supposed to premiere alongside iOS 8.0, but Apple briefly delayed it citing bugs....

∞ Apple’s statement on the UNIX Bash vulnerability

Apple provided me with the following statement today:

“The vast majority of OS X users are not at risk to recently reported bash vulnerabilities. Bash, a UNIX command shell and language included in OS X, has a weakness that could allow unauthorized users to remotely gain control of vulnerable systems. With OS X, systems are safe by default and not exposed to remote exploits of bash unless users configure advanced UNIX services. We are working to quickly provide a software update for our advanced UNIX users.”

Clearly, most users do not use the advanced UNIX services.

Apple says most Mac users are safe from '...

Yes, recent versions of Mac OS X are vulnerable to the critical “Shellshock” Bash bug revealed earlier this week, including OS X Mavericks—but don’t sweat it unless you’re doing ninja-level Unix tricks with shell commands already.

That comes straight from Apple, which provided iMore with the following comment on the Shellshock bug:

“The vast majority of OS X users are not at risk to recently reported bash vulnerabilities… With OS X, systems are safe by default and not exposed to remote exploits of bash unless users configure advanced UNIX services. We are working to quickly provide a software update for our advanced UNIX users.”

Apple puts iPhones through the wringer to prove #...

Only nine people complained to Apple about the

iPhone 6 Plus bending in their pockets
, but that’s not going to stop the Internet from joking about #Bendgate. So the company is trying to manage its PR crisis by opening the doors to its super
secret testing facility. Yes, Apple puts its new phones through the ol’ sit-down test.

About 15,000 iPhone 6 and 6 Plus units were tested before the devices began shipping last week. That’s a drop in the bucket compared to the more than 10
million phones Apple has sold so far, but the sample devices were run through various scenarios that they might endure day-to-day. Then they were tortured.

He has however been with Apple since 2000, and has been handling quality issues for iOS since the early days of the iPhone....

Bent iPhone 6 Plus? There’s a Replacement for That

If you're among the massive horde nine people suffering from a bent iPhone 6, Apple will replaces it for you - assuming it hasn't been intentionally twisted out of shape, of course. You'll have to make a trip to your Apple Store's Genius Bar for a visual inspection, and if your 6 Plus is deemed worthy of replacement, you'll head back out the store with a flat iPhone.

The Mac Observer Spin: Of course Apple is replacing bent iPhones. That's the right thing, and the smart thing, to do.

Conan O’Brien joins in on the bent iPhone 6 ribbing...

Apple’s new iPhones have sold quite well, but their launch hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing. From hardware issues to botched software, the Cupertino-based software giant has had a lot on its plate over the past few days and of course critics have been quite vocal about the company’s recent challenges. Recently, late night TV funny man Conan O’Brien joined in on the Apple ribbing by putting together a bogus Samsung ad that offers a solution to troubled iPhone owners.

While Samsung most likely didn’t have anything to do with this gag, we’re pretty sure the company has no issues with mainstream media poking fun at its biggest competitor and with well...

880K Creditcards Stolen in TripAdvisor’s Viator Data...

Tripadvisor's Viator service said credit card information for some 880,000 of its users has been compromised in a data breach where customer data for 1.4 million subscribers was taken. Unauthorized charges have been showing up on some subscriber's cards, and Tripadvisor is currently saying it isn't sure how the attackers gained access to the user data.

The Mac Observer Spin: Considering how many online database breaches are happening, maybe companies need to work on finding a better way to manage our creditcards. Alternately, users can turn to apps like 1Password that auto-fill creditcard information so it's stored locally instead of on a remote -- and potentially hackable -- server.

An inspection of the aircraft will be required before each flight, and nighttime operations will be prohibited.

Prss started life as the production tool for the award winning iPad magazine Trvl and was spun off as its own company in 2013.

The Mac Observer Spin: If Apple is planning on offering its own digital magazine design tools, that could open substantially lower the bar for hopeful publishers. Depending on what Apple offers along with Prss's tools, it could eat into expensive digital magazine publishing platform sales.

Apple Features ‘Actual Size’ iPhone 6/Plus in...

On the back cover of the latest issue of Rolling Stone magazine* is an ad for the new iPhone models. It's labeled "Actual Sizes," showing off how big the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus actually are. I took a photo of the ad with my iPhone 5s next to it, also shown actual size (compared to the other two). I'm not sure where else the ad will be appearing, but with nearly 1.5 million subscribers, that's a lot of people who could be getting a good look at the new devices for the first time. Clever move to make them actual size, the first thing I did was set my phone on each one for comparison. Well played, Apple.

* Magazines are like blogs from the olden days, printed on paper and mailed to people.

iPhone 6 Review: Bigger, Better, and BIGGER

Apple went big with its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus introduction - with the launch event and screen size. Both models are bigger than any iPhone Apple has made before, and very noticeably so. That size, however, does come with some benefits like faster processors, better cameras, and even support NFC-based mobile payment systems. Compared to the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, the new models really are a lot bigger, and for some people, the extra features may not be worth the size increase. Read on to see if the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are worth the price for you.

Man Bends iPhone 6 Plus with Bare Hands on Video

With reports (Google Translation) popping up claiming Apple's new 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus can get bent just by being in your pocket, YouTube channel UnboxTherapy did a bend test on the device. There's no sense beating around the bush about it, either, because Lewis bent it. With his hands. His bare hands. It required a lot of effort, but he did it. he was focusing his efforts on the middle, but it turned out that it bent in the area near the buttons. That makes sense in hindsight, because the spot with the holes is going to be the weakest point in the case. It also matches the bends that are showing up from people complaining about bends from their pockets. Note that the device continued to work even after it was bent, but at the very least, this is an argument against keeping the beast in your pocket, even it it fits. Also, Apple could have a problem on its hands.

First Look: Orbotix Ollie by Sphero

We first saw Orbotix's Ollie ($100) by Sphero at CES 2014 and were immediately impressed. Unlike Sphero (review) and Sphero 2.0 (review), Ollie isn't a robotic ball — it's a quick little app-controlled robot with two wheels. Although it's not waterproof like the prior Sphero balls, Ollie can reportedly move at speeds up to 14 mph, and Orbotix claims it can run for one hour of play on a full three-hour USB charge. The customizable Ollie connects…

News: Apple quietly pulls back on 2014 CarPlay...

Apple appears to be quietly pulling back on its promise of 2014 availability for CarPlay technology, with an update to its CarPlay page now removing any indications of 2014 availability for specific models. Apple originally announced earlier this year that CarPlay would be “available in select cars shipping in 2014”, and several other manufacturers including Audi, Hyundai, and Volvo had originally indicated that they would be delivering…

News: iPhone 6 Plus users reporting bending iPhones

Several MacRumors readers have reported cases of iPhone 6 Plus units actually bending while being carried in pockets, merely days after the device launched. One user reported discovering that his new iPhone 6 Plus had bent slightly after only about 18 hours of sitting in a front suit pocket. While the problem of iPhones bending slightly isn’t new, the much larger but thinner profile of the iPhone 6 Plus increases the likelihood of this occurring,…

iOS 8 Adoption at 46%, or Maybe 35%

Apple's iOS 8 has reached a 46 percent adoption rate only six days after it was released, according to the company's developer site data. Tracking services Appsee and Mixpanel, however, are showing a lower adoption percentage at around 35 percent, which still accounts for a substantial number of iPhones and iPads upgrading in just a week.

The Mac Observer Spin: iOS 8 is trailing a little behind iOS 7's first week adoption rate, and that may be because some features are waiting on OS X Yosemite's release for the Mac. We could see a jump in updates once Yosemite is available.

Several research and analytics firms have reported that iOS 8 adoption has reached 30% following the first weekend of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sales, based on in-app analytics reported by Fiksu, Mixpanel, Appsee, and Chitika.
