Apple Sells Nine Million New iPhones, Tells...
Some analysts thought Apple might sell five million new iPhone 5c and 5s models this weekend. More optimistic estimates topped out at around eight million.
So, this is a nice surprise, at least for Apple shareholders: The company says it sold nine million of its new devices since they went on sale on Friday.
Apple feels good enough about the sales to tell investors that they should have high expectations for the quarter. In a filing with the SEC this morning, the company told investors that it “expects total company revenue for the fourth fiscal quarter to be near the high end of the previously provided range of $34 billion to $37 billion, and expects gross margin to be near the high end of...

iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c Launch Weekend Sales top 9...
Apple's iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c launch weekend sales hit 9 million units, killing concerns that numbers would fall flat. The company's previous opening weekend iPhone sales figures came last year when the iPhone 5 hit 5 million.
The Mac Observer Spin:
The anti-Apple crowd says Apple has lost its ability to innovate and that interest in the iPhone is waning. First 64-bit smartphone, fingerprint scanner technology, built-in motion and fitness coprocessor, and record breaking opening weekend sales. It looks like "failure to innovate," and "no interest" don't mean what these people think it means.

External Link: Touch ID Already Defeated
The Chaos Computer Club has already figured out how to defeat Touch ID, the fingerprint scanner in the iPhone 5s, with a fake finger. The method involves taking a 2400 dpi picture of a fingerprint, laser printing the image, then smearing latex on top to create a mold. Starbug, the hacker who performed the tests, said that the main difference between Apple’s sensor and others is that Apple’s has a higher resolution.

Apple has quietly launched a new category in the App Store: Kids. First announced at WWDC, the newly launched category features apps curated by Apple's editorial staff, appealing to children of certain age ranges including sections for: "Best for Ages 5 & Under", "Best for Ages 6-8", and "Best for Ages 9-11."
Besides sub-categorizing apps by age range, the Kids section also features game specifically aimed at children aged infant to 11, brands (like Disney) with apps that appeal to children, and kid-specific collections like "Create &Play," "Shapes & Colors," "First Words & Numbers," and more.

iOS 7: I Love It, I Hate It
I am simultaneously excited and saddened by iOS 7 on my iPhone 5. My first impression? All over the freaking map. iOS 7 is at once a fantastic and fresh update, while it's also full of maddeningly stupid icons, buttons and colors. It has better customization, a more intimate and lively feel -- and yet, you're stuck with a palette of soft-but-too-bright pastel-ish colors.
The red? That's not red. It's a travesty, and I'm not color blind. Imagine the color palette applied to your car. If you like that idea, iOS 7 is for you.

iPhone 5s more than three times as popular as the 5c...
Data from Localytics shows that the iPhone 5s appears to be outselling the iPhone 5c by a factor of 3.4. The data is based on examining web analytics from 20M unique iPhone connections to mobile and web apps between launch and 8pm last night.
In less than 3 days, the iPhone 5s and 5c combined now represent about 1.36% of the total numbers of all iPhones activated in the U.S. market across the top 4 carriers AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint and T-Mobile. From the data we are seeing, 1.05% of all iPhones in the United States are now iPhone 5s and just 0.31% are iPhone 5c.
This pattern is unlikely to be maintained in the longer-term: as the higher-end device, the 5s was...

OS X update doubles 802.11ac Time Capsule's...
Well, it took a while, but Apple has finally resolved whatever problem was causing wireless file transfers using its new 802.11ac MacBook Air and Time Capsule to be so slow. If you haven’t already updated to OS X 10.8.5, do it now.
When I benchmarked the new router last June, I noticed that real-world file transfers were much slower than the WiFiPerf benchmark indicated they should. WiFiPerf was reporting TCP throughput of more than 450 megabits per second (mbps) at close range, but transferring large files and large groups of files (10GB in each scenario) happened at less than half that speed.
Once I updated the MacBook Air with the latest version of OS X (10.8.5, which includes a patch to AirPort Utility), and the Time Capsule with Apple’s newest firmware (version 7.7.1), real-world wireless file-transfer speeds more than...

When it Comes to Heartiness, SquareTrade Says Moto X...
The Moto X has the upper hand on the new iPhones when it comes to durability, at least according to testing by gadget insurer SquareTrade.
Its testing showed both new iPhones underperforming the iPhone 5 model they replace.
“When it comes to breakability, Apple takes a step back with its latest offerings,” SquareTrade said in a report being released on Monday. “The iPhone 5S fared worse than its predecessor, the iPhone 5, in our slide test and the iPhone 5C suffered from increased smash-ability in our drop test as well as reduced grip-ability.”
The Moto X outpaced both new iPhones, while Apple’s new phones finished ahead of the Galaxy S4 which fared worst in the four-way comparison.
“We were expecting that at least one of the new iPhone models would up its game but surprisingly, it was the Moto X that proved most forgiving of accidents...

'Fake finger' successfully used to bypass...
A group in German claims to have successfully worked around Apple's new Touch ID biometric system, albeit using an extremely elaborate system to do so, involving a high-resolution lifted fingerprint and creating a "fake finger" that mimics a real one that has the lifted fingerprint printed onto latex milk or wood glue and then applied -- and of course physical access to the iPhone that utilizes that particular fingerprint. A different hacker group is offering a reward for such a solution, including cash, Bitcoins, liquor and books as a reward....

Ahead of his conversation on stage at Apps World with Wired.co.uk's editor Nate Lanxon, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak spoke to us about his view on new iPhones, wearable technologies, the future of apps, and Google Glass.
Steve Wozniak "These young people with new ideas starting out—sometimes for the first time—are my favorite people in the world," Steve Wozniak tells Wired.co.uk. "It reminds me of when we started Apple."
Since doing so in the 1970s with Steve Jobs, Wozniak has turned much of his attention, time, and money to education and new businesses. Presently serving as chief scientist at flash storage company Fusion-io, he also readily invests in new technologies and applications. "The best things that capture your imagination are ones you hadn't thought of before, and that aren't talked about in the news all the time," says Wozniak.

Chaos Computer Club hackers trick Apple’s TouchID...
Germany's Chaos Computing Club claim to have tricked Apple's new TouchID security feature this weekend. In a blog post on the breakthrough, the CCC writes they bypassed the fingerprint-reader by simply starting with "the fingerprint of the phone user photographed from a glass surface."
The entire process is documented by hacker Starbug in the video above, and the club outlines it in a how-to. For this particular initiative, the CCC started by photographing a fingerprint with 2400 dpi. Next the image was inverted and laser printed at 1200 dpi. To create the fingerprint mask Starbug finally used, latex milk was poured into the pattern, eventually lifted, breathed on (for moisture), and pushed onto the sensor to unlock the phone. In this sense, it's hard to definitively state the hackers "broke" the...

iPhone 5s ships times get pushed back to October
Following in the footsteps of most of the world, shipping times for orders placed this weekend for the iPhone 5s have fallen to October. Unlike the rest of the world, where ship times for the 5s began at 7-10 days, it was only 1-3 days in the US. However, those ship times slipped to 7-10 days as Friday's launches got underway, and now Apple's online store simply says "October" for any iPhone 5s orders placed this weekend.
Interest for the iPhone 5s has been incredibly strong since the phone went on sale. Part of that is because it's Apple's latest iPhone, but another reason could be because supplies are extremely limited, reportedly due to manufacturing bottlenecks. The iPhone 5c, which has been well received by critics and fans, still ships within 24 hours for orders placed in the US.

CCC Says Apple iPhone 5S TouchID Broken
hypnosec writes with word that the Chaos Computer Club claims to have "managed to break Apple's TouchID using everyday material and methods available on the web. Explaining their method on their website, the CCC hackers have claimed that all they did was photograph a fingerprint from a glass surface, ramped up the resolution of the photographed fingerprint, inverted and printed it using thick toner settings, smeared pink latex milk or white woodglue onto the pattern, lifted the latex sheet, moistened it a little and then placed it on the iPhone 5S' fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone."

“Biometrics hacking team” uses photographed...
In a rather nervous video and associated blog post, Chaos Computer Club appears to demonstrate how they can get through Touch ID by taking high-resolution photographs of a fingerprint. Ironically, they claim the hack can be completed with “materials that can be found in almost every household” then go on to say that a 2400 dpi resolution photograph of the fingerprint must be used.
The group claims that Touch ID was only a little bit more difficult to get through compared to other fingerprint sensors, since the iPhone 5s’ scanner is extremely high-resolution. They go on to state that fingerprints should not be used as a secure method of authentication since they are left on so many surfaces and can be picked up very easily.

Apple Pulls Apple TV 6.0 Update to Fix Bricking Issue
Apple on Saturday withdrew the latest software update for its Apple TV following reports that it rendered some devices on which it was installed unusable.

How an engineer earned 1.25 million air miles buying...
I find this sort of thing fascinating.
Healthy Choice was having a promotion on their frozen entrées section. The offer was as follows: for every 10 bar codes of their product a person sent in, they’d be awarded 500 Air Miles. However, the company had an early bird stipulation that people who redeemed the offer within the first month of the competition would receive double that, meaning a person could potentially receive 1000 Air Miles for buying just 10 of their entrées.
Upon catching wind of the deal, David scoured his local supermarkets to see which, if any products offered the best potential return. After some legwork, he found what he was looking for- a discount grocery chain that was selling individual chocolate pudding cups for 25 cents each. This meant that for a measly $2.50, he could get 1000 Air Miles.
He spent $3,000 on pudding, donated all the pudding, then turned in the bar codes and got more than a million air miles (about $150K in value)....

How to improve your iPhone battery life under iOS 7
This article has some excellent suggestions for steps you can take to improve your battery life under iOS 7. I’ve played around with these for a few days and can tell you that these have made a huge difference in my battery usage. The two changes I think made the most difference (your mileage may vary) for me were setting my brightness to 50% (still plenty bright) and reducing the motion of the user interface. With the latter, I do lose the parallax effect, which I do miss, so I’m going to turn that setting off so I get parallax back, see how that affects my battery life. Note that this is the same setting that addressed Shawn’s motion effects post from yesterday.

While the level of out-there wacky on this story may be atypically high, the core issue is all too common; this is the sort of brain-dead article that always comes out any time an Apple product includes technology that's new, or not yet popular (as noted, fingerprint ID is neither new in general nor new on a...

Almost the exact 2x Apple promised and great for people doing big videos. Also notable from Macsfuture:
The iPhone 5s’ Geekbench score of 2552 is close to the score of the “Early 2010” version of the Mac Mini.
So it seems that Apple’s processors are about 3-4 years behind Intel’s currently. If Apple’s Ax processors keeps doubling speed every year and Intel struggles to keep up with Moore’s law, it doesn’t take a Computer Science major to see what’s going to happen in a few years.

Design: As the name implies, the iPhone 5s is based directly on the design of the iPhone 5. It has the same shiny edges, metal back with glass top and bottom caps, and front that is dominated by the display. The only tell-tale signs that the 5s is not a 5 are the slightly tweaked Home button design, larger rear camera flash, and if you opt for one of the two new color options.

New iOS 7 bug lets you make non-emergency calls from...
Forbes reported late Friday that a new bug has been discovered in devices running iOS 7. This time, the bug lets a person with physical access to a phone to place any kind of call from the “Emergency Call” screen—even to international numbers and premium numbers (like adult chat lines and tech support numbers).
To produce the bug, simply type any number into the Emergency Call screen, then rapidly tap the Call button until the phone brings up an empty screen with an Apple logo. At that point, the phone is making the call to the number requested.
Just one day after the release of iOS 7 this week, a first bug was discovered...

This morning, Bloomberg Businessweek has published the entirety of its interview with Apple CEO Tim Cook. Earlier this week, the magazine gave us a look at its conversation with Cook, Jony Ive, and Craig Federighi, though today’s article is a much more extensive look at the thoughts from Cook.
Notably, Cook discusses the new fingerprint scanner Touch ID system in the iPhone 5s. Cook seems to enjoy that users can unlock their iPhone with the touch of a fingerprint, but he seems to imply that purchases with Touch ID are the bigger picture. He notes that Touch ID can now be used to download items from Apple’s online...

For some people, the font sizes on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch are too small. Sometimes, these small fonts prevent people from using or purchasing the iOS devices. Thankfully, there are multiple solutions to this potential issue. Below, we’ve rounded up the old fixes and new fixes in iOS 7:

iOS 7 How-to: Have your iOS device read text for you
Previously, I discussed how to have your iOS device read text for you in iOS 6, and in iOS 7 it works pretty much the same way – but with some little differences.
As in iOS 6, there are two different ways to make text speakable on an iOS device. But before we do that and discuss how to do it, let’s first set up our iOS device so we can do it:
Open up Settings, tap on General, and tap on Accessibility.

BlackBerry just announced another disaster quarter and is currently valued at under the value of its assets, yet despite public pleading, no one wants to buy them. They also just laid off 4,500 of their remaining employees and left the consumer market.
But we’re not here to talk about the horrific financials of an imploding company. We’re here to bring the news that Blackberry released BBM (a very capable IM client) for iOS and Android today. It is currently available in Eastern hemisphere countries and is making its way around the globe.
In 2008, this would have been bigger news. Now, you can use it to ask your remaining...

Multi-path TCP allows your phone to send data by whatever way it’s connected to the internet, whether that’s Wi-Fi, 3G or ethernet. This is the first time that this new means of connecting to the internet has appeared in a commercial product.

iOS 7′s motion effects are triggering vertigo and...
Stuff:
A major change in Apple’s iOS 7 update was its sleek, minimal aesthetic; however, the amount of motion now found within is anything but minimal.
The net result: “It feels to me like the whole screen is moving, and it generates a sort of motion sickness. I feel dizzy and can feel the very beginnings of nausea kicking in.”
It’s not as bad as full on motion sickness for me but I do find the animations to be annoying eye candy I wish I could toggle off.

Caturday: Gorky catches a mouse
Yeahhhh, it's a good thing that those USB mice operate at a low voltage and current, since Gorky the cat has apparently decided that the "tail" of this mouse was good enough to eat. Gorky's human Jeffrey H. let us know that this was the first time that he had caught a mouse...
We'd love to see photos of your favorite feline soaking up the warmth of an Apple product, chasing a Magic Mouse, or just being a general nuisance while you're attempting to work on your Mac, iPad, or iPhone. Please let us know via our feedback page and please remember that your cat photo has to have some sort of connection to Apple or its products. For security reasons we can't accept inbound attachments, so you should host the photo (Dropbox, Flickr, iPhoto Journals, etc.) and send us the link.

Cracker of Apple’s fingerprint scanner to win booze...
A prize of more than $19,000 (and counting) in cash, bitcoins, and booze is being offered to the first hacker to crack the fingerprint scanner on Apple's newly released iPhone 5S.
The contest is being run by a micro venture capital firm and a group of security researchers and requires the hacker who wins the prize to "reliably and repeatedly break into an iPhone 5s by lifting prints (like from a beer mug)," according to the website istouchidhackedyet.com.
Touch ID, the fingerprint scanner present on the more expensive of Apple's two new iPhones, is supposed to make users' personal details more secure and can also be used to make iTunes purchases. The scanner offers a 500 pixel-per-inch resolution and can read sub-epidermal skin layers, storing encrypted fingerprint data (although, crucially, not images of the prints themselves) locally...

Grand Theft Auto V generates $1B in three days
One billion dollars in 3 days. Wow. For comparison, it took Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 16 days to hit $1B, back in January 2012. Then Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 hit $1B in 15 days this past December. 3 days is astonishing.
Grand Theft Auto has been keeping Take-Two afloat during the down times, as the series has an extremely long tail (the volume of sales over time following release). Not only does a new release spike revenues, but it also incentivizes gamers to investigate the back catalog (sometimes spurring purchases of already owned games on new platforms). GTA V will be even more significant should the title see staggered releases on PC and next-generation platforms (as I suspect it will). At this point, Call of Duty is going to have a nearly impossible time beating GTA’s sales this year, ending a four-year streak.
With numbers like these, it is no wonder that Apple has added...

What it's like to wait in line for an iPhone
What makes people give up a few hours of their time—or even an entire night—to stand outside of a store waiting for the doors to open so that they can buy a phone? As Apple has proven time and again, they’re not waiting for just any phone. And if the crowds gathered outside of Apple Stores on Friday are any indication, the iPhone 5s looks likely to stir just as much passion as its predecessors.
To gauge just how much passion, though, we went down to the Apple Store on Stockton Street in San Francisco and spent some time talking to just a few of the hundreds of people waiting in line. We wanted to find out what made them wait around for their chance to be among the first to get their hands on an iPhone 5s. And we also wanted to see if anyone had any love to give the overlooked iPhone 5c.
Elsewhere on the site, you’ll find our...

The "gold rush" was a series of events generally considered to have lasted for much of the second half of the 19th century -- until Friday, when Apple officially sold completely out of the gold iPhone 5s model around 10AM ET. Within hours, many of the lucky few that secured a gold iPhone 5s were listing them on eBay and other auction sites. Asking prices have been seen in excess of $2,500, and active interest and bids have appeared as high as $3,850 (for a group of three gold 64GB models). There are currently over 2,000 iPhone 5s eBay auctions in progress....

The streams crossed: Mixpanel shows iOS 7 adoption...
There you have it: Mixpanel's data is showing that the number of iOS devices running iOS 7 just surpassed the number running iOS 6 after only three days. What do we have to say to the Android world at this juncture in history? This: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX7wtNOkuHo
The rapid adoption of iOS 7 vividly demonstrates the advantages of having a "closed" ecosystem in which the hardware manufacturer also controls the operating system. Not only are Apple's devices uncluttered with bloatware from carriers and manufacturers, but everyone in the ecosystem can get an update at pretty much the same time, delays caused by overworked servers or having really old equipment notwithstanding.
We're sure that there's going to be some debate about whether or not this...

New iOS release overtakes iOS 6 as most popular iOS...
ISPs monitoring traffic spikes noticed a huge one just minutes after the official release of iOS 7, with reports from some providers that data usage doubled compared to normal levels. Late on Friday, the new iOS version overtook iOS 6 as the most popular, less than 48 hours after the upgrade first became available. Analytics company Mixpanel estimates that more than 130 million users had updated their devices within the first 10 hours of availability, out of a potential iOS 7-eligible base of 415 million....

Second bug found in iOS 7, lets users avoid passcode...
As has happened with previous iOS releases, real-world user testing has uncovered a few bugs that slipped through the months-long beta process. Yesterday marked the discovery of the first serious bug, a method of bypassing iOS 7's lock screen security -- however, the flaw was complicated to achieve, easily avoided by simply disabling Command Center's optional ability to appear on the lockscreen prior to user passcode entry. The new issue takes advantage of a glitch in the emergency call feature to allow users to make regular phone calls, bypassing the passcode lock....

iOS 7 after a couple of days
Our brains are pattern-making machines. When our patterns are disrupted, it takes some time to build new pathways and embrace the future. So it is with iOS 7, Apple's first major overhaul of its iPhone operating system (now iOS) since the iPhone debuted in 2007. I wrote up some very quick impressions as I used iOS 7 in New York, but here's what it's like a few days in.
Music
Music and sound has always been a part of the Apple experience. After a couple of days of using iTunes Radio I don't know if I will use my other music apps nearly as much. That's not to say Pandora, Slacker, TuneIn, Spotify, Rdio or other services don't have value. They absolutely do, but the integration, polish and choice available on iTunes Radio is going to quickly gain mind share in the market. Not to mention the audio quality is quite good and adding channels is easy. There are few commercials, and what little there are don't sound...

A series of unfortunate events at the Pasadena Apple...
Today was an exciting day at the Apple Store in Pasadena, California as the launch of the new iPhone 5s and 5c turned ugly. The L.A. Times is reporting that at least 200 people were waiting in front of the store this morning for a chance to buy one of the new phones when several fights broke out.
Two people, ages 23 and 43, were arrested for fighting in line outside of the store before it even opened. Then around 9 a.m. another fight started, this time involving a contender for worst person in the world. A man hired several van loads of homeless people from a downtown Los Angeles homeless mission with the promise of paying them $40 if they'd wait overnight in line.
When the man left the store with several iPhones this morning, the people he hired...

iOS 7: See the timestamp on every Messages bubble
With iOS 7 officially out of the bag, there are no shortage of tips coming in highlighting many of the new tweaks users can expect to see in Apple's new mobile OS.
One particularly welcome addition to iOS 7 is the ability to view timestamps for individual text messages. To do so, simply swipe to the left while in a conversation view and timestamps appear on the right-hand side of the screen.
As an example, here's what a typical iMessage conversation might look like.
With a quick swipe to the left, I can now see at which time each individual message was sent. This is a great new feature seeing as how previous versions of iOS would often group together messages, sent many minutes apart, under the same timestamp.
Note that this feature works for iMessages and texts sent via SMS as well.
As a comical aside as we head into the weekend, does anyone recognize the 'Venus de milo gummy bear' reference from above?...

Aardman's Full Steam Ahead edu-app shows great...
You know Aardman Animations, don't you? Cheese? Gromit? Were-Rabbits? They've teamed with the Science Museum and Brunel's s Great Britain to create Full Steam Ahead, a free educational app that teaches children about ship design.
In each stage of the app, you're presented with a basic design. It's up to you to iteratively improve that design -- whether for load bearing or stability, and so forth -- to learn about a basic underlying engineering concept.
It's a brilliant idea and beautifully presented, but it's one that's showing quite a lot of early instability. In my testing, it repeatedly crashed on a clean, rebooted iPad. I was able to re-launch and pick up my exploration, but the sheer number of crashes really got on my nerve.
Being a developer, I...

Apple Tapped Samsung to Build Its New A7 Chip
Much as it would probably like to, Apple hasn’t yet been able to shift the manufacturing of the A7 processor that powers its new iPhone 5s away from Samsung. The research firm Chipworks confirmed Friday that the chip is indeed being fabricated by Apple’s nemesis. Evidently nothing much came of that rumored deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, so Apple must continue to rely on Samsung for important components like these despite the nasty rivalry between the two companies.

iOS 7: Activation Lock secures your device in case...
Find my iPhone in iOS 6 was great for locating your lost or stolen phone and for locking down your data, but it had a major flaw. A tech savvy thief could restore the phone, remove the SIM card and walk away scot free with your phone. Thanks to an enhancement to Find My iPhone called Activation Lock, a thief's ability to remove every trace of the previous owner from an iPhone is now limited. The stronger security offered by Activation Lock may be a deterrent for thieves looking for an easy grab and go sale.
Activation Lock improves Find My iPhone by preventing a person from disabling Find My iPhone without knowing both the Apple ID and the account password of the original owner. The person who has the iPhone also can't restore it nor reactivate it without these account credentials. They can only stare at the phone number and a custom message that asks the person with the phone to return it to its rightful owner.
To use Activation Lock, you must first turn on Find My...

iPhone 5s slaps down competitors in early benchmarks
Zach Epstein at BGR gives us a good, yet short summary of a rather lengthy (13 pages) review of the iPhone 5s posted on Anandtech by Anand Lal Shimpi. In his article, iPhone 5s slaughters its quad-core rivals in performance tests despite having "just" a dual-core CPU and 1 GB of RAM. Zach notes that this is the "most thorough [technical] review" to date. Shimpi's article quickly grew to 40 pages with the addition of user comments.
Falling into the speeds and feeds trap when discussing mobile devices can be tricky, especially when the specs that smartphone vendors share most frequently only paint a small piece of the picture. It's easy to look at things like CPU cores and clockspeeds and make assumptions, but dozens of factors contribute to a smartphone's performance. --Zach Epstein
