3D renderings compare Samsung’s iPhone-like Galaxy...

Earlier this month Samsung announced yet another Android handset dubbed the Galaxy Alpha that many observers noted borrows design cues from the iPhone 5 first introduced by Apple nearly 2 years ago. The Galaxy Alpha does feature a metal frame with chamfered edges, but does it really favor the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s or is it more Samsung than anything else?

Designer Martin Hajek has created a new collection of 3D renderings to help visualize that comparison and answer that question showing Samsung’s Galaxy Alpha handset side-by-side with Apple’s iPhone 5s.

Seaworld’s most rewarding and traumatic job

Outside:

What follows are a series of surprising and shocking conversations in which the three talk about the rewarding and challenging sides of their jobs, from teaching a newborn orca how to eat to disposing of dead animals and witnessing dolphin mothers kill their calves.

Despite the often difficult nature of the work, Horton, Payne, and Dodge were dedicated to caring for the animals. “Animal care is the one thing that SeaWorld can be proud of,” Horton says. “We were the unsung heroes.”

Here are Horton, Payne, and Dodge in their own words.

There are good and bad aspects to the capture and study of these animals in these kinds of parks. I fall on the side of not doing it but I understand some of the reasons for having these animals in captivity. Regardless of your opinion, this is an interesting story from the point of view of those with the animals every day.

Skype announced today that it’s finally fixing the way notifications work for users with multiple devices by only delivering chat notifications to the device you’re actively using. If you’re signed into Skype on multiple devices like your Mac, iPhone and iPad, Skype will now recognize which device you’re actively using to chat and only send notifications to that device. It will also notice when you stop actively using a device and continue sending notifications to all devices. The changes are only for chat, however, as call notifications will continue to come through on all devices you’re signed into:

The moment you stop actively using Skype on any device, all devices will receive notifications again to make sure you never miss anything important. When you pick up any one of your devices to respond, we will stop send...

RunKeeper Wants to Give You Presents for Working Out

Exercise may be its own reward, but RunKeeper thinks a little something extra couldn't hurt so it teamed up with Kiip to give its app users rewards for meeting new workout goals. The rewards will be offers for free or discounted health and fitness-related products, which sounds a lot like in-app ads, but the company is working to present them in a way that doesn't offend users and actually gives them something of value.

The Mac Observer Spin: RunKeeper has always taken pride in the fact that it doesn't offer in-app advertising. This new deal with Kiip walks right on that line, so it'll be interesting to see if users feel like they're really being rewarded for working out, or being pushed ads.

Amazon lists a Samsung Galaxy Gear for $150, a Gear Live for $180, a Gear 2 Neo for $200, a Pebble Steel for $230, and an LG G Black Titan for $233. Apple's rumored and highly anticipated iWatch won't make it to store shelves this year thanks to production issues. That's the word from KGI Securities analyst Ming Chi Kuo who said the device is proving to be very difficult to build thanks to a new manufacturing process Apple had to develop and the use of several specialized components.

The Mac Observer Spin: Apple is pretty good at keeping secrets, so it's possible the iWatch will launch this fall. That said, unexpected manufacturing issues could lead to a 2015 release, which would be unfortunate for Apple because it would miss out on the holiday buying season.

Microscopic analysis, iOS 8 code point to new 4.7-...

Adding to the pile of supposed "iPhone 6" parts leaks, a report out of Russia claims to have put a display bound for Apple's 4.7-inch handset under the microscope, while new code discovered in Xcode suggests at least one new iPhone model will carry a 1,472-by-828-pixel resolution.

Latest Xcode 6 SDKs hint at possible iPhone 6...

A PLIST file in the past two Xcode 6 beta SDKs may point at more possible resolutions for the iPhone 6. Specifically the file is connected to the iOS 8 homescreen, and refers to a 16:9 resolution of 414x736. Because the iPhone SDK handles hardware resolutions through point values, actual Retina resolutions should be two to three times greater. That suggests that 828x1472 and 1242x2208 are possibilities, both of which would have enough pixel density on 4.7- and 5.5-inch screens to maintain Retina status....

Video shows new, reversible USB cable for iPhone 6

Last week presented us with a look at a new cable rumored to be coming from Apple with the iPhone 6. This new USB to Lightning cable has a reversible USB connector, meaning you can insert it into an ordinary USB port in both orientations just like the Lightning end. Now MacRumors points us toward a video, posted by the same person as earlier photos, showing the cable being plugged in both ways.

Ok, not super exciting to watch, but still interesting. The video appears to show the actual Apple retail box for the cable as well. Besides this, there are other rumored capabilities including the use USB 3.1 which may be related to support for high-definition audio playback.

MacRumors poses the question of whether Apple will run into legal action from companies such as the California-based company...

Setting it apart from past Stem cameras, Izon View's newest…

That information translates into a lot of options for users. They can find bars that attract a younger crowd, the most scenic hiking trails, or the hippest coffee shops, for example. Jetpac has covered some 6,000 cities around the world using this approach.

KGI says iWatch/iBand launch could be pushed to 2015

According to a new report from KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the much anticipated launch of Apple’s “iWatch” could be delayed into 2015. Kuo claims that difficulties with manufacturing the new device will likely be the cause of the delay:

We reiterate our view that iWatch, as compared to existing products, and as Apple’s (US) first attempt at a wearable device, represents a much higher level of difficulty for the company as regards component and system design, manufacturing and integration between hardware and software. While we are positive on iWatch and believe that the advantages of the design and business model behind it are difficult to copy, we think, given the aforementioned challenges, that the launch could be postponed to 2015.

Kuo, who has a...

External Link: In Defense of Email

Email is far from hip these days. Pundits and investors salivate over ways to replace it with something more modern, but The Atlantic’s Alexis Madrigal argues that it’s still the best part of the Internet. Despite its many flaws, it’s universal, decentralized, and isn’t commercial. In fact, Madrigal argues that it may be users’ best hope of taking the Internet back from large tech firms.

News: iOS 8 beta suggests 1472x828 resolution, more...

An iOS 8 preference list file has been found with an iPhone resolution of 736x414, reports 9to5Mac, which would translate to a Retina “2X” screen resolution of 1472 x 828. At a 4.7” screen size, this would be around 359 pixels per inch (PPI), versus a 307 PPI resolution for 5.5” — the latter just enough pixel density to qualify as a Retina display. If displayed on a 4” screen, this would equal 422 PPI. Previously, 9to5Mac…

iOS 8 turns up evidence of another possible iPhone 6...

Early this year, we heard from a source that Apple had been testing multiple resolutions for the iPhone 6’s larger display, including a resolution of 960 x 1704. As we outlined, the benefit of that resolution is that it allows both developers and consumers to smoothly transition to the new display without losing high-quality imagery and graphics found in many applications from the App Store. At that density on both a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch display (the two larger screen sizes for the next iPhone), all content would display larger in comparison to the current, 4-inch iPhone, but there would not be more actual screen real estate. Now, we’ve discovered another potential iPhone 6 screen resolution by way of iOS 8 files inside of the latest Xcode 6...
