Apple To Remove Abandoned Apps From The App Store

Apple has issued an email to its community of developers indicating that it will remove apps that are outdated or no longer work. "We are implementing an ongoing process of evaluating apps, removing apps that no longer function as intended, don't follow current review guidelines, or are outdated," Apple wrote. TechCrunch reports: In addition to search ads and extensions in many different apps in iOS 10, Apple plans to remove all these useless apps that clutter the App Store search pages. And Apple is not going to stop at abandoned apps. The company will also fight spammy app names. For instance, if you search for "Instagram" on the App Store, one of the first results is an app that is called "[app name] Photo Collage, Picture Editor, Pic Grid, F...
and then it gets cut off. With this SEO strategy, app developers can trick App Store searches. If you search for "pic collage," chances are you're going to find this app. Apple wants clean names to make App Store searches relevant...

Apple will implement App Store improvements on Sept...

Apple on Thursday announced to its developer community some changes to make the App Store experience better for customers. Starting on September 7, Apple is instituting two suggestions made by its developer community.

Quality apps

First, Apple will perform a bit of quality control of the apps already in the App Store. An app will be removed from the App Store if the company deems it “problematic” and “abandoned” after an evaluation process and contacting the developer, who has 30 days to update the app to keep it in the App Store.

Apple will remove apps that crash when launching, though the company’s documentation doesn’t state what devices are being used to test this.

The European Commission's decision to force Apple to pay Ireland billions of dollars in back taxes is "total political crap" and a reflection of anti-U.S. sentiment, company CEO Tim Cook told the Irish Independent in an interview published Thursday.

"No one did anything wrong here," Cook said. "Ireland is being picked on, and this is unacceptable."

The EC ruled on Tuesday that Ireland gave Apple illegal tax benefits by not collecting €13 billion ($14.5 billion) in taxes owed to it over a 10-year period. It was the culmination of a two-year investigation into the company's tax affairs that found Apple's effective tax rate on profit reported in Ireland was just €500 per million euros...

If there’s a feature that’s good for Snapchat, it’s bound to show up somewhere else.

The latest piece of inspiration is a new feature for Facebook Messenger called Instant Video. It allows you to host a video chat inside of an existing chat conversation.

This way, if you want to show off what you’re doing or just desire a more personal moment you don’t have to exit the chat and launch a separate video call.

The feature is rather similar to a capability found in Snapchat. This move by Facebook comes recently after Facebook-owned Instagram essentially built its own version of Snapchat inside of its social network, even calling it Instagram Stories.

Apple has sent a note to developers saying it will implement two new suggestions “to make it easier for customers to find great apps that fit their needs” from the developer community starting Sept. 7 (which just happens to be the data of Apple’s next media event).

One of those changes is shorter app names. In hopes of influencing search results, some developers have used extremely long app names which include descriptions and terms not directly related to their app. Apple says that these long names are not fully displayed on the App Store and provide no user value. App names developers submit in iTunes Connect for new apps and updates will now be limited to no longer than 50 characters.

Apple is also cracking down on quality. The company says that there are apps on the App Store “that no longer function as intended or follow current...

Earlier this week, Apple was ordered to pay a record sum of 13 billion euros plus interest after the EU said Ireland illegally slashed the iPhone make's tax bill. In a new interview, he had more things to say:A war of words has erupted between Europe's competition chief and Apple CEO Tim Cook after Ireland was ordered to reclaim $14.5 billion in back taxes from the company. Cook, in an interview with the Irish Independent, labelled Brussels' competition chief Margrethe Vestager's decision as "total political crap." He claimed Ireland was being "picked on" and that he hoped to see the Irish government launch an appeal against the ruling. Vestager refuted that claim when quizzed by reporters on Thursday. Opinion: How Apple is likely PR-managing the loss of...

Apple has never been afraid to declare that technology has moved on, and that something we all thought of as essential is now legacy equipment. It did this first with the 3.5-inch floppy drive, omitting it from the iMac G3 in 1998 because Steve Jobs held the view that the CD-ROM had rendered the medium obsolete.

Apple was also one of the first companies to abandon optical drives, with the MacBook Air being the first Mac to launch without one in 2008. The company of course later dropped optical drives from the Retina MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and iMac.

Finally, in launching the 12-inch MacBook, Apple also declared that every prior port except the headphone socket was no longer necessary.

Each time Apple has done this, there have been anguished complaints and negative press. Apple has weathered the storm each time, and other manufacturers tended to quietly follow Apple’s lead a little later. But in seemingly planning to abandon the oldest and best-...

Worldwide smartphone shipments are expected to reach 1.46 billion units with a year-over-year growth rate of 1.6% in 2016 according to the latest forecast from the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker

The rumored removal of the headphone jack on an “iPhone 7” and the expectation of a significant hardware refresh in 2017 – the tenth anniversary of the iPhone – are contributors to the first full-year decline in iPhone shipments in 2016. However, IDC does expect a rebound in 2017 and beyond as iPhones reach nearly a quarter billion units in 2020.

In terms of share, IDC doesn’t expect much to change as Android will maintain greater than 85% of the smartphone market

Although smartphone growth remains positive, it is down significantly from the 10.4% growth in 2015, according to IDC. Much of the slowdown is attributed to...

Apple’s wrap around display patent adds validity to...

A newly granted Apple patent (number 9,367,095) for an “electronic device with a wrap around display” will only further fuel speculation that “iPhone 8” in 2018 will sport a, well, wraparound display.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that, in the last few years the functionality of portable electronic devices has increased “exponentially” and that further improvements be realized by investigating ways to maximize the utility of unused portions of these devices.

Apple says the majority of portable electronic devices have settled into a standard form factor; namely a flat planar form factor with a display on one side and an opaque housing which contains the electrical components covering the rear surface of the device. This popular form factor leaves the sides and rear surfaces of the device unused or at best configured with buttons and switches with fixed location and functionality, the company adds.

Since many of these buttons and switches...

NetMarketShare: Mac OS X and iOS were both down in...

According to the latest market share survey from NetMarketShare, the market share for Mac OS X dipped again in August, while iOS rose a bit.

According to the report, among desktop operating systems, Mac OS X had 7.37% of the global market share in August, down from 7.87% percent in July (that’s global market share; in the US it’s over 13%). April 2016’s 9.2% was an all-time high, according to NetMarketShare’s measurements. Windows remains dominant with 90.52% as of August.

iOS had 27.20% of the mobile operating system market share in August, down from 27.84% in July. This compares to 66.87% for Android, 2.30% for Windows Phone, and 1.62% for Java ME. The all-time high for iOS was in July 2012 with 65.94%.

NetMarketShares’ monthly surveys don’t measure market share in terms of computer systems sold. Instead they sample data from visitors to some 40,000 web sites operated by their clients. And note that...

Tim Cook: EU ruling on Apple’s back taxes is ‘total...

C’mon, Tim, tell us what you really think! Apple CEO Tim Cook has branded the European Commission ruling that Apple must repay 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) in back taxes “total political crap.”

Speaking to the Irish Independent, he claimed Ireland had been "picked on.” he added that Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager "just picked a number “from I don't know where.”

Cook also suggested the $14.5B "retroactive" tax bill was an attempt by the EU to grab taxes owed to the U.S. treasury and harmonize tax rates across the 28-nation bloc.

Dropbox pushed mandatory password changes for large...

Well, there’s a pretty good reason Dropbox asked a large segment of its user base to change their passwords last week.

The password change, which focused on users who had signed up period to mid-2012, followed the discovery of a large dump of email addresses and passwords related to these accounts.

The online storage company confirmed late Tuesday reports that 68 million user email addresses and hashed and salted passwords from an incident in 2012 had been compromised.

The company said that the mandatory password reset covered all affected users, thereby leaving the accounts protected.

Hackers stole over 60 million account details from the online storage platform in the previously disclosed breach.

The...

In run-up to iPhone 7 launch, Bowers & Wilkins...

Well-respected British audio company Bowers & Wilkins clearly wants to be ready for the anticipated loss of the headphone socket in the iPhone 7: it has just announced a Bluetooth version of its P7 over-ear headphones.

We’re big fans of the company’s smaller on-ear P5 headphones, which made it into the holiday gift guide selections of both Jeremy and myself after the company launched a wireless version earlier in the year. This launch brings the same wireless freedom to the larger over-ear model …

Apple uses Turi acquisition resources to expand...

There’s a reason Apple buys companies from time to time.

Following its acquisition of machine learning platform Turi earlier this month, Apple is now growing the team that will serve as the company’s new machine learning division focusing on integrating the tech into new and existing products.

Apple confirmed tat the company had acquired Turi earlier in August, stating that it “buys smaller technology companies from time to time,” albeit without providing details.

Apple has apparently started expanding the team acquired by the acquisition and is bringing in new application developers as well as data scientists into Turi’s Seattle location, where the company is based.

The new machine learning division will work alongside Apple’s product teams to...

The M38 mini USB flash drive has promise, but still...

Overall, I like OLALA’s M38, a mini metal USB flash drive for use with the iPhone and iPad. However, I don't love it — and I wanted to love it.

The M38 lets you expand your iDevice’s memory with external storage and comes in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models (I’m using the latter). The OLALA drive plugs into your iPhone or iPad via the Lightning port. The M38’s Lightning plug can be retracted into the device’s body and an USB plug pops out the other side. This makes it easy to transfer data between an iOS gadget and a Mac, Windows or Linux system.

Or at least it should make it easy. My biggest gripe with the M38 is that you have to remove your iPhone or iPad’s case to plug it in, which is extremely inconvenient.

The M38 takes advantage of OLALA’s iDisk Me software, which is a free download the Apple App Store. However, I didn’t find the app — which allows you to transfer, view and share documents, images,...

SEC filings reveal that Apple CEO Tim Cook has sold a little over 600,000 of his AAPL shares over the past couple of weeks, netting him approximately $65M. He continues to hold more than a million shares worth some $110M.

How to teach Maps (and Siri) where your home address...

You can teach Maps on iOS and Mac OS X, and Siri on iOS, to recognize your home address. Here’s how:

  • Open up Maps.
  • Tap on the arrow icon in the lower left side of the screen.
  • When your current location is show, tap on the arrow to the right.
  • On the info page in the lower left, tap Add to Contacts.
  • Choose Existing Contact.
  • Pick your iCloud Contact card.
  • Assign a location tag — for example, “Home.”

Now you can issue Siri commands involving Home and she (Siri is a she, right?) will know the location you mean. You can do the same with your work address and other locations.

Tim Cook responds to tax ruling in Irish press: it...

Earlier in the week, Apple was hit by a European Commission ruling to the tune of 13 billion euros in back taxes to Ireland. Apple immediately refuted any wrongdoing and has already said the Irish government will appeal. Apple CEO Tim Cook has continued this tirade today in the Irish press, with a newspaper column in the Independent and a rare radio interview (with RTE’s Paschal Sheehy).

Cook does not hold back on his language. He says the 0.005% effective tax rate bandied about by the Commission is false and “total political crap”. He...

Imagine squeezing your retina iMac screen down onto an iPhone 5. You can do it. It might look a bit silly and initially you might wonder why you'd bother, but it has long been possible to see and remotely control your Macs and PCs on even your iPhone. Now Google has released Chrome Remote Desktop for iOS and you can do it for free. You'll do it, too: try this once and you will forever keep finding other reasons why it's incredibly useful. It's fantastic when you forget a file, for instance, and can now just find and email it to yourself from afar. And it will save your soul, your sanity and yo...

InvenSense hit with lawsuit over concessions in...

A new lawsuit filed against gyroscope and accelerometer supplier for Apple, InvenSense, accuses the company of failing to tell investors about the concessions it made to secure a recent deal. InvenSense parts are used in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus; executives should have warned investors, the suit alleges, that Apple was given a "sweetheart deal" that would hurt profits. "Instead of revealing the true condition of the company and its prospects, defendants hid those facts from investors and chose to issue strong guidance and paint a picture of a bright future with a new mega-customer," the complai...

While the idea that Apple probably had another record-breaking holiday quarter (what the company calls fiscal 2015 Q1) is unsurprising to all but selected pundits, a spate of reports released on Monday may be painting a general portrait of not just significant improvement, but more importantly growth in key areas of importance both to investors and analysis as well as to the health of the company.
