Apple Daily Report for August 29, 2017

The AWT News Update is on hiatus while my compadre, Steve, is on a road trip. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Following a surge in Apple stock performance, Apple CEO Tim Cook has collected the maximum number of restricted stock units — totaling 560,000 shares — afforded by his incentive plan, raking in nearly...

Apple is now accepting Wechat Pay in China

Apple is now accepting Wechat Pay for payments made in its Apple App Store and iTunes in China after it previously accepted Alibaba’s Alipay as a mobile payment option. This will likely drive up the tech giant’s revenues in the country from in-store and music spending, reports China Money Network.

"We are glad to offer users in mainland China the option of WeChat Pay for their favorite mobile app or Apple Music products. We continue to be dedicated to provide multiple simple and convenient payment methods for customers within the Apple ecosystem," Apple said in a statement.

China Money Network says the Cupertino, California-based company didn’t have a lot of good options. Nearly 20 months after entering the Chinese markets, Apple Pay only has around 1% of the Chinese third-party mobile payment market.

The HomeKit ecosystem continues to expand with new accessories coming out all the time. Existing solutions like Philips Hue require running a bridge hub in additional to buying the special multicolor bulbs.  The Koogeek solution is simpler and easier to recommend as a gift item — just replace your current bulb and you are pretty much good to go.

The Smart Bulb integration with HomeKit enables users to toggle the light on and off, change color and set the brightness level; everything is accessible from the Home app on iOS or with Siri voice commands. The hub-less approach has some tradeoffs, but on the whole it is a great accessory that adds smart home features to a room with very little fuss. Read on below for my full hands on …

2018 iPhone growth variously predicted to be 9.1%,...

While analysts can’t agree on numbers, all the latest predictions are for extremely strong iPhone growth in 2018 – with growth estimates ranging from 9.1% to 23%.

IDC is projecting 9.1% growth for iPhones in 2018, following 1.5% year-on year growth this year.

From there, things only get better for Apple as IDC anticipates the arrival of the iPhone 8 will spur a major upgrade cycle come 2018. Despite the new device launching later this year, IDC expects a majority of the shipments are likely to land early in 2018. IDC projects 9.1% growth in 2018 with the iPhone 8 and the new 7S/7S+ models playing a pivotal part in the near double-digit growth next year.

RoboKiller and the junk call nightmare

Jon Brodkin, Ars Technica:

“I am in the middle of a cell phone nightmare,” France, who lives in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, told Ars in an e-mail after three days worth of the calls. “My phone started ringing three days ago and has continued to ring every few minutes since then. Each time it is from a different number… I can’t conduct a client call, can’t text because calls coming in interrupt the process, can’t even take photos for the same reason.”

On the first night, France went to bed, slept for 7.5 hours, and woke up to 225 missed calls, she said. The calls continued at roughly the same pace for the rest of the five-day stretch, putting the number of calls at somewhere around 700 a day.

The first half of this well written Ars Technica piece delves into spam calling and the futility of trying to block those calls. The second half is about solutions, solutions like RoboKiller:

Instead of merely relying on a blocklist, RoboKiller’s technology...

Apple is expected to demonstrate nominal 1.5% year-over-year growth in 2017. This is a considerable improvement from the 7% decline in iPhone shipments in 2016. From there, things only get better for Apple, as IDC anticipates the arrival of the iPhone 8 will spur a major upgrade cycle come 2018.

Despite the new device launching later this year, IDC expects a majority of the shipments are likely to land early in 2018. IDC projects 9.1% growth in 2018 with the iPhone 8 and the new 7S/7S+ models playing a pivotal part in the near double-digit growth next year.

IDC expects worldwide smartphone shipments to grow from 1.47...

Tim Cook gets political with the New York Times

The interview is chock full of quotes from Tim. Here are a few:

The reality is that government, for a long period of time, has for whatever set of reasons become less functional and isn’t working at the speed that it once was. And so it does fall, I think, not just on business but on all other areas of society to step up.

And:

“One of the things that hits you,” he said, is “all of the major acts, legislation, that happened during just his presidency.” His eyes widened as he listed some: “You have the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Act, you have Medicare, you have Medicaid, you have several national parks, you have Head Start, you have housing discrimination, you have jury discrimination.”

And:

He was vocal, for example, in criticizing Mr. Trump after Charlottesville in a memo to his staff: “I disagree with the president and others who believe that there is a moral equivalence between white supremacists and Nazis, and those who oppose them by...

Apple, move studios purportedly arguing over pricing...

Apple is “scrambling” to strike deals with Hollywood studios to offer ultra-high definition films on its upcoming Apple TV, but discussions have been hampered by disagreements over pricing, reports The Wall Street Journal, quoting unnamed “people with knowledge of the talks.”

The article says that Apple wants to keep 4K films — which offer 4,000 pixels per frame — priced at $19.99, while some of the studios want to charge more, perhaps up to $30. However, at least one studio representative told the WSJ that Netflix subscribers already receive streaming 4K content for $12 per month, so convincing folks to pony up $30 for a UHD flick could be a tough sell.

Apple is expected to debut a new Apple TV along with new iPhones and Apple Watches this month. The next gen set-top box is expected to adds support for UHD and...

WSJ: Apple to hold product launch on Sept 12

Wall Street Journal:

Apple Inc. has scheduled a product-announcement event on Sept. 12, according to people briefed on its plans, reinforcing expectations that the technology giant will release new iPhones and a smartwatch well ahead of the holiday shopping season.

The company is expected to unveil three iPhones, according to other people familiar with its plans. Those include a showcase iPhone to mark the product’s 10th anniversary that is larger and pricier and features an edge-to-edge display and facial-recognition technology, as well as updates to the two iPhone 7 models that started selling last year.

And:

In the past two years it has used San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, but people close to the company say it is aiming to use the 1,000-seat Steve Jobs Theater on its new headquarters campus.

Here we go. Feels like that part of the rollercoaster where you are still being ratcheted to the top of the ride, not quite at the top, but...

Apple wants to sell 4K movies for $20 in iTunes, but...

Apple has not yet finalized deals with movie studios for 4K content, according to a new report by the Wall Street Journal. The clock is ticking as Apple readies a 4K Apple TV unveiling for September 12, and naturally the company wants to announce a sizeable 4K content ecosystem to back it.

It appears the studios are pushing back on pricing. Whereas Apple wants to sell 4K movies for $20, the same price it sells many new release HD movies at, studios are demanding an additional $5-$10 premium per sale.

Apple patent offers an alternative fingerprint...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,747,488) for an “active sensing element for acoustic imaging systems,” which suggests rumors that Touch ID will be replaced in the upcoming “iPhone 8” by an alternative fingerprint ID method may be accurate.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that many electronic devices include security features to prevent unauthorized access. For example, a device can include a biometric sensor configured to establish a user's identity by determining whether obtained biometric data matches known biometric data of an authorized user. A fingerprint imaging system is one example of a biometric sensor.

However, Apple says that sometimes the performance of a biometric sensor may be affected by the precision with which biometric data can be detected. Although increased precision may lead to improved security for the electronic device, it may also result in a physical reduction in the size of one or more components of the sensor. For example, a...

Rumor: Apple pushing to finish construction, hold...

With only a few weeks left, it looks as if Apple’s pulling out all the stops to have its rumored September 12th press and media event take place in the Steve Jobs Theater.

Albeit the past two years of media events have seen Apple’s media events take place in the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, sources close to the company say it is aiming to use the 1,000-seat Steve Jobs Theater on its new headquarters campus. The campus is still in its end stages of construction, which could affect the timing or location of the event.

At the event, Apple is widely expected to unveil the so-called iPhone 8 with an OLED display, wireless charging, and facial recognition, alongside updated versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

It’s also rumored that Apple Watch Series 3 models and a possible 4K-capable Apple TV with HDR support are also expected alongside release dates for iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4, and tvOS 11.

InvenSense hit with lawsuit over concessions in...

A new lawsuit filed against gyroscope and accelerometer supplier for Apple, InvenSense, accuses the company of failing to tell investors about the concessions it made to secure a recent deal. InvenSense parts are used in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus; executives should have warned investors, the suit alleges, that Apple was given a "sweetheart deal" that would hurt profits. "Instead of revealing the true condition of the company and its prospects, defendants hid those facts from investors and chose to issue strong guidance and paint a picture of a bright future with a new mega-customer," the complai...
