Irish cabinet may get more time to decide on Apple’s...

Ireland's cabinet may be given more time to decide on whether to back the finance minister's recommendation that Dublin appeal the European Commission's ruling against its tax dealings with Apple, reports Reuters.

Finance Minister Michael Noonan said on Tuesday he "disagreed profoundly" with the Commission's order that Apple should hand over to Ireland unpaid taxes of up to 13 billion euros ruled to be illegal state aid. He will seek approval for an appeal from the cabinet today.

Yesterday the European Commission ruled that Apple must repay 13 billion euros ($14.5 billion) in back taxes dating back to 2003-2014. The Europe’s anti-trust and consumer investigation agency claimed that Ireland, Luxembourg and the Netherlands have attracted investment and jobs by helping big companies avoid tax in other countries, including EU members.

The commission suspects Ireland was...

Griffin Technology has announced its iTrip Clip, a Bluetooth audio adapter that converts any pair of wired headphones to wireless headphones. This could come in handy if the “iPhone 7” does indeed ditch the traditional audio jack as rumors claim.

“iTrip Clip ensures users can continue using their favorite 3.5mm headphones, with no worries about if their new smartphone eliminated the headphone jack," said Andrew Biddle, Category Manager of Power at Griffin. “Not only can our iTrip Clip make any pair of headphones wireless, it also puts the convenience of a Bluetooth sound system into any car.”

The iTrip Clip connects wirelessly to any smartphone or tablet via Bluetooth 4.1. Connecting any headphones, earbuds or AUX cables to the compact, self-powered adapter lets users listen to music and video, or make calls, without cables. The iTrip Clip sports play, volume, and...

[VIDEO] Variety:

Season 2 will debut in 2017 and will consist of 9 episodes, in comparison to the first season that spanned 8 episodes.

The news comes hardly as a surprise, as the supernatural drama has become arguably the buzziest series of the summer. Insiders tell Variety that work on the second season has already been underway for quite some time.

Really glad to see this.

Rumor: Mirle’s curved glass chassis tech could be...

Mirle Automation, a Taiwanese firm, has developed equipment for making a 3D curved glass chassis, and has entered the supply chain for the 2017 iPhone series, according to a Commercial Times report.

The article says Mirle has obtained orders for the newly-developed equipment from Foxconn Technology and Lens Technology with shipments scheduled to kick off in the fourth quarter of 2016. Foxconn is one of Apple’s manufacturing partners.

Earlier this month the Japanese site, Nikkei (as noted by AppleInsider) claimed that Apple will debut three new iPhone models next year, presumably the “iPhone 8” and “iPhone 8 Plus,” as well as a third model that will sport a curved OLED screen similar to the Edge versions of Samsung's Galaxy phones....

Apple’s little known secret to success

Tim Bajarin, writing for Tech.pinions:

One of the things that most consumers do not know about Apple is their supply chain and manufacturing is one of the best in the world. Tim Cook, when he was in charge of the chain, created one of the most efficient supply and manufacturing systems in the market. Cook managed this side of Apple’s business for over 10 years before he was elevated to the role of CEO. Even today he has an eagle eye on this part of their business and understands the supply chain better than any other CEO in the tech world today.

But what really makes Cook and Apple stand out is that, when they design hardware, they only marginally look at what type of equipment they will use to make this product. Creating a product that is great, easy to use, and extremely well designed is the first priority.

Once that is in place, they get serious about how they can manufacture the product in mass quantities and in the most cost-effective way. However, Apple...

Monster’s lawsuit against Beats has gone very poorly

The Verge:

Monster’s claims that Beats Electronics fraudulently ended their relationship were dismissed in a Los Angeles Superior Court today, leaving Beats and Apple off the hook. The judge ruled that Beats was allowed to end their partnership, meaning its actions were not, as Monster and its CEO Noel Lee claimed, a “sham” designed to take control of their shared headphone line.

The case continues, but not in a way that Monster’s going to be happy about: Beats is now countersuing for attorneys’ fees, claiming its termination agreement with Monster should have prevented this lawsuit — or really any other lawsuit — from being filed in the first place. Apple declined to comment, and Monster attorney Philip Gregory did not return a request for comment.

Using Siri to control 3rd party apps in iOS 10

Nathan Olivarez-Giles, writing for The Wall Street Journal:

You’re going to have a lot more to talk about with Siri this fall. In iOS 10, Apple Inc.’s upcoming iPhone and iPad operating system, you’ll be able to control third-party app functions using the company’s voice-activated assistant for the first time.

Among the first apps to yield to Siri are big names like WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Square Cash and Slack, along with lesser-known ones including Looklive and The Roll.

I’ve tried out Siri’s new abilities in demos with developers over the past few days. After getting an early look at a more capable Siri, it’s clear that this long-overdue feature is important to making Siri more useful in everyday life. Still, controlling third-party apps is merely a first step toward Siri living up to Apple’s promise as a new way to control our devices.

We are at the cusp of a new age, an age that will see Siri play an ever-increasing role in our lives. Adding...

Station 1.0 is a new multilevel Dock for Mac OS X

True North Software has debuted Station 1.0, a multilevel (hierarchical) launcher for Mac OS X. It’s designed to help promote a more natural organization of applications and documents into folders.

With nested folders, you can arrange items in Station in a way that fits your workflow with an uncluttered look and feel. Scalability is increased through logical groupings, which helps increase the number of items that can be added to the app without having to shrink the launcher size.

Related items can be grouped together into a single folder. For example, one folder can contain work related items and another folder gaming items. Station can also launch all the items in a launch fold simultaneously. The utility implements scrollbars when a launch panel exceeds the width or height of the screen.

Station requires Mac OS X 10.10 or higher. It costs $14.99 and is available at the Mac App...

Mossberg: The post-Jobs Apple has soared financially...

Mossberg:

Five years ago last week, the legendary Steve Jobs stepped down as Apple’s CEO after an amazing 14-year run that took the technology company from the edge of disaster to the heights of glory. He personally selected his COO, Tim Cook, as the new CEO, and passed away six weeks later.

So, how has Apple changed in the first five years of the Tim Cook era? How is it different from the peak of the Jobs era?

The short answer is that the company has surged financially to heights Jobs likely never dreamed of. It has also refined its popular product line and retained most of its senior talent.

But Cook’s Apple has yet to produce the kind of new, game-changing product Jobs was famous for launching. Or, if it has, we don’t know it yet.

I think a better title for this article would have been, “Jobs’ metric of success is different than Cook’s metric of success. Both were critical.”

I think Walt Mossberg’s analysis is interesting, worth reading...

The Lightning port replacement for the 3.5 millimeter headphone jack rumor might have just been corroborated along with the “iPhone 7” and “iPhone 7 Plus” name.

Dropbox’s move last week to ask users who had signed up before mid-2012 to change their account passwords followed the discovery of a large dump of email addresses and passwords related to these accounts.

The online storage company confirmed late Tuesday reports that 68 million user email addresses and hashed and salted passwords from an incident in 2012 had been compromised.

Dropbox said that the password reset the company completed last week covered all of the affected users so that the Dropbox accounts are protected.

Last week, the company asked users who signed up before mid-2012 to change their passwords if they haven’t done so since then, describing it as a preventive measure and not because there was any indication that their accounts were improperly accessed.

The malware beast raises its head once again.

Transmission, a popular BitTorrent client, has been discovered to once again be distributing Mac-based malware under version 2.92, months after it was used to spread a strand of ransomware.

Researchers at security firm ESET have been following a malware called OSX/Keydnap, which can steal passwords, and noticed that it was spreading through Transmission’s official site.

Fortunately, Transmission has already removed the download, but users who downloaded the client between this past Sunday and Monday should check for signs that their Mac has been comprised.

Online purchases via Apple Pay and Android Pay to...

New findings from Juniper Research claim that the value of digital and physical goods purchased through mobile “OS-Pay” platforms will increase by fifteen times in the next two years.

A combination of in-app purchases and website retail payments is projected to drive annual spend via Apple Pay and Android Pay to $8 billion in 2018, up from $540 million this year, according to the research group. The new Juniper study found that the integration of OS-Pay into apps will prove to be a “no brainer” for developers looking to reduce buyer friction, where password entry on smartphones remains cumbersome.

Staples, for example, has already reported that over 30% of its iOS app users make in-app purchases through Apple Pay. Meanwhile, despite the continued contraction of the consumer tablet market, more than 85% of remote goods...

Ideally is a good Mac app with even more potential

I always have a soft spot in my reviewer's heart for "one trick ponies." Sometimes all I need from an app is one, single function. And for it to do it very well and simply, so that I can move on with my work.

But now OTPs are crowding the market. Plus, some bigger apps have rolled several (or many) OTPs into their apps (a corral of OTPs?). This can make for a bloated desktop and Menu Bar.

That brings us to Ideally for Mac OS X, which offers a fast way to make notes and keep notes' related files in one place.

The app is easy to use. Hotkeys, swipe gestures, animations, 'Drag&Drop' help you navigate between views that look like a notepad. Everything's right at your fingertips in your menu bar.

Ideally also allows you to zip, email, preview files right inside the app, which is great, as there's no need to bounce between desktop or file system."

The app is designed, for want of a better analogy, to be a notes app with “roid rage.” Ideally has two...

LA schools' iPad program flawed from beginning...

The Los Angeles Unified School District's failed iPad deployment was botched early on, according to a review by the US Education Department. The federal agency says that it first of all put too hard an emphasis on using Apple hardware and software, ignoring cheaper options that could have saved money for the District and taxpayers. In July the USD said it was shifting to a strategy involving Chromebooks and Windows devices, such as the Microsoft Surface....

Hands On: PhotoWatermark (OS X)

It's a different world. You might be the sort who would never take photo from a website and use it in your own book, but today if an image is online, it's as if the world sees it as fair game. Maybe that's a peek into our base immorality and the ultimate cataclysmic self-destruction of humanity, or maybe it's just that cut and paste is easy. Whatever it is, though, it's happening and you cannot stop it – not even with an application like this: but if PhotoWatermark can't prevent the copying of images, it can help photographers and artists considerably by adding identifying text to your image...

Multiple reports point to record-breaking Apple...

While the idea that Apple probably had another record-breaking holiday quarter (what the company calls fiscal 2015 Q1) is unsurprising to all but selected pundits, a spate of reports released on Monday may be painting a general portrait of not just significant improvement, but more importantly growth in key areas of importance both to investors and analysis as well as to the health of the company. Sales of Macs look to be way up, iOS devices are selling much better in a key foreign market, and Apple's suppliers are flourishing -- all signs that point to better-than-expected quarter....

HomeKit requires Apple TV hub for remote Siri...

People wanting to control HomeKit-enabled devices remotely through Apple's Siri must have an Apple TV at home to serve as a hub, according to Verge sources, including two launch partners and a person said to be "close to HomeKit's development." Siri controls will always work while an iPhone or iPad is on the same network as a HomeKit device, but until now it wasn't fully clear how remote operation might work. The Apple TV must also be a third-generation model running at least v7.0 firmware or newer. Notably, remote operation without Siri -- using the vendor app for a HomeKit product directly -...
