Ignore that call from “Apple” about an iCloud breach

Earlier on Monday, my wife let me know that “Apple Support” had called about iCloud security. She was dubious, and rightly so. “Apple” then called five more times (and counting). Suffice it to say, it wasn’t Apple, but fraudsters trying to piggyback on reports that a major breach of iCloud credentials could render hundreds of millions of accounts vulnerable.

Apple says no such breach occurred, and security researchers, like Troy Hunt of HaveIBeenPwned.com, say the group trying to extort Apple likely has reused credentials from other sites’ password leaks. (We recommend turning on two-factor authentication at iCloud regardless.)

Sky Dancer soars at first, although the sensation is...

Free-to-play games often look appealing, but it’s difficult to know at a glance whether the business model is insidious and fun ruining, or reasonable and worth pumping a few bucks into. With Freemium Field Test, we’ll take a recent free-to-play iOS game, put it through its paces, and let you know if it’s really worth your time (and money).

Helplessly falling through the clouds at a rapid pace towards the dirt? Terrifying. Controlled falling, on the other hand? Potentially exhilarating. And that’s the kind of sensation that Sky Dancer taps into, blending a familiar behind-the-back endless runner approach with the less-familiar feeling of dropping large distances to platforms below.

UK Home Secretary: Apps Shouldn't Serve as...

UK Home Secretary Amber Rudd on Sunday called for greater government access to encrypted content on mobile apps. Apps with end-to-end encryption, like Facebook's WhatsApp, should not be allowed to conceal terrorists' communications from law enforcement, Rudd said in a television interview. "There should be no place for terrorists to hide," she said. "We need to make sure that organizations like WhatsApp -- and there are plenty of others like that -- don't provide a secret place for terrorists to communicate with each other."

In Hall’s analysis today, he believes the new iPhone 8 is expected to have a higher price point helping to curb some of the device’s inevitable high demand. Hall believes features like wireless charging, a larger display, and improved camera tech will convince those lagging behind to finally upgrade.

Apple has just released iOS 10.3 to the general public, an update which is likely to be the last major release of iOS 10; at this point in the year, work usually begins in earnest on the next major release of iOS, which will be revealed at WWDC in June. The update is available for everything that runs iOS 10: the iPhone 5 and newer, the fourth-generation iPad and newer, the iPad Mini 2 and newer, both iPad Pros, and the sixth-generation iPod Touch.

The update has been going through the beta process for a couple of months now, and since it’s likely to be iOS 10’s last major update, we’ll spend some extra time with a few of the high-profile features. I’ve also spent a tiny...

Apple is Upgrading Millions of iOS Devices To a New...

Apple today began rolling out iOS 10.3, the latest point update to its mobile operating system. iOS 10.3 brings with it several new features, chief among which is a new file system -- called the Apple File System (APFS). From a report: It's a file system that was originally announced at WWDC last year, and it's designed with the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Mac, and Apple TV in mind. Apple has been using its 31-year-old Hierarchical File System (HFS) for iOS devices so far. It was originally designed for Macs with floppy or hard disks, and not for modern mobile devices with solid state storage. Even its successor, HFS+, still doesn't address the needs of these mobile devices enough. Apple's new APFS is designed to scale across these new types of devices and take advantage of flash or SSD storage. It's also engineered with encryption as a primary feature, and even supports features like snapshots so restoring files on a Mac or even an iOS device might get a lot easier in the future...

Theater Mode has been talked about a lot as Apple released betas of watchOS 3.2 over the past few months. It lets you mute sounds and disable the raise-to-wake feature of the watch, meaning its screen won't light up when it senses your wrist turning to check the time. This takes the Apple Watch's current Silent Mode onestep further, essentially eliminating all...

This dot-release brings with it the ability to track your AirPods from the Find My iPhone app and the switch from the outdated HFS+ system to the new Apple File System. In addition, iOS 10.3 lets you leave reviews in-app and will give developers the chance to reply to your reviews in the App Store.

It’s always important to back up your iOS device before attempting to install any new software, but because iOS 10.3 switches to a new file format, you might run into some unexpected compatibility issues. So, it’s extra important to create a backup this time.

President Trump will unveil a new White House office — the Office of American Innovation — today with “sweeping authority to overhaul the federal bureaucracy and fulfill key campaign promises — such as reforming care for veterans and fighting opioid addiction — by harvesting ideas from the business world and, potentially, privatizing some government functions,” reports the Washington Post. And Apple CEO Tim Cook will be involved.

The office will be reportedly staffed by business execs (both current and past) and is designed to infuse fresh thinking into Washington, according to the Post. The Office of American Innovation will particularly focus on technology and data. Tapped to help in the effort are Cook, Microsoft founder Bill...

Wells Fargo Bank introducing Apple Pay ATM...

Wells Fargo Bank says customers now have card-free access to all of its 13,000 ATMs, coast-to-coast. The company’s One-Time Access Code technology allows customers to authenticate at an ATM using an 8-digit token and their debit or ATM card Personal Identification Number (PIN), instead of a physical card.

Customers first log into the Wells Fargo mobile app, select Card-Free ATM access under Account Services, and request a one-time-use, 8-digit access code. Upon arriving at the ATM, he or she simply enters the code and their debit or ATM card PIN, then proceeds to the main menu to perform their transaction.

In addition to One-Time Access Code, later this year customers will be able to initiate a cardless ATM transaction with the “tap and pay” technology in an NFC-enabled smartphone. When this feature is live, a customer will be able to initiate a transaction by signing into a leading mobile wallet (Apple Pay,...

Hands-on with the Philips Hue Tap: a wireless light...

As I continue to go hands-on with more products in the Philips Hue family, I have to say that the Philips Hue Tap is one that caught me by surprise. This is a device that allows you to control your Philips Hue lights using physical buttons, sort of like a traditional light switch, which to me sounded archaic and like the opposite of progress.

Yet, after trying the Hue Tap, I found it to be a convenient compliment to controlling lights from my iPhone or via Siri. The Philips Hue Tap is wireless, pairs easily, can be mounted anywhere, and is powered, not by batteries, but by your touch. Have a look at our brief hands-on video for more details. more…

Uber suspends driverless car program after crash

Uber Technologies Inc [UBER.UL] suspended its pilot program for driverless cars on Saturday after a vehicle equipped with the nascent technology crashed on an Arizona roadway, the ride-hailing company and local police said.

That doesn’t sound good, but…

The accident occurred when the driver of a second vehicle “failed to yield” to the Uber vehicle while making a turn, said Josie Montenegro, a spokeswoman for the Tempe Police Department.

I’m not sure that any car, driverless or not, could have avoided a crash in this situation.

Apple Park is looking very close to completion this month, with one of the research and development buildings now boasting occupants and solar panel installation completed on some of the structures. We have two drone videos for you today, one from a new source (Igor America) and the other from Matthew Roberts, who has been supplying amazing drone footage of the construction for quite some time:

As you can see, the landscaping work has moved ahead after the torrential rains received in much of California in February and March. Roberts notes in his video that the "spaceship" will feature a visitor's center, complete with an Apple Store and a café. The Apple Park campus will most likely be a popular tourist draw in Silicon Valley.

Apple releases Supplier Responsibility report,...

Apple today released its annual Supplier Responsibility report, publishing insights into how well its manufacturing partners treat workers and the environment. For 2016, the report shows that compliance with the 60-hour maximum work week for employees is up to 98 percent -- the highest level ever.

In the realm of environmental compliance, Apple's suppliers reduced carbon emissions by 150,000 metric tons -- equivalent to taking 31,000 cars off roads for a year -- in 2016 alone and have saved 3.8 billion gallons of fresh water since 2013.

The company performed 705 audits of suppliers in 2016, up from 574 in 2015. The assessments resulted in the removal of three suppliers from the Apple supply chain as they did not meet labor, health and safety, or environmental standards.

∞ Using iOS Maps to avoid tolls, highways

There’s both a useful tip and a lesson here.

The tip: If you use Apple Maps on a regular basis, take a moment to fire up the Settings App and make your way to:

Settings > Maps > Driving & Navigation

Look over the page. Among other settings, here’s where you can tell Apple Maps to avoid Tolls and Highways. You can also enable the Compass on your directions page.

The lesson: Where to hide the settings has long been a decision for app developers and their choice might not always be obvious. For example, Apple Maps has a switch to turn Traffic on an off. That switch is embedded behind the info icon (upper right corner of the Maps main view). But the switches for Tolls are in Settings.

Bottom line, if you did not know to look, the Tolls switch would be difficult to find. If you go to the Settings search box (drag down on the main Setting page) and type Tolls, nothing shows up. So you are left...

Apple is now more interested in augmented reality eyesore than an auto project, according to the Financial Times (subscription required). Any retail launch is thought to be at least a year away, however.

An area targeted at Facebook (Oculus), Microsoft (HoloLens), Magic Leap (MLEAP) and elsewhere, AR eyewear is reportedly receiving every more attention at Apple as the technology is, prospectively, an eventual major hardware evolution beyond the smartphone.

Bloomberg says the Cupertino, California-based company is working on several AR products, including digital spectacles that could connect wirelessly to an iPhone and beam content—movies, maps and more—to the wearer. While the glasses — which I’ve dubbed “...

A new lawsuit filed against gyroscope and accelerometer supplier for Apple, InvenSense, accuses the company of failing to tell investors about the concessions it made to secure a recent deal.
