Five states are considering ‘Right to Repair’ bills...

Lawmakers in five states — Nebraska, Minnesota, New York, Massachusetts, and Kansas — have introduced legislation that would enshrine the “Right to Repair” electronics, which means manufacturers such as Apple will have to sell replacement parts to independent repair shops and consumers and will also have to make their diagnostic and service manuals public, reports MotherBoard.

“Limited authorized channels result in inflated, high repair prices and high overturn of electronic items,” the legislators who introduced the New York bill wrote. “Another concern is the large amount of electronic waste created by the inability to affordably repair broken electronics.”

Apple has never authorized an independent company to repair iPhones, though it has for...

Samsung: no, Apple, you can’t keep that $400 million

Samsung has told the Federal Circuit that Apple was flat wrong in arguing that a recent U.S. Supreme Court finding on design patent awards didn’t disturb its claim on a $400 million award, saying Monday that it took “chutzpah” for the iPhone maker to try to stop Samsung’s new trial, according to Law 360, a site that covers legal news.

In December, the Supreme Court sided with Samsung in its never-ending patent fight with Apple, throwing out an appeals court ruling that said the South Korean company had to pay a $399 million penalty to its American rival for copying key iPhone designs.

The justices in their 8-0 ruling sent the case back to the lower court for further proceedings. The court held that a patent violator doesn’t always have to hand over its entire profits from the sales of products using stolen designs, if the designs covered only certain components and not the whole thing.

This is all part of the...

According to the patent filing, a wearable device is coupled to a band including multiple modular functional band links that are each electrically and mechanically connected to one or more other of the band links and/or the wearable device and include one or more electronic components. Report suggests hopes of Energous-based long-range...

Persistent reports that Apple is working on introducing long-range wireless charging technology in the iPhone 8 may be overly optimistic, suggests a new report.

Long-range charging would free devices from the need to be placed onto a charging mat, allowing them to be charged anywhere from three to twenty feet away from a charger. Bloomberg first reported that Apple was working on this tech almost a year ago, and there have been multiple suggestions since then of a tie-in with Energous, whose WattUp technology raises the prospect of iPhones being charged anywhere within a room.

Two particular reports seemed to add weight to this claim, as a key Apple supplier partnered...

Apple releases macOS Sierra 10.12.3 update

It’s not a huge update, but it might help out a bit.

On Monday, Apple released macOS Sierra 10.12.3, the newest version of its macOS 10.12 operating system.

The update, which weighs in as a 1.05 gigabyte download via the App Store, adds the following fixes and changes:

– Improves automatic graphics switching on MacBook Pro (15-inch, October 2016).

– Resolves graphics issues while encoding Adobe Premiere Pro projects on MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (13- and 15-inch, October 2016).

– Fixes an issue that prevented the searching of scanned PDF documents in Preview.

Apple hasn’t specified too many other changes with the update, so it’s sort of a question of installing it and seeing how it behaves.

If anyone out there’s installed and played with macOS Sierra 10.12.3 and has any feedback to offer, please let us know in the comments.

Geff is a new virtual guitar effects rack for macOS

Nikolas Konstantakopoulos has introduced Geff 1.0, a virtual guitar rack for macOS. It’s a standalone audio effects application to use with your guitar like you would a collection of stompboxes.

Geff is separated to three components, Header or Input component, Middle or Effects, and the Footer or Output component. As their names suggest, the Input component manages the audio input, the Effects create and includes the used effects, and the output manages the audio output. In addition, Geff has the ability to map your MIDI controller to almost any of its parameters.

Geff requires macOS 10.6.6 or later. It costs $19.99 and is available worldwide exclusively through...

Apple Investigating Issue With AirPods Randomly...

According to MacRumors, Apple is investigating multiple reports from iPhone owners of AirPods randomly disconnecting and reconnecting during calls. While the issue doesn't appear to be widespread, it appears to be a big enough problem to attract Apple's attention. One of the main reasons why the AirPods were so late to the market was because Apple needed more time to ensure the earpieces had reliable connectivity. Specifically, they were delayed to ensure both earpieces receive audio at the same time. MacRumors reports: A MacRumors forum thread and a long thread on Apple's Support Communities website have been generated by AirPods users who are regularly experiencing Bluetooth connection dropouts during phone calls, despite the fact that the wireless earphones almost never lose their connection when used to listen to music or anything else. AWT News Update: January 23, 2017

Photo from Instagram user emfedor83

  • This Monday turned out to be rather eventful, with updates to all of Apple's operating systems, word of a mysterious Bluetooth/NFC device going through the FCC certification process, and news about an iPhone 7 Plus that went for a long swim in a very cold river and lived!
  • The watchOS 3.1.3 update might be the first update a lot of Watch owners have successfully installed since watchOS 3 first arrived
  • What could a mysterious Apple device with model number A1846 be? We think we have an idea
  • That iPhone 7 Plus of yours is probably much more waterproof than you think it is, with an unplanned test in a frozen-over Russian river showing just how hardy it is

If Apple is working on in-house wireless charging,...

Apple is reportedly working on long-range charging that allows multiple devices to charge anywhere within range of around 20 feet. One report had the company teaming up with Energous to use its WattUp system for its plans. However, an investor's note from Copperfield Research says this isn’t so, and that Apple plans to use its own in-house-developed wireless charging tech.

The research group notes that Apple has filed more than 16 patent applications covering aspects of inductive charging, which is the magnetic coil based wireless charging used in Samsung phones and Apple Watches (WATT’s technology uses RF waves.) The Apple patent portfolio covers both the design and manufacturing of coils, as well as transmitters and receivers. What’s more, Apple’s engineering focus in its patent filings explicitly incorporates inductive charging into handsets. In December Apple filed...

App localization opens the door to global opportunities, but traditional techniques are failing publishers and users alike. Bound by rapid release cycles, sluggish translation turnarounds, and stubborn app store approval processes, developers have little hope of delivering a consistent user experience across multiple languages.

New language launches and linguistic updates can now be made independent of code releases and as frequently as you see fit. That gives users in every language access to the right content at the right time.

It’s not surprising that Mac sales dropped for Apple in 2016 as they experienced their first year over year sales decline since 2001. What is interesting, however, is that as Mac sales dropped roughly 10% and personal computers overall dropped 5.7% for the year, the top four leaders in the market all saw growth as Apple was pushed to number five.

Foxconn Considers $7 Billion Screen Factory In US,...

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: Foxconn, the Taiwanese contract manufacturing company best known for its partnership with Apple, has said that it is mulling a $7 billion investment in U.S. manufacturing that could create between 30,000 and 50,000 jobs. According to The Wall Street Journal, Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou says the company is talking with the state of Pennsylvania among others about getting the land and electricity subsidies it would need to build a factory. "If U.S. state governments are willing to provide these terms, and we calculate and it is cheaper than shipping from China or Japan, then why wouldn't Sharp build a factory in the U.S.?" said Gou. The factory would build flat-panel screens under the Sharp name -- Foxconn bought Sharp around this time last year for $5.1 billion. Sharp President Tai Jeng-wu hinted in October of 2016 that U.S. manufacturing could be a possibility for Sharp, and he also indicated that Apple could begin using OLED...

Apple Watch, Apple TV also get the update love today

To go along with the fresh iOS 10.2.1 and macOS Sierra 10.12.3 updates today, Apple also rolled out updates for tvOS and watchOS. watchOS 3.1.3 is the first update since 3.1.1 hit the streets back in December -- I could never personally get watchOS 3.1.1 to install on my Watch, so it will be interesting to see if the update I'm doing right now succeeds.

The watchOS update can only be installed through the Watch app on the iPhone, and is found by tapping on General > Software Update. You'll need to have your iPhone nearby throughout the update, and the Watch must be plugged into a charger and have at least 50% battery life remaining.

tvOS 10.1.1 looks like it's a maintenance update with few differences from 10.1, which was released in December. If you don't have your fourth-generation Apple TV set up to do automatic updates, you'll need to go into Settings > System > Software Update to download and install the new tvOS.

In addition to minor updates for iOS, watchOS, and tvOS, Apple has released version 10.12.3 of macOS Sierra to the public today. The update is available through the Mac App Store and will be available later today on Apple's Downloads page; new copies of the Sierra installer downloaded after today should also include the update.

Compared to 10.12.2, today's update is pretty limited in scope. Apple is still making some fixes specific to the new MacBook Pros, particularly to the graphics switching mechanism of the 15-inch model (though we have no...

Let’s start the week with a macOS Sierra update, shall we? On Monday, Apple released macOS Sierra 10.12.3, which includes a number of updates for all Mac users, as well as updates that owners of the new MacBook Pro will need.

While not specifically noted in the release notes, this update should fix the Safari bug that plagued the MacBook Pro during testing by Consumer Reports. During its initial review, Consumer Reports had wildly varying results with battery life, prompting the publication to withhold a recommendation of the laptop. A follow-up with Apple resulted in the discovery of a bug in Safari that affected battery life. Consumer Reports said that Apple implemented the fix...

After several weeks of beta testing, Apple has released iOS 10.2.1 to the public today.
