Apple reveals long-rumored Apple Watch

On Tuesday, Apple finally unveiled the Apple Watch, the company's first dedicated wearable device.

Once rumored for an October reveal, the Watch was only recently linked to today's iPhone announcement event, and while it follows devices from the likes of Samsung, Motorola, and LG, the Watch stands out thanks to its total integration with the iPhone and iOS ecosystem. The Apple Watch comes in two different sizes—one larger and one smaller.

According to CEO Tim Cook, the Apple Watch has been in development for a considerable amount of time and required a reassessment of how users interact with devices. Not content to take the iPhone experience and simply shrink it to wrist-like proportions, the Apple Watch discards traditional gesture controls like pinch-to-zoom, since they are impractical in the tiny form factor. Instead, the primary means of interaction...

The new iPhones are both thinner than any previous model, at 6.9mm and 7.1mm, respectively, and come with up to 128GB capacity....

On Tuesday, Apple CEO Tim Cook unveiled Apple Pay, a new mobile payment platform built into every iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It will launch in October as a free update to iOS 8, and it will be supported by 220,000 merchants that already support contactless payments.

"Our mission is to replace your wallet, starting by focusing on payments," Cook said before showing a brief demonstration video of an iPhone user holding the phone up to a sensor at a payment kiosk. "That's it!" Cook said, and then he showed the video once more for those who may have "blinked and missed it." iOS 8 to launch on September 17

Apple on Tuesday announced that the next version of its mobile operating system will officially launch on September 17th, just ahead of the company's new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets.

Speaking at today’s special event, held at Cupertino’s Flint Center for the Performing Arts, vice president Phil Schiller showcased some of iOS 8’s new tricks, including support for a new landscape mode on the company’s iPhone Plus, as well as a new one-handed mode to help users better interact with the larger screens that will make their appearance on new handsets.

Originally introduced during this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference back in June, iOS 8 offers only incremental changes over its predecessor’s design language, but introduces a slew of new technologies that are destined to have a significant impact on Apple’s mobile ecosystem, such as Handoff,...

Apple announces iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus

CUPERTINO, CA—As expected, Apple has just updated its iPhone lineup with brand-new handsets. While last year's 5C and 5S were both variants of 2012's iPhone 5, the new phones feature a redesigned chassis made to hold their larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens. The new enclosures are thinner, too, with the iPhone 6 measuring 6.9mm and the Plus coming out to 7.1mm—both thinner than the iPhone 5S's 7.6mm.

This is just the second time that Apple has changed the size of the iPhone's screen since the original model was introduced back in 2007, and it's the first time Apple has changed the width of its screens—the 4-inch iPhone 5 design just made the previous 3.5-inch displays taller. The new phones are better-suited to compete against ever-increasing screen sizes from Android phone OEMs like Samsung, HTC, LG, and Motorola. According to Apple slides revealed during the Apple vs...

A Chinese Weibo user -- who over the weekend claimed to have posted photos and videos of a working iPhone 6 -- has now posted benchmarks, indicating that the device will have a 1.38GHz processor with 1GB of RAM. Rival smartphones are typically 32-bit, but often equipped with quad-core chips rated over 2GHz and with at least 2GB of RAM....

Apple's motion for for judgement as a matter of law or a retrial in its second patent infringement case against Samsung was denied on Monday. The iPhone and iPad maker had hoped to find a way to get a ruling more in its favor in the case, but it appears the U.S. Federal Court wasn't swayed by the company's arguments.

The Mac Observer Spin: Apple's series of wins in its ongoing patent infringement fight with Samsung have all been slowly eroding away. Samsung's drag-it-out strategy seems to be paying off because the longer the legal fight continues the less Apple looks like a winner.

Under the Apple Hype Machine, Amazon Drops Fire...

Whatever it is that Apple's going to announce a few hours from now, it seems Amazon has decided it's probably not going to send people rushing to buy its Fire phone. Amazon's cut the price of the phone from $199 to 99 cents. At that price, the Fire phone comes with free Amazon Prime membership, too -- but also a 2-year contract with (exclusive carrier) AT&T. Writes ExtremeTech: Whether that’s going to be enough to stimulate sales is an open question — $450 unlocked is still a tough sell for a device that is overmatched by products like the cheaper Nexus 5, or the recently unveiled $500 second-gen Moto X. In August, adoption data from advertising agency Chitika claimed that total Amazon Fire Phone sales were paltry, representing just 0.015-0.02% of phones in use, or fewer than 30,000 phones. That number will have doubtlessly ticked up slightly since then, and it’s true that Amazon’s partners, like AT&T, have aggressively pushed the phone in online stores.

The most personal device you own

Pavan Rajam, writing about a potential iWatch and its place in your device ecosystem:

The smartphone is easily the most personal device we own today. It is our life in our pockets. It is our connection to the rest of the world. We take them with us and use them where ever we can.

There is simply no guarantee that the person using a smartphone is the person to whom it belongs.

Not the case with your watch, which is a much more personal device.

Apple expanding Siri team, adding new technologies

More evidence of earlier speculation that Apple was developing its own Siri engine to replace the licensed one from Nuance emerged on Monday, as a local newspaper reported that Apple is expanding its Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Siri operations with recent hires from Nuance and VoiceSignal Technologies, a company now owned by Nuance. The team would be staying in the same building, but moving to larger quarters on the upper floors -- enough for 65 workers, reports say....

Apple first unveiled its Health application and associated HealthKit framework during WWDC earlier this year with a quote from Dr. John H. Noseworthy, CEO of the Mayo Clinic, a development partner for the iOS Health platform. Now a new report from the Star Tribune claims that the Mayo Clinic will have a role in revealing the next-generation health capabilities of an upcoming device at tomorrow’s event.

It’s not yet clear whether this will happen during a look at iOS 8...

Disney stores being fitted with upgraded iBeacons,...

Ahead of an expected announcement of an Apple-led mobile payments solution, there have been new reports that prominent retailers such as Disney Stores, McDonald's and Apple's own retail stores have joined the ranks of businesses receiving new, upgraded NFC readers and iBeacon sensors as required. The system, if successful, could offer a future alternative to the planned move to a "chip and PIN" credit- and debit-card system already widely in use in Canada and Europe....

Prelude to Tomorrow’s Big-Ass iPhone Apple Event

The iPhones

Here’s what I expect. Two new iPhones, one 4.7 inches, the other 5.5. Same internal specs on both — same A8 SoC, same cameras, same guts. The only difference will be the screen (and the software implications that result from it). I think my predictions on display resolutions from a few weeks ago are still looking good:

  • 4.7-inch display: 1334 × 750, 326 PPI @2x
  • 5.5-inch display: 2208 × 1242, 461 PPI @3x

(More on that @2x/@3x difference in a moment.)

I think the 5.5-inch model will have a starting price $100 higher, and that the new iPhone lineup will look like this (based on U.S. subsidized prices, with two-year carrier contracts):

  • New 5.5-inch iPhone: $299/399/499
  • New 4.7-inch iPhone: $199/299/399
  • iPhone 5S: $99
  • iPhone 5C: “free”

I suspect now the whole point of the iPhone 5C was to get...

NYT claims U2 denial a ruse, band will appear at...

Despite denials by the band themselves, The New York Times on Monday reported that the rock group will play "a significant part" in the Tuesday media event for Apple, possibly performing songs from the group's latest album and announcing some form of tie-up on one of the new devices. A previous report that the next U2 album would come pre-loaded on the next iPhone continues to be unlikely, as Apple has a long history of avoiding promotionally-motivated "bloatware."...

ABC teases exclusive post-event interview, calls...

Apple plans on making a "groundbreaking" announcement tomorrow, alongside its introduction of new iPhones and a possible "iWatch," according to ABC News. The network plans to run a post-announcement special segment at 6:30PM in most time zones hosted by its lead anchor David Muir -- who has apparently been given special insider access to the event and what Apple has planned. The teaser trailer infers that Muir will be interviewing Apple executives, possibly including CEO Tim Cook....

The hidden structure of the Apple keynote

Quartz:

One of Apple’s most successful products—which rarely gets recognized as such—is made not of aluminum and glass, but of words and pictures. The Apple keynote is the tool the company uses a few times a year to unveil its other products to millions of people.

To understand their hidden structure, Quartz reviewed more than a dozen Apple keynotes, logging and analyzing key elements. Here’s what we found.

Those of us who have attended these events in person have often remarked on the similarities in structure and tone from one to the next.

ABC News has posted a new video (seen above) teasing an exclusive look at Apple’s “historic” iPhone 6 announcement tomorrow. The special will air on ABC at 6:30 PM and will be hosted by David Muir, who the network says is the only network television anchor with an invitation to the press event.

We’re not quite sure how “exclusive” the details in the special will be, however, given that by 6:30 PM even the smallest details of the event and perhaps even any unannounced new items to appear on Apple’s website will have been thouroughly documented already. However, it’s quite possible that Muir will sit down with an executive such as CEO Tim Cook to discuss the event and the impact it will have on Apple’s future. Muir has...

Couples Can't Keep Their Hands Off Each Other...

Worried about the NSA spying on your smartphone? How about online hackers? Truth be told, the greatest threat to your confidential information is a lot closer to you -- namely, your partner. That's what a recent survey of more than 13,000 people in the United States revealed. Avast last week reported its findings. Among them: The majority of women snoop on their men's phones just because they're curious, but a third of married women peek at their hubby's mobile to see if he's faithful. Paranoia? Maybe not.

Star Walk 2 review: iPad app makes the night sky...

Macworld:

When Star Walk launched it was one of those “only on the iPad” kind of apps. Since then many have used it as their digital window to space.

Vito Technologies, which built the original, is back with Star Walk 2. While it may not seem like there is much to improve on, the developers have taken the time to find enough enhancements and new features to justify an entirely new app.

Not only has Star Walk been my go to astronomy app, it was the app I always used to “show off” how cool the iPad was. I’ll be buying this version, too.
