Florida man sues Apple for $10 billion for '...

A Florida man has accused Apple of infringing a 1992 patent on an “electronic reading device” that, in our view, looks nothing like the iPhone. He’s asking for $10 billion in damages. No, this isn’t an article from The Onion. It’s real life.

Thomas Ross included drawings of his device, a boxy rectangle with a screen and physical keyboard, in his court filing in Florida Southern District Court, which was obtained by The Telegraph. As you may recall, the original iPhone was the first smartphone without a physical keyboard. No matter, Ross says he was the first person “to have created a novel combination of media and communication tools.”

Rumor: Next-gen iPhone home button to incorporate...

Apple may be looking to introduce Force Touch features to the home button on the next-gen iPhone.

Citing a report released by analysts at Cowen and Company, a number of supply chain “field checks” have indicated that Apple may do away with a physical home button, instead adopting a home button that sits flush with the phone.

Apple’s Force Touch technology will reportedly be built into the home button to provide haptic feedback when pressed, much like the Force Touch trackpad on Apple’s most recent MacBooks. With haptic feedback, iPhone users would still feel the sensation of pressing on the home button even without a button to actually depress.

Although Cowen and Company has a mixed track record, it’s worth noting that this corroborates other rumors about...

Wi-Fi Alliance announces expanded 802.11ac standard

The Wi-Fi Alliance has announced the expansion of the 802.11ac standard to include new features that provide a higher-performance connectivity experience. Most Apple products offer 802.11ac compatibility, including Macs, the AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule. The expanded 802.11ac could see implementation in future versions of the latter two devices, which are overdue for an upgrade.

New features in the expanded 802.11ac standard include:

  • MU-MIMO: Networks with MU-MIMO are capable of multitasking by sending data to multiple devices at once rather than one-at-a-time, improving overall network efficiency and throughput
  • 160MHz channels: Wi-Fi Certified ac increases the maximum channel bandwidth from 80 MHz channels to 160MHz channels, potentially doubling transmission speeds
  • Four spatial streams: Device...

Exploring Apple Watch faces on your iPhone

[VIDEO] Juli Clover, writing for Mac Rumors:

In iOS 10, there’s a new Face Gallery in the Watch app, which is designed to let users customize their Apple Watch faces in watchOS 3 right from their iPhones. Tweaking an Apple Watch face from an awkward angle on a wrist and on a tiny screen can be a hassle, making the Face Gallery a welcome addition to the Watch app.

This is a great idea. Watch the video embedded in the main post to get a sense of how this works.

How to become a Maestro of your Mac keyboard

The good ol’ OS X Dictionary defines maestro as, “a great performer, especially a musician.” While Keyboard Maestro isn’t a musician, it’s definitely a great performer when it comes to saving time and effort. In fact, I’d be hard-pressed to name another app that saves me as much time or as many keystrokes every day as Keyboard Maestro.

The Swiss Army Knife-on-steroids thing is overdone, so I’m gonna call Keyboard Maestro the Leatherman Multi-tool on crack of Mac utilities. Simply put, Keyboard Maestro makes macros. But to call it a mere macro-maker does it a supreme disservice. Yes, it’s a macro-maker, but it’s much more than that.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t pause at this point and explain what I mean by, “macro.” As far as I’m concerned, a macro is any sequence of actions on your Mac that can be saved, and then invoked and...
