Target is bringing mobile payments in-store but not...

You’ll soon be able to use your iPhone to pay at Target stores, but not in the form of Apple Pay.

Target is developing its own in-store mobile payments system this year, the company’s Chief Information and Digital Officer Michael McNamara told Recode. Target confirmed that its iOS apps will soon include the capability to pay with smartphones, but it won’t be adopting Apple Pay for in-store checkout.

The retailer has a flagship app (iTunes link) for online shopping, as well as a Cartwheel app (iTunes link) that lets customers utilize digital coupons during checkout. Target declined to confirm which app, or if both, would be integrating its own mobile pay system. Initially, Target’s own system will be available only to...

Apple Is Releasing a Find My AirPods Feature

For those of you worried about losing an AirPod or two, you may soon be able to find some peace of mind. According to The Wall Street Journal, Apple is adding AirPods support to the Find My iPhone app with the release of iOS 10.3, which will be released in the coming weeks. The Verge reports: Inside the app, AirPods owners will be able to see either the current or last known location of their headphones (although it seems like Apple will determine that based on where the case was last seen, not the actual earbuds). That location data is going to be pretty broad, so it'll really only be good for confirming whether your AirPods are at home or got left behind at work or a coffee shop -- it's not granular enough to say where within your home they might be. To help out with the trickier issue of locating missing headphones that have been separated from their case, Apple is able to blast sound out of each earbud (so long as it has some remaining power). That's by no means an assurance...

A common concern with the Touch Bar on Apple’s new MacBook Pro is that it may just be gimmicky and not actually useful. Function keys and keyboard shortcuts may make you efficient, but Touch Bar customization can put elements like on-screen Safari controls right on your keyboard.

Apple will allow developers to respond to App Store...

The user reviews in the iOS and Mac App Stores can be a mixed bag. Sometimes, a user provides useful information to help you make a purchasing decision. But often the user reviews are filled with complaints about problems that were encountered while using the software. When a software developer addresses those problems in updated software, the user review lingers.

In a future update to iOS 10 and macOS Sierra, developers will have a chance to address user reviews in the App Store. The release notes for iOS 10.3 state that developers will be able to respond to a user review, and the response will be available for others to see. The notes also say that this feature will be available in the Mac App Store.

Apple Will Finally Let Developers Respond To App...

An anonymous reader shares a TechCrunch report: Apple is finally going to give its developers a way to respond to customer reviews on its App Store and Mac App Store -- a feature that's long been available to Android developers on Google Play, much to the chagrin of the Apple developer community. According to developer documentation for the iOS 10.3 beta, when this version of Apple's mobile operating ships, developers will also be able to ask for reviews in new ways, in addition to responding to those posted publicly on the App Store. Apple's ratings and reviews system has felt antiquated, and has been a source of frustration for developers and users alike. When a customer leaves a negative review, developers couldn't respond to the criticism -- which is sometimes unwarranted -- in a way that other App Store customers could see. For example, a customer may be misunderstanding a feature, or may have complained about a bug that's been fixed in a later release.

APFS is coming soon: iOS 10.3 will automatically...

After many years and at least one false start, Apple announced at WWDC last year that it would begin shipping a new, modern file system in 2017. Dubbed APFS (for Apple File System), it is designed to improve support for solid-state storage and encryption and to safeguard data integrity. When released, it will finally replace the nearly two-decade-old HFS+ filesystem that Apple has been tacking new features onto since 1998.

An early version of APFS was included in macOS Sierra as a beta for developers to experiment with, but it was intentionally limited in some important ways; it couldn't be used as a boot drive, it didn't support Fusion...

In December 2016 Nokia announced that it had today filed a number of complaints against Apple in Germany and the U.S, alleging that Apple products infringe a number of its patents.

Apple makes it easy to find lost AirPods in iOS 10.3

Losing an AirPod is a legitimate possibility, and possibly the biggest worry that people have about using Apple’s new Bluetooth wireless earphones. Apple is no longer pretending this isn’t a real concern with a brand-new Find My AirPods feature in the Find My iPhone app.

How it works: Bluetooth. According to Mashable, your lost AirPod doesn’t have to be close by for you to find it, but it does have to be in Bluetooth range of another one of your Apple devices connected to your iCloud account. If you know the general area your missing AirPods is in—say, your living room—but have no idea what crevice it’s trapped in, you...

On the Likelihood of Losing Your AirPods

Geoffrey Fowler on Twitter, linking to Joanna Stern’s piece on the new “Find My AirPods” feature in the first iOS 10.3 beta:

This was a no-brainer: Apple’s now got a tool to help locate their
tiny $160 wireless earbuds you’re destined to lose.

I’ve seen this “destined to lose” argument in a lot of reviews of the AirPods. Like: “Pros: Good sound, great battery life, easy pairing. Cons: Expensive, easily lost.

And because they’re small, they certainly could be easily lost. But that’s true of all small things. You can easily lose a $100 casino chip. You can easily lose expensive jewelry. It happens. But it’s not that common, because you know these things are valuable. It’s human nature to be more careful with valuable items. If AirPods cost $29...

Apple is working on an enhanced version of Siri in time for the launch of the iPhone 8, indicate supply-chain sources cited by Digitimes. The sources suggest that Apple will respond to increased competition in the field of intelligent assistants – in particular, Google Assistant and the expansion of Amazon’s Alexa to smartphones.

Samsung: no, Apple, you can’t keep that $400 million

Samsung has told the Federal Circuit that Apple was flat wrong in arguing that a recent U.S. Supreme Court finding on design patent awards didn’t disturb its claim on a $400 million award, saying Monday that it took “chutzpah” for the iPhone maker to try to stop Samsung’s new trial, according to Law 360, a site that covers legal news.

In December, the Supreme Court sided with Samsung in its never-ending patent fight with Apple, throwing out an appeals court ruling that said the South Korean company had to pay a $399 million penalty to its American rival for copying key iPhone designs.

The justices in their 8-0 ruling sent the case back to the lower court for further proceedings. The court held that a patent violator doesn’t always have to hand over its entire profits from the sales of products using stolen designs, if the designs covered only certain components and not the whole thing.

This is all part of the...

Apple looks into multi-purpose Apple Watch bands, an...

Future Apple Watch bands may do more than do good while keeping the smartwatch on your arm. Apple has filed for a patent (number 9,553,625) for a “modular functional band links for wearable devices.” The modular links could include multiple batteries, a small display, thermometer, a compass, a touch sensor, speakers, and more.

In other words, Apple is considering “link” bands that could extend the battery life of your Apple Watch, serve photovoltaic cells, electricity generators, cameras, haptic output devices, improve sound output, measure your blood pressure, take your temperature, and a lot more..

According to the patent filing, a wearable device is coupled to a band including multiple modular functional band links that are each electrically and mechanically connected to one or more other of the band links and/or the wearable device and include one or more electronic components. The wearable device may receive identifiers from each of the band...

Report suggests hopes of Energous-based long-range...

Persistent reports that Apple is working on introducing long-range wireless charging technology in the iPhone 8 may be overly optimistic, suggests a new report.

Long-range charging would free devices from the need to be placed onto a charging mat, allowing them to be charged anywhere from three to twenty feet away from a charger. Bloomberg first reported that Apple was working on this tech almost a year ago, and there have been multiple suggestions since then of a tie-in with Energous, whose WattUp technology raises the prospect of iPhones being charged anywhere within a room.

Two particular reports seemed to add weight to this claim, as a key Apple supplier partnered...

Apple releases macOS Sierra 10.12.3 update

It’s not a huge update, but it might help out a bit.

On Monday, Apple released macOS Sierra 10.12.3, the newest version of its macOS 10.12 operating system.

The update, which weighs in as a 1.05 gigabyte download via the App Store, adds the following fixes and changes:

– Improves automatic graphics switching on MacBook Pro (15-inch, October 2016).

– Resolves graphics issues while encoding Adobe Premiere Pro projects on MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (13- and 15-inch, October 2016).

– Fixes an issue that prevented the searching of scanned PDF documents in Preview.

Apple hasn’t specified too many other changes with the update, so it’s sort of a question of installing it and seeing how it behaves.

If anyone out there’s installed and played with macOS Sierra 10.12.3 and has any feedback to offer, please let us know in the comments.

Geff is a new virtual guitar effects rack for macOS

Nikolas Konstantakopoulos has introduced Geff 1.0, a virtual guitar rack for macOS. It’s a standalone audio effects application to use with your guitar like you would a collection of stompboxes.

Geff includes a variety of effects. You can add as many effects and re-arrange them as you like. It offers handling for adding and rearranging effects, using MIDI learning to map almost any parameter of its effects to your MIDI controller.

Geff is separated to three components, Header or Input component, Middle or Effects, and the Footer or Output component. As their names suggest, the Input component manages the audio input, the Effects create and includes the used effects, and the output manages the audio output. In addition, Geff has the ability to map your MIDI controller to almost any of its parameters.

Geff requires macOS 10.6.6 or later. It costs $19.99 and is available worldwide exclusively through...

How to set a default view in the macOS Sierra Finder

The Finder in macOS Sierra offers four ways to view items in a window: as a list, in columns, or in Cover Flow view. To choose a view, use the View buttons at the top of the Finder window.

In the icon view, each file or folder is represented by an icon (such as the Mac desktop). List view shows details about a file or folder, including its attributes.

Column view provides a visual trail of where you’ve been, and displays a hierarchical view of where a file is stored. Cover Flow is a modified list view that displays a thumbnail view of a file’s contents.

GoPower Plus is a convenient iOS device charger (...

Kanex’s GoPower Plus is a $49.95 portable power solution with a built-in micro USB with a Lightning adapter for use with both Apple and Android devices. I’ve never used it with an Android device (cause I don’t own one), but it does come in handy for use with my iPhone 7 Plus when I’m visiting my relatives for the weekend.

Juiced with 8,000 mAh of power, the GoPower Plus can deliver two full charges to your smartphone. An extra USB port and 2A of charging lets you power up an additional device while you’re juicing your iPhone.

The GoPower Plus enables pass-through charging while connected to a power source. Your device charges first, then GoPower Plus recharges itself.

The GoPower Plus — which is Apple MFi Certified, which means it’s specifically made to fit with your Apple devices — features a classy aluminum finish.  An LED indicator displays battery levels and charge status.

The GoPower Plus is smaller...
