Autodesk brings iOS photo editor Pixlr to Mac

After years of good reviews as a series of iOS apps, Autodesk has now brought its image-editing app Pixlr to the Mac. While it bears great resemblance to the myriad other filter-and-effect photo editors from the iOS world, the app does offer some features rarely seen in competitors, such as a "double exposure" collaging feature. As with the company's Sketchbook, Autodesk offers several "tiers" of use, the most "pro" level of which is available on an annual or monthly paid subscription....

Bluetooth speakers aren't only for listening to some music at the park or on a long bus ride, but can also be built with tablets in mind. While some manufacturers craft speakers with a shape that is specifically molded to hold a tablet and offer little use otherwise, others have caught on to a better design. ......

Security guards protest low wages, block Apple San...

A group of corporate and retail security guards for Apple stores staged a peaceful protest of what they consider to be low pay relative to other employees at the company's flagship San Francisco store on Thursday. The issue the guards were drawing attention to is not one specific to Apple, but endemic among tech firms in Silicon Valley -- who collectively tend to pay cleaning, support, maintenance and security staff lower wages on average than regular employees....

Apple updates iOS 8 terms, disallows developers from...

Apple has updated its iOS 8 terms of use, according to The Guardian, to note that developers are not allowed to resell any information gained through the upcoming HealthKit framework. The HealthKit software was announced as part of a larger event earlier this year, but it was only with the most recent beta that Apple made note of this restriction.

The move is not unexpected, as it would be very much against Apple’s modus operandi to allow developers access to such crucial data without some restrictions on its use in place as a protection for users. Similar restrictions exist for the Touch ID API, which doesn’t allow developers to access user fingerprint data at all,...

Apple: HealthKit Data Off Limits to Advertisers

Apple's HealthKit will be off limits for advertisers, which means app developers planning on supporting the health and fitness logging platform won't be able to make money by selling information about how far we walk or how much we weigh to other companies. The rule should help keep personal information that should stay private out of the wrong hands, and could help boost trust in HealthKit once iOS 8 ships in the coming weeks.

The Mac Observer Spin: Locking down our health and fitness data so it can't be sold to advertisers is a great move on Apple's part. That'll go a long way towards helping iPhone owners feel like data that's very personal in nature won't be used to target them with inappropriate or embarrassing ads.

The loneliest whale in the world

Slate:

The whale that Joe George and Velma Ronquille heard was an anomaly: His sound patterns were recognizable as those of a blue whale, but his frequency was unheard-of. It was absolutely unprecedented. So they paid attention. They kept tracking him for years, every migration season, as he made his way south from Alaska to Mexico. His path wasn’t unusual, only his song—and the fact that they never detected any other whales around him. He always seemed to be alone.

So this whale was calling out high, and he was calling out to no one—or at least, no one seemed to be answering.

What a sad and remarkable story.

Judge Lucy Koh Rejects Apple's Quest For Anti-...

The Associated Press, in a story carried by The Financial Express, reports that Federal Judge Lucy Koh has has rejected Apple's attempt to block the sale of several older Samsung smartphones that copied features in the iPhone. Wednesday's rebuff comes nearly four months after a jury awarded Apple Inc. $119 million in damages for Samsung's infringements on technology used in the trend-setting iPhone. The amount was well below the $2.2 billion in damages that Apple had been seeking in the latest round of legal wrangling between the world's two leading smartphone makers since the tussle began four years ago. The Register also carries the story, and notes Perhaps because the ongoing battle was turning the two companies into law firms rather than tech titans, the two agreed to abandon all patent lawsuits outside the USA earlier this month. However, Apple still wanted the infringing features extirpated from American stores, and was seeking to have phones nobody bought banned as ammo for...

Today, Sprint announced a new international WiFi calling option that lets its customers place calls to the US from over 100 countries at no additional charge. The new feature is now available to Samsung Galaxy S4 owners via an over-the-air software update, however Sprint says that support will come to other devices (we’re assuming the iPhone) throughout the year.

In addition to calls over home and public WiFi networks while abroad, this service ships with a messaging option, which makes it easier to make contact with people back home who might not be available for a voice call right away. Not a bad option for people who often find themselves abroad, but support for just one device (an older one at that) is somewhat frustrating. Hopefully Sprint will bring this option to iOS devices soon, especially since T-Mobile has...

The rumors were true: Apple has just sent out invitations for an event on September 9 at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in the company's hometown of Cupertino, California. Apple's invitations often include subtle hints or wink-and-a-nod references to whatever it is the company plans to announce—analyzing (and over-analyzing) these "clues" has become something of a joke among Apple writers—but this invitation is almost entirely unadorned. "Wish we could say more," it reads, as if to tease those who would hope to unlock its secrets.

Report Claims this is the Year of the NFC iPhone

Reports that Apple will include Near Field Communication, or NFC, in the next iPhone have routinely preceded device updates, and so far have proven to be wrong. Now there's word that this time Apple really, really, will include NFC in the iPhone 6, which is expected to be introduced on September 9.

The Mac Observer Spin: Just because we continue to hear that this is the year Apple will add NFC to the iPhone doesn't mean it will happen. People thought Apple would give in and add Blu-ray drives to the Mac lineup for years, and that didn't happen, either.

Apple wins patent on Fifth Avenue store's...

The US Patent and Trademark Office has granted an Apple design patent on the most recent incarnation of the glass cube sitting over the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York City. The original cube -- paid for and partly designed by Apple co-founder Steve Jobs -- used 90 panes of glass. In 2011, however, Apple spent some $6.7 million on installing a simpler, more visually appealing version of the cube with 15 panes....

News: Report: iPhone 6 to feature NFC mobile payments

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6 will come with its own mobile payment system, and the solution will use NFC, Wired reports. Use of near field communication has been rumored in the iPhone for years — speculation began around the time of the iPhone 4 in 2010, and every iPhone since has been accompanied by an NFC report that never came true. Talk about the use of NFC in the iPhone has heated up again in recent weeks, though considering the device’s…

Analyst & GTAT investor claims all 5.5-inch...

An investment note we’ve seen from analyst and GTAT investor Matt Margolis claims that all 5.5-inch models of the iPhone 6 will come with sapphire screens, while the 4.7-inch model will get either sapphire or Gorilla Glass depending on the specification.

According to sources close to Foxconn’s manufacturing operations the iPhone 6 will come built with sapphire cover screens in both sizes. These sources have also indicated that the 4.7” Phone 6 is being assembled in two varieties, a sapphire cover screen version and a version featuring Gorilla Glass. At this point I do not know the approximate mix between the two cover screen options on the 4.7” iPhone 6. My latest check on the 5.5” iPhone 6 indicates that all units of the device are expected to come protected by a sapphire cover screen at this point …

Apple Denied Samsung Sales Injunction Yet Again

US Federal Judge Lucy Koh shot down a request from Apple to grant a permanent injunction blocking the sale of some Android-based Samsung mobile devices over pantent infringement claims. The motion was part of Apple's second patent infringement case with Samsung, and Judge Koh said the iPhone and iPad maker didn't show that its reputation or ability to innovate had been damaged.

The Mac Observer Spin: Apple's injunction request covered older Samsung products, so denying the injunction request won't have a big impact on device sales for either company. Still, winning the injunction would've been a handy tool to tuck away in Apple's legal strategy handbag.
