Don't Let the Next Catastrophic Phishing...

What I think is amazing about all of the massive data breaches we hear about is that we know most are not reported. In other words, for every email, customer record, or financial theft in the news, there likely are hundreds that remain in the shadows. This problem is huge and yet another incident came to light last week. A clever Lithuanian individual was able to pull a whopping $100 million from a bunch of unnamed Internet companies using a combination of phishing tactics and fake vendors spread across a multitude of companies.

Apple's 2016 supplier sustainability report...

Apple takes environmental sustainability seriously, but producing electronic devices that don’t cause harm to the earth or the people who make those devices requires the efforts of Apple’s suppliers, too. That’s why the company enforces standards for its partners, and according to Apple’s 11th annual supplier sustainability progress report, 2016 saw dramatic improvements.

Apple audited 705 suppliers and found 98 percent compliance with a 60-hour maximum work week, a new high. Apple removes partners from its supply chain who don’t meet its standards for labor and human rights, and in 2016 the company ceased working with three suppliers, BuzzFeed reported.

Apple has released iOS 10.3, macOS Sierra 10.12.4, watch OS 3.2 and tvOS 10.2 after weeks of public and developer beta testing.  iOS 10.3 updates the file structure on an iOS device to the Apple File System (APFS).

AFPS is optimized for Flash/SSD storage and features “strong encryption, copy-on-write metadata, space sharing, cloning for files and directories, snapshots, fast directory sizing, atomic safe-save primitives, and improved file system fundamentals.”

The upgrade also includes a new "Find My AirPods" ability, additions to Siri, CarPlay improvements, and some changes to Maps. Also, developers will be able to respond to customer reviews on the Apple App Store.

The iOS 10.3 update can be performed "over the air" through the software update feature on compatible iOS devices. Or you can download it via iTunes, then install it on a connected device.

macOS 10.12.4 brings iOS's Night Shift mode to the Mac, allowing...

The new revision of macOS Sierra has just been released by Apple. macOS Sierra 10.12.4 is now available for Mac users, but before you install it, here’s the lowdown on the new features. It’s not a major update, so there’s no need to rush to install it. When you do decide to do so, be sure you back up your Mac’s data first.

Night Shift

The major new feature in macOS Sierra 10.12.4 is Night Shift, which made its debut in iOS 9.3. Night Shift is available on the following Macs:

  • MacBook Air (Mid 2012 or later)
  • MacBook (Early 2015 or later)
  • MacBook Pro (Mid 2012 or later)
  • Mac mini (Late 2012 or later)
  • iMac (Late 2012 or later)
  • Mac Pro (Late 2013)

Developers and beta testers have already had a field day with iOS 10.3, and today it’s your turn to try the new software update.

After seven beta releases, iOS 10.3 is finally here. This dot-release brings with it the ability to track your AirPods from the Find My iPhone app and the switch from the outdated HFS+ system to the new Apple File System. In addition, iOS 10.3 lets you leave reviews in-app and will give developers the chance to reply to your reviews in the App Store.

It’s always important to back up your iOS device before attempting to install any new software, but because iOS 10.3 switches to a new file format, you might run into some unexpected compatibility issues. So, it’s extra important to create a backup this time.

Wells Fargo Bank introducing Apple Pay ATM...

Wells Fargo Bank says customers now have card-free access to all of its 13,000 ATMs, coast-to-coast. The company’s One-Time Access Code technology allows customers to authenticate at an ATM using an 8-digit token and their debit or ATM card Personal Identification Number (PIN), instead of a physical card.

Customers first log into the Wells Fargo mobile app, select Card-Free ATM access under Account Services, and request a one-time-use, 8-digit access code. Upon arriving at the ATM, he or she simply enters the code and their debit or ATM card PIN, then proceeds to the main menu to perform their transaction.

In addition to One-Time Access Code, later this year customers will be able to initiate a cardless ATM transaction with the “tap and pay” technology in an NFC-enabled smartphone. When this feature is live, a customer will be able to initiate a transaction by signing into a leading mobile wallet (Apple Pay,...

Hands-on with the Philips Hue Tap: a wireless light...

As I continue to go hands-on with more products in the Philips Hue family, I have to say that the Philips Hue Tap is one that caught me by surprise. This is a device that allows you to control your Philips Hue lights using physical buttons, sort of like a traditional light switch, which to me sounded archaic and like the opposite of progress.

Yet, after trying the Hue Tap, I found it to be a convenient compliment to controlling lights from my iPhone or via Siri. The Philips Hue Tap is wireless, pairs easily, can be mounted anywhere, and is powered, not by batteries, but by your touch. Have a look at our brief hands-on video for more details. more…

Apple today released its annual Supplier Responsibility report, publishing insights into how well its manufacturing partners treat workers and the environment. For 2016, the report shows that compliance with the 60-hour maximum work week for employees is up to 98 percent -- the highest level ever.

In the realm of environmental compliance, Apple's suppliers reduced carbon emissions by 150,000 metric tons -- equivalent to taking 31,000 cars off roads for a year -- in 2016 alone and have saved 3.8 billion gallons of fresh water since 2013.

The company performed 705 audits of suppliers in 2016, up from 574 in 2015. The assessments resulted in the removal of three suppliers from the Apple supply chain as they did not meet labor, health and safety, or environmental standards.

∞ Using iOS Maps to avoid tolls, highways

There’s both a useful tip and a lesson here.

The tip: If you use Apple Maps on a regular basis, take a moment to fire up the Settings App and make your way to:

Settings > Maps > Driving & Navigation

Look over the page. Among other settings, here’s where you can tell Apple Maps to avoid Tolls and Highways. You can also enable the Compass on your directions page.

The lesson: Where to hide the settings has long been a decision for app developers and their choice might not always be obvious. For example, Apple Maps has a switch to turn Traffic on an off. That switch is embedded behind the info icon (upper right corner of the Maps main view). But the switches for Tolls are in Settings.

Bottom line, if you did not know to look, the Tolls switch would be difficult to find. If you go to the Settings search box (drag down on the main Setting page) and type Tolls, nothing shows up. So you are left...

Apple considers Apple Watch bands with added...

Apple has filed for a patent (number 20170084133) for “indicators for wearable electronic devices” that show the company is at least considering future bands for the Apple Watch that do more than attach the wearable device to your wrist.

Such a watch could provide band medical reminders, medical notifications, health information, health recommendations, activity information, biometric information, physiological information, and more. It could also convey info about the progress or status of an activity monitored by or performed by the Apple Watch such as: a percentage completion of a local or remote file download; a remaining local or remote playback time of a media file; a remaining distance to a destination; a remaining capacity of a local or remote battery; a number or percent of unread, unwatched, or unheard messages; and so on.

According to the patent filing, an Apple Watch band has an indicator with a variably and/or progressively illuminable portion. The...

iPad bomb plot reportedly one factor in laptop...

The decision taken by the US and UK governments to ban laptops and tablets from hand baggage on some flights was in part prompted by a plot to use a fake iPad as a bomb, reports the Guardian.

The ban – affecting flights to and from a number of predominantly Middle Eastern and North African countries – came into effect over the weekend. The US Department of Homeland Security had previously said it was the result of terrorists seeking ‘innovative methods’ to attack planes, and it has now been revealed that the iPad plot was one of these …

How to add several songs to a playlist in iTunes on...

Adding individual songs to a playlist in iTunes on macOS Sierra is a pain. Thankfully, you can add several songs at once. Here’s how:

  • Open iTunes and select Songs view under the Library tab.
  • Pick your first song.
  • Hold down Shift while highlighting the last song you want to add to select a bunch of songs in a row. Hold down Command to select individual songs that aren’t in a row.
  • Control-Click on one of the highlighted songs.
  • Choose Add To Playlist, followed by the playlist you want — or select New Playlist if you're creating a, well, new playlist.

Your tunes are now added to the playlist you chose.

UK government says Apple ‘cannot get away with’...

British Home Secretary Amber Rudd – in charge of police policy in the UK – has told the BBC that Apple ‘cannot get away with’ apps that offer unbreakable encryption following last week’s terrorist attack in London.

Rudd was speaking after it was revealed that Khalid Masood accessed WhatsApp two minutes before ploughing through pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in a rented car, killing three of them, before fatally stabbing a police officer guarding the Houses of Parliament.

She described end-to-end encrypted messaging as used by WhatsApp and Apple’s Messages app as ‘completely unacceptable’ …

By Aaron Lee

The DJYRO, combined with an app available through the Apple App Store is a $29.99 DJ turntable and spinning smartphone holder that DJs will love.

By placing their phone into the smartphone holder of the disk-shaped DJYRO, DJs can spin their music into a jam party. Using the built-in motion sensors of smartphones, the DJYRO lets you transform music being played from your smartphone into the sounds heard at DJ-hosted clubs and parties.

Using the DJYRO's app, anyone can record their own voices, videos, or sound effects to be played backwards or forwards at any speed. It also contains a library of pre-loaded sounds and videos, and offers users the capability to scratch, mix, and sample on top of any music stored on their smartphone.

The DJYRO provides more than just DJ music. Through the use of its built-in fiber optics and the smartphone's own LED flashlight, the DJYRO...

TSMC to start mass production of Apple A11 chip in...

Although the iPhone 8 (and iPhone 7s counterparts) are not expected until the fall, Apple suppliers have to ramp production months in advance to secure the millions of parts necessary for the launch. Economic Daily News is today reporting that TSMC will begin mass production of the Apple A11 SoC, which will power the 2017 iPhones, in April.

The chip inside the iPhone 7 is the Apple A10 Fusion, which includes two high-power cores and two lower-power cores. The design of the A11 chip is unknown but the report says it is fabricated using a 10 nanometer process ..

India’s government looks at ways to accommodate tax...

India’s government is working on certain options to accommodate demands related to tax and duty concessions sought by Apple for setting up a manufacturing unit in India, reports Asian Age.

Although the Finance Ministry has apparently rejected the demands of the tech giant, senior executives of the company met an inter-ministerial group recently to deliberate upon the issue, the article adds. Unnamed sources told Asian Age that India’s government is trying to find ways through which certain support measures could be extended to the American firm.

Getting a foothold in India has been a challenge for Apple. The company has opened its retail stores in a number of countries around the world, but not in India. The country has restrictive real estate investment laws for foreign companies.

What’s more, India’s Finance and...
