Day One journal app adds printed books

Keeping a personal journal or diary is a wonderful way to keep track of personal growth, and the best way to do it on any Apple device -- Mac, iPhone or iPad -- is to use the Day One app ($4.99, half-off sale). While many people are content to view the ups and downs of their lives within the confines of an app, others may prefer to see their lives unfold in a traditional book. That's the new feature of Day One that longtime journal writers are going to love -- printed books.

The books are relatively inexpensive, costing anywhere from $14.99 for 50 pages up to $49.99 for a 400 page book. Have a need for a hardcover rather than the regular paperback cover? Add $5. Each book features a unique design, maps and stats, full-color photo printing on high-quality paper, and customizable covers and content. All of the creation,...

Move over, Starbucks. Apple wants to be the gathering spot for younger generations.

This week, Apple announced a series of educational sessions in all 495 Apple store locations around the U.S., starting in May. Titled “Today at Apple,” the hands-on sessions will bring together artists, photographers, and musicians at the top of their game to give customers tips on how to best use their Apple gear and software.

“‘Today at Apple’ is one of the ways we’re evolving our experience to better serve local customers and entrepreneurs,” Apple’s senior vp of retail Angela Ahrendts said. “We’re creating a modern-day town square, where everyone is welcome in a space where the best of Apple comes together to connect with one another, discover a new passion, or take their skill to the next level.

Apple Dubai Mall: Gulf Business

On Thursday, April 27, Apple is set to open a new eco-friendly retail store in Dubai at the Dubai Mall. The store was designed by Foster + Partners -- an architectural firm that has worked with Apple on many of the flagship stores -- and features 18 "solar wings" that not only help to shield the sun during hot days, but are also considered one of the world's largest kinetic art pieces.

The "wings" mimic the purpose and artistic sense of the traditional Arabic "Mashrabiya", and are seen in the photos accompanying this post as the latticework over the windows. They're 37.5 feet high, and are each made up of 340 carbon fiber reinforced polymer rods. The wings cover the entire 180 glass facade of the...

Dutch judge: Apple can't replace broken iPads...

A judge in The Netherlands has ruled against on Apple for its common practice of replacing broken iPads with factory refurbished units, stating that the faulty units must replaced with new equipment.

The ruling is the end result of a 2015 lawsuit in which a woman purchased an iPad Air 2 with AppleCare. The unit experienced Wi-Fi connectivity issues after four months, and Apple replaced the iPad under warranty with a refurb. That's something that is usual practice for Apple, and it is even outlined in the terms of service for all iPads.

The judge in the case ruled on April 18 that Apple can only replace a device purchased as new with a new device. When a person purchases a refurbished product, that...

Apple Store Union Square, San Francisco, CA

Apple announced today that the top 100 Apple stores worldwide will be redesigned to include a "grove" of live trees, meeting spaces, and large, dominating video screens like that in the new Apple Union Square retail outlet in San Francisco. In addition, 495 locations that are properly equipped will add a new educational event series called "Today at Apple".

The store redesigns will include a name change for the Genius Bar, which will become the Genius Grove in an obvious paean to the trees in the stores. In a blow to Apple’s original content ambitions, the company has delayed the scheduled April premiere of Carpool Karaoke to later this year.

In a strange move, Apple postponed the launch party for the full-length show, its first foray into original content, twice before canceling it altogether. According to Reuters, a party originally scheduled for March was rescheduled for Monday, but that party too was postponed.

Apple didn’t say why the series, an extended version of James Corden’s segments on CBS’s The Late Late Show, was being pushed back. A CBS Television Studios spokesperson told Reuters that the company is “excited about our Carpool Karaoke for Apple Music and look forward to everyone seeing it later this year.”

Last night we live streamed episode 5 of AWT TV, and it was a good one. Featuring just Steve and Marty (Dennis is taking a much-needed vacation), the show celebrated the second birthday of another revolutionary Apple device -- the Apple Watch.

During the show we talked about the Watch, its impact in both mobile payment and everyday life, and what the future could bring. One idea brought up by Steve is that an Apple Watch with built-in cellular (LTE) data capabilities could easily act as the "brains" for an Apple AR/VR headset.

Google Photos 2.14 adds AirPlay functionality

'Carpool Karaoke' delayed until later in...

Apple's first attempt at original video content has been delayed again. "Carpool Karaoke," which is a spinoff of the namesake segment on The Late Late Show with James Corden, was first announced last July. Initially the show was to debut in March and was then pushed back to this month. Now the latest from Apple after postponing a launch party is that "Carpool Karaoke:The Series will premiere on Apple Music later this year."

Apple is partnering with CBS Television Studios on the series, and CBS released a similar statement yesterday saying "We're excited about our 'Carpool Karaoke' for Apple Music, and look forward to everyone seeing it later this year." Apple is also working on a game-style reality TV show called "Planet of the Apps" for release at an unspecified date.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales launches Wikitribune,...

Laura Hazard Owen, Neiman Lab:

Good things can happen when a crowd goes to work on trying to figure out a problem in journalism. At the same time, completely crowdsourced news investigations can go bad without oversight — as when, for example, a group of Redditors falsely accused someone of being the Boston Marathon bomber. An entirely crowdsourced investigation with nobody to oversee it or pay for it will probably go nowhere. At the same time, trust in the media is at low and fact checking efforts have become entwined with partisan politics.

So what would happen if you combined professional journalism with fact checking by the people? On Monday evening, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales launched Wikitribune, an independent site (not affiliated with Wikipedia or the Wikimedia Foundation) “that brings journalists and a community
of volunteers together” in a combination that Wales hopes will combat fake news online — initially in English, then in other languages.

iOS Control Center “bug” discovered, may lead to...

This qualifies as a sort of odd bug, but it might be relevant.

The error, first spotted by Italian web site AmiciApple, this bug appears to work with iOS versions as recent as the latest iOS 10.3.2 beta and stems from odd settings within Control Center. While the chances of it happening are rare, they’re still possible.

To activate the bug, pull up Control Center, simultaneously select one option from the bottom bar (Alarm Clock, Calculator, or Camera), Night Shift, and AirDrop. You have to use three fingers to tap them all at once and it may take a few times to actually work.

Your iOS device will freeze for a few seconds, then it should automatically “re-spring” and everything will return to normal. In some cases, however, it doesn’t automatically re-spring and you’ll have to manually reboot your device completely.

As seen in the video below, it’s unlikely that you’ll accidentally trigger the error, but it’s still helpful to be aware of it.

Rumor: Apple could be exploring space-based...

Apple may be getting involved in orbital communications satellites.

A recent report has stated that Apple poached two Google satellite executives to form a new hardware team within the company. The new hires, John Fenwick and Michael Trela, headed up Google’s spacecraft operations and satellite engineering, respectively.

The report noted that both Fenwick and Trela will report to Greg Duffy, the founder of Dropcam who was hired by Apple earlier this year. The trio is though to be working on a project to develop Apple’s own satellite program to beam broadband Internet access to assorted locations.

Apple has also recently entered a partnership with Boeing to launch more than 1,000 low-orbit satellites. The company has reportedly been involved in discussions with the aerospace firm about being either an investor or a partner in the project.

This could represent a new segment of business for Apple, as it’s estimated that competitor SpaceX could generate...

Our Sci-Fi Future: Silly vs. Terrifying

The future is now, or at least it is coming soon. Today's technological developments are looking very much like what once was the domain of science fiction. Maybe we don't have domed cities and flying cars, but we do have buildings that reach to the heavens, and drones that soon could deliver our packages. Who needs a flying car when the self-driving car is just down the road? The media often notes the comparisons of technological advances to science fiction, and the go-to examples cited are often Star Trek, The Jetsons and various 1980s and 90s cyberpunk novels and similar dark fiction.

LA schools' iPad program flawed from beginning...

The Los Angeles Unified School District's failed iPad deployment was botched early on, according to a review by the US Education Department. The federal agency says that it first of all put too hard an emphasis on using Apple hardware and software, ignoring cheaper options that could have saved money for the District and taxpayers. In July the USD said it was shifting to a strategy involving Chromebooks and Windows devices, such as the Microsoft Surface....

Hands On: PhotoWatermark (OS X)

It's a different world. You might be the sort who would never take photo from a website and use it in your own book, but today if an image is online, it's as if the world sees it as fair game. Maybe that's a peek into our base immorality and the ultimate cataclysmic self-destruction of humanity, or maybe it's just that cut and paste is easy. Whatever it is, though, it's happening and you cannot stop it – not even with an application like this: but if PhotoWatermark can't prevent the copying of images, it can help photographers and artists considerably by adding identifying text to your image...

Flickr: iPhones surpass Nikon, claim second most-...

While Canon remains the most popular overall camera, the built-in cameras on smartphones from Apple and Samsung have -- despite inherent limitations -- steadily risen in popularity....

Multiple reports point to record-breaking Apple...

While the idea that Apple probably had another record-breaking holiday quarter (what the company calls fiscal 2015 Q1) is unsurprising to all but selected pundits, a spate of reports released on Monday may be painting a general portrait of not just significant improvement, but more importantly growth in key areas of importance both to investors and analysis as well as to the health of the company. Sales of Macs look to be way up, iOS devices are selling much better in a key foreign market, and Apple's suppliers are flourishing -- all signs that point to better-than-expected quarter....

A good magic trick, even in the 21st century, will still get people to stop and watch and try to figure out how it is done. Hands On: Word of the Rings (iOS)

Word games are fairly numerous at this point. You've got your Boggle-style games, your Scrabble-style games, your crosswords and word searches. There are a lot of duplicates out there -- so when we find a fresh, new game, we tend to get pretty excited. One such app is Word of the Rings, by James Porter, a game that quite literally puts an interesting twist on the genre....

The car is on display at this week's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and its dash system shows options for both CarPlay and MirrorLink connections. HomeKit requires Apple TV hub for remote Siri...

People wanting to control HomeKit-enabled devices remotely through Apple's Siri must have an Apple TV at home to serve as a hub, according to Verge sources, including two launch partners and a person said to be "close to HomeKit's development." Siri controls will always work while an iPhone or iPad is on the same network as a HomeKit device, but until now it wasn't fully clear how remote operation might work. The Apple TV must also be a third-generation model running at least v7.0 firmware or newer. Notably, remote operation without Siri -- using the vendor app for a HomeKit product directly -...
