Laurene Powell Jobs to speak on philanthropy at Code...

It's rare when the public hears from the widow of Steve Jobs, but Laurene Powell Jobs will be speaking at next month's Code conference about her approach to philanthropy. Unlike her husband's famously well scripted and rehearsed onstage "performances," Powell Jobs will converse with California senator Kamala Harris about the work of her organization -- the Emerson Collective -- and how she feels philanthropy should benefit society as a whole.

According to a Forbes writeup earlier this year, the combination of the Laurene Powell Jobs Trust and Powell Jobs' personal fortune has an estimated net worth of $20 billion. The trust owns 2.5% of Disney, while Powell Jobs owns 4%. One would expect that she would own a larger stake in the company her late husband co-founded -- Apple -- but you'd be wrong. She owns just 0.7% of Apple.

Connected car accessory maker Automatic bought by...

Automatic, the maker of the Automatic Pro and Automatic Lite devices that link to an iPhone to track and read driving data, has been purchased by satellite radio provider SiriusXM for over $100 million. According to a blog post breaking the news, the brands will remain separate and Automatic will continue to focus on the connected car.

Automatic Link. Photo ©2017 Steven Sande

Automatic's product line began in 2013 with the Automatic Link. Plugged into the onboard diagnostic port that has been in most cars since 1996, the device sends drive tracking information and diagnostic reports to a connected iPhone app. Last year, the company abandoned the original Automatic Link except for minimal functions, replacing the device with two models. The Automatic Lite is similar to the original device, while the...

Apple allegedly working on peer-to-peer money...

Sending money to others for personal payments currently requires a service like Square Cash or Venmo. Apple is reportedly working on a similar peer-to-peer money transfer service as part of the Apple Pay service that would let users send money to one another quickly and with security as a primary focus.

Venmo's iOS app

Re/code says that Apple has apparently held discussions with top names in the payment industry about the service, which might launch later this year. It's also noted that Apple has talked with Visa about a prepaid debit card service that would be tied to the peer-to-peer payment transfers. Think of an Apple-branded digital debit card that could be used at retailers, letting users instantly spend money that is transferred to them without needing to deposit it into an intermediary bank account.

If Apple decides to...

IDC is out today with its data for the worldwide smartphone market in Q1 which show that Apple remained largely flat during the quarter following the introduction of its new Product (RED) iPhone 7 and refreshed iPhone SE. Apple remaining steady comes as the rest of the market grew 4.3% during the quarter.

IDC’s data shows Apple shipped around 51.6 million iPhones during the quarter, up very slightly from 51.2 million in the year ago quarter:

Apple Music redesign on the way for iOS 11,...

Bloomberg is reporting that a new version of Apple Music -- most likely embedded in iOS 11 -- will ship later this year that begins shifting the emphasis of the service from music to original video programming. The report notes that the new Apple Music service could host upwards of 10 original shows by the end of 2017.

At this point, video is available in Apple Music but it's difficult to find -- tap on the Browse button, then scroll down to "Music Videos". There you'll currently find a mishmash of videos based on featured content, top videos or new releases. There's no way to easily get the app to show you videos from your favorite genres, nor will it show items personalized for your tastes.

iOS "number" updates are usually where Apple makes major changes to its built-in applications, so it's likely that any improvements to...

Opinion: We may now be just two or three years away...

I’ve always been a keen photographer. At 14, my father bought me an old fully-manual film SLR, and my aunt gave me her old darkroom equipment, so my bedroom became a darkroom with a bed in the corner.

When the first DLSRs hit the market, I waited impatiently for them to drop below the $1000 mark. That early Nikon D70 was replaced by a D3 which I still have today. If you had suggested then that it could be just a few short years before cameraphones could replace a DSLR, I’d have laughed.

But camera technology has developed at an astonishing pace. That D3 already spends most of its time gathering dust in a drawer. My Sony a6300 compact camera delivers near-identical results in most situations. And the camera I use most on an everyday basis is my iPhone.

There are just four remaining pieces of the puzzle before an iPhone can replace a DSLR, and it looks to me like we’re just 2-3 years...

Report: Apple in talks to extend Apple Pay with...

Apple is reportedly in talks with partners to launch its own person-to-person payments service, extending the breadth of Apple Pay and closely competing with services like Venmo or Square Cash. Recode reports that the company wants to announce the payments-between-friends feature later this year — although plans can change.

Recode says that Apple has also held talks with Visa about the possibility of creating virtual Apple prepaid debit cards. This would allow users to spend the money they get from the new peer-to-peer payments service instantly without having to wait for the money to clear in their bank account.

Building a Hackintosh without the benefit of...

Jeff Benjamin, 9to5Mac:

In a previous article, posted shortly after Nvidia announced its new Pascal Mac drivers, I briefly discussed my plans to build a new Hackintosh. I’ve been planning and working on the machine for over a week, and I’m finally at the point where I can share the results of my journey.

This isn’t my first Hackintosh build, but it’s the first build where I decided to go about it without the assistance of the excellent tools over at tonymacx86. I’ve been long interested in building a Hackintosh using just the Clover EFI Bootloader, and that’s exactly what I did for this build.

Going about it this way allowed me to learn more about the process, and helped me to see that the entire premise, while tedious at times, is actually fairly straightforward. In this initial post, I’ll talk about some of my reasoning behind my hardware choices, and share some initial experiences and benchmark results.

Apple Wants To Turn Its Music App Into a One-Stop...

Jimmy Iovine, one of the heads of Apple Music, has long expressed desires to make Apple Music "an entire pop cultural experience." The company, he has previously said, will do so partly by including original video content into its music app. Now, in an interview with Bloomberg, he added that the company plans to include original shows and videos with high-profile partners such as director J.J. Abrams and rapper R. Kelly. Iovine adds, from the interview: A music service needs to be more than a bunch of songs and a few playlists. I'm trying to help Apple Music be an overall movement in popular culture, everything from unsigned bands to video. We have a lot of plans. We have the freedom, because it's Apple, to make one show, three shows, see what works, see what doesn't work until it feels good. The article also sheds light on Iovine's personality: Iovine fidgets when he talks. As his mind wanders, he takes his jacket off, then puts it back on. He frequently clutches his legs,...

Google has so many apps these days, it’s easy to forget what they all do. So, if you happened to see an update to the Trips app that you downloaded last year but didn’t use much, you’re probably wondering what’s new. Or maybe you just need a refresher on what it does.

A smart planner and city guide, Trips is meant to be the one-stop travel companion for all of your tourism needs. It pulls reservation information from Gmail, suggests places to go, and even lets you download everything for offline use. If you're a frequent traveler it's a way better option than Maps, and while the new update isn’t a huge one, it does bring a few features that might make people more apt to use it.

Apple rumored to be finalizing design of Siri-based...

Despite recent comments from Apple executives that the company has "no apparent interest in copying the Echo," Australian leak source Sonny Dickson tweeted this morning that Apple is "currently finalizing" designs for its own Amazon Echo competitor.

According to Dickson, the product will be marketed as a Siri/AirPlay device using some sort of Beats technology and powered by a variant of iOS. Amazon's Echo has become a runaway hit in the consumer electronics space, with the Alexa AI now showing up in devices made by other companies. As an example, the Ecobee4 smart thermostat -- which works with Apple's HomeKit -- will allegedly have Alexa built-in.

Apple is currently finalising designs for their Alexa competitor, expected to be marketed as a Siri/AirPlay device.

“Like using a lunchbox to make lunch”

Ars Technica story about Masahiro Sakurai the creator of 1992’s Kirby’s Dream Land:

Sakurai recalled how HAL Laboratory was using a Twin Famicom as a development kit at the time. Trying to program on the hardware, which combined a cartridge-based Famicom and the disk-based Famicom Disk System, was “like using a lunchbox to make lunch,” Sakurai said.

As if the limited power wasn’t bad enough, Sakurai revealed that the Twin Famicom testbed they were using “didn’t even have keyboard support, meaning values had to be input using a trackball and an on-screen keyboard.”

Amazing story. Be sure to follow the link to the full story, complete with pictures.

Google’s ingenious tool to fight patent trolls, a...

TechCrunch:

Google and Intertrust today announced the launch of PatentShield, a new program that aims to help defend startups from patent litigation — in return for a stake in those companies.

The basic idea here is to give startups that join the program ownership of a selection of patents from Google’s and Intertrust’s portfolio that they can then use as a deterrent against potential patent litigation from established players in their fields. Google is seeding the program with a selection of its own patents and Intertrust, which itself has built up a patent portfolio around media streaming, IoT, security and other areas, will also give these startups access to some of its own patents and its intellectual property team.

If a startup gets sued, it can then choose patents from the PatentShield portfolio to defend itself by countersuing its opponents.

This truly is ingenious, a terrific use of Google’s patent portfolio. The cost to Google is relatively...

This is a phenomenal interview, as you might expect from the excellent Steven Levy. I was surprised to learn that Twitter was not invited to any of Trump’s tech roundtables or advisory councils.

One highlight that stands out:

Q: There have been well-publicized instances where women have been exposed to horrible treatment. What was your feeling when you understood how common it was for women like Leslie Jones to be harassed? Did you feel that was something that you failed at?

Dorsey: We recognized that the very nature of the product was giving unfair advantage to people who wanted to harass. So we needed to change the product experience. We made it a priority last year, but to be very frank and honest, we only shipped one meaningful thing all year. So our progress is not something that we are proud of.

And:

Q: Why was that? Why did you fall short?

Dorsey: A variety of...

Rumor: Apple to improve battery life in next-gen...

The current rumor has it that the next-gen iPhone’s battery will be able to get over power consumption and space-related hurdles, potentially allowing for longer battery life than ever.

Rumor has it that this year’s flagship “iPhone 8” will boast a large 2,700 mAh battery, on par with the high-end 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus.

The next-gen iPhone is said to have dimensions similar to the 4.7-inch iPhone 7, which features a 1,960 mAh capacity battery, while the iPhone 7 Plus has a 2,900 mAh battery.

It’s thought that Apple will pull this off by shrinking the parts inside its flagship next-gen handset, which is rumored to debut in September.

According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to use a stacked logic board, called a substrate-like PCB mainboard, to allow more space inside of the “iPhone 8” chassis.

By shrinking the size of the mainboard, Apple may be able to allow for greater energy efficiency. The one-two punch of a larger...

New data from CIRP suggests that iPhone 7 sales suffered as a result of having a very similar design to the older iPhone 6 and 6s. The firm says that it led more buyers to opt for an older model in the last quarter.

Despite upgraded features like each new flagship iPhone release, the legacy models accounted for almost a third of iPhones sold in the quarter, the highest percentage since Apple started releasing two new phones each fall in 2014.

There was, however, some good news that helped protect the Average Selling Price (ASP) …

We’ve poked fun at Samsung before for its issues with the Galaxy S7’s battery and its propensity to catch fire and/or explode.

Now, the Late Show seems to have delivered the finishing move with its mock commercial for the Samsung Galaxy S8.

In the commercial, the announcer asks one simple question: “How can we design a smartphone that won’t catch on fire?”

You’ll like the answer.

Granted, Apple’s had its own share of battery-related issues in the past, but this is a good bit of satire either way.

And, also, watch out for the bees.

What to expect from Apple's Q2 2017 earnings...

Did you forget to mark your calendar for the orgy of charts and numbers that is Apple’s legally mandated quarterly release of its financial results? If so, have no fear–I remembered to mark mine for next Tuesday, May 2, when Apple will release the results in the early afternoon (Cupertino time) and then offer some of its executives up to financial analysts in an hour-long telephone call.

This is the season where Wall Street tries to intuit where Apple’s stock price will go, and those of us more focused on Apple’s products will scrape for any suggestion about how those products are selling and what might come next.

It can be easy to joke about these quarterly rituals–I’ve already done it several times, and this is only my third paragraph–but they’re vital opportunities to take a rare glimpse into Apple’s inner workings and the thinking of Apple executives about the company’s business strategies. Yes, it’s a choreographed dance, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t glean...

InvenSense hit with lawsuit over concessions in...

A new lawsuit filed against gyroscope and accelerometer supplier for Apple, InvenSense, accuses the company of failing to tell investors about the concessions it made to secure a recent deal. "Instead of revealing the true condition of the company and its prospects, defendants hid those facts from investors and chose to issue strong guidance and paint a picture of a bright future with a new mega-customer," the complai...
