GT Advanced's CEO under fire for stock trade...

The CEO of sapphire supplier GT Advanced Technologies, Tom Guitierrez, is facing scrutiny for a $160,000 sale of company stock he made on September 8th. The Wall Street Journal reports that the sale came just a day before Apple announced the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which some rumors had suggested would use sapphire screen covers. Instead the phones were revealed to be using a variant of Corning Gorilla Glass, and GT's share price fell from $17.38 to around the $11 mark. Yesterday the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, causing shares to plummet below $1. They have since reboun...

Study finds Siri causes high level of unsafe driver...

A new study from AAA on the potential safety risks of hands-free systems for vehicles warns Apple’s Siri presents a “relatively high” level of distraction. In its tests, AAA ranked use of Siri as a “category 4 level of mental distraction,” which puts it in last place compared to other hands-free voice controlled systems from the big car makers including Ford, Mercedes, Hyundai, Chevrolet, Chrysler, and Toyota. It was also the only voice controlled system that resulted in two crashes in the simulator study:

To understand the workload rating associated with interacting with Siri, it is first useful to consider what is not causing the effect. The high level of...

Sapphire company CEO sold $160,000 in stock days...

GT's stock rode high on the iPhone rumors for months, but it dropped when the new iPhones launched without sapphire and fell down a hole when it announced the bankruptcy filing.

GT Advanced Technologies, the company Apple currently relies on for sapphire in its iOS devices, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday. The filing came just a few weeks after Apple announced its new iPhones on September 10—both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were widely expected to use sapphire instead of glass to protect their screens from scratches. This didn't happen, though, and it sent GT's stock price sliding downward even before yesterday's bankruptcy filing pushed it off a cliff.

Now The Wall Street Journal reports that GT CEO Thomas Gutierrez has...

How-To Make iOS 8 and iPhone 6 Work With Google Voice

Many users of the new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models are finding it impossible to re-link with Google Voice for voicemail. When entering in the classic **004*1[GV-Number]# sequence users are seeing a "Setting Registration Failed" message instead of the happy success note. Fear no longer. Marcel Brown sorted this out and you have two ways you can enable Google Voice on your new phone. First is to call AT&T and have them set up "conditional call forwarding" for you, or you can set up the 3 big use cases all by yourself with some slightly different commands. "234567890" in Marcel's examples would be replaced with your Google Voice number, including area code:

Call Forward if Unanswered: *61*1234567890#
Call Forward if Unreachable: *62*1234567890#
Call Forward if Busy: *67*1234567890#

Set all three of these and you're good to go. To check the status of these enter *#61#, *#62# and *#67# respectively. To deactivate, enter ##61#, ##62# and/or ##67#. Enjoy!...

Three theories why iOS 8 adoption is slow on the...

Nearly three weeks after Apple rolled out its latest mobile operating system, the company says less than half of visits to its App Store come from devices with iOS 8 installed. Just 47 percent have upgraded, while 47 percent are still running iOS 7 (and 6 percent are clinging to even earlier versions). These figures are unusual: Apple’s OS adoption rate is famously fast. So why are people holding on to iOS 7?

At first, the rate of iOS installs skyrocketed —up to 46 percent in just six days. In the next two weeks, that number ticked up just 1 percent. iOS 8 still has time to challenge iOS 7’s adoption rate, which hit 75 percent after three months and became Apple’s fastest-growing mobile OS, but it seems like slow going so far.

Samsung earnings expectations plummet

AP Wire:

The steep decline in income, likely the widest fall in Samsung’s earnings history, shows how the company’s quick rise to the world’s top smartphone maker with the Galaxy phones faces what might be its biggest challenge. Its struggle is apparent in both the high-end phone segment where it competes with Apple Inc. and the low-end segment where it faces rising competition from the likes of China’s Xiaomi and Lenovo.

This has been coming for a while now, but there’s no proof like watching earnings projections fall by half in a very short time.

Digitimes says that with iPhone 6 Plus exceeding expectations, Apple has asked the supply chain to move some production away from its 4.7 inch phone. This will mean that shipments for iPhone 6 will fall by 3-4 million units to accommodate the change in production lines.

Sketchy rumor suggests Apple will converge a...

A new rumor from Digitimes makes the bold claim that Apple is working on an ‘iPad’ (tablet device) that runs both Mac OS X and iOS. This is sourced as ‘according to rumors in the upstream supply chain’, so read with skepticism. Supply chain analysis can often be incorrect about Apple’s future software plans.

The report says that two versions of a 12.9 inch iPad are in development. One of which is the more typical larger iPad that has been rumored for a while now, but the other is a multifunction device that can run both OS X and iOS. Digitimes notes that it does not know whether both devices will actually enter mass production for public release. It indicates the larger iPad is currently headed for an early 2015 debut. Frankly, a 2-in-1 device seems unlikely.

Apple to buy up 25 percent of world's DRAM by...

New estimates on Apple's consumption of DRAM for mobile phones and chips to be used in the iPhone 6 line alongside the Apple Watch will continue to keep demand at high levels, two different sources report in various trade publications. One analyst believes that by this time next year, Apple will require some 25 percent of the world's output of DRAM chips, continuing to constrain supplies for competitors. The company is also said to have ordered up to 250 million chips for its iPhone 6 line and Apple Watch across the next year....

Since it was introduced nearly five years ago, the iPad has made a huge cultural impact on families, schools and seniors, but the full extent of the influence on the former two groups has been made more obvious in a new survey of children ages 6-12 conducted by youth and family research firm Smarty Pants. The 2014 edition of the firm's "Young Love" survey found that the iPad was the highest-rated brand name with children and families, beating out 255 other iconic contenders including Nickelodeon, Disney and McDonald's....

A new version of password manager 1Password has been released for the iPhone and iPad, offering support for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus in the form of 3x higher resolution images and improved icons. The update also improves Touch ID support to be more reliable, and simplifies the app's security settings. A new option has been added to disable third-party keyboards inside the 1Password app (since theoretically such keyboard could transmit keystrokes), and users can now create tags to help sort data. The app itself is free, but a "pro" in-app purchase to unlock additional features costs $10....

According to Apple, people have all but stopped...

Apple’s iOS share numbers as tabulated by App Store visits are out for the first week of October and they are a “head scratcher”. iOS 8 gained only 1 point from 46% to 47%  since September 21st which should have well exceeded 1% gain by the millions of new iPhone 6/Plus shipments alone – even if not one person had updated their iPhone 5/s/c. Even more confusing is that the “Earlier” category of iOS 6 and before devices actually grew in percentage from 5% to 6% over the previous two week period.

It is possible some people downgraded to iOS 7 (which was an option until just after 8.0.2 was released) while others have stayed put on their current iOS version because of a succession of errors in rolling out iOS 8. Combined with the large amount of space required to do an over the air update, it appears that iOS users have all but stopped...

Review: Mo-Fi headphones by Blue

Blue, a company that has specialized in microphones, has turned its techniques the other way around to create a set of serious headphones -- called Mo-Fi -- with an almost Apple-like attention to detail, from the packaging to the execution of the design. This is the sort of thing we were hoping Apple would create for Beats after the first year or two, but here it is now. At $350, they are not meant for casual listening, and it might be dangerous to wear them while walking the streets. They are primarily intended for serious listening to high-quality music. Are they for you? Find out in our rev...

Adobe goes Mobile with New Creative Cloud Updates

Adobe rolled out a collection of new and updated apps for the iPhone and iPad on Monday that make mobile devices a bigger part of your design process. Adobe's iPad app parade let you create graphics on your iPad and easily transfer them to Photoshop and Illustrator on your Mac through your Creative Cloud account.

The Mac Observer Spin: Adobe already owns graphic design on the desktop, and now the company wants to make sure it owns the market on our iPads and iPhones, too. Adobe gets that these are more than content consumption devices.

Apple’s sapphire manufacturing partner files for...

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were rumored to have sapphire-coated screens right up until the announcement, but it didn't come to pass.

Megan Geuss

Back in late 2013, Apple signed a deal with a company named GT Advanced Technologies to build a sapphire manufacturing plant in Arizona. Apple would build the facility, and GT would manufacture sapphire for use in Apple's devices. Sapphire is even harder and more scratch-resistant than the Corning Gorilla Glass used in many smartphones and tablets today, and the deal gave rise to rumors that Apple would be using sapphire to protect the screens of its new iPhones.

Those rumors were repeated many times in subsequent months, though others indicated that it wasn't a sure thing. The...

Apple updates definitions to prevent “iWorm” botnet...

Among other items, the XProtect list now includes several iWorm variants.

Andrew Cunningham

In case you missed it over the weekend, MacRumors reports that Apple has updated OS X's built-in XProtect malware definitions list to include the Mac.BackDoor.iWorm malware we reported on late last week. The iWorm malware allegedly managed to infect more than 17,000 Macs worldwide, and it was apparently using a (now closed) Minecraftserverlists board on reddit to distribute the IP addresses of control servers to infected Macs.

XProtect was first introduced to OS X in Snow Leopard in response to the MacDefender malware that managed to...
