Apple Posts iPhone 6 Video Narrated by Jony Ive

Apple has posted a 6 minute and 23 second video introducing iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus that is partially narrated by Sir Jony Ive, Apple's king of design. This is the informational type of video that Apple shows at its media events, like today's event at the Flint Center in Cupertino. It covers all the new features in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as Apple's design philosophy on the device.

Not-quite-hands-on with the Apple Watch, and the...

The Apple Watch Sport and its blue Sport Band

Megan Geuss

CN.dart.call("xrailTop", {sz:"300x250", kws:["top"], collapse: true});CUPERTINO, CA—It would be exaggerating to say we got “hands-on” time with the Apple Watch that the company announced this morning. Apple had several tables sprinkled throughout its hands-on booth (the large white building you may have seen in pictures), and you could try on some watches at those tables. But those watches were in a non-interactive demo mode, and the only opportunity we got to see the watches actually working were in carefully guided mini-presentations given by the people at the tables.

Those little song-and-dance routines ran us through the same kinds of things that Tim Cook talked about on stage when he introduced the Apple Watch earlier today—using the “digital crown” to scroll and zoom, drawing and tapping...

The iPhone 5S, 6, and 6 Plus.

Megan Geuss

CN.dart.call("xrailTop", {sz:"300x250", kws:["top"], collapse: true});CUPERTINO, CA—Big phones, long the domain of the Android and Windows Phone OEMs, are finally a reality on Apple’s side of the fence. The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus catapult the iPhone into the large-screen era after two years at the 4-inch screen size introduced by the iPhone 5, and the larger sizes drastically change what the phones are like to hold and to use.

Meet the new iPhones

Let’s start with some general observations that apply to both the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 5 and 5S both had flat fronts, sides, and backs with well-defined edges, but those are gone in the iPhone 6. The glass on the front now curves down slightly all the way around the edge to meet the newly-curved sides and back of the phone. It...

Apple Pay aims to disrupt payment industry

TidBITS:

With Apple Pay, Apple’s self-described mission is to replace your wallet, enabling you to pay a bill by holding an iPhone 6 or 6 Plus, or the forthcoming Apple Watch, up to a payment sensor. No more fumbling with credit cards and signing receipts, or worrying about having enough cash. In theory, at least, Apple Pay both improves the payment experience and brings new levels of security and privacy to credit card payments.

Adam makes a very good point about wallets, too. This won’t replace it for most of us because we need to carry around other cards as well. But it’s a step towards an interesting future.

My question has always been, is using a credit card really all that difficult for most people that they need and want this kind of replacement?

It introduced a drool-worthy smartwatch -- Apple Watch -- in two sizes, three style collections, and six choices of straps. To cap it off, U2 played at the Apple event and agreed to release its first new album in years to 500,000 million iTunes customers for free.

Ask Ars: When should I plan to upgrade my iPhone?

Do you have any of these older iPhones? Here's our advice on whether it's time for a replacement.

Andrew Cunningham

A new iPhone is here. You've spent most of the day watching Apple's announcement, the coverage around it, the reaction to the announcement and the coverage, and the reactions to those reactions. It's the standard tech news rigmarole, which can be fun, but ultimately doesn't really help people make purchasing decisions.

Let's assume you're a current iPhone owner, and you're being tempted by the new one's wiles. We're here to throw some water on the early adoption fire, to be the voice of reason that tells you whether it's really practical to upgrade or not. Here's a list of all the phones that are going to run iOS 8, and what you should be thinking about if you're looking for a replacement.

iPhone 5S owners: Keep your phone

This recommendation doesn't surprise anyone, right? If you have an iPhone 5S, you didn't buy a phone...

The iPod classic is finally dead, disappears from...

It only took four years, but the iPod classic is finally dead. As part of the Apple website overhaul, the iPod Classic has finally been removed from sale. The new website has been modernized in many ways, but as a byproduct the Classic has been cut from Apple’s lineup.

It was only a matter of time, of course. The last time the iPod Classic was updated at all was in 2008, when storage capacities were adjusted. The design of the iPod Classic dates back to circa 2004. Alas, it is no more. Apple no longer sells a device with a clickwheel.

The iPod shuffle has a four-way button pad that looks like a click...

Gallery: the Apple Watch

Apple CEO Tim Cook went the "one more thing" route at the end of the company's Flint Center media event today and revealed the Apple Watch, the company's first-ever dedicated wearable. Cook said that Apple had to go back to the drawing board in order to create interfaces that worked with a tiny screen, meaning that the company had a lot to reveal—and explain—during the (long) presentation.

Apple Watch launches "early next year" at a starting price point of $349, so in-depth reviews won't appear for some time. For now, though, we have gathered the few pictures we do have into one place. Together, they illustrate many common functions of the watch.

Ars reporters on site at Apple's media event will weigh in later today with hands-on pictures and impressions of the new device.

Apple quietly discontinues iPod classic

Apple appears to have quietly discontinued its venerable iPod classic following today’s event. The iPod Product and iPod Apple Store pages no longer show any references to the older device, nor does it appear on Apple’s refurbished iPod listings. The iPod classic was originally released in 2007 and last updated in 2009, and although it has remained on sale until now, it has been almost entirely ignored by Apple, and raised questions each…

Apple introduces Apple Pay mobile payment platform

Apple today announced Apple Pay, its long-awaited mobile payment system. The technology relies on a mix of Passbook, Touch ID, and new NFC and "Secure Element" hardware in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Users can add credit cards from their iTunes account, or take a photo of one and verify it with the bank. A credit card number isn't stored on a phone or shared, and transactions are tokenized, as was rumored. Should a phone be stolen, Find My iPhone can be used to disable purchasing functions, eliminating the need to cancel cards. Cashiers don't see any of the transaction data....

Apple Announces Smartwatch, Bigger iPhones, Mobile...

Today at Apple's September press conference, they announced the new iPhone 6 models. There are two of them — the iPhone 6 is 4.7" at 1334x750, and the iPhone 6 Plus is 5.5" at 1920x1080. Both phones are thinner than earlier models: 5S: 7.6mm, 6: 6.9mm, 6 Plus: 7.1mm. The phones have a new-generation chip, the 64-bit A8. Apple says the new phones have a 25% faster CPU, 50% faster GPU, and they're 50% more energy efficient (though they were careful to say the phones have "equal or better" battery life to the 5S). Apple upgrade the phones' wireless capabilities, moving voice calls to LTE and also enabling voice calls over Wi-Fi. The phones ship on September 19th, preceded by the release of iOS 8 on September 17th. Apple also announced its entry into the payments market with "Apple Pay." They're trying to replace traditional credit card payments with holding an iPhone up to a scanner instead. It uses NFC and the iPhone's TouchID fingerprint scanner. Users can take a picture of their...

Apple announces September 17th launch date for iOS 8

The details of Apple’s new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets are beginning to come in, but right now, there’s definitive word about iOS 8.

Per Macworld, Apple on Tuesday announced that the next version of its mobile operating system will officially launch on Tuesday, September 17th.

Originally introduced during this year’s Worldwide Developer Conference back in June, iOS 8 offers only incremental changes over its predecessor’s design language, but introduces a slew of new technologies that are destined to have a significant impact on Apple’s mobile ecosystem, such as Handoff, which allows users to seamlessly transfer their work between all the devices they own, a one-handed mode that can help users...

How big is the iPhone 6 Plus? Find out with our...

Aurich Lawson

When Apple announced that it would finally make a large iPhone to compete against all the large Android phones, my first thought was, "Will it even fit in my pocket?" It's hard to get a sense of what things look like in real life from seeing them on a computer screen, even when they're placed next to other objects for scale.

So I grabbed Apple's official press shot of the iPhone 5S compared with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and I whipped up some quick wireframe drawings to scale. You can print them out, cut around the edges with a pair of scissors, and hold the paper outlines in your hand to see just what each size really feels like.

Spoiler alert: the iPhone 6 Plus feels huge.
