When the Scoops Run Dry

800-word report for Bloomberg by Mark Gurman and Alex Webb on Apple’s long-rumored Siri speaker product, with one sentence of actual news:

The iPhone-maker has started manufacturing a long-in-the-works
Siri-controlled smart speaker, according to people familiar with
the matter.

Seriously, that’s about it for news about the product.

Next sentence:

Apple could debut the speaker as soon as its annual developer
conference in June, but the device will not be ready to ship until
later in the year, the people said.

The keynote is five days away and Gurman and Webb don’t know if it’s going to be announced.

Hands-on: Elgato HD60 S – a solid video capture and...

Working with video takes up a significant portion of my day-to-day schedule, and much of that is taken via a mirrorless camera like the Panasonic GH5. Yet, from time to time I find it necessary to capture direct feed video straight from source. In these situations, I’ve enjoyed using Elgato’s Game Capture HD60 S.

While the name ‘Game Capture’ may lead one to believe that the device is only relevant for gamers, it’s actually useful in a lot of different situations that may benefit Mac users. As an example, I used the Game Capture HD60 to capture UEFI BIOS footage for my Hackintosh builds, routing output straight from the video card.

But the Game Capture line of hardware is more than just a capture device; it...

Apple Is Manufacturing a Siri Speaker To Compete...

According to Bloomberg, Apple is manufacturing a Siri-controlled smart speaker that could debut as soon as its annual developer conference in June. "The device will differ from Amazon's Echo and Alphabet's Google Home speakers by offering virtual surround sound technology and deep integration with Apple's product lineup," reports Bloomberg. From the report: Introducing a speaker would serve two main purposes: providing a hub to automate appliances and lights via Apple's HomeKit system, and establishing a bulwark inside the home to lock customers more tightly into Apple's network of services. That would help combat the competitive threat from Google's and Amazon's connected speakers: the Home and Echo mostly don't support services from Apple. Without compatible hardware, users may be more likely to opt for the Echo or Home, and therefore use streaming music offerings such as Spotify, Amazon Prime Music or Google Play rather than Apple Music. Apple hopes that more advanced acoustics...

Report: Apple's screen-less Siri Speaker is now...

By the end of the year, Apple will have a Siri Speaker to compete against Amazon Echo and Google Home.

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Apple has started overseas production of its Siri-enabled smart speaker. Apple could unveil this highly-anticipated Siri Speaker onstage during the WWDC keynote taking place on Monday, June 5, but the all-new device won’t be ready to ship until later this year.

The Siri Speaker has been designed to compete against the Amazon Echo and Google Home. To differentiate itself from those other products, the Apple smart speaker will boast virtual surround sound and will be more seamlessly integrated with Apple products and services, like Apple Music. In addition, the Siri Speaker will give Apple users a new hub for controlling HomeKit-enabled devices around their home.

What If the iPad Smart Keyboard Had a Trackpad?

Here’s an idea I tossed out on the latest episode of The Talk Show, while talking with Jim Dalrymple about what Apple might do with the iPad Pro: what if they added a trackpad to the Smart Keyboard? David Chapman took the idea and made a quick mockup of what it might look like. (I think the trackpad should be smaller than in his mockup — more like an older MacBook than a new MacBook, but his image conveys the general idea.)

I’m not talking about adding an on screen mouse cursor to iOS for clicking and dragging. That’s a terrible idea. My loose idea for an iPad trackpad is based on a few things:

  1. iOS’s trackpad-like mode for using the on-screen keyboard to move the insertion point around like a mouse cursor while editing text. A lot of people don’t know about this feature, and some who do misunderstand it, but it’...

Trump also got an earful from foreign leaders and Pope Francis urging him to stay in the agreement during his first international trip as president. Cook placed a call to the White House on Tuesday to urge the president to keep the U.S. in the agreement, according to a person familiar with the move. Apple registers new Mac and iPad model numbers...

WWDC is typically a software show, but there’s now more evidence that Apple is planning to announce new hardware as well.

According to information obtained by French website, Consomac, Apple has registered new model numbers with the Eurasian Economic Commission. The assumption is that these numbers coincide with new Macs and new iPads being announced at WWDC next week. Russia requires companies to register all new products that utilize encryption tools.

Five model numbers (A1289, A1347, A1418, A1419, and A1481) belong to products running macOS 10.12, possibly a 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro, a 12-inch MacBook, and perhaps a refreshed MacBook Air. However, MacRumors pointed out that these numbers don’t have the same AXX prefixes for current MacBook models.

Apple maintained its fifth-place position among tablet manufacturers in India despite shipments declining by 38.2% compared to the previous quarter, according to the IDC research group. The iPad has 5.3% of India's tablet marketshare.

The iPad Air 2 remained the country’s top selling model for Apple constituting more than half of its total shipments in the first quarter of 2017. Limited shipments of the iPad mini, which accounted for over one-third of total shipments last quarter, partially accounted for the shrinking of iOS marketshare in India.

Samsung leads India’s tablet market at 21.3% market share. Samsung shipments increased 4% quarter-on-quarter in quarter one of 2017, primarily due to healthy growth in commercial shipments. Samsung’s Galaxy J Max continues to be the top selling model for the company driven primarily by consumer segment, followed by Galaxy Tab A.

Overall, 701,000 tablets were shipped in...

Apple’s iTunes has the upper hand when it comes to a...

If and when movie studios and exhibitors agree on a premium video-on-demand (PVOD) service, Apple's iTunes will have the upper hand as the delivery platform, according to Business Insider.

PVOD is a term for titles that would be available to rent or buy before being made available on most streaming services or through Blu-ray and DVD releases. Industry players don't want movies to be available on PVOD simultaneously with theatrical releases because the first two weeks of a theatrical run are still when studios and exhibitors make the bulk of a movie's income.

Though PVOD hasn't happened yet, some pundits feel it's only a matter of time. Last year, tech billionaire Sean Parker announced plans for a streaming service dubbed Screening Room that would give users the ability to watch major movies still in theaters from their homes for $50. Not surprisingly, the potential...

Elgato has been creating devices that work with Apple's HomeKit home automation framework for a while now, and its latest entry is quite the good-looking device. It features IPX3 water resistance and can be used inside or out.

Amazon Echo Dot Photo © 2017, Steven Sande

Now, who says that Amazon and Apple can't play together nicely? Amazon announced today that its Alexa intelligent assistant -- used in the Amazon Echo ecosystem and a growing number of third party devices -- now supports iCloud Calendar and Reminders.

To link the two, users need to go into the Amazon Alexa app on an iPhone or iPad, then tap the "hamburger button" in the upper left corner of the app display and select Settings. Under Settings, scroll down to Calendar. Tap Calendar, and Apple iCloud Calendar is listed as a choice.

Adding the iCloud Calendar requires that a user have two-factor authentication set up with the Apple ID in question, and then the user needs to log onto appleid.apple.com and request an app-specific password. Once that's done, the app-specific password is entered into Alexa settings and iCloud calendars are added...

Why Apple should replace the Navbar in modern iOS...

Brad Ellis, Medium:

The UINavigationBar, navbar for short, has been around since the original iPhone. Historically, navbars have been convenient and clear, easy to understand and easy to build.

The navbar is the strip at the top of your phone that lets you move in and back out of views. As an example, in the Messages app,the nav bar has an Edit button on the left side, the title Messages in the middle, and a create new message icon on the right. If you tap on a message thread, the nav bar will change to a “<” on the left. Tap that “<” and you’ll navigate back to the main view.

Back to Brad’s post:

Then phones ballooned, enough that the iPhone 7 Plus supplanted sales of the iPad mini. Now, if you own a modern iPhone, navbars can feel unwieldy — literally out of touch.

Burgeoning screens mean the distance between the navbar and our thumbs has grown. The screen on a 7 Plus is so tall it would take a thumb-length increase of 150 percent to reach...

Microsoft has announced that six PC manufacturers (HP, Lenovo, ASUS, VAIO, Huawei, and Xiaomi) are committed to producing LTE-capable laptops. When will Apple join the party?

In 2008, then-CEO Steve Jobs rejected the idea of LTE-equipped laptops because it would add complexity to the device and lock customers in to a particular carrier. As noted by 9to5Mac, neither argument applies today. Antennas have grown ever smaller, and Apple even has a patent for hiding it within the hinge mechanism of a laptop.

Intel is making current and future wireless chips compatible with e-SIMs, so no SIM tray will be needed. And because e-SIMs offer worldwide cross-carrier support, there’s no danger of being...

The new Macs are almost certain to be updated 15-inch and 13-inch MacBook Pros, which are expected to debut at next week’s Apple Worldwide Developer Conference. The filing also hints at a revision to the wireless Magic Keyboard. I'm expecting the keyboard to sport the Touch Bar that was introduced with new MacBook Pros in late 2016.

The 28th annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. The conference will run June 5-9 and will focus on the latest versions of macOS, iOS, watchOS, and tvOS.

Poll: You hate the Essential Phone camera cutout –...

When the Essential Phone was revealed yesterday, all eyes were on one particular design feature: a display that extended right to the top of the phone, with a small cutout for the camera.

We asked whether Apple should take a similar approach with the iPhone 8, and the majority of readers were opposed. Just 22% of you thought it was a good idea, while a full 60% didn’t like it.

But what we’ve seen since then is that Apple may indeed be planning a similar approach with the iPhone 8 …

Apple Pay expected to arrive in Ukraine come Q2 of...

It looks like Apple Pay is en route to the Ukraine come next year.

An Alfa-Bank executive stated that Apple Pay should arrive in the Ukraine in the second quarter of 2018.

The head of Alfa-Bank Ukraine’s e-business, Maxim Patrin, cited an anonymous source from one of the payment systems operating in the country. Alfa-Bank is based primarily in Russia, and may be better known to U.S. readers for alleged ties to U.S. President Donald Trump.

Upon arrival, users will be able to use Apple Pay, adding their Alfa-Bank cards to the platform for transactions.

This marks one of the longest lead times for Apple Pay arriving in a new country. Typically, this is announced only months or weeks before launch.

Apple Pay is currently available in 16 markets, the most recent addition being Italy, which joined earlier this month. Some other examples outside the U.S. include Australia, Canada, China, France, Japan, and Spain.

Stay tuned for additional...

Comment: LTE-equipped laptops on the way from ASUS,...

Apple has been toying with the idea of a SIM-equipped MacBook since at least 2007, as a prototype MacBook Pro later revealed. The company has continued to explore the idea, with a patent on the concept emerging just last year.

Steve Jobs revealed in 2008 that Apple rejected the idea for a couple of reasons. First, that it would add complexity to the device, and second that it would lock customers in to a particular carrier.

Neither argument applies today, and news that a number of major Windows laptop manufacturers are committed to producing LTE-equipped laptops is likely to put pressure on Apple to revisit the idea...

Intel announces X-Series processors, including 18-...

If you’re hankering for an insane next-gen processor that might one day find its way into the Mac, it’s about here.

Intel today has announced its new family of Intel Core processors. Titled as Intel Core X-Series, the new high-end desktop processors are the next step in Intel’s processor family. The units range from $242 – $1,999, the X-Series looks to cover the gamut of next generation desktop processing power.

Perhaps most impressive is the fact that the X-Series i9-7908XE boasts both 18-cores and 36-threads.

The X-Series encompasses a variety of speeds and price points with the Intel Core i5-7640X retailing for 242 with a 4 GHz clock speed, 4 cores, and 4 threads. Moving up, the top of the line i7 chip comes with 10 cores and 20 threads. This Intel Core i7-7820X starts off at 3.6 GHz but can reach 4.5 GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Max.

All of Intel’s X-Series i9 chips get 3.3 GHz base speeds, with 4.5 GHz Intel Turbo Boost Max. Core and thread counts...

What I want to see in iOS 11

There are three certainties in this world: death, taxes, and the fact that Apple will preview iOS 11 at next week’s Worldwide Developer Conference. Lots of new features are expected. Following are some of the things I’m hoping to see:

1) I think we’ll see will a new Automator app that integrates the functionality from the Workflow app that Apple acquired (on iOS 11 and macOS 10.13). It will offer similar functionality to the App Store-based Workflow, but will come equipped with what is being described as “deeper OS/iCloud integration.”

2) It will sport some exciting new augmented reality features, a concept of which can be viewed below, courtesy of the BGR website. However, we may not see the full advantage of such features until the “iPhone 8” arrives (probably in September).

3) Last year Apple released a dark theme for tvOS on the Apple TV, but not for iPhone or iPad. It should arrive on iOS this year

Apple looks to expand Siri’s capabilities on the...

Apple has been granted a patent (number 9,668,024) that shows it has bigger plans for Siri, its digital automated assistant, on the Apple TV. For example, it could e used to interact with a television set-top box and control content shown on a TV.

Also, Siri query suggestions can be provided to the user based on media content shown on a display. Other possibilities include: showing stats from a live sporting event, offering content-based suggestions, and analyzing speech input using voice recognition.

In the patent filing, Apple notes that while iPhones, iPads and Macs have benefitted from Siri, many other user devices lack such convenient control mechanisms. Of course, there is limited Siri support for the Apple TV thanks to the Siri Remote.

However, Apple says that user interactions with media control devices (e.g., televisions, television set-top boxes, cable boxes, gaming devices, streaming media devices, digital video recorders, etc.) can be complicated...

How to open a playlist in a new window in iTunes 12....

With the release of iTunes 12.6 on macOS Sierra, Apple restored the ability to open a playlist in a new window. Why this feature was ever removed shall forever remain a mystery. But here's how you can open a playlist in a new window.

  • Launch iTunes.
  • Control-click or right-click on the playlist you want to open and select Open in New Window.

Voila! That's it.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Ars Technica: Executives from some of the globe's leading technology firms are demanding that Texas not adopt "discriminatory" bathroom legislation. On the table in Texas is a law similar to one enacted -- and later partially repealed -- in North Carolina. The tech companies have aligned themselves with critics of the bill who believe the legislation is unfair to the transgender community. "As large employers in the state, we are gravely concerned that any such legislation would deeply tarnish Texas' reputation as open and friendly to businesses and families," the companies wrote Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. "Our ability to attract, recruit and retain top talent, encourage new business relocations, expansions and investment, and maintain our economic competitiveness would all be negatively affected." Pending Texas Senate legislation would prohibit transgender people in Texas from using restrooms matching their gender identities. The House on...
