Apple-1 computer sold out of Steve Jobs’ garage...

An Apple-1 from the Computer History Museum.

Seg

On December 11, Christie's Auction House will put up an original Apple-1 Personal Computer, which was sold out of Steve Jobs' Palo Alto, California, garage for $600 back in 1976. Christie's estimates that the computer, sold to Charles Ricketts, is worth between $400,000 and $600,000, “the highest estimate yet for an original Apple-1 offered at auction,” the auction house wrote in a press release.

An Apple-1 specialist was hired by Christie's to see whether the Ricketts Apple-1 had suffered any deterioration. He was able to run “the standard original software program, Microsoft BASIC, and also an original Apple-1 Star Trek game” on the vintage computer. It will be sold along with two...

Apple’s iTunes 12 is Apple’s Worst Software Ever,...

For many people, music is an important part of their lives. It's so important that Apple's iTunes should be the finest example of what Apple developers can build. It should be up to Apple's standards as best-in-class software. Unfortunately, iTunes 12 has a subpar user interface, and it is judged to be the worst software Apple has ever produced. It should be withdrawn from the market.

CurrentC exclusivity 'closer to months than...

The COO for MCX, Scott Rankin, has spoken to USA Today in an attempt to defend CurrentC, an upcoming mobile payment system that has taken flak for various policies, such as excluding Apple Pay and Google Wallet at participating retail chains. He says for example that the length of exclusivity is "closer to months than years," which suggests that some retailers signed on for CurrentC -- such as CVS and Rite Aid -- could begin accepting rival payment options by the end of 2015 or 2016....

Critics chafe as Macs send sensitive docs to iCloud...

Representing a potential privacy snare for some users, Mac OS X Yosemite by default uploads documents opened in TextEdit, Preview, and Keynote to iCloud servers, even if the files are later closed without ever having been saved.

The behavior, as noted in an article from Slate, is documented in a Knowledge Base article from December. But it nonetheless came as a surprise to researcher Jeffrey Paul, who said he was alarmed to recently discover a cache of in-progress files he intended to serve as "temporary Post-It notes" that had been silently uploaded to his iCloud account even though he had never intended or wished them to be.

"Apple has taken local files on my computer not stored in iCloud and silently and without my permission uploaded...

Hands On: DragonBox Elements (iOS, Android)

Geometry is often thought of as a branch of mathematics that kids either "get" or "don't get." If children are unable to master the basic Euclidean elements in elementary school, they often struggle with more advanced geometric concepts in middle and high school. This can put them further behind their classmates in subjects like geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. What is a parent to do when their child isn't grasping these important problems? DragonBox Elements by developer WeWantToKnow has offered a creative solution....

Yes, the 5K Retina iMac’s screen runs at 60Hz at 5K...

The Retina iMac on my desk, driving my pair of 27-inch Thunderbolt monitors.

Lee Hutchinson

I’m at the end of my time with the Retina iMac now that our Senior Applemeister Andrew Cunningham is back from his nuptials. He’ll be finishing up our coverage of the device, but I wanted to touch on a couple of final points with the big Mac before I send it on its way to the East Coast. We’ve received several variations of the same question submitted to our feedback form: does the Retina iMac operate at 60Hz in its native 5120x2880 resolution? And if so, how is that even possible, given that DisplayPort 1.2 doesn’t have the bandwidth to support that resolution and refresh rate?

To answer the first question: yes, the iMac’s display runs at 60Hz, even when driving all 14.7 million pixels of its native 5k resolution. Apple directly verified this when I asked; the company also...

NPR:

Tom Magliozzi, one of public radio’s most popular personalities, died on Monday of complications from Alzheimer’s disease. He was 77 years old.

Tom and his brother, Ray, became famous as “Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers” on the weekly NPR show Car Talk. They bantered, told jokes, laughed and sometimes even gave pretty good advice to listeners who called in with their car troubles.

I don’t know a thing about cars but listened to the show simply because Tom and Ray were so entertaining.

Apple

If you have the latest Mac and the latest iPhone or iPad running Apple's latest OSes, and if you have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, the new Continuity features work like magic. What powers that magic? A wide range of network options, including Bluetooth Low Energy (BTLE), peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, regular local networking, and iCloud/iMessage. Each aspect of Continuity actually picks and chooses from these connectivity options, sometimes using more than one.

We looked at Continuity while both iOS and OS X were in beta. Now that they are out, we've gone back and tested what the released version can accomplish. I think this is a complete list of what the current version of Continuity can do, as well as a couple of similar features that Apple...

Apple, Deutsche Bank, and Goldman Sachs will today host a conference call with investors arranging for a bond deal that will be at least partly in euros, a source tells the Wall Street Journal. The bonds could be issued as soon as this week, and would mark the first time Apple bonds would be issued in a currency other than US dollars. The timing for such a deal is believed to be ideal, since borrowing costs in Europe are at record lows....

Russians Tear Down Steve Jobs Memorial Because Tim...

An iPhone-shaped memorial to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs has been torn town in Saint Petersberg because current CEO Tim Cook has publicly announced he is gay. The company that funded the memorial, ZEFS, decided to remove the six-foot tall memorial because of Mr. Cook's sexuality, and as a reaction to reports of NSA spying.

The Mac Observer Spin: Tearing down the Saint Petersberg Steve Jobs memorial was a sad move, and shows just how far some people still have to go before they'll be able to accept people simply for who they are.

Defining a Hero: Why It Matters That Apple's...

Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced he is gay. Typically, when a CEO's personal life becomes a major issue, it is a bad thing. I do think this will have an adverse impact on Apple's sales, but I also think it will have a beneficial impact on the world -- and after some soul searching, I applaud Cook's taking this action. I'll share my thoughts about why a CEO doing something both controversial and potentially heroic is a good thing. CEOs often run into trouble when their personal life takes center stage. Steve Jobs was particularly aware of that.

Apple Retail SVP Angela Ahrendts: Apple Watch...

The Apple Watch’s launch is scheduled to occur in the “spring,” according to Apple Senior Vice President of Retail and Online Stores Angela Ahrendts, later in 2015 than some had originally anticipated. Ahrendts stated the timeframe to retail employees in a video message, a transcript of which was provided by a source. While explaining that employees need to conserve energy for upcoming shopping seasons, Ahrendts stated, “we’re going into the holidays, we’ll go into Chinese New Year, and then we’ve got a new watch launch coming in the spring.”

Up until this point, Apple has consistently said that the Apple Watch will ship in “early 2015,” without specifying a day or month. The broad window was announced at the Apple Watch’s unveil in September, is stated on Apple’s ...
