Apple opens iTunes donation links to support...

Following Hurricane Harvey’s arrival into Texas on Friday, Apple this weekend reactivated iTunes donations to support American Red Cross relief efforts in the area.

On Saturday, Apple posted prominent American Red Cross donation links to its official website and the iTunes Store landing page. The system allows users to quickly contribute $5, $10, $25, $50, $100 or $200 toward ongoing relief efforts.

Apple has stated that users will see 100 percent of proceeds go directly to the Red Cross.

On Friday, Apple CEO Tim Cook offered the following tweet:

“Thanks to all my friends in Texas, new and old, for another amazing visit! Please stay safe as the storm comes ashore,” Cook said.

Harvey made landfall on Friday as a powerful Category 4 hurricane near the town of Rockport, Texas. At least two deaths have been reported, along with massive damage to houses, businesses and other buildings across large swaths of the state.

As of Saturday,...

The TIC Report: The Apple Watch Pro

I’m a runner who uses his Apple Watch to log running times and distances. Alas, like many folks past the age of 50, I suffer from presbyopia (which has nothing to do with Presbyterians). It’s farsightedness caused by loss of elasticity of the lens of the eye, occurring typically in middle and old age.

Which means that sometimes I have to squint to see the display on my Apple Watch while I’m running, even though I have the bigger (42mm) model. Needless to say, that’s inconvenient. CEO Tim Cook is several years younger than me, but he may also have presbyopia.

Enter the Apple Watch Pro, which is now in testing (I’m wearing a prototype in the pic). Forget 42mm. This baby has a 6.5 x 7 inch screen. No more squinting to see the display on this smartwatch.

Apple says the normal sized Apple Watch has an "all day battery life.” With its super-sized body and accompanying larger battery, the Apple Watch Pro has an “all week battery life.”

It will also be able to...

IDC: personal computing device market predicted to...

According to a new IDC forecast, Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker, global shipments of personal computing devices (PCDs), comprised of traditional PCs (a combination of desktop, notebook, and workstations) and tablets (slates and detachables), are expected to continue a slight decline through 2021.

The results show PCD shipments declining from 435.1 million units in 2016 to 398.3 million in 2021, which represents a five-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -1.7%, according to the research group. While growth for the overall PCD market is not expected at any point in the forecast, there are a few interesting trends that continue to develop, according to IDC. Apart from 2018, notebooks show small but steady year-over-year growth throughout the forecast, which is good news for the MacBook Pro and MacBook.

Your Personal Information Is Now the World's...

"Data is clearly the new oil," says Jonathan Taplin, director emeritus of the USC Annenberg Innovation Lab and the author of Move Fast and Break Things: How Google, Facebook and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermined Democracy. While oil was the world's most valuable resource, it has been surpassed by data, as evidenced by the five most valuable companies in the world today -- Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft and Google's parent company Alphabet. CBC.ca reports: What "the big five" are selling -- or not selling, as in the case of free services like Google or Facebook -- is access. As we use their platforms, the corporate giants are collecting information about every aspect of our lives, our behavior and our decision-making. All of that data gives them tremendous power. And that power begets more power, and more profit. On one hand, the data can be used to make their tools and services better, which is good for consumers. These companies are able to learn what we want based on the...
