Promise Technology releases the iOS 11-friendly...

Promise Technology is shipping its newest personal storage device, the Apollo Cloud 2 Duo, which is available in Apple stores. With enhanced iOS 11 features and no monthly or yearly fees, it gives Apple users the ability to store important data off the Internet onto a secure personal cloud, with all transactions encrypted.

The Apollo Cloud 2 Duo houses 8TB of storage capacity. According to the folks at Promise Technologies, you don’t have to know anything about networking or IT to set up your Apollo Cloud because its two-step setup process will have you ready to back up your important documents, photos and videos within minutes. There’s integration with the iOS 11 Files app, as well as drag ’n drop in the operating system update.

You can set up your inner circle and assign storage space on your Apollo Cloud Duo to 40 people of your choosing.  Each member can save content on the personal cloud device, and share their files with others via time limited links.  However,...

Apple File System included in forthcoming macOS High...

This could get annoying.

Apple has released a technical note describing how the new Apple File System (APFS) feature will be limited to Macs with all-flash built-in storage, which means it won’t work with iMacs and Mac minis that include Fusion Drives.

The Fusion Drives were converted to the APFS format during the first beta test of MacOS High Sierra, but support was removed in subsequent betas and not reimplemented.

Following the release of the High Sierra Golden Master, Apple has confirmed APFS will not be available for Fusion Drives and has provided instructions for converting from APFS back to the standard HFS+ format.

As such, users who participated in the public beta and had a Mac with a Fusion Drive converted to APFS will need to convert their drives back to HFS+ format. This involves making a Time Machine Backup, creating a bootable installer, and using Disk Utility to reformat their Macs and reinstall macOS High Sierra.

A curved screen iMac with a built-in tuner, anyone?

Apple has always gone its own way, so I don’t expect to see a curved screen iMac or Thunderbolt Display anytime soon. However, according to the International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly PC Monitor Tracker, there’s increasing interest in such products.

The research group says curved monitors continue to be on the rise, with 3.8% market share in the second quarter of 2017 (2Q17). This represents year-over-year growth of 52.5%. What’s more, monitors with TV tuners are expected to have 4.4% market share in 2Q18, up from 4.1% in 2Q17.

A curved screen iMac makes more sense than a curved screen television. The curve on a curvy TV can be obvious in person and especially in images and video shot from the sides and above, but when you're watching it from the couch, it basically disappears. But with an iMac, you’re sitting directly in front of it and a curved screen could be...

Apple's Worthy iPhone 8 Models May Languish in...

Reviews of Apple's new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus for the most part have been laudatory. However, the reviewers can't seem to get their minds off the jewel of the Apple universe, the iPhone X. Both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus are "awesome" and better than last year's models -- but iPhone shoppers who want to be part of the future will save their money and buy an iPhone X later in the year, suggested reviewer David Pierce. "The iPhones 8 check every box a phone has ever checked before, but they feel like the last of something..."

Apple is granted a patent for ‘lifestyle-based...

How’s your social life? Apple wants to make it even better, and has been granted a patent (number 9,769,107) for “lifestyle-based social groups.”

According to the patent, a user device — with the iPhone being the most logical choice — can learn the movement patterns it’s used fore. Based on the movement pattern, and a user activity history, a computer system can determine a lifestyle of a user, or a meaning of a location.

The system can create a social group based on the lifestyle and the meaning of location. The system can designate the lifestyle or meaning as a theme of the social group. The social group can be an ad hoc social network. For example, the social group can be created without an explicit user request, can be anonymous, and can be lifestyle and location based.

In the patent, Apple says that one of the most popular media for learning about people is online social networks. On a social network website, people can post information about themselves....

Apple Watch Series 3

When is the right time to ship a product? In particular, a hardware product? The answer, sometimes, is not when it’s done, but rather when it’s useful.

The original Apple Watch was too slow. It was too dependent on being tethered to an iPhone. The user interface was too unfocused. But it was useful in some meaningful ways — primarily fitness tracking and as a convenient display for notifications.

With WatchOS 2 and 3, Apple focused the experience on fitness tracking and notifications. With last year’s Series 2 hardware, performance improved and the screen got much brighter, making it far more legible outdoors.

With the addition of cellular networking in Series 3, Apple Watch gains something essential: independence. It’s not just a cool feature. It’s aimed smack dab in the middle of the two things people like best about Apple Watch: notifications and fitness. When are you separated from your iPhone? When you’re exercising. What do you miss most...

Review: Apple Watch Series 3 unlocks new potential...

When the first generation Apple Watch debuted in 2015, people often called it the Dick Tracy watch because you could make phone calls from your wrist like the comic book strip detective known for his 2-way wrist radio. Apple Watch wasn’t fully there yet, however, because it needed a nearby iPhone to actually carry those phone calls. Answering the phone on your watch could be convenient, but it was mostly just a neat demo since you had to carry the iPhone anyway.

Fast forward to today and Apple Watch Series 3 finally lets you make phone calls without carrying your iPhone thanks to optional LTE, but calling is only a part of what cellular enables for the watch. Apple Watch Series 3 can be your dedicated tour guide on your wrist with Maps, your connection to friends and family with Messages, and your always-present personal assistant with Siri — and now even when you’re away from your iPhone.

After using Apple Watch Series 3 for several days, it’s clear to me...

Privacy concerns surround Apple’s facial recognition...

Apple’s new iPhone X, which goes on sale in October, will sport cutting-edge facial recognition technology. While its Face ID technology may attract consumers, some observers have expressed concerns about the brave new world such an offering would usher in.

Last Wednesday, Sen. Al Franken in a letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook raised questions about how Face ID will impact consumers’ privacy and security. RT noted last week that Face ID “could spell disaster for those wanting to keep their private data from the prying eyes of law enforcement.”
However, attorney Richard Lutkus — a partner in the San Francisco office of Seyfarth Shaw, and is a member of the law firm’s Global Privacy & Security Team — concurs that the iPhone X Face ID will become an interesting legal issue.

“When arrested, can cops point the phone at the suspect and have it unlock? In most cases, the passcode is more secure than your fingerprint. They can and...

Notable apps and app updates for Sept. 20, 2017

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they're popular and deserve mention. Here are today's picks.

macOS Apps/Updates

Typinator 7.3 requires macOS 10.6 or higher. It can be purchased on the Ergonis Software website. The upgrade to Typinator 7.3 is free for Typinator 7 license owners and for anyone who purchased a license for Typinator 6 on or after Jan. 1, 2016. Upgrade...

Apple Daily Report for Sept. 19, 2017

My compadre, Steve Sande, is in the middle of a podcast, so can’t do the usual AWT News Update. In its place, I’ll offer a text-only (no podcast) summary of breaking stories with a tip o’ my hat to my former website, Apple Daily Report.

Apple tends to do well when it raises prices, says Morgan Stanley's Katy Huberty, who has raised her price target on the company's stock to $194 to reflect several price increases (such as the iPhone X).

Apple's A11 Bionic system on chip (SoC) makes the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X by far the highest-performing smartphones available today, according to Geekbench results.

Analyst: if it’s a hit, expect to see Face ID...

In a note to clients — as noted by AppleInsider — KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that, if Face ID on the iPhone X is a hit, we’ll see it replacing Touch ID on future iPhones and iPads. If it’s not a big hit, expect to see iOS devices sporting Face ID and Touch ID. He also expects the TrueDepth camera of the iPhone X in all future iOS gadgets.

"In our view, TrueDepth camera could create many innovative applications, Face ID being the most important of them," Kuo writes. "If Face ID is well received by consumers after the launch of iPhone X, we believe it is more likely that 2018 all-new models will adopt TrueDepth camera and support Face ID.”

Apple says FaceID is “even more convenient than Touch ID.” With Face ID, the iPhone X unlocks only when you’re looking at it. It’s designed to resist spoofing by photos or masks....

Today, Apple released the final version of iOS 11, its latest mobile operating system. If you have an iPhone or iPad that was released within the last few years, you should be able to download the new update if you navigate to the Settings panel and check for a software update under the General tab. The Verge reports: OS 11, first unveiled in detail back at Apple's WWDC in June, is the same incremental annual refresh we've come to expect from the company, but it hides some impressive complexity under the surface. Not only does it add some neat features to iOS for the first time, like ARKit capabilities for augmented reality and a new Files app, but it also comes with much-needed improvements to Siri; screenshot capture and editing; and the Control Center, which is now more fully featured and customizable. For iPads, iOS 11 is more of an overhaul. The software now better supports multitasking so you can more easily bring two apps into split-screen mode, or even add a third now. The...

As home video viewing patterns continue to evolve, one common prediction is that packaged media is on its last legs. Streaming services have been gaining market share at a steady pace. Verizon offers a chance to win an iPhone 8 before it...

The iPhone 8 is set to hit shelves Friday, Sept. 22, and Verizon consumers in Los Angeles will have a chance to win one. Beginning today, participants can take part in a scavenger hunt on Snapchat, powered by real-time data.

For four days leading up to the launch of the new iPhone, the wireless carrier will hide "virtual 8s" per day in L.A. and seven other cities that can only be seen using an exclusive Snapchat lens. Known as “Find the 8,” participants in the competition will only find the eight available phones when they’re in the right place at the right time.

People who want to “Find the 8” can do so via promotional banners through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat, or by visiting verizon.com/findthe8. Upon entering the microsite, players will receive a series of location-based clues. Each hint will guide people to a specific spot, eventually leading to the final location where participants can...

iOS 11 is here! Install it now to take advantage of...

iOS 11 just showed up! Hopefully you've prepared yourself for the upgrade and you're now watching your iPhone and/or iPad transform itself into a new, more powerful tool. If you're still on the fence about upgrading, here's an overview of some of the new or improved features of iOS 11.

The Dock

Available on the iPad (and iPhone X?), the Dock should be familiar to anyone who has ever used a Mac. It disappears when you’re in an app, but a swipe from the bottom of the screen brings it right up for quick switching or opening of apps. Apps recently opened on that iPad or on your Mac show up in the right side of the Dock. The latter makes handoff of apps from Mac to iOS easy as pie.

New App Switcher and Control Center

That gesture to bring up the Dock? Continue it up to the middle of the display and the new App Switcher and Control Center appear. The Control Center can be configured to add the controls that are most important...

Apple File System in macOS High Sierra Won't...

An anonymous reader shares a report: MacOS High Sierra will come out of beta and roll out to the public next week. If you have previously installed the beta version, you may need to take extra steps before installing the release so your Fusion Drive-toting machine doesn't experience any negative consequences. Apple announced that the new Apple File system (APFS) won't immediately support Fusion Drives and will only support systems with all-flash built-in storage in the initial release of High Sierra. Those who tested out the beta versions of macOS High Sierra had their Fusion Drives converted to the new APFS. However, support was removed from the most recent beta versions, and it isn't coming back with the public release of High Sierra. Apple provided a set of instructions to help those users convert their Fusion Drives back from APFS to the standard HFS+ format before installing the High Sierra update. The instructions include backing up data using Time Machine, creating a...

Developer Marco Arment Shares Thoughts On iPhone X...

Developer Marco Arment writes about the infamous notch on the iPhone X, which Apple has told developers to embrace rather than ignore: This is the new shape of the iPhone. As long as the notch is clearly present and of approximately these proportions, it's unique, simple, and recognizable. It's probably not going to significantly change for a long time, and Apple needs to make sure that the entire world recognizes it as well as we could recognize previous iPhones. That's why Apple has made no effort to hide the notch in software, and why app developers are being told to embrace it in our designs. That's why the HomePod software leak depicted the iPhone X like this: it's the new basic, recognizable form of the iPhone. Apple just completely changed the fundamental shape of the most important, most successful, and most recognizable tech product that the world has ever seen.
